Furkhan interviews Laszlo (Les) Suhajda, who shares his harrowing yet inspirational story of escaping communist Hungary as a child. Les discusses the harrowing journey his family took to attain freedom, the importance of faith in overcoming tremendous adversity, and the life-altering experiences that shaped his resilience and entrepreneurial spirit. He also highlights the dangers of socialism, the impact of the Hungarian Revolution, and his entrepreneurial endeavours in the United States. The episode encapsulates the importance of historical awareness, the role of faith in sustaining community, and the pursuit of freedom through hard work and perseverance.

Laszlo (Les) Suhajda is a Hungarian-born refugee, elite multisport athlete, U.S. Navy veteran, author, and innovator in wildfire-mitigation technology. After escaping Hungary with his family following the 1956 Hungarian Revolution, Les arrived in the United States at the age of five, where his family was sponsored and resettled in Illinois—an experience that profoundly shaped his lifelong commitment to service, excellence, and gratitude.

Les distinguished himself as an exceptional athlete, competing at high levels in soccer, football, basketball, and wrestling. He set a long-standing scoring record at Aurora College in soccer and became the only wrestler in the school’s history to qualify for the NAIA National Championships. His athletic journey continued through military service, where he competed in elite soccer and advanced to the 1976 U.S. Olympic Soccer Trials.

Les is also the author of Twelve Bells to Freedom, a powerful account drawn from recorded firsthand stories of his parents’ lives in Hungary during World War II and the years leading up to their escape.

Today, Les serves as President of Laszlo Corporation, where he leads the development of USDA-approved fire-suppression and wildfire-mitigation solutions to protect homes, communities, businesses, and critical infrastructure. His work focuses on proactive fire prevention, firebreak creation, and active fire suppression technologies.
