00:03:07
Speaker
yeah How are you doing tonight, Russ? I'm doing fine, Don. Thank you. Oh, good deal. Good deal. Did you get snow down there? No. No, we got cold. It got really cold, but we didn't get any snow.
00:03:20
Speaker
We had a really good day um ah going in on Saturday. We had a really nice day out, and we had a cookout here at the house, and everything was all fine and and all night.
00:03:31
Speaker
cut Woke up Sunday morning into a blizzard. Really? Really? we had We must have had probably at least a good inch or so of snow. A couple inches of snow on the ground. It's blowing hard.
00:03:43
Speaker
It's been cold the last couple days. it's And it's supposed to get back up in the 50s again probably later on in the weekend. of the weekend Oh, okay. november Illinois November weather. You never can count. yeah Yeah, right, right.
College Football Playoff Rankings Discussion
00:03:57
Speaker
that. Well, yeah. After we talked last week with the with the CFP rankings, they just came out this week, and we'll get to those a little bit later. I kind of want to go over the last couple weeks. This kind of, I think, has shaped up this this CFP rankings.
00:04:15
Speaker
Some games from the week 10, which is two weeks ago, that um I think had a hand in it, and a couple of games that really, while they weren't upsets, I'm... i'm it kind of showed some vulnerability to a couple of teams.
00:04:30
Speaker
Uh, first one is, uh, uh, Texas taking down Vandy, uh, 34 to 31, uh, Texas was number 20. Vandy was number nine at the time.
00:04:42
Speaker
Um, and that gave Vandy two losses and kept Texas, ah keep Texas alive on their playoff hopes. Right.
00:04:53
Speaker
Um, I mean, was ah you said a couple a couple weeks ago that you know maybe Texas, is by after they beat Oklahoma, you know maybe they're finally on there. They finally got it all put together. and um Vandy gave them a good game, but just fell a little on the short side.
00:05:12
Speaker
Yeah, Vandy's really something about that. they They looked like they were done and they were out. It looked like Texas had that thing put away, and then Vandy made it. stirring comeback and almost pulled that thing out.
00:05:26
Speaker
yeah That just seems to be Bandy's M.O. this year. Their quarterback. ah And you'll have to remind me who his name again, and even though I'm in the SEC.
00:05:41
Speaker
ah Well, yeah, it's hard to figure out some of these guys sometimes. Yeah, he's Pavea. Yeah, Pavea. Yeah, Pavea. but yeah pavea yeah pavea David, he's transferred from New Mexico.
00:05:54
Speaker
There was there last year, Diego Pavia. Yeah. Yeah. And ah his stats don't, you know, I mean, they're not going to blow you away, but man, he has the ability to bring a team back. And that's what
Key Game Analyses and Playoff Implications
00:06:08
Speaker
he did almost do against Texas. And we'll talk about what he did last week later on.
00:06:13
Speaker
Don, but yeah, yeah. They, he brought them almost brought them back. So I think, uh, It seems like to me that Archmandy might be putting it together finally or something because they're they're scoring points, but they just really struggled.
00:06:30
Speaker
And that was against a ah ah good bandy defense, a decent bandy defense that they did that. So, yeah, i think I think they're beginning to put it together. I'm not sure.
00:06:45
Speaker
We'll see how they did how they go from here, but yeah. Well, I think Pavea actually in that game did well for I mean, ah he actually out through Manning. He had 365 yards and three TDs to Manning's 328 and three TDs. so yeah Yeah. but that but I mean, I didn't get to see a lot of that game, but what I did see, it was a fun game to watch. I'll tell you that. i mean there was, yeah. A lot of good aerial aerial display there, if you will.
00:07:09
Speaker
West Virginia, I think they kind of they took care of Houston ah forty five to thirty five which I wasn't um wasn't real big on Houston, but it's at 7-1 at that time, they had their opportunity to, you know, they could win a couple more games, nose their way in.
00:07:28
Speaker
um you know, I think that game knocked them out. Yeah. Pretty much i mean where, you know, where they're sitting in the ACC or not the ACC.
00:07:39
Speaker
It's a big 12, big 12. Yeah. Both those teams are big 12. yeah Georgia tech getting their first loss to NC state. to Yeah.
00:07:50
Speaker
That, that shocked me. I saw that score. I thought I was reading it wrong. I'm sure it shocked the Georgia Tech fans, too, because I think they thought they could roll over NC State, and the NC State just pulled pulled one out, pulled a surprise out. So I was, so yeah, I was a little surprised, but, you know, I'm not sure Georgia Tech is โ is a great team. I think they're probably a good team in the ACC, but they're not, you know, I didn't think they'd go through the season undefeated. I figured someone would take them out sooner or later, you know.
00:08:24
Speaker
I just think that's the way it is in the ACC this year. There's no great teams in that in that league. or just ah There's some good teams is basically what it is. yeah A bunch of good teams getting together and having having fun is what it is. Yeah. yeah um Then, Game, you and I had talked about that we thought you know it was going to be a team or a game of somebody was going to get their was because was going to get their third loss and ended up being Tennessee. They got beat by Oklahoma 33-27.
00:08:57
Speaker
Keeps Oklahoma, i kept Oklahoma in the in the conversation. um you know And I don't know. Tennessee just, they seem like they they they can they can get there and they can get ah things going.
00:09:12
Speaker
But when it comes to comes down to crunch time, they just can't put a game away. Yeah, that's big game that is, I should say. Yeah, that's right. And Oklahoma's kind of hanging on by their skin.
00:09:24
Speaker
you know, they've got two losses and they, you know, they can't afford to lose another game. But that was that was a must game for both those teams. And Oklahoma came out on top. So they're still hanging in there. And Tennessee is out now.
00:09:38
Speaker
Last year they were in it. they They got in the college football playoff, and but they're out now. Just shows the SEC schedule just as a โ it's a bear to get through.
00:09:50
Speaker
You know, it's just a bear for anyone to get through. so Exactly, exactly. And we have to we have to make a mention here that Bill Belichick got his first ACC win two weeks ago, beating Syracuse twenty seven to ten So congratulations and he to to Bill getting that monkey off his back.
00:10:08
Speaker
brought You know, um one ah couple other games that were of some note, ah Utah beat Cincinnati, which gave Cincinnati two losses.
00:10:19
Speaker
But I think more importantly, it ah kind of muddied the waters a little bit. I think it actually not. And once we get to the to the power, the playoff rankings, ah I think it.
00:10:34
Speaker
You know, it kind of gives the ACC a couple more teams to play with, if you will. ron big twelve i mean, the Big 12, a couple more teams to play with, if you will. Yeah. So now ah ah last week was where really we saw things that were that affected um what what showed up on on our doorstep and in terms of rankings on sunday uh texas tech taking down byu giving byu their first loss um but as we'll see it didn't really hurt byu that much um and you know i don't know texas tech at nine and one um
00:11:17
Speaker
You know, that you got to be considering those guys as as kind of some kind of a threat when you get to these playoffs if they make it in, ah you know, because who knows what's going to happen between now and then.
00:11:29
Speaker
you know, if they if they make it in you know, that's a team that I think is is, I don't know. Do you think people are underrating
Impact of Conference Realignment
00:11:37
Speaker
them a bit? I mean, they were going they were number eight going into last week on the AP scale.
00:11:42
Speaker
Mm-hmm. Yeah, I don't know that people have really been paying that much attention to Texas Tech. I think they're beginning to, obviously. ah You know, the Big 12, just, ah you know, who who who in that conference were you thinking was going to be the โ The team to take it out last year was Arizona State, you know, won it.
00:12:03
Speaker
But this year it looks like it's Texas Tech. They just, you know, the Big 12 is such a reorganized conference. I don't know what to think of it and I don't know who the who with Oklahoma and Texas gone from it.
00:12:17
Speaker
who you know who who's the dominant program over there? Is it BYU? Is it Utah? Is it Texas Tech? I mean, you know who who has the who has the dominance? But it looks like Texas Tech is putting its resume together, and they could very well ah you know they could very well be the one in there that should be the conference champion and be the one get the bid.
00:12:38
Speaker
you know And I don't know, maybe BYU, they get a bid too. i you know it' just It's a hard league for me to kind of figure out. nice who who's the best team in there, who are the teams in there that going to get Yeah, I mean, the Big 12s, I mean, even back in the day, I mean, when you and I were a lot younger and had more hair and it was different color, you know, I think back in the day when, you know, you had the Big
00:13:08
Speaker
um you know, and you had Nebraska and Oklahoma and and and Texas. And, ah you know, it's just, like you said, it just kind of keeps morphing over the years to to where you just don't know what's what's it what it's going to be. Because, ah you know, they added four teams that in the Pac-12 this year, or last year, excuse me.
00:13:35
Speaker
Um, so I don't know. I mean, it's going to be really interesting to see how, especially now with teams that are going to be moving from, um, the, uh, mountain West, that's going to be moving over to, uh, the pack 12,
00:13:52
Speaker
um You know, and how that's going to affect. I mean, does the does a Big 12 go after a couple of the stragglers from the Mountain West or, you know, what do they do? I mean, I think i don't think we've seen the end of conference realignment by any stretch of the imagination, at least not yet.
00:14:10
Speaker
So, uh, another game game that was interesting. It didn't, it, it panned or it came out the result, I guess. So the winner came out as who it probably should have been, but it got kind of dicey there at the end. And that was Indiana Penn state.
00:14:25
Speaker
Um, Penn State walked in with nothing to lose and everything to gain. And Indiana went up went up big. And then basically had to hold on for their dear life in the fourth quarter to to get that to get that one to come out.
College Football Playoff Ranking System Explained
00:14:42
Speaker
They beat Penn State 24-27.
00:14:45
Speaker
so Oh, yeah. A gutsy win for Indiana, which is once something they're going to probably need and when they get into the CFP or even the Big Ten ah big ten championship game.
00:14:57
Speaker
But you you know with a team ah that was in the disarray as Penn State was, you know does that mean if there's a crack in that armor? Mm-hmm.
00:15:08
Speaker
Well, I think, you know, it showed that at least the Indiana knew how to survive a ah tough game. They've just been seeing like they've been blowing everyone out and they hadn't really been challenged and they finally got challenged and they responded well to it I think that shows.
00:15:23
Speaker
showsa ah shows up on their coaching and on their players very well. So you didn't know what Penn State was going to do. it Was this the first game after James Franklin? Were they bye week? Second game, I think. I think it was the second one after Franklin. The second one. so ah So it looked like maybe the coach had rallied the troops together. so But, you know, give them credit for making a play at Indiana and give Indiana credit for โ but for winning a close game where they were looked like they might be, they were challenged quite a bit. So I think it's a good game for Indiana, good for Indiana to show what they can do in a close game.
00:16:00
Speaker
Yeah. Yeah. Another game ah coming out of the big 10 that was closer than probably it should have been. ah and this one went to
00:16:13
Speaker
over. No, it didn't go to overtime. um Was Oregon, Iowa. um Oregon had to withstand another one where they had to withstand a challenge that beat it 18 to 16. You know, I, I, I, again, that's just a testament right there to Oregon's D or Iowa's defense. I mean, ah year after year after year, you are just not going to score. I don't care who you are.
00:16:42
Speaker
You're not going to score on that team. And if they can keep you low enough, you just might lose. your just might lose and I mean, it puts Iowa at six and three which puts them on the outside looking in.
00:16:54
Speaker
Keeps Oregon at eight one But, you know, again, is this like with Indiana? I mean, is this showing that Oregon's got a chink in their armor? Are people going to looking at this game like they're going be looking at the Penn State-Indiana games? Okay, what did they do to keep this game close? What did they do to keep these guys down?
00:17:12
Speaker
Yeah. You know? Yeah, I was, you know, has been questionable on the offensive end, but they've always been really consistent on defense. And Oregon ran up on them and, you know, struggled against them. I'm not sure. I guess Oregon, what are they, one loss, two losses, Don? One loss.
00:17:32
Speaker
Oregon's got one. One loss. Yeah, you know it you know, it looks like they could probably get into the to the playoffs. Yeah. I'm just not sure how far they'll go. I'm just not sure i'm that impressed with what they've done. This is not like Ohio State.
00:17:45
Speaker
Right. It just looks solid up and down. Well, and this is not the Oregon team of last year that was just running over anybody and everybody. Yeah, right, right. So, ah you know, they go to they go to Iowa and they, you know, they get they they almost they almost they don't pull it they almost still pull it out and, you know,
00:18:03
Speaker
The guy gave a lot of respect what they do at Iowa on defense, I'll tell you why. Well, yeah, and it was, i mean, and they won the game on a field goal with three seconds left. I mean, this was, it it wasn't like they they held off a challenge. I mean, they had actually come from behind to win that game.
00:18:18
Speaker
ah down They were down 16-15, had to come from behind to win that game. so um Vanderbilt um took its frustrations out on Auburn, although Auburn looks like gave them a game. They had to go to overtime to get it.
00:18:34
Speaker
Vanderbilt pulls away with the win, Does that โ That was a โ yeah, that was a โ yeah that was a that was a That was a a good win, another good win, close win for Vanderbilt, and another with game that shows Pavea what you he can do when the chips are down. Yeah, another 377 and three TDs. He had 18 rushing attempts for 112 yards and another touchdown.
00:19:00
Speaker
I mean, you know, that this this kid could be โ I don't know. I mean, I don't know. I haven't seen the Heisman list yet, but if if he's not getting at least some sideways sideways glances, I don't know who should.
00:19:12
Speaker
Yeah, i think he is I think he certainly is getting some glances. And, you know, it's ah he looks like a, you know, he the he he looks like the type of guy.
00:19:24
Speaker
Like I said, I think there are other ah players who have more impressive stats. And although he has some good stats, and you know, he's just someone who knows how to pull out ah win games and and i think that's getting a lot of attention you know some people don't like him because he's kind of cocky i don't know if you ever seen him interviewed he doesn't he's not a bit shy about uh telling you what what what what he's doing but uh you know yeah they've uh they've done a yeah yeah he's he probably is getting a lot of looks at the heisman trophies
00:19:58
Speaker
I mean, you stop and think it. mean, the what, 350 week last week? yeah that's almost that's over over 750 yards almost in two games with six six touchdowns. So, you know, it's like that'll get somebody to stand up and take a look at you.
00:20:19
Speaker
um A team that I think that people were giving a shot as being the fourth team in from Big Ten, they took it on the chin. Wisconsin pulls the upset.
00:20:31
Speaker
At Camp Randall against Washington, 13-10. yeah um i saw the end of that game, and Washington just could not move the ball in the second half at all.
00:20:46
Speaker
yeah ah Wisconsin had it clamped down from from from the minute go and in the second in the second half. So that kind of took them out.
00:20:57
Speaker
um Louisville kind of... I think they, you know, they got beat by California. um That knocks them took them down to seven and two.
00:21:09
Speaker
know, I think it kind of keeps them out of the, out of the, on the outside looking in. ah The one that really, I didn't, it didn't, I mean, it shocks me to an extent ah was Wake Forest taking down Virginia 16 to nine. I mean, Virginia never got a touchdown in a game. Three field goals is all they managed.
00:21:28
Speaker
Yeah, that once again, that just shows I'm not real sure there's a โ And that was at home. Yeah, Virginia was is ah much of is a contender to get in the playoff. I know a lot people were looking at them. I know they had the record. But, i you know, I still think it's the best team there in that conference is Miami.
00:21:50
Speaker
And that they should be the team to get in But I know, you know, they they've got two losses on them, too, don't they, Don? I mean, they're counting. um Miami, I have to look it up, but I think you could be correct on that.
00:22:07
Speaker
um Oh, well, we'll get to it a minute, but they didn't make playoff 25. Oh, didn't? Okay.
00:22:15
Speaker
oh they did no lot A lot of other ACC teams did, but yeah Miami is, yeah they are seven and two.
00:22:27
Speaker
Yeah. At this point. Yeah. Yeah. They're kind of hanging on by the teeth, but I'm not sure who the, who the the team is going to get in. It's not obvious which team or which. No, it really isn't with the ACC at this point.
00:22:40
Speaker
um But let's see. I'm go back here where I was at. Okay. ah And let's see. Yeah. After that, let's see. We had, uh,
00:22:54
Speaker
a and, uh, you know, after that really, it was kind of, it was kind of, uh, we had the one, ah USC. I'm trying to think who they are, who they played. explained them here in a second. and they managed to keep their, ah hopes and dreams alive.
00:23:16
Speaker
um Nebraska got knocked down. we are, oh, that's who it was. ah Nebraska get knocked down the week before by us. s The USA had the week off last week. So they're kind of still alive.
00:23:28
Speaker
Um, So that actually brings us then into the the top 25 or the playoff rankings. Now, and ah well for those that don't know, the the playoff rankings are different than the top 25. So you look at the top 25, that's not who's who right now the playoffs are looking at.
00:23:47
Speaker
So the playoff rankings as it sits, and again, they take the top 12 teams, but uh, all power for, or, uh, the top power for ranked conference champions get a automatic bid into the top 12 and the highest ranking group of five, which we're going to get to that in a second.
00:24:15
Speaker
Okay. So y'all better just be prepared for that one. Um, but tell you what, let's do this first. Let's let me, let me get, let me get our, our sponsor out of the way here first, and then we'll move on.
00:24:27
Speaker
um You know, ah hydration is very important in in maintaining your good health and the human body consists of 50 to 70 percent water. And on the average, dehydration causes about three to five percent loss of total body water.
00:24:41
Speaker
ah And if you're increased activity or if it's hot out you're going to lose more water. Now, if your dehydration gets to eight or nine percent, you it's when you really feel it. That's when you feel fatigued. You get thirsty. You get tired. You get headaches when your body raw loss body water loss reaches about 15 percent.
00:24:59
Speaker
It can put you in the hospital. That's never a fun thing to do. and So proper hydration, though, it requires more than just drinking water. Because along with the water, you're losing key electrolytes like sodium and glucose.
00:25:12
Speaker
So many individuals only consume half recommended amount of water they should be drinking each day. So one solution is to multiply that hydration. And a product that can do that is liquid IV.
00:25:23
Speaker
It's one of the most popular sports drinks in America and delivers hydration twice as fast as water and contains three times the electrolytes of the traditional sports drinks you normally use. It utilizes cellular transport technology to enhance rapid absorption of water into the body.
00:25:40
Speaker
It provides essential B vita b vitamins like B3, B5, B6, B12, contains vitamin C, non-GMO, soy-free, dairy-free, gluten-free,
00:25:51
Speaker
And it offers a variety of different formulas, not only the electrolyte replacement, but you have an energy hydration, an immune-boosting formula, a dietary health that has a kombucha blend, and a better sleep-through hydration.
00:26:05
Speaker
It also comes in light, refreshing flavors such as golden cherry, Azu pineapple, strawberry lemonade, lemon lime, green grape, white peach, pina colada, and No alcohol in a pina colada, folks. You've got to put that in yourself.
00:26:19
Speaker
ah There's a sugar-free version that's available that uses an amino acid blend instead of an artificial sweetener. There's also a hydration formant designed for children, available in flavors that they like. Concord grape, crisp apple, tropical punch, banana, even cotton candy.
00:26:35
Speaker
Conveniently packaged in individual sticks or pouches, Liquid IV can be used and taken and anywhere, including the beach, the gym, the office, the school, even on an airplane. The humidity in an airplane, and I didn't know this until I did some research, is 5% to 12% lower than the Sahara Desert because of the in-cab and air conditioning and all that.
00:26:57
Speaker
Well, that leads to dehydration since there's not a ah lot of humidity. Dehydration is in long flights it is what causes jet lag. So coffee and tea, they don't really help.
00:27:09
Speaker
So get yourself bottle of water, drop in a stick of liquid IV, and you can fight the dehydration, fight the jet lag. Liquid IV also cares about the world we live in, so they source sustainable materials from family farms and use 100% recycled materials in all their packaging.
00:27:27
Speaker
They provided grants to help expand access to clean abundant water in other countries. They help out in times of disasters and the famines and and the floods and earthquakes and you name it. They're they're they're shipping out doses of of liquid IV to help help out.

Speaker
Okay. Now the business is done. We can continue. Excuse me. A little frog in my throat tonight. Sorry about that. ah We're talking about, this is the NCAA report with Don and Russ, and we are talking um the NCAA football situation as it sits. We've kind of gone over the scores of the last couple of weeks.
00:28:42
Speaker
So now we're going to talk about the ah college football playoff rankings and the Now, they only rank 25 teams. It's not like the AP or the coaches poll that ranks the top 25 and you got five or six extra teams that they put at the bottom of the ranking. No.
00:28:58
Speaker
They do 25 teams and that's it. So, a little history or lesson. The playoff is the top 12 teams, the top four conference, or the top four teams, excuse me, changed from last year.
00:29:14
Speaker
Last year was the top four conference champions who got Automatic bids. This year is the top four teams, regardless of conference, that get the automatic bid. So they've that part of it.
00:29:26
Speaker
So the top four teams will get automatic bids. The rest, the other eight play each other. And then, um, then they'll play different bowl games. And I'll, we'll get to that probably next time on what bowl games are be taken care of by these playoffs.
00:29:41
Speaker
Um, so, The way it looks right now, the top four teams are Ohio State, Indiana, Texas A&M, and Alabama. Now, three of those are unbeaten. Ohio State, Indiana, Texas A&M, and Alabama is at 8-1.
00:29:57
Speaker
So those four teams get your bye. and Well, if the playoffs were to start today. Those four teams would get your buy. The next four teams down are Georgia at 8-1. They're number five. Number six is Ole Miss at 9-1.
00:30:11
Speaker
Number seven is BYU at 8-1. And number eight is Texas Tech at 9-1. And this is what I said earlier, Russ, one of before the show started. I said, I don't know what this committee's thinking.
00:30:23
Speaker
BYU just lost to Texas A&M. and I think this is done before those games. It may have been done before the games, but they lost. ah and And Texas A&M was kind of ranked fairly down.
00:30:40
Speaker
um i think i think what the think what it is is they they didn't really want to โ um penalize BYU, but i don't know why you would still rank them below. But anyway, but that's a number S. That's your next four.
00:30:55
Speaker
Then the final four ah teams in the top 12 are Oregon at 8-1, Notre Dame at seven and two Texas at seven and two and Oklahoma at seven and two Now, the interesting thing about all this is you do a conference breakdown and the big 10 has three teams.
00:31:15
Speaker
The sec has, uh, six teams. The big 12 has two teams. And then you have Notre Dame is the lone independent.
00:31:28
Speaker
Uh, there are no teams from the ACC in the top 12, no teams from the group of five in the top 12. Now, now If you say, now it and and it and the rules and the way they are stated, you have to be ranked.
00:31:48
Speaker
So ah the top ACC team would eventually move, if they were to stop the day, the top ACC team would be Virginia at eight and two And they would, by default, be the number 12 team, and Oklahoma would be kicked out of the playoffs. Right.
00:32:07
Speaker
Right, right. Now, since there is no group but since there's no group of five-team ranked, and you have to be a ranked group of five-team, this particular scenario leads me to believe that there would be no group of five in the playoffs this year.
00:32:26
Speaker
Yeah, it looks like... if this if it was based on um this poll today. You we still got some teams that could work their way up. Yeah, yeah. And I was looking at the standings. It's the funny you should mention, i was looking at the standings.
00:32:40
Speaker
Well, actually, the next i'll do the next four teams are Utah, Virginia, Louisville, and Vandy. All those teams have two losses. Then you look at who's behind that, and you've got Georgia Tech, ah Miami,
00:32:59
Speaker
you and I am wrong. I thought Miami was not, but they are on here. Excuse me. You have Georgia Tech, Miami, and USC as your next or yeah usc and iowa as your next four.
00:33:15
Speaker
um Iowa is in there at six and three, and I'm not sure. I mean, okay, I get it, but I think there's a couple of teams may be little bit more deserving than Iowa to be in the top 20.
00:33:27
Speaker
um so you know So there's, again, and another group of just in those eight teams, you've got four those are ACC. Two of them are Big Ten. One's Big 12, and one's SEC.
Current Standings and Speculations in NCAA
00:33:42
Speaker
Then the last five teams in right are on the roster are Michigan at 7-2 out of the Big Ten, Missouri 6-3 out of the SEC, Washington 6-3 out of the Big Ten, Pittsburgh 7-2 out of the ACC, and Tennessee six and three out of the SEC.
00:33:59
Speaker
Now, a lot of things can change, like you said, between now and then. We do have another couple weeks of football to play. And I was looking up, and in group of five teams, the only really two group of five teams, I think,
00:34:11
Speaker
right now that are being ignored in this ah scenario, San Diego state at seven and two and James Madison at eight and one. Now, yeah I know what people are going to tell me, James Madison, Don, are you, have you lost your ever loving flipping mind?
00:34:29
Speaker
Well, maybe, i mean you know, but I could have said Kennesaw state at seven and two, but I don't think that would have flown anywhere. uh you and and then you have uconn another independent at seven and three so there's teams that could probably make a a game of it if you will um don where's memphis in your do you see memphis because memphis has been uh they've been close to that close they've been in that top 25 all year eight they're not the
00:35:01
Speaker
a we're not in They're not in this. They are. they Yeah, they're in the American. But they right now they're at eight and two. North Texas is at eight and one. They're also out of the American.
00:35:15
Speaker
And then you've got South Florida, Tulane. Both of those guys are 7-2. Navy's at seven and two So I think those five teams, you know it depending on what their schedules are like, could make a could make a game of it, if you will.
00:35:32
Speaker
Let me just see with the a what the ah AAC schedule looks like. American Conference. So for next week, the American Conference, South Florida, which is in the AP Top 25 at 24, they play Navy.
00:35:47
Speaker
North Texas has UAB. Memphis has East Carolina. So the only one that's going to get a knockout punch probably in that group is going to be either South Florida or Navy because I don't envision North Texas losing to UAB or Memphis losing to East Carolina.
00:36:06
Speaker
um you know But then again, we didn't think North Carolina State would win. yeah would have won the game they won. So, you know, um so I think that those, two so Memphis, I mean, Memphis still has a chance. South Florida still has a chance. North Texas still has a chance. I had the, a out of the American.
00:36:26
Speaker
um But right now, I think um if we're, if we're going to look at a a conference, you know, I'm thinking big, the mountain West is where it's probably going to come from.
00:36:40
Speaker
um Why, I don't know. It's just the way I think. um And now San Diego State, they've got they've got their test. If they can get past this week, they play Boise State.
00:36:52
Speaker
If they can get past this week, I think they have a real shot at coming out of this with only one win and a or ah two losses, excuse me. And I don't think the committee can, can really ignore them.
00:37:06
Speaker
Uh, because all they've got left is San Jose state and New Mexico. Uh, after, after Boise state. So I don't see now, of course they did just lose to Hawaii 38 to six.
00:37:18
Speaker
So, you know, go figure that one. Um, I mean, when you start talking to group of five, it becomes a real quagmire as to who and where and why. And the reason I mentioned James Madison, and I will get to them. Here they are out of the Sun Belt.
00:37:36
Speaker
um Get to them here in just a quick quick half second here. The reason I is because, I mean, you don't really see many teams out of the Sun Belt even out of the Sunbelt, I should say, with that kind of a record.
00:37:53
Speaker
Anyway, they're eight and one um And let's see. They've got Appalachian State this this week. And, I mean, and it's not like, I mean, granted, Sunbelt, you're not playing a lot of great big teams.
00:38:10
Speaker
you know but and But they theirre one one of their two losses is to Louisville, or their only loss is to Louisville, so it's not a terrible loss. um But, yeah, they're not getting the love because, you know like I said, they're playing ah texas Texas State, whoever that is. and Sure. Sure.
00:38:31
Speaker
Yeah. i don't It gives me the the abbreviation, and I have no idea who that means. Texas State somebody. ah you know That's kind of their theyre big win, so to speak, if you will.
00:38:45
Speaker
ah Now, they do have Washington State coming up, so that could be a game where it might give them some traction. um But I don't know. I mean, we're we're looking at...
00:38:59
Speaker
we're kind of an uncharted territory with this. Cause like I said, we, you don't, you've never really seen non group of not having a group of five representative in that top 25. Yeah. I think it's, it's very possible. Someone could play their way in there.
00:39:14
Speaker
I think Memphis could, I think James Madison could. And you know, the Sunbelt is James Madison's in the Sunbelt conference. That's a, it's a decent football power of power.
00:39:29
Speaker
group of five conference. Right. And they're going to have, and they will play a, I think they play a championship game because that's divided to East and West. yeah thanks or Yeah. I Yeah. They have two divisions. Yeah. And they'll have another chance of to add to their record.
00:39:44
Speaker
They could play them somewhat well and into that or so so can, I think so could Memphis. I believe Memphis is ah ah is a good football team. I don't know they're going to win their conference in North Texas State. It's another one.
00:39:58
Speaker
So there's still a couple of weeks for these teams to play themselves into it still. yeah Yeah. And teams to play themselves out of the top 25. twenty five Oh, no doubt. I mean, yeah. I mean, you look at you just look at the top 25 and I'll get back to those rankings just here in just second.
00:40:13
Speaker
ah You look at the top 25 in the playoff rankings, and, you know, in in the well'll just look at the top 12, you've got Utah is sitting at, or excuse me, BYU is sitting at 8-1, but you've Oklahoma at Texas at Notre Dame at seven and two yeah Any one of those three ah lose, and because you already have to bring up an acc or a yeah An ACC team in, so already you're you're losing BYU out of the playoff rankings. They're automatically gone.
00:40:54
Speaker
out of the the playoff rankings they're automatically gone um you know it to to favor an acc ACC team like Virginia or Georgia Tech, whoever, Miami, whichever one makes it in. Because Miami's sitting there at 7-2.
00:41:11
Speaker
um Georgia, if they lose another game, you know they're gone. Vanderbilt, they're sitting at number 14. They're 8-2. you know Likely they could play their win, but if they get another loss, they could be gone.
00:41:25
Speaker
um Yeah. You know, a lot of a lot of things can can play this.
00:41:33
Speaker
Wait a minute. something Well, like I said, Don, this first that came out, it was done before last week's games. Missouri's lost, and so they're 6-3, and they've already been kicked out of the AP Top 25. They'll move out of this, too. so And so someone's going to have a chance to move in. Oh, hey, what we do it we just had a new update on the playoff rankings.
00:41:55
Speaker
Uh-huh. Just now got updated. i I was reading last week's, I guess. Right. So let me see whatever's changed here. It's still the top four, still the same.
00:42:08
Speaker
Then it's still, yeah, I just saw this just come across. It just updated on me. Yeah, still texas texas and Texas Tech is now
00:42:22
Speaker
Ole Miss is seven. oregon is still Oregon is down to as up to eight. Notre Dame is up to nine.
00:42:35
Speaker
Texas is 10. Oklahoma is 11. BYU is now number 12. They're down five spots. um And Cincinnati is now in at number 25.
00:42:50
Speaker
Okay. Okay. So Cincinnati is, or or no, it are they?
00:42:58
Speaker
They're out the Big 12. They're out of the Big 12. So we still don't have a group of five team represented. Let's see. Georgia Tech is down to, well, they're about the same spot. They're a little bit lower. They're down, or they're up one to 16. Yeah.
00:43:17
Speaker
um so So it's changed a little bit. lot of A lot of them are still the same
Predictions for Upcoming Games and Rankings
00:43:25
Speaker
same players. They're just in a different order now. um But actually, it's huge for Texas Tech.
00:43:32
Speaker
Or not, excuse me, for Texas Tech for Oregon. Because the top, or the five through eight, ah have to play, obviously, ah nine through 12.
00:43:44
Speaker
But they get the home game. in that first round. So that's huge for Oregon to move up. They don't have to play on the road. So your home games are going to be Georgia, Texas, Ole Miss, and Oregon.
00:43:57
Speaker
right If it were to end today, Georgia would play BYU at home. Texas Tech would play Oklahoma at home. Ole Miss would play Texas at home.
00:44:08
Speaker
And Oregon would get Notre Dame at home.
00:44:13
Speaker
And that would, that could greatly affect a lot of things. Oh, yeah. Yeah, exactly. ah It's hard to imagine that Tennessee moved up. i They had three losses, but I guess they're still kind of โ They only moved up two. They were number 25 or number 23. Yeah.
00:44:34
Speaker
So they didn't move up much. um Really, nobody moved up a lot. of The biggest move looks like โ Miami coming up three spots from 18 to 15.
00:44:47
Speaker
So like you said, that gives them their shot to play their way in. Vanderbilt's now at 14, so they've got a way to play their ah a chance to play their way in. yeah know b yu down at number twelve Like said, there are automatically the odd man out.
00:45:06
Speaker
um Oklahoma, Texas, Notre Dame, all with two losses. You know, they could find themselves. and say who's Oregon plays Minnesota at Minnesota.
00:45:18
Speaker
Notre Dame plays at Pittsburgh. And Texas plays at Georgia this week. Oh, excuse me. Oregon doesn't matter. Excuse me. ah Oklahoma plays at Alabama. So right away, you could lose two more teams right out of that top 12. Oh, absolutely, yeah.
00:45:37
Speaker
Yeah, because you've got, like, with with Oklahoma facing Alabama, you've got Georgia facing Texas. Both of those are โ that's at Georgia and at Alabama. um Let's see.
00:45:49
Speaker
Vanderbilt has a big chance to move up. They play at home versus Kentucky. um
00:45:59
Speaker
USC's got a task to stay in. They've got to go to Iowa and play.
00:46:05
Speaker
How about being the top four? Let's see. Top four. Ohio State is at home against UCLA. Indiana is at home against Wisconsin. Texas A&M is at home against South Carolina.
00:46:18
Speaker
Of course, we know Alabama is at home against Oklahoma. So I doubt any of those four lose, although South Carolina has been known to shock some people.
00:46:30
Speaker
And sure oklaho i mean you know Oklahoma, that they they're they're fighting for their lives. So you know who knows? So is Texas.
00:46:41
Speaker
but we We could even see a change in the top four as far as that goes. And Wisconsin, I mean, know how hyped up they're going to be after beating beating Washington and then getting a chance to to take on โ it's going to be out at Indiana, but, you know, hey, you know i could be their Super Bowl game as far as that goes, you know, their NCAA playoff game.
00:47:05
Speaker
Yeah. See, lot of things can change in that and that in that and have first eight. And even in the bottom four, like I said, you've got... you know you if And I can't imagine... I mean, it can happen.
00:47:20
Speaker
I can see this happening where Notre Dame, Texas, and Oklahoma would all lose.
00:47:26
Speaker
And i I don't think it would hurt Texas as bad as Notre Dame and Oklahoma. And here's my reason why. Oklahoma, like you said, they've been hanging on by a thread. barrre you know Winning a game here, upset here.
00:47:43
Speaker
They lose to Alabama, makes them 7-3. I mean, they're they're pretty much done, gone, gone. Notre Dame losing to an unranked Pittsburgh. Oh, that would do it for them.
00:47:55
Speaker
That would knock them out. text Texas losing to Georgia, even though Texas would be 7-3, I still say they would have an outside inkling of maybe getting that last spot, depending on how everything else plays out.
00:48:11
Speaker
um But, yeah, I can definitely see a lot of changes happening. in the i mean, even Texas Tech, now ah I was going to say Texas Tech, but I've read that wrong. I thought they had somebody different to places. Pardon me.
00:48:24
Speaker
um You know, I mean, you could see Texas te Tech move into that top four, yeah but you know, um depending on what happens if alabama if Oklahoma upsets Alabama.
00:48:36
Speaker
Because like I said, you these teams that are playing for their lives, Notre Dame, Texas, Oklahoma, BYU, pretty much they're playing for their life. Vanderbilt is trying. You've got a lot of teams in here that out of a lot of incentive going into this weekend's games.
00:48:53
Speaker
Right, right. I think I probably agree with you though about Texas has that three laws. If there's a three-loss team that squeaks in, it would probably be them. If they went in 9-3, they lost to Georgia.
00:49:08
Speaker
And they went they finished the season at 9-3. It's a possibility, but it depends how everything else shakes out. Oh, yeah, no doubt. That would be a team, a 9-3 team, that would probably get a lot of consideration.
00:49:21
Speaker
I think if Notre Dame gets beat, they wouldn't get much consideration after going 9-3, but Texas probably would. Yeah. i mean the i mean, the two losses they've got doesn't hurt them because they were the top 10 teams.
00:49:34
Speaker
But, ah well, actually, if Miami... doesn't keep winning it, that will could actually affect Notre Dame because what was Miami was number two or number four when when they beat Notre Dame.
00:49:47
Speaker
And now they're down to, you know, they're they're dropping rapidly. I mean, theyre well, they they rose this week, but they're down to 15. I mean, that kind of hurts the Notre Dame resume a little bit. And if Miami were loot were to lose another game, you know, that could even drop Notre Dame further, even if they do continue to win.
00:50:05
Speaker
Mm-hmm. run uh a couple quick things basketball season is now going so we'll probably start shifting a little do some little bit of basketball here and there uh we're still in the preseason rank things although illinois's got a big game tonight against texas tech uh be tuning into that one here soon as soon get done with the show um so uh how do you think missouri's gonna do basketball wise Well, they came in seventh in the preseason poll as far as in the SEC.
Missouri Basketball Prospects and Closing Remarks
00:50:36
Speaker
It's a tough conference. I've watched some of the early games, Don.
00:50:41
Speaker
You know, they they they've gotten better. They're stronger under the basket. They've got a real athletic seven-footer named Sean Phillips they've brought in. Plus, they've got another height in there.
00:50:53
Speaker
the the The question will be for them, I think, will be three-point shooting. They lost their three-point shooters through eligibility last year, and they've got develop, find out who's going to step up and be it. I really think that'll be the key if they can gun it from the outside.
00:51:08
Speaker
They've got the inside play to do it, I think. So they they play Minnesota tomorrow night. That's a Big Ten team. I don't know how much of a, measure that will certainly be a better measure than being a model. Yeah, it'll be a good game for them. It'll be a good test for them.
00:51:23
Speaker
I mean, i don't think I don't think Minnesota's anything of great shape. I haven't really looked at them heavily this year. i mean, I think they're picked middle of the pack in the Big Ten, so it'll be a good game for them.
00:51:34
Speaker
Mm-hmm. So as far as Illinois goes, um we've got right now we've got, as i as I've been, people have been referring to the Balkan five ah playing, ah playing pretty. David Mirkovich has just been a, I mean, he has been a complete stud. Yeah.
00:51:57
Speaker
scoring almost double-double in the first two games. The Yavisevich brothers, although we're not going to have Tomislav available tonight, he's out for tonight's game.
00:52:08
Speaker
um But his twin brother, Zanavir, has played very well. Redshirt freshman, we've got a lot we got three seven-footers on the team. um Uh, Kylan Boswell has, has picked up his three point shooting. He's hitting some really nice shots from the outside.
00:52:25
Speaker
Uh, Ben Hummerk house, uh, came back this year, was, uh, declared eligible to play. He, he's one of those guys that slipped in on that junior college rule.
00:52:36
Speaker
Where the, where the, if you played junior college during COVID, it doesn't count. Oh, So he got granted an extra year. um so he snuck in on that rule. um ah He's played very well. We got a kid, or a freshman what wrangler or wangler.
00:52:56
Speaker
um i like this kid. This kid's going to be something. If he sticks around four years, he's going to be really, really something. So looking forward to checking out that game later tonight and see how that goes on.
00:53:07
Speaker
