Importance of Consistency in Solar Sales

00:01:44
Speaker
So guys, today I want to talk about consistency.
00:01:49
Speaker
Consistency in everything from sales to marketing to prospecting to how you close, how consistency applies to everything across the board.
00:01:59
Speaker
And I talk about this quote a lot.
00:02:00
Speaker
It is my favorite quote.
00:02:02
Speaker
How you do anything is how you do everything.
00:02:05
Speaker
Meaning if you're inconsistent in one area of your life, you're going to be inconsistent in another one.
00:02:11
Speaker
It's guaranteed because it's human psychology.
00:02:14
Speaker
Our brain treats various activities similar.
00:02:17
Speaker
There's a web in between each of them.
00:02:19
Speaker
Meaning how I do something here is going to be very similar with how I do it here.
00:02:23
Speaker
That's how the brain is wired and
00:02:25
Speaker
And that's why it's important to get your habits and your discipline structured out on a day-to-day basis.
00:02:30
Speaker
So consistency is one of the biggest things sales professionals are lacking.
00:02:35
Speaker
And as I see as a trainer, as a solar trainer that's trained hundreds of solar reps, I notice that inconsistency is one of the biggest things that keeps them from not only staying in the industry, but just reaching their goals and not getting burnt out, okay?

Building and Maintaining a Sales Pipeline

00:02:52
Speaker
Now, consistency in sales is probably the most important area because if I'm not consistent in filling up my pipeline this week, if I'm not consistent in finding new prospective clients and business, then next week, tomorrow, a month from now, a year from now,
00:03:11
Speaker
the consequence of my actions is going to show.
00:03:13
Speaker
Because sales is one of those things where it's not just today.
00:03:18
Speaker
Yes, we want to make sales today, but that's not going to happen as much.
00:03:22
Speaker
Often, it's a matter of building, right?
00:03:24
Speaker
We're building the blocks that it takes.
00:03:26
Speaker
We're building up the pipeline.
00:03:27
Speaker
We're building, building, building so that later, a month, two, three, four, six months down the road, we're going to benefit from what we did today.
00:03:36
Speaker
So the deal is, it's just like planting a tree, right?
00:03:39
Speaker
The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago.
00:03:42
Speaker
The second best time is today.
00:03:45
Speaker
So what you do today is gonna affect how much money you make,
00:03:50
Speaker
three, six, twelve months down

Challenges of Holiday Sales Slumps

00:03:53
Speaker
the road.
00:03:53
Speaker
You name it.
00:03:54
Speaker
Because if you look at a salesperson's pipeline, especially around like the holidays, for example, it's October at the time this recording, the holidays are just around the corner.
00:04:04
Speaker
As November and December rolls in, a lot of professionals start to slack off, especially in the solar industry, because it's not hot.
00:04:12
Speaker
Right.
00:04:13
Speaker
It's not the summer season, depending where you live.
00:04:15
Speaker
I live in Utah.
00:04:16
Speaker
So we start getting snow and people are like, oh, man, I don't want to sell solar in the winter.
00:04:21
Speaker
Right.
00:04:22
Speaker
Well, personally, actually, the winter has been one of the most profitable months for solar for me because the competition is lower because everybody else is slacking off.
00:04:31
Speaker
But as the holidays come around and everybody starts taking days off, weeks off, spending too much time with family and friends, they take the whole month of December off, guess what happens in January, February, and March?
00:04:44
Speaker
They're the lowest sales months of the entire year.
00:04:49
Speaker
And that's with most industries, but solar especially, January through spring,
00:04:54
Speaker
are the worst months, the lowest numbers, the lowest number of installs.
00:04:59
Speaker
And it's because of the inconsistent behaviors of sales professionals.
00:05:04
Speaker
And if you're not acting as enthusiastic, as powerful as you were in July, as you do in November and December,
00:05:13
Speaker
then your results are going to be inconsistent.
00:05:15
Speaker
You're going to get the sales roller coaster, as we talk about, as we hear so often.
00:05:20
Speaker
Consistency is the key to avoiding the inconsistent results.
00:05:24
Speaker
And super simple, right?
00:05:26
Speaker
Consistency beats inconsistency.
00:05:31
Speaker
Messing with my mouth there, but you get the picture.
00:05:34
Speaker
So if I'm not prospecting every day, it's going to affect it.
00:05:38
Speaker
And you'll notice even on a sales month, professionals will, sales pros will, at the end of the month, they're scramming to get their deals done, right?

Balancing Closing Deals and Prospecting

00:05:47
Speaker
To get those deals done at the last two weeks.
00:05:49
Speaker
And why are they scrambling so much at the last two weeks?
00:05:54
Speaker
Well, it starts with that time period.
00:05:56
Speaker
Because look, if I'm spending the last 14 days of my month in October here closing deals, and all I'm doing is closing deals, spending all day on appointments, I'm just trying to close deals so I can make my commission check, make my quota, whatever it is.
00:06:13
Speaker
Well, guess what?
00:06:14
Speaker
I didn't spend any time filling up my pipeline for the next month.
00:06:18
Speaker
So what happens now?
00:06:21
Speaker
November 1st rolls around and I don't have any appointments to go on anymore.
00:06:26
Speaker
I'm not closing anything because I didn't spend time filling up my calendar at the end of this month.
00:06:33
Speaker
And that's a very common trap professionals get into is they spend all their time closing.
00:06:38
Speaker
They don't have any time to prospect or they spend all their time prospecting and they don't have any time to close.
00:06:44
Speaker
You need to spread the wealth out.
00:06:46
Speaker
You need to prospect and close evenly the entire time.
00:06:49
Speaker
That way your income is consistent with how you want it.
00:06:53
Speaker
Now, if you're okay with the inconsistent results, that's cool.
00:06:55
Speaker
But once we roll around into a season like November or December, when we don't have as much time, even the most diligent professional is still going to take a little bit of time off in the holiday and it's going to throw stuff off.

Top Performer Strategies During Low Seasons

00:07:10
Speaker
And it's not just that.
00:07:11
Speaker
Your customer as well
00:07:13
Speaker
your potential customer is also going to take time off and it's a little bit more difficult.
00:07:17
Speaker
You have to accommodate.
00:07:19
Speaker
But what if you prepared earlier in the year and you set up more deals in the pipeline for when December rolls around?
00:07:27
Speaker
then you're going to be the most profitable sales guy at the company.
00:07:30
Speaker
You're going to be killing it, and everybody's going to be wondering what you're doing.
00:07:33
Speaker
For me personally, I've gotten more promotions during the holiday season because everybody else is slacking off, and I knew how to accommodate.
00:07:41
Speaker
I knew how to build my pipeline up to that point so I could benefit during when it was a little bit drier, right?
00:07:47
Speaker
When the season was drier, there was a drought.
00:07:50
Speaker
So act consistent with everything from prospecting to how many appointments you go on, how many calls you make, how many direct messages you send out, emails, follow-ups.
00:08:02
Speaker
Everything needs to be consistent because if you lack inconsistency in one area, it's going to show up 10 times the amount later on.
00:08:11
Speaker
If I don't follow up with my prospects or I follow up just when I feel like it, then I'm going to lose those deals.
00:08:19
Speaker
Make sure you're consistent in everything and you're going to be better off than 99% of solar professionals.
00:08:26
Speaker
So guys, that's it for today's or this week's shorter podcast.
