Introduction to Solarpreneur Podcast

00:00:03
Speaker
Welcome to the Solarpreneur Podcast where we teach you to take your solar business to the next level.
00:00:08
Speaker
My name is Taylor Armstrong.
00:00:10
Speaker
I went from $50 in my bank account and struggling for groceries to closing 150 deals in the year and cracking the code on why sales reps fell.
00:00:19
Speaker
I teach you to avoid the mistakes I made and bring in the top solar dogs of the industry to let you in on the secrets of generating more leads, falling up like a pro and closing more deals.

Defining a Solarpreneur

00:00:31
Speaker
What is a solarpreneur, you might ask?
00:00:33
Speaker
A solarpreneur is a new breed of solar pro that is willing to do whatever it takes to achieve mastery, and you are about to become one.
00:00:41
Speaker
What's up, solarpreneurs?
00:00:42
Speaker
Taylor Armstrong here, back with another

Persistence in Podcasting

00:00:44
Speaker
episode.
00:00:44
Speaker
Today, we're going to talk about what is the most versatile close-in solar, a line you can use in pretty much every aspect of your closing, of your door knocking.
00:00:55
Speaker
Super powerful.
00:00:56
Speaker
You're not going to want to miss out.
00:00:57
Speaker
Before we hop into that,
00:00:59
Speaker
Obviously, welcome to the show.
00:01:01
Speaker
We're all about helping you close more deals, generate more leads and referrals, and have a better time in the solar industry.
00:01:08
Speaker
And I'll be honest, this is my second time recording this episode.
00:01:12
Speaker
I got done with an entire recording and realized my mic wasn't turned on.
00:01:17
Speaker
So audio came out pretty terrible.
00:01:20
Speaker
So I'm like, all right, I got to redo it.
00:01:23
Speaker
Hopefully it's not worse than the first time.
00:01:25
Speaker
Hopefully my thoughts are a little bit better, but hey, got to show up.
00:01:30
Speaker
We all make mistakes.
00:01:31
Speaker
Got to keep moving forward.
00:01:32
Speaker
Got to try again.

Versatile Sales Closing Line

00:01:35
Speaker
And so today on the podcast, the reason we're talking about this is because I had two deals last week where this was pretty much the line that got me to sell.
00:01:45
Speaker
And this specific line, it can be used, like I said, in anything.
00:01:49
Speaker
So we're going to jump into it.
00:01:51
Speaker
Before I tell you what it is, though, I'm going to make you listen to a quick story.

Customer-Focused Sales Strategies

00:01:56
Speaker
I'm out here.
00:01:56
Speaker
We're actually working up in Hemet, California.
00:02:00
Speaker
If you know where that is, it is super hot desert town out here in Southern California.
00:02:06
Speaker
I go up there and to my surprise, the day I get up there, I get a call from a friend of mine went to college with played in our university band.
00:02:15
Speaker
Yeah, I'm a band geek for all those who didn't know.
00:02:19
Speaker
We played in the band together.
00:02:20
Speaker
He says, Taylor, hey, I moved out here and we bought a home out in Hemet.
00:02:24
Speaker
And hey, I just signed up for solar.
00:02:27
Speaker
But I remember the year in solar.
00:02:30
Speaker
Can you take a look, see what you think of the deal I got?
00:02:34
Speaker
I'm like, all right, man, let's help you out.
00:02:37
Speaker
I go there and he had been signed up for a system that was 10 panels.
00:02:42
Speaker
He just moved into his house.
00:02:45
Speaker
But this is a desert town.
00:02:46
Speaker
It's 120 degrees in the summer.
00:02:48
Speaker
These people, we're only going to give him 10 panels up there.
00:02:51
Speaker
He has a wife.
00:02:52
Speaker
He has three kids.
00:02:53
Speaker
He has a decent sized home.
00:02:56
Speaker
I'm like, bro, that is not going to cut it, man.
00:02:58
Speaker
You're going to sweat your tails off.
00:03:00
Speaker
We got to get you more panels up there.
00:03:02
Speaker
Put some more panels up, gave him a better deal, and he was super happy about it.
00:03:08
Speaker
Hopefully he signed with me because I'm his friend too.
00:03:12
Speaker
But moral of the story, before we get into the closing line here, make sure if you are out there selling, be smart about what you're doing.
00:03:22
Speaker
Okay, don't sign up someone on deals that aren't good for them.
00:03:26
Speaker
And remember the number one, what I think is one of the most important sales rules of selling, love your customers.
00:03:33
Speaker
Okay, think if I were in this situation, would this be a good deal for me?
00:03:39
Speaker
We're not trying to screw people over.
00:03:41
Speaker
It's probably the most common thing I see is people are selling these panels at not the correct offsets.
00:03:49
Speaker
The second deal I had last week, it was a similar situation.
00:03:52
Speaker
Older lady, she, similar situation, signed a contract for a company.
00:03:59
Speaker
And keep in mind, these were recently signed contracts.
00:04:03
Speaker
Yeah, I'm not switching people over months into their contracts.
00:04:06
Speaker
Just a little side note.
00:04:08
Speaker
But she signed a similar situation.
00:04:10
Speaker
They were only giving her, I think she needed 11,000 kilowatts up there.
00:04:16
Speaker
They were giving like 9,000.
00:04:18
Speaker
And this was even worse.
00:04:19
Speaker
They said, hey, you can use unlimited energy.

Honesty and Integrity in Sales

00:04:23
Speaker
Never going to pay a bill of utility.
00:04:25
Speaker
You have unlimited energy.
00:04:27
Speaker
So first of all, do not tell your customers they have unlimited energy because that is never the case that I know of.
00:04:35
Speaker
And second of all, don't tell them that, especially if it's not even 100% offset.
00:04:40
Speaker
She was getting like an 85% offset.
00:04:43
Speaker
So we gave her more panels.
00:04:45
Speaker
We gave her a better system.
00:04:47
Speaker
And then also she had just been told some false information about warranties.
00:04:51
Speaker
They told her she was never going to have to pay anything.
00:04:55
Speaker
She lived by a golf course.
00:04:58
Speaker
And so they said it was all covered, which it wasn't.
00:05:00
Speaker
I don't know any company that covers golf ball damage.
00:05:03
Speaker
We helped her out with this.
00:05:05
Speaker
And I told you the truth.
00:05:07
Speaker
I said, hey, I'm going to be upfront with you because I don't want something happening in the panels down the road.
00:05:12
Speaker
And then you're mad because you had wrong expectations.
00:05:15
Speaker
If there is golf ball damage, it's going to fall under your homeowner's insurance.
00:05:20
Speaker
Okay, but our panels are tough, and I showed her a little, well, I got sent later, but there's a little video going around of a goat stomping on solar panels, and so I thought that was funny.
00:05:34
Speaker
Let me know if you want this.
00:05:35
Speaker
I can send you a copy of it.
00:05:38
Speaker
But I say, hey, the panels are super durable.
00:05:41
Speaker
But the truth is, it's covered by your homeowner's insurance if there's something crazy going on like golf balls or asteroids coming down and they do happen to break the panels.
00:05:51
Speaker
She was super happy, got the sale.

'If I Could, Would You' Technique

00:05:54
Speaker
Okay, and so just a side note, but the closing line that helped me close these two deals and that I've been using in almost all my sales lately is this.
00:06:03
Speaker
It's called the if I could, would you close?
00:06:06
Speaker
Okay, and most of you have probably heard about this pretty common sales closing line.
00:06:13
Speaker
If I could do this, then would you?
00:06:15
Speaker
If I could get you this price, then would you sign up?
00:06:17
Speaker
Okay.
00:06:18
Speaker
But what I love about it is it's so versatile.
00:06:21
Speaker
You can use it in so many different situations.
00:06:24
Speaker
And so I'm going to tell you a few different ways I use it in my knocking and my closing.
00:06:29
Speaker
And then what's most important is you yourself should brainstorm some ways, write down some ways you can use it and, you know, be open with it.
00:06:38
Speaker
A lot of different ways you could use it.
00:06:41
Speaker
Okay, and so first of all, in knocking, how can you use the If I Could, Would You Close?
00:06:47
Speaker
As you're out there, especially when you're in saturated markets, people have heard about solar.
00:06:51
Speaker
Okay, so a great way I like to use it is just contrasting between what they think they know about solar to what you're actually offering them.
00:07:01
Speaker
Or even if it's not a saturated market, maybe it's a new market where people have barely heard anything about solar.
00:07:07
Speaker
And so you say, if I could show you how to go solar without paying anything out of pocket, would you take a look at it?
00:07:14
Speaker
But great way to transition into setting the appointments, setting up a time.
00:07:19
Speaker
If I could get you the new information online,
00:07:21
Speaker
on solar you've been waiting for then would you take a look at it another great way and i love contrasting i've done some episodes on this but just contrasting to what they looked at before maybe it was a lease maybe it was a cash purchase to what you're now offering them okay as people can see this difference they are more likely to look at it and who's not going to be open enough to take a look at some new information that they didn't know existed
00:07:48
Speaker
If you can personalize the program to them, if you can tailor it towards what their wants and expectations are, then who's going to say no to what you look at it?
00:07:58
Speaker
Okay, another way, if you didn't have to pay a bunch of money out of your pocket, then would you consider going solar?
00:08:05
Speaker
Right.
00:08:06
Speaker
Or if we could help you go green and it didn't cost you anything and it added value to your home, then you would at least look at that.
00:08:15
Speaker
Right.
00:08:15
Speaker
Another great kind of Hail Mary.
00:08:17
Speaker
Maybe someone's told you no a bunch of times.
00:08:19
Speaker
You can throw that out there.

Setting Expectations in Sales

00:08:21
Speaker
Throw out a hook.
00:08:22
Speaker
Okay, so a ton of different ways you can use this as you're knocking on doors.
00:08:27
Speaker
And what about closing for those that are in your appointments?
00:08:31
Speaker
I'm not necessarily using this as much as an actual close, but I use it so often in my pre-frame of the deal.
00:08:38
Speaker
Okay, you all should be pre-framing your deal, setting the expectations, telling your homeowners you're going to be submitting an application to the utility and to the city to see if they can get their home approved.
00:08:52
Speaker
But as you're doing your fact finding, figuring out what their wants, needs, and expectations are, then it's a great way to throw in the if I could, would you?
00:09:03
Speaker
If I could get your bill 30% less than what it is right now, then would that be a win for you?
00:09:09
Speaker
Great line I got from one of my buddies, Bennett Maxwell, who's going to be on the podcast again soon.
00:09:15
Speaker
But he would use this all the time.
00:09:16
Speaker
It's something he taught me is instead of saying, hey, if I could do this, would you do it?
00:09:23
Speaker
That sounds like a big decision, right?
00:09:24
Speaker
Would you do it?
00:09:26
Speaker
Hey, but change that line.
00:09:28
Speaker
would that be a win for you?
00:09:30
Speaker
You're not asking, you're not saying they need to do it.
00:09:33
Speaker
You're just asking them if that's a win.
00:09:35
Speaker
Of course, it's going to be a win.
00:09:36
Speaker
And if they say it's going to be a win, then why wouldn't they do it?
00:09:41
Speaker
It's just a little tweak in how you say it that I love.
00:09:44
Speaker
And another cool thing is I love his little percentages.
00:09:49
Speaker
So what you can do, 30%, that's not that much.
00:09:53
Speaker
Right.
00:09:54
Speaker
And so depends on the market, but maybe it's 20%, 10, 20, 30%, whatever percentage you say, you can go through your numbers, just pull out your calculator, do the math for them and say, yeah.
00:10:07
Speaker
So remember how we talked about 30%.
00:10:10
Speaker
So this is actually 30% less than what you're paying.
00:10:12
Speaker
Let's do this.
00:10:13
Speaker
Boom.
00:10:14
Speaker
Do the math for them.
00:10:16
Speaker
Cause probably people aren't going to do the math in their head.
00:10:18
Speaker
What 30% is.
00:10:19
Speaker
Okay.
00:10:21
Speaker
Okay, so that's a great way as you're setting the expectations, doing your fact finding.
00:10:25
Speaker
Another great closing line.
00:10:27
Speaker
And this is, I guess, more towards California where we're getting awesome savings for people.
00:10:33
Speaker
If I could get your bill to be what you're paying in the lower months, then do you feel like solar would be a good idea?
00:10:39
Speaker
Or would solar make sense for you?
00:10:41
Speaker
Okay, sometimes people have these weird expectations of what their solar bill should be.
00:10:48
Speaker
But you take a look at their bill.
00:10:50
Speaker
You should be going over their bill with them.
00:10:51
Speaker
Hey, looks like this is one of your lowest bills.
00:10:54
Speaker
You guys only paid $120 this month.
00:10:58
Speaker
If I could get it to be that way always and you didn't see any spikes in the summer, then do you think that'd be, you know, a win?
00:11:05
Speaker
Super beneficial for you guys?
00:11:07
Speaker
Great.
00:11:09
Speaker
How about this?
00:11:09
Speaker
If we could get your solar up before the summer, then would there be any reason you wouldn't want to get it up there as soon as possible?
00:11:17
Speaker
Okay, or get started.
00:11:19
Speaker
Kind of an assumption based close.
00:11:21
Speaker
I love doing that one.
00:11:22
Speaker
That's another common one is when would you want your solar up there?
00:11:26
Speaker
Just as soon as possible.
00:11:28
Speaker
Love those assumption closes.
00:11:31
Speaker
Another one, if your home gets approved by the utility, then would there be any reason that solar wouldn't be a good idea in your head?

Securing Agreement with Closing Lines

00:11:39
Speaker
And this is one I probably use towards the end of my close in most of my presentations.
00:11:45
Speaker
I say, great, we've gone through all the information.
00:11:47
Speaker
Mr. Homeowner, let me ask you.
00:11:49
Speaker
There's still a few steps to see if solar is even, you know, an option for the home, see if your home is eligible.
00:11:55
Speaker
But if we can get everything approved, if everything checks out on our ends, then would there be any reason that you could think of this solar wouldn't be a good idea for you guys home or for your situation?
00:12:06
Speaker
No?
00:12:06
Speaker
Awesome.
00:12:07
Speaker
So what we'll do today, we're going to fill out a few forms, get your okay on a few things.
00:12:12
Speaker
I'm going to get you everything in writing and then get you scheduled for the site survey.
00:12:17
Speaker
What was, just to confirm, what was the spelling of the last name or what was the phone number or what was the email again, go directly into your application.
00:12:25
Speaker
Boom.
00:12:26
Speaker
So I hope that gives you a few ideas on how to use the if I could.
00:12:30
Speaker
Would you close?
00:12:31
Speaker
Hey, again, go write out your ideas, jot them down.
00:12:35
Speaker
You probably can think of a hundred other ways to use this.
00:12:38
Speaker
You can also use it in your relationships or in your everyday life.
00:12:43
Speaker
Hey, baby, if I could get you a little treat tonight, then would you give me a massage or...
00:12:51
Speaker
Show me a good time tonight.
00:12:52
Speaker
I don't know.
00:12:52
Speaker
Whatever.
00:12:53
Speaker
For all you married folk.
00:12:54
Speaker
Okay.
00:12:55
Speaker
About a million different ways to use this.
00:12:57
Speaker
Hope it helps.
00:12:58
Speaker
Send this to someone that could use a fresh new close or a fresh way to use the if I could, would you close?
00:13:06
Speaker
And as always, brainstorm yourself and share the episode if it has helped you.
00:13:14
Speaker
And apologize if you heard a crying kid in the background, by the way.
00:13:18
Speaker
Got some crying babies back here.
00:13:20
Speaker
But hopefully you got some value from this.
00:13:22
Speaker
And we'll see you on the next podcast.

Resources and Top Episodes

00:13:26
Speaker
What's up, Solopreneurs?
00:13:27
Speaker

00:13:29
Speaker
Before you run out and start selling more solar yourself, wanted to let you know about an exciting new cheat sheet we created specifically for you in mind.
00:13:40
Speaker

00:14:40
Speaker
So go download it and we'll see you on the other side.
