Speaker: Previously on Buffy the Vampire Slayer, the overall theme, I think, for this episode is not just facing your fear and your worst nightmare, what does that look like when it comes true, and how that all interlaces with each character as well.

Speaker: But the episode itself, the overall show, is one of foreshadowing.

Speaker: I wish they sort of made a bit more of this where she's like, looks at him thinking, I could eat you right now.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: Couldn't we all?

Speaker: And it's a paisley scarf, isn't it?

Speaker: That's what it is.

Speaker: Hi everybody, welcome back to another episode of previously on Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

Speaker: We are almost finished season one now, the finish line is in sight.

Speaker: And speaking of sight, the episode that we are watching this time is season one, episode 11, Out of Mind, Out of Sight.

Speaker: So what are your initial thoughts on this episode?

Speaker: We're most of the way through now.

Speaker: How does it stand up compared to the others?

Speaker: Do you know, I actually forgot how much I enjoy this episode.

Speaker: Again, I think you can sort of, because it's sandwiched between two amazing episodes.

Speaker: And of course, it's the precursor to...

Speaker: the season finale, I think I'm definitely guilty of forgetting about it.

Speaker: But there is some fantastic one-liners.

Speaker: I think, I mean, the previous episode...

Speaker: Everyone goes up a gear.

Speaker: All the characters, they really settle into, you know, they know.

Speaker: They know who they're playing, the cast.

Speaker: You know, they've really got it down.

Speaker: And this is like the first, say, standalone episode where they can really do that.

Speaker: They can really sort of delve into and expand what we know about the characters.

Speaker: And I really enjoyed it.

Speaker: Really, really enjoyed that.

Speaker: this I've never not enjoyed it but yeah I forgot how good it is yeah it's a nice reminder yeah it's been a real pleasure watching it and I think well we said this last time we're really we're well overdue

Speaker: some Cordy, proper Cordy moments, you know, where it's not just fitting in between, you know, as light relief or, you know, she's there just to add to a scene and then she disappears.

Speaker: This is a Cordy-centric episode.

Speaker: It is, yeah.

Speaker: It's kind of a turning point for her relationships with everybody else, especially Buffy.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: We obviously won't get into it just yet, but when we move on to the season finale, you see more of that based on what happens in this episode.

Speaker: You can see how the interactions are developing.

Speaker: Yes.

Speaker: And she kind of gets integrated more with the rest of the gang, which is nice.

Speaker: It is.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: And it's very naturally done because before this episode, you know, if you were to see, I don't know,

Speaker: episode one and then, I don't know, episode five of season two, you'd be like, really?

Speaker: How did that happen?

Speaker: And this is sort of the catalyst for that.

Speaker: I really, really enjoyed it.

Speaker: So it's going to be difficult choosing...

Speaker: a favorite episode of the season it will and even as you said the one-liners in this episode it every episode has them but for me never kill a boy on the first date had so many and this kind of reminds me a little bit of that in that i struggled to choose a best line so um so we're actually we start with the prologue

Speaker: And this is actually, you know, with that, the really 90s voice guy, this is the last time in this season that we hear that.

Speaker: So again, it sort of sets up.

Speaker: It's a reminder that, you know, this is about the Slayer, one girl in all the world, et cetera.

Speaker: And then we're straight into the exterior shot of the school day starting, the Sunnydale High.

Speaker: And we're in the corridor and we see,

Speaker: Cordy with this guy called Mitch with his arm around her so they're dating and Cordy's friend who is called Harmony, Harmony Kendall

Speaker: Yeah, we saw her early on, but she's kind of rejoining us now.

Speaker: Yes, she was unnamed.

Speaker: I think this is the episode that she is named.

Speaker: So I love her top, her little kitty top.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: She's got.

Speaker: And yeah, but they're talking about being elected.

Speaker: Well, sorry, Cordy is talking about being elected May Queen.

Speaker: what the plan is, you know, it's happening.

Speaker: Mitch is going to be her date, her escort.

Speaker: It's all, I mean, Corny's like, well, I've not been elected May Queen yet, but it will happen, you know.

Speaker: Yeah, the confidence.

Speaker: And as they're walking past the library, the doors open, Buffy runs out and bangs into Mitch and

Speaker: And drops her bag.

Speaker: All her Slayer gear.

Speaker: And it's pretty, it's hardcore stuff.

Speaker: I mean, there's a stake, there's a crucifix, which, you know, okay, fine.

Speaker: And then there's this mace.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: There's a machete.

Speaker: It's pretty deep, heavy stuff, hardcore stuff.

Speaker: And Buffy's literally just desperately trying to tidy all of it up.

Speaker: But people see, she's, oh, yeah, you're probably wondering what I'm doing with this stuff.

Speaker: And Cordy's like, wow, I'm not.

Speaker: Oh, it's for history class.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: Mr. Giles has this hobby.

Speaker: He sort of collects stuff.

Speaker: And yeah, he let me borrow some for show and tell.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: And, you know, did I mention it was for history class?

Speaker: It's always history as well.

Speaker: That seems to be the go-to.

Speaker: It's a recurring theme.

Speaker: But this has got to be one of my favourite lines.

Speaker: Yeah, it just prompts Harmony to say, she's always hanging with that creepy librarian in that creepy library game.

Speaker: And I love this.

Speaker: It sort of pulls back to the perspective of the school where you think, yeah, everyone has noticed, you know, they have not got away with the fact that it's just it's odd that this school girl hangs around.

Speaker: With this librarian and her friends, there always seems to be something, some shit going off.

Speaker: And it's, you know, people are just ignoring it.

Speaker: They're not unaware of it.

Speaker: And, you know, they walk off again.

Speaker: Cordy's like, did I ever tell you about that time she attacked me in the bronze?

Speaker: But Cordy's dress is

Speaker: beautiful it's lovely it's like this open neck collar as well it's really lovely and I think this this is the first point of the I mean the theme of this episode is is isolation is it's loneliness yeah and what that will do to someone um but along with of course you know we have Marcy who we meet later on but we also see Buffy experiencing isolation and loneliness and

Speaker: And this is a manifestation of that.

Speaker: And it, you know, it leaves her knowing that she's the odd one out.

Speaker: You know, she's seen as weird.

Speaker: She's got her friends, but it's still, I mean, she's the slayer as well, which obviously not many people realise, but that in itself isolates you, even from your friends, as we see countless times over the course of the seasons.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: And it's, you know, you just, again, Sarah Michelle Gellar, she just doesn't, she doesn't need to say that, you know, it's just her expression and you can sort of, you get the impression that she, it's taking its toll on her, but we're then in class and she

Speaker: We have a teacher, well, she's discussing Act 3 of The Merchant of Venice by William Shakespeare, and they're discussing Shylock and his behavior and certain lines, etc.

Speaker: And I love Cordy's opinion.

Speaker: I mean, I love the fact she's so engaged with it.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: But she is, I don't know what play she's read.

Speaker: Yeah, she says he should just get over himself.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: Which is kind of how I viewed Hamlet when I did that in school.

Speaker: It's funny.

Speaker: And Willow is sat behind her and Willow's face is just listening.

Speaker: She's like, the fuck are you talking about, Cordelia?

Speaker: But I think I might have.

Speaker: I'm not sure if it's my favorite outfit yet, but Willow is wearing a Scooby-Doo T-shirt, and it is amazing.

Speaker: Because, of course, they are known as the Scooby Gang later on.

Speaker: I mean, they're still not named as Scoobies yet.

Speaker: That's yet to come, but I do wonder if they knew about this before and put it in.

Speaker: You would think so, yeah.

Speaker: Yeah, so...

Speaker: But yeah, I love how when the teacher, I think Miss Miller, we find out her name later on.

Speaker: That's it, yes.

Speaker: She tells Cordelia that she's made good observations and Willow just rolls her eyes in the background.

Speaker: It is, it's so good.

Speaker: And, you know, you've got Harmony there, you've got Zander, but there's no Buffy.

Speaker: Buffy's not in this class.

Speaker: But at the end of the class, Cordelia heads over to Miss Miller and says, I need some help with my next assignment.

Speaker: You know, I just feel like I'm contradicting myself.

Speaker: It's like, really?

Speaker: Do you really?

Speaker: I have all these thoughts.

Speaker: They're all unfocused.

Speaker: And they arranged to have a catch up.

Speaker: tomorrow after school and Miss Millie's going to give Cordy a hand and go over her notes and things so yeah so Cordy's living in the life she's happy she's positive she's

Speaker: going to be the May Queen.

Speaker: And she joins Harmony and she strides off down the hall.

Speaker: And she says something.

Speaker: It did actually make me giggle.

Speaker: It's about her dress.

Speaker: It's so great.

Speaker: Mitch is going to die.

Speaker: Even just that throwaway comment is about her dress.

Speaker: So we know that there's a dress thing coming up soon.

Speaker: And then we are in the locker room.

Speaker: Yes.

Speaker: The expanded locker room, which also has showers.

Speaker: And where all the bad stuff tends to happen.

Speaker: Yeah, we know what's happening now.

Speaker: Mitch is just finishing his shower.

Speaker: He's pretty much on his own.

Speaker: There's a few others there.

Speaker: And this guy goes over and says, oh, are you going to the bronze later?

Speaker: And he's like, yeah, I've got to go and pick up my tux.

Speaker: So, you know, again, he's

Speaker: just reiterating that there's something happening that night.

Speaker: And he says something derogatory about Cordelia.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: The guy makes a comment about him being on Cordelia's arm and he says, oh, it's not her arm I'm looking to be on.

Speaker: It's like, ugh.

Speaker: All right, mate.

Speaker: It's like, oh, okay.

Speaker: You don't love yourself at all.

Speaker: I mean, I can't even imagine Xander saying that about Buffy.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: You know what I mean?

Speaker: There's just...

Speaker: Yeah, it's just tough guy talk, isn't it?

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: And then we hear this giggling.

Speaker: This girl is a girl giggle.

Speaker: And it's not necessarily jovial either.

Speaker: There's something underlyingly disturbed about it.

Speaker: And Mitch looks around, asks, is anyone there?

Speaker: And just carries on.

Speaker: Then there's a girl's giggle again.

Speaker: And we get this view, which back in the days, obviously, you wouldn't have noticed this on a small screen, but the entire screen looks so different.

Speaker: It looks like a computer game.

Speaker: And we know there's going to be graphics coming up because of it.

Speaker: And he reaches for this baseball bat, which is conveniently just sat on the top of the locker.

Speaker: And before he grabs it, it elevates on its own, levitates rather, and proceeds to beat him up.

Speaker: Other than the poor graphics, I thought he did a good job of that.

Speaker: It looked like he was genuinely being beaten up.

Speaker: And then we're straight into the theme.

Speaker: And when we come back from that...

Speaker: Cordelia is going around asking everybody to, well, asking, more like telling them to vote for her for May Queen and she's handing out chocolates as a kind of a bribe.

Speaker: With a C, which Harmony has to clarify.

Speaker: Is that for Cordelia?

Speaker: She's like, well, no, it's for Wilma.

Speaker: What do you think?

Speaker: She's so nice to all of her friends.

Speaker: So she just treats everyone with the same disdain.

Speaker: So at least she's consistent.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: And she says something like, you know, so when people think of me, they associate me with something sweet.

Speaker: It's like, well, bless you.

Speaker: And then, yeah, this is Cordelia's campaign towards Buffy where she's like, oh, here, have a, oh, no, you don't need a chocolate.

Speaker: I don't need the loony fringe vote.

Speaker: The loony fringe.

Speaker: That's awful.

Speaker: It's just, I think, Cordy, there's no need for that.

Speaker: Complete digression from the whole plot.

Speaker: And we chatted about the internal pictures and stuff of Willow's locker last episode.

Speaker: Can we just talk about Buffy's very briefly?

Speaker: Yes.

Speaker: She has, and I really want one.

Speaker: She has like a hook, which is clearly like for a bag or a coat.

Speaker: And it's a finger.

Speaker: It's horrible.

Speaker: But I think I've got vague recollections of those from my school days.

Speaker: But yeah, she has a finger sticking out.

Speaker: Not much else.

Speaker: There's a few like nondescript pictures of guys in a suit and stuff.

Speaker: But yeah, there was a finger.

Speaker: All while this is happening, the interaction between Cordy and Buffy is coming to a head.

Speaker: And Buffy again is, well, she loses this round again to Cordy.

Speaker: And she tries to retaliate.

Speaker: She's like, well, I don't even like chocolates.

Speaker: She's like, oh, that was such a shit comeback.

Speaker: And she's then joined by...

Speaker: Willow and Xander.

Speaker: And they're sort of like, oh, Cordy's just been Cordy.

Speaker: She's bribing everyone, desperate to be May Queen.

Speaker: And they're like, well... They start having a little in-joke laughing about her history of trying too hard and recalling

Speaker: That annoying thing actually where people are laughing about something you had no involvement in.

Speaker: Instead of kind of trying to fill you in and get you up to speed on what happened.

Speaker: It's kind of like it ends up making Buffy appear more isolated.

Speaker: Yes.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: And this is just another example.

Speaker: So there's the deliberate isolation that you will face with people making sure that you are left out.

Speaker: And then there's that other type of isolation where, and it feels the same, it's very similar, where even your friends, they unsuspectingly do that to you as well.

Speaker: And no one means to do it, but we've all been there.

Speaker: And yeah, the in-joke,

Speaker: Xander and Willow, they don't even share it.

Speaker: They're like, oh, you know, you had to be there.

Speaker: And we've all been there.

Speaker: And Buffy even says, you know, oh, shall we just talk in tongues all day?

Speaker: And they're like, oh, sorry.

Speaker: Yeah, we had this, you know, you had to be there.

Speaker: It's not even funny.

Speaker: Don't worry about it.

Speaker: You know, they go back to Cordy saying, don't worry about Cordy.

Speaker: She's, you know, ignore her.

Speaker: She's just being her.

Speaker: And they've just missed the point that they have actually left Buffy out herself.

Speaker: And then Xander kind of puts his foot in it even more by asking what kind of moron would want to be May Queen anyway.

Speaker: And Buffy says, I was.

Speaker: Me.

Speaker: Yeah, at my old school.

Speaker: So there's a kind of a bit of awkward backtracking then.

Speaker: Yeah, it's like, oh, you know, the good kind of moron, the non-moron, I mean.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: And she's like, yeah, you know, it was something I had in my old school life.

Speaker: And no, it's fine.

Speaker: That whole moment is interrupted by this guy who's like, hey, everyone, I've been given some lines, I'm going to interrupt.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: Mitch has been whacked in the locker room.

Speaker: And we get Snyder.

Speaker: I mean, I love this guy anyway, but we haven't had Snyder since the puppet show, have we?

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: No, we haven't.

Speaker: And I must say, he does not disappoint.

Speaker: He's like, dead?

Speaker: Of course not.

Speaker: There are no dead students here.

Speaker: Are you ghouls?

Speaker: It's like, there's no, yeah, that was it.

Speaker: There's no dead students here this week.

Speaker: Um, and, uh, Mitch is wheeled out on a stretcher.

Speaker: Buffy's there straight away.

Speaker: You know, what's happened?

Speaker: What happened?

Speaker: You know, who did this to you?

Speaker: And he's like, I heard something and, and I tried to pick up the bat and it hit me.

Speaker: And they're like, who hit you?

Speaker: He's like the bat, the thing was floating.

Speaker: And Buffy's like, I'm going to go check out the scene.

Speaker: And she storms off.

Speaker: Snyder is straight on a warning her not to interfere.

Speaker: He just does not trust these guys at all.

Speaker: Yeah, he's like, where do you think you're going?

Speaker: She's like, oh, Mitch wanted his comb.

Speaker: He likes his comb.

Speaker: Willow tries to distract him by pretending that Mitch is going to sue the school, which...

Speaker: Yes.

Speaker: Completely takes Snyder's attention.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: He's like, run off.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: Pulls him out.

Speaker: He's like, what do you mean?

Speaker: What did he say?

Speaker: He's going to sue.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: His dad's like, have you not heard of the lawyer?

Speaker: His dad is a lawyer.

Speaker: He's called the beast.

Speaker: And yeah, it's really, really bad.

Speaker: And Buffy takes the opportunity to slink out.

Speaker: But yeah, Snyder's interaction is, is, is great.

Speaker: And I've been waiting to say this because this is the first head to toe of Buffy, which is just stunning.

Speaker: It's her entire outfit is amazing.

Speaker: I think I might have to say this is the outfit.

Speaker: It's just it's gorgeous.

Speaker: I love I love her skirt.

Speaker: It's very of the time.

Speaker: You know, and you've got the really chunky boots.

Speaker: But she walks very carefully into the locker room.

Speaker: She sees the bat lying on the floor.

Speaker: It's completely, completely inanimate.

Speaker: She gives it a quick kick and heads over to the lockers where all the doors are open, closes them all up.

Speaker: And she sees...

Speaker: in graffiti the word look which is of course a clue so whoever or whatever this thing is is leaving messages behind yeah

Speaker: And the guys are discussing it next scene in the cafeteria.

Speaker: And then Giles turns up and joins them.

Speaker: I love this.

Speaker: Which does absolutely nothing for the image of why is he hanging around with them?

Speaker: She's always hanging out with that creepy librarian.

Speaker: in the creepy library.

Speaker: It's like, not just the creepy library.

Speaker: He's everywhere.

Speaker: He's literally like Buffy's shadow.

Speaker: I just love the fact that people have noticed, but they're just ignoring it.

Speaker: It's like, oh, it's perfectly safe.

Speaker: He's fine.

Speaker: And it's like, does he have no friends in the staff room?

Speaker: He clearly does not.

Speaker: Well, we saw one of the teachers last episode.

Speaker: I mean, I wouldn't go anywhere near that guy with that awful jacket.

Speaker: But yeah, so he's been, you know, catching up with them and saying, have you got any theories?

Speaker: And he's like, well, a bit of a puzzle, really.

Speaker: It's never heard of anyone being attacked by a lone baseball bat.

Speaker: And this is my favorite line.

Speaker: This is it.

Speaker: And it's Xander.

Speaker: I must say Xander in this episode.

Speaker: He excels.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: And he says, maybe it's a vampire bat.

Speaker: I'm alone with that one, huh?

Speaker: I'm sorry.

Speaker: It's my, it really amuses me, this one, every time.

Speaker: But I think it's, he's like, I'm alone with that one, huh?

Speaker: It's like, no, I'm there with you, Xander.

Speaker: But it's their look.

Speaker: And Giles sort of ignores him completely.

Speaker: And he gets back to business, assuming that the bat itself is not possessed.

Speaker: You know, there's a few possibilities.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: telekinesis that's it yeah uh an invisible creature or a poltergeist

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: And I think, does Willow go, oh, a ghost?

Speaker: It's like, yeah, a very angry one.

Speaker: And Willow then says, well, if it's a ghost, we're talking about a dead kid, a dead person.

Speaker: So they're like, why don't we just go and compile a list of dead or missing kids, you know, through that illegal hacking that you do?

Speaker: Let's go and do that again.

Speaker: Put those skills to use.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: So Giles heads and says, well, I'm going to go and look at the possibilities of ghosts.

Speaker: And he asks Xander, would you like to help me if you don't have anything else on?

Speaker: And everyone's in shock.

Speaker: Yeah, he's like, what is homework?

Speaker: Especially Xander.

Speaker: So, but Buffy's like, well, you know, you want to be part of the gang and it's not all glamour and I've got to go and do this.

Speaker: And Xander's like, well, I want to do that part.

Speaker: I want to, you know, go and talk to people and talk to his friends.

Speaker: You can talk to Cordelia.

Speaker: And then he's suddenly not so keen.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: We're having a picture painted here of how much Xander really dislikes Cordelia.

Speaker: And we know what this means, guys.

Speaker: We'll get there.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: But Xander, I love his hair in this episode.

Speaker: He looks really nice in this episode.

Speaker: And then we're back to Cordelia and Harmony and they're chatting about Mitch.

Speaker: And the fact that Cordy went and visited him, therefore missing fifth period.

Speaker: And the doctor says that he'll be fine.

Speaker: But you should have seen him.

Speaker: He's lying there all black and blue.

Speaker: I mean, he's going to finish, ruin all the prom pictures.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: You think, oh, Cordy.

Speaker: Yeah, just waiting for her to get to the point there.

Speaker: It's like she's being too sympathetic.

Speaker: Yeah, and the Harmony's like, they do wonders with airbrushes now.

Speaker: She's like, oh, you think?

Speaker: It's terrible.

Speaker: And then we get our flashback, sepia tone flashback.

Speaker: The first of a few of these.

Speaker: Yeah, and it is actually, this is the only time that we ever have anything like this in Buffy.

Speaker: Yeah, I think it worked really well for this.

Speaker: And it clearly indicates a previous occasion at school.

Speaker: And it's exactly the same scene, essentially.

Speaker: So you've got the same two characters.

Speaker: They're in different costumes.

Speaker: But they're still talking about Mitch.

Speaker: So we think, oh, OK, this is probably a few weeks ago.

Speaker: And we then see this other girl go up to them and say, hi, guys.

Speaker: And they're like, what do you want?

Speaker: And then it flashes straight back to the present day where they're walking along the balcony heading towards the stairs.

Speaker: And Buffy interjects and says, Cordy, can I talk to you?

Speaker: And Cordy's like, oh, great.

Speaker: And just as that's happening, Harmony...

Speaker: gets shoved well it's almost like she's pulled down the stairs and she hurts her ankle and the next thing snyder is there and he sends a girl to to go and get the school nurse yeah he's like oh for heaven's sake we can't have any more dead students this week not today please yeah so again buffy's there and she's like what happened

Speaker: And Snyder's like, who's the principal here?

Speaker: What happened?

Speaker: So it's certainly a power play between Snyder and Buffy, which is a fantastic dynamic.

Speaker: Because again, you know, well, he is an authority figure.

Speaker: He's obviously been the principal, but I just love how Buffy doesn't see the authority figures as necessary.

Speaker: I don't mean the sense, I mean, she does have respect for people, but she has respect for people if they earn it.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: It's not automatically given just because they are the principal or she did it with Giles as well.

Speaker: Just because he's a watcher, he needs to earn her respect.

Speaker: And I like that about Buffy's approach towards adults.

Speaker: So it's a very mature outlook.

Speaker: So, yeah, it's great to see that dynamic play.

Speaker: But Buffy hears this giggle and she follows it.

Speaker: She heads through this door, up the balcony, through this door.

Speaker: And she finds herself in, I think it's just like some office, isn't it?

Speaker: That turns into the music room.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: And something shoves into her.

Speaker: She like bumps into it.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: And all this weird stuff is happening and you see the ceiling tiles move as well.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: My classroom, my band room, actually, I remember those ceiling tiles.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: We had them too in our music room in the spaces where we used to practice.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: There was one missing and there was a sandwich up there that had probably been there for years.

Speaker: I wonder if it's still there.

Speaker: I'll have to go check.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: It's probably from the invisible kid at your school.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: But yes, if Buffy's looking around, there's no one there.

Speaker: But we see the ceiling tile close on itself.

Speaker: And we know that someone is in the roof.

Speaker: Someone's in the ceiling.

Speaker: And then we're back to the lovely exterior of Sunnydale High.

Speaker: We're following a load of students coming out, walking out.

Speaker: And then there's these two black suited guys.

Speaker: Just stood very, very inconspicuously.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: Keeping an eye out before we then we head to the next meet of the gang.

Speaker: It's the same day.

Speaker: You've got Willow's Scooby-Doo T-shirt.

Speaker: Buffy's got this gorgeous jacket.

Speaker: I love it.

Speaker: I really love her outfits in this episode.

Speaker: And she's talking about her experience.

Speaker: And she asks Giles, she's like, what have you ever had an interaction with a ghost?

Speaker: Have you ever touched a ghost?

Speaker: And he says, I haven't.

Speaker: But apparently it's, you know, it's quite cold.

Speaker: It makes your hair stand on end.

Speaker: And she's like, well, this thing bumped into me.

Speaker: It wasn't cold.

Speaker: And it didn't go through her.

Speaker: And it didn't go through.

Speaker: So and Zanna's like, so you're talking about an invisible person.

Speaker: And Bobby's like, it's a girl.

Speaker: She laughed.

Speaker: It was a girl.

Speaker: And it has to be somebody on campus.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: Xander's like, that is so cool to have the ability to become invisible.

Speaker: I would give anything to turn invisible, but I'd use my powers for good, you know, to protect the girl's locker room.

Speaker: And I love, I forgot about this.

Speaker: I missed this interaction.

Speaker: And Giles then says, it must be a fairly heady experience.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: And they all look at him.

Speaker: They're like, what?

Speaker: And he goes, having that ability, he has to clarify, not looking at, you know, guarding the girl's locker room.

Speaker: And Willow's like, is she a witch?

Speaker: Is that how she got the power?

Speaker: Because, you know, we can fight witches, which is again another callback to episode three.

Speaker: And she's like, yeah, you know, that's easy.

Speaker: We did that last time.

Speaker: Yeah, that box is ticked.

Speaker: And Xander has done his homework.

Speaker: He's talking about cloaks of invisibility.

Speaker: And he's like, yeah, get me with the knowledge.

Speaker: They say, well, it can't be a god, you know.

Speaker: But she has got a grudge.

Speaker: But why Harmony and Mitch?

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: And they're like, hang on, what's the most common denominator?

Speaker: It's Cordelia.

Speaker: Cordelia.

Speaker: Xander and Willow then head off to the school bus and Giles asks Buffy what she's going to do.

Speaker: And she says she'll start the hunt.

Speaker: And another great line, actually.

Speaker: He says, how exactly did you propose to hunt for someone you can't see?

Speaker: And then he says, you may have to work on listening to people.

Speaker: Yes.

Speaker: That is actually a post edition.

Speaker: Yeah, they put that in after the episode.

Speaker: And if you listen, it does sound very different.

Speaker: Yeah, it does actually.

Speaker: It sounds a lot more crisp.

Speaker: But yeah, so it's a little bit of banter where...

Speaker: He's like, you might have to listen to people.

Speaker: And she's like, oh, very funny.

Speaker: I thought so.

Speaker: And then we fast forward to the evening.

Speaker: Buffy has clearly gotten home and got changed into her leather outfit.

Speaker: And she looks gorgeous.

Speaker: I absolutely love this whole outfit.

Speaker: She slays the whole thing.

Speaker: She looks amazing.

Speaker: And she's patrolling the school hall.

Speaker: While Cordy is, why on earth is she at school doing this?

Speaker: I don't know.

Speaker: I don't understand.

Speaker: I don't know if it's.

Speaker: Yeah, I don't get it either.

Speaker: And especially clearly after hours, it's like, could you not just go to your own house and do that?

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: And just have your friends around.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: No.

Speaker: OK.

Speaker: And she's trying on her dress and she's like, oh, she'll have my hair up and all of that.

Speaker: And this other girl is holding this, this decoration.

Speaker: Randomly.

Speaker: You know, you think that's not relevant, love.

Speaker: You've just been told to pick that up and move it.

Speaker: It's like yellow, red and blue.

Speaker: And she's like, oh, look at this to her friend.

Speaker: She's like, oh, great.

Speaker: Wow.

Speaker: You think, what has that got to do with her dress?

Speaker: um anyway but we have Buffy looking through the window and it's clearly again Sarah Michelle Gellar is amazing in it where she you you just know what she's thinking she's thinking this is what I used to have and I've lost this um and again that feeling of loneliness that isolation is just seeping in but before she's

Speaker: gets lost in her thoughts, she hears this flute playing and she heads off towards its direction.

Speaker: Giles, who is working late with his research, he also hears this flute music.

Speaker: And I think he just thinks, oh, I'm hearing things now.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: And then you hear the door creak and you think, oh, no, here we go.

Speaker: As we all do, we all go, who's there?

Speaker: Is anyone there?

Speaker: And he looks in the reflection.

Speaker: I mean, I'd look at me if I looked like him.

Speaker: Oh, yeah.

Speaker: And he looks at his reflection in a pane of glass, turns, and Angel is there, but there's no reflection.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: And in case people forgot, Giles explains it again.

Speaker: Yes.

Speaker: A vampire cast, no reflection.

Speaker: This is actually the first time they ever meet.

Speaker: It is, yeah.

Speaker: But of course he knows who he is because Buffy has talked about him at length.

Speaker: So he knows exactly how she feels.

Speaker: Yeah, this tall, good-looking guy.

Speaker: Giles is like, oh, you're tall and good-looking.

Speaker: Yeah, you're him.

Speaker: You must be Angel.

Speaker: And Angel says, so are you, mate.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: I know exactly who you are as well.

Speaker: And Giles actually says, is that why you're here to see her?

Speaker: And Angel spills his heart out to Giles and says, no, I just, I can't be around her.

Speaker: It's too hard for me.

Speaker: Now, I don't...

Speaker: I don't know.

Speaker: The opportunity here for the paternal instinct for Giles was it was here.

Speaker: They could have written this and they they chose not to because Giles should have said you you stay away from her or something.

Speaker: But he's like a vampire in love with a slayer.

Speaker: It's rather poetic.

Speaker: In a maudlin sort of way.

Speaker: It's like, that is not a paternal thing to say.

Speaker: But then again, I suppose it goes back to what we've mentioned before about how people often say Giles is Buffy's father figure.

Speaker: And there's a lot of us out there who don't necessarily agree with

Speaker: Yeah, I just, I can't, I'm yet to be convinced.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: And, you know, I think the fact that, Giles, he really does care about Buffet.

Speaker: Of course he does.

Speaker: But it's a professional, he sees her as the slayer.

Speaker: And he's now growing to see her as a person and he likes her.

Speaker: But he's not sure how he likes her because, you know, they are the complete opposite of each other.

Speaker: But yeah, you know, anyone else, you'd be like, you stay away from her.

Speaker: I mean, even Xander would probably have more of a paternal instinct towards Buffy, you know, protective instinct.

Speaker: Whereas Giles is like, well, I know Buffy can handle herself.

Speaker: You know, I trust Buffy to deal with you in the best way that she knows how and

Speaker: And if she wants my advice, she'll ask for it.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: And the conversation angel, he actually becomes useful.

Speaker: This is like the first episode.

Speaker: It's a turning point for him too.

Speaker: It is, yeah.

Speaker: And I must say, he is utterly gorgeous in this episode.

Speaker: Yeah, he is.

Speaker: In an annoying kind of way.

Speaker: Oh, gosh.

Speaker: I'm not sure about the shiny, silky shirt.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: Yeah, it's very I mean, he can pull it off, but only just.

Speaker: But he he he gets straight to business with with Giles.

Speaker: And he says, I know you've been researching the master.

Speaker: And we just get a recap again.

Speaker: Oh, yes.

Speaker: The vampire king.

Speaker: I'm trying to learn as much as I can, ready for when Buffy faces him.

Speaker: And Angel, with his usual facts, says, something big is already happening.

Speaker: It's already in motion.

Speaker: I don't know what it is, but...

Speaker: It's coming.

Speaker: And Giles actually said, well, I've read what I have been able to access through the various volumes that I've got, but the most salient books on Slayer prophecy have been lost.

Speaker: And he mentions, too, the Tiberius Manifesto and the Pergamum Codex.

Speaker: Codex, yeah.

Speaker: And that's been missing since the 15th century.

Speaker: Yes.

Speaker: I love that little bit of exposition.

Speaker: And Angel's like, not lost, mislaid.

Speaker: I can get it.

Speaker: And Giles is just beside himself.

Speaker: He's actually quite animated in this scene.

Speaker: Once he realises, it's like Angel's shown an interest in what he's got to offer.

Speaker: And he's very smiley then.

Speaker: He's like, oh, great.

Speaker: He falls in love with Angel at this point.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: That is pure love there.

Speaker: He's like, a book that I don't have and you can get it?

Speaker: Oh, my word.

Speaker: Maybe I should encourage Buffy to go down this road.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: So Angel clearly wins Giles over.

Speaker: And really, with that in mind, it's quite a key scene for them.

Speaker: And as we say, Angel is finally being proactive.

Speaker: He's gone to Giles and said, I've got information.

Speaker: It's important.

Speaker: I want to look after Buffy.

Speaker: I can't be around her.

Speaker: So I'm going to have to speak to you.

Speaker: I've got to work with you to make sure that Buffy is OK and safe and prepared.

Speaker: And Giles, of course, is like, yes.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: OK, I'll take anything to make sure that that happens.

Speaker: Yeah, so Giles just falls in love with Angel.

Speaker: I don't blame him.

Speaker: He is utterly lovely.

Speaker: Angel's going, yeah, you're pretty good looking yourself.

Speaker: And he's like, yeah, thank you.

Speaker: And yeah, there's a friendship sparked there.

Speaker: There's a mutual respect.

Speaker: They then sort of have this little chat about, he's like, oh, well, this week's problem is

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: It's like, since you offered to help me, here's what I can provide you with.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: There's this invisible girl.

Speaker: Terrorizing the school.

Speaker: And Angel's like, oh, it's not really something I know about.

Speaker: It's like, yeah, I've not really, I don't, I don't either.

Speaker: I've started reading it.

Speaker: It's interesting.

Speaker: It's, yeah, it's, it's like, oh, cool.

Speaker: You know?

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: And he's like, well, it must be quite a heady experience, you know, being invisible.

Speaker: And we get a new perspective from Angel, which,

Speaker: I really I like Angel in this episode I actually begin to like him and and he he says you know it's actually one of the loneliest things you know look in the mirror every day and and not see anything there yeah what is he say it's overrated yeah

Speaker: There's that theme of isolation and loneliness again.

Speaker: So you have it with Buffy and now Angel as well.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: And of course, we have the invisible girl.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: And it's all these different types of isolation.

Speaker: You know, Buffy's experienced it through Cordelia and

Speaker: And then also Xander and Willow.

Speaker: She's seen the life that she's moved away from.

Speaker: Angel gives a different perspective to what Xander had thought.

Speaker: Giles was, I don't know, teetering on Xander's thought process of it being quite a powerful experience.

Speaker: And yeah, it's good.

Speaker: I mean, it makes you feel empathy for every type of loneliness.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: And even the people who inadvertently make Buffy feel that way experience it themselves in different ways.

Speaker: So it just shows that it's a universal experience.

Speaker: Yes.

Speaker: You can unknowingly sort of make someone else feel that way while also feeling it yourself.

Speaker: Yeah, that's it.

Speaker: And it's mindfulness, I think.

Speaker: It sort of highlights that it's important to be mindful of other people, not take anything for granted.

Speaker: And this next scene is just, this really upsets me.

Speaker: It's another sepia tone flashback.

Speaker: And we have...

Speaker: who we learn is called Marcy and she's in the girls' bathroom and Cordy and her posse, I say joint, they enter and they stand around Marcy and you think, oh, okay, so they're friends and

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: And she's laughing along with what they're saying and trying to contribute her thoughts to the conversation.

Speaker: But she's completely not there.

Speaker: There's actually a bit when Marcy says something and Cordy moves and looks as if she's looking at Marcy, but she's actually looking in the mirror.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: And when they do acknowledge her, it's kind of who asked you sort of thing.

Speaker: And they move on very quickly.

Speaker: And what she says, she says it several times about, oh, did you see his, I think they're talking about a teacher.

Speaker: And she's, oh, did you see his toupee?

Speaker: You know, he looked like a cabbage or something.

Speaker: And they ignore, ignore.

Speaker: And she says it again.

Speaker: They ignore her.

Speaker: And then Cordy says exactly the same thing.

Speaker: And it's a sense of being completely ignored and forgotten.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: And the actress who plays Marcy, it was actually one of her first acting jobs.

Speaker: And she was a huge Buffy fan of the film.

Speaker: So she jumped at the opportunity when her agent said, oh,

Speaker: This is coming up.

Speaker: Do you want to be in it?

Speaker: She was like, yeah, yeah, yeah.

Speaker: Please.

Speaker: So we leave her, well, very visibly upset and very aware that she's just been completely cold-shouldered.

Speaker: And then we're back to the present day.

Speaker: So lots of colour.

Speaker: Cordy has been crowned as May Queen and Snyder's doing it.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: Of all the people to announce Cordy is the May Queen.

Speaker: It's a wonder he didn't rope Giles into it.

Speaker: Yeah, just to punish him.

Speaker: And Cordy's like, thanks for showing up to show how much you all love me.

Speaker: And, you know, being this popular is not just my right, it's my responsibility.

Speaker: It's like, wow, okay.

Speaker: And Xander and Willow head over to Buffy, who is...

Speaker: amazingly dressed again I mean wow every outfit thus far is amazing and those sunglasses her hair everything she just looks amazing the blue neck scarf and yeah I want to claim that now as my favorite outfit this is your favorite yeah yeah it's so it's lovely and yeah I love I love all of her her outfits thus far but yeah I'm struggling to choose which one is

Speaker: Yeah, so, well, Buffy's tailing Cordy again.

Speaker: So she's got the sort of the spy vibe with the sunglasses.

Speaker: So it reminds me a little of, oh, which episode was it where she was doing that?

Speaker: She was tailing Cordy again.

Speaker: Yeah, she put the trench coat on after saying, making that sarcastic remark, was it you want me to put on a trench coat?

Speaker: Oh, which episode was it?

Speaker: I forget now.

Speaker: But yeah, she had some killer sunglasses in those as well.

Speaker: They share a few notes, don't they?

Speaker: And they realize then that there's a link between Marcy Ross and they mention that Marcy's disappeared.

Speaker: They also mention they do not remember her at all.

Speaker: but she was in band yeah her only activity was band and she played the flute yes which is of course what Buffy heard the sound that Buffy heard yesterday and Giles yes so Buffy goes and investigates because she's really good at this heads back to the band room and then she spots a boot print on a chair looks up

Speaker: and thinks, aha, the ceiling tile.

Speaker: Well, it's dislodged a little.

Speaker: So she heads up into the ceiling and we get, this is very iconic actually.

Speaker: This is in the actual opening sequence where she's crawling along

Speaker: and the light hits her face and you've got this fan sort of rotating and hitting the light yeah it's really really well lit fantastic and she comes across like this little nest up in the ceiling and there's a bed and some food and sheet music yeah and she then comes across it's a yearbook isn't it yeah Marcy's yearbook along with her teddy bear yeah

Speaker: thing because you know you think you forget I think that they're only like 15 16 so and as Buffy's looking at the high school yearbook there's this knife floating behind behind our back yeah yeah and I it's the breathing the heavy breathing that they do

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: To indicate that Marcy's there.

Speaker: It gets me.

Speaker: It's like, oh no.

Speaker: Buffy doesn't notice anything and then it's gone and she climbs back down again.

Speaker: So that was a close call.

Speaker: It was a close call.

Speaker: And so Miss Miller is obviously waiting for Cordy.

Speaker: She hears something.

Speaker: She thinks it's Cordy.

Speaker: No one's there, of course.

Speaker: And then we get this giggling again.

Speaker: Yeah, you're like, oh no.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: And she gets this bag over her head.

Speaker: Yeah, plastic bag.

Speaker: Oh, it's frightening.

Speaker: It is.

Speaker: I don't know how they did that without actually doing that.

Speaker: They did it very well.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: But thankfully, Cordy is a few seconds later, she arrives and she's able to pull the bag off Miss Miller's head.

Speaker: She's unconscious.

Speaker: I love the moment that she pulls the bag.

Speaker: She can breathe again and she wakes up.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: That's, you know, it's great.

Speaker: And then we get the second message, which is chalked on the board.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: The chalk starts to write the word listen.

Speaker: So we've had look and now we have listen.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: And that actually reminded me of that scene in Matilda.

Speaker: towards the end.

Speaker: Oh my gosh.

Speaker: Where the chalk starts writing threats to Miss Trunchbull.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: Do you know, I need to see that film again.

Speaker: I love that film when it came out.

Speaker: This is the second time now Matilda's been mentioned on this podcast.

Speaker: It is.

Speaker: It is.

Speaker: Yeah, it's an omen.

Speaker: I need to go and watch it.

Speaker: We are back in the library and I must say, yeah, vision in Tweed, my word.

Speaker: Oh, yes.

Speaker: I get completely distracted.

Speaker: So I had to really pay attention about what was actually happening.

Speaker: I really like this scene.

Speaker: I think this is my favorite scene.

Speaker: of the episode.

Speaker: It's very good.

Speaker: Again, it's working everything out and the dialogue is so good.

Speaker: Yeah, it is so good.

Speaker: It's so, so funny.

Speaker: And it's got my favourite line in it actually, which I will... Oh really?

Speaker: Okay.

Speaker: When it comes up.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: Well, so Buffy heads down and she says, it was like a, well, John's like a nest and she's like, yeah, it's a full-blown nest.

Speaker: I brought this back with me and it's the yearbook.

Speaker: And she says, have a look.

Speaker: And the guys open it up and all you see is, have a nice summer.

Speaker: Have a nice summer.

Speaker: Have a nice summer.

Speaker: And Willow's like, this girl had no friends at all.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: That's what you say when you don't have anything else to say to someone, which is really sad.

Speaker: It is.

Speaker: It is.

Speaker: And Giles, because I remember, did you have a yearbook?

Speaker: Did you do yearbooks and things?

Speaker: Yeah, we did one at the end.

Speaker: And actually, this whole thing is quite relatable because there was a committee of students in charge of organizing photos of everybody to go into it.

Speaker: And I sent my photo and it was the only one that did not make it into the yearbook.

Speaker: Oh, no.

Speaker: So, I mean, I didn't really mind that much.

Speaker: I couldn't wait to leave school anyway at that point.

Speaker: But yeah, it was it wasn't great.

Speaker: But I can I can relate to this.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: In a way.

Speaker: I don't know of any happy people.

Speaker: experience or anecdote about a yearbook.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: If I'm honest.

Speaker: We had one when I, so before I went to uni, I was 17 and we had, obviously there was a yearbook involvement and I remember getting it at the end and you just judge yourself on everything, on everyone else.

Speaker: And it's just, it really isn't a healthy thing to do.

Speaker: Then you've got teachers signing it who may be

Speaker: didn't really pay that much attention to you or know much about you yeah yeah i just it's not a healthy thing no um so i i really hope that they get away they just do away with it um yeah but giles's comment yes this is my favorite line he doesn't know what's going on with all this have a nice summer and he's like once again i teeter at the precipice of the generation gap and

Speaker: While he's taking a mint.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: He's constantly... I know we've mentioned about his glasses.

Speaker: Yeah, but he does this a lot as well.

Speaker: He eats so much...

Speaker: Yeah, he does.

Speaker: It's like, now I notice this a lot.

Speaker: I notice this more than his glasses, I think.

Speaker: It's like, God, that man is eating again.

Speaker: So, because we've had an apple before and he's either, he's eating or drinking.

Speaker: Drinking tea, yeah.

Speaker: And yeah, so he's got a mint now.

Speaker: But yeah, Buffy explains, have a nice summer is what you write when you have nothing to say.

Speaker: When you don't know that person, you know, Zander's like, it's the kiss of death.

Speaker: And Buffy then points out that they also, Zander and Willow, wrote it in her yearbook and they have no recollection of it.

Speaker: Willow's like I said have a great summer I cared yeah and they just say we have no recollection and this is just again pinpointing the fact that this girl was really on her own she was really really ignored forgotten, isolated no one noticed her and Xander's like so because no one noticed her she's now invisible is that what you're saying and Giles oh my word

Speaker: Lordy, Lordy.

Speaker: Bangs on the desk.

Speaker: Yes.

Speaker: Of course.

Speaker: Do that again.

Speaker: And he gets up straight over to the book that he knows.

Speaker: I've been investigating the mystical causes of invisibility.

Speaker: I should have looked at the quantum mechanical physics.

Speaker: And Buffy's response.

Speaker: This is my favorite.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: I think I speak for everyone here when I say, huh?

Speaker: And her face, she's like, huh?

Speaker: What?

Speaker: And of course, and then we just get, oh, vision just giving us all of the facts.

Speaker: And it's a rudimentary concept that reality is shaped, even created by our perception.

Speaker: So essentially, if you are ignored, the Hellmouth below will send out mystical energy to make Marcy invisible.

Speaker: So if she's perceived as invisible, she became so.

Speaker: And again, it's just, well, because the Hellmouth, just because of the Hellmouth.

Speaker: I love it.

Speaker: So it's just the belief that he has when he explains these things, you just sort of go, yeah, OK, completely, 100% carried along with you.

Speaker: So, yeah, that has got it.

Speaker: I said my favourite scene is it's interrupted by this flashback.

Speaker: So the sepia tone.

Speaker: So we're in a classroom and even the teacher doesn't notice Marcy who has her hand up to answer questions.

Speaker: But this scene, we actually have the moment then we see Marcy becoming invisible.

Speaker: She disappears.

Speaker: Her hand fades.

Speaker: And this is actually from a very vivid dream that Joss Whedon had.

Speaker: He saw his hand disappear.

Speaker: And it also has a lot of Back to the Future vibes about it as well, where Marty fades away, doesn't he?

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: And then we are then back into the library again.

Speaker: So that is the exposition that we needed to see.

Speaker: It was given to us in flashback.

Speaker: And the gang is sat around the table, the researching.

Speaker: They say, well, no wonder she's miffed, you know, if she's become invisible.

Speaker: And Buffy is going through the yearbook still.

Speaker: And they ask, you know, what does she want?

Speaker: And she's literally like penned over Cordy's face.

Speaker: scratched her eyes out in the yearbook and just as they sort of go there we go that's that's what it is and she I think they say Cordelia and Cordelia runs in yeah this is the turning point because she's actually seeking them out she has come into the library of all places and

Speaker: And she wants to tell them that someone is after her.

Speaker: She's put two and two together as well.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: Miss Miller, Mitch, Harmony.

Speaker: It's all about me.

Speaker: Me, me, me.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: And Zander just says, after she says, oh, it's about me, me, me, me.

Speaker: And Zander's like, for once you're actually right.

Speaker: It's, yeah, this dialogue is,

Speaker: The delivery of it, everything.

Speaker: It's brilliant.

Speaker: I just, I love it.

Speaker: It's just, yeah.

Speaker: And she's panicking.

Speaker: As she says, you know, she comes in.

Speaker: She's like, I knew you'd be in here.

Speaker: I need help.

Speaker: And Buffy sort of says, well, so you've come here for help.

Speaker: And there's a moment where Buffy's like, do I help her?

Speaker: Because she has been.

Speaker: not very nice to Buffy at all.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: And two fantastic.

Speaker: Well, three great lines when she's trying to, she says, you know, I know you share this feeling that we have for each other deep down and Willow says nausea.

Speaker: I wrote nausea.

Speaker: It's brilliant.

Speaker: And she actually says, she actually even says, oh, I knew you'd been here with these total losers.

Speaker: It's like, what?

Speaker: Okay.

Speaker: And then when Giles says, I don't recall ever seeing you here before.

Speaker: And Cordelia says, no, I have a life.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: And it is the first time that we see Cordy in the library.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: But I love, again, my heart melts for this man.

Speaker: The look that Buffy gives Giles, like, you deal with her, I don't want to.

Speaker: You decide, I don't care.

Speaker: And he's like, oh, okay.

Speaker: And, oh, yeah.

Speaker: Chivalry is not dead.

Speaker: It just wears tweed.

Speaker: And gets by the name of Giles.

Speaker: And he gets up, picks up his chair and he says, please sit down.

Speaker: We'll help.

Speaker: And you think, oh, my word.

Speaker: So they begin to go through what's been happening and having...

Speaker: the, I say the exposition, but with Cordy, Buffy says, your attacker is an invisible girl.

Speaker: And Xander's like, who is really, really angry at you, which I can't imagine personally.

Speaker: But it takes all kinds, you know.

Speaker: And then Cornelia is like, like the others, she claims that she's never seen this girl before.

Speaker: But then she knows, she's like, is she wearing Laura Ashley?

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: And I must say, Xander is just, he's like, I can't imagine why, you know, she'd be so homicidal about being a...

Speaker: Oh, dear.

Speaker: It's, yeah, it's so good.

Speaker: But it's, you know, you just think, oh, Cordy.

Speaker: And then we get another moment.

Speaker: It's not a flashback, but it's a it's the present Marcy.

Speaker: She's up in her little nest and she's muttering to herself and she has her mind is gone.

Speaker: And, you know, she's very, very bitter about Cordy and her friend's

Speaker: She's like, well, you didn't see me coming and you've got to learn.

Speaker: And she picks up a bag and rope and then we're back in the library.

Speaker: So we're back and forth again.

Speaker: So we're at this point.

Speaker: Yep.

Speaker: And there's a lot of it now.

Speaker: And, oh, okay.

Speaker: I don't really remember most of the rest of the scene, but this angle, the camera angle through the spindles of the library balcony, looking at Giles, cleaning his glasses.

Speaker: Yes.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: And the view of everyone behind him is perfectly framed.

Speaker: It's great.

Speaker: And he's like, well, according to...

Speaker: to what you told us about the attack on Miss Miller.

Speaker: We have two messages from Marcy.

Speaker: Look and listen.

Speaker: And it's a message that we don't understand.

Speaker: I love how Giles kicks Xander's feet off the table.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: So if Buffy did that, he wouldn't even, he wouldn't think at all.

Speaker: He'd let her do that.

Speaker: It's because it's Xander.

Speaker: It's like, no, it's still not okay to do that.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: Don't think I haven't noticed.

Speaker: And Buffy's saying, well, you know, she's clearly, it's the whole May Queen thing and she's going to do something about it.

Speaker: And Willow agrees.

Speaker: She's like, yeah, you know, is it, is it worth cancelling?

Speaker: Maybe, you know, the coronation tonight.

Speaker: And, and Cordy's like, no, no,

Speaker: Yeah, like, why would we do that?

Speaker: Yeah, nothing is going to stop me from going to the bronze tonight.

Speaker: And Xander's... I'm sorry, Xander's... His line here is... Can we just revel in your fabulous lack of priorities?

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: And Buffy's... Buffy nearly cracks up.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: And she's taken great delight in this.

Speaker: It's like, well, okay, if you still want to go ahead with it, then I have a much better idea.

Speaker: How about we carry on the May Queen activities as normal and we use Cordelia as bait.

Speaker: Yeah, so...

Speaker: I like how, because Buffy actually said, well, Cordy has a point, which was Cordy pointing out, well, if you cancel, Marcy's won, and we can't stop life from happening.

Speaker: And Buffy's like, oh, yeah, Cordy's got a point.

Speaker: And Cordy's like, see, me and Buffy are best friends now.

Speaker: But yeah, Buffy's avoidance of Cordelia is still very much there.

Speaker: She's happy to help.

Speaker: She wants to make sure everyone's safe, but

Speaker: She's not Cordy's friend.

Speaker: And they decide that Cordy's going to be bait to lure invisible Marcy out.

Speaker: And in the meantime, Xander, Willow and Giles need to begin their research anew, as Giles says, because unless they find a cure for Marcy's invisibility, Buffy is a sitting duck.

Speaker: But Marcy's there already.

Speaker: She's listening, watching, breathing deeply.

Speaker: yeah and um they all head off so buffy cordy head off to go and try on cordy's dress

Speaker: We have this lovely moment, actually.

Speaker: It's a really nice scene between Cordy and Buffy where Buffy explains, you know, again, because bearing in mind as well, you know, Cordy's not involved with any of the supernatural side.

Speaker: And she's like, are you saying she's invisible because she's so unpopular?

Speaker: And Buffy's like, yeah.

Speaker: And Cordy shows sympathy.

Speaker: She says, you know, I'm really sorry for her.

Speaker: How awful to feel that lonely.

Speaker: And Buffy sort of misjudges Cordy here.

Speaker: She's like, yeah, well, did you read about it in a book?

Speaker: Because, you know, there's no way that you'd feel it.

Speaker: And Cordy's like, well, of course I feel lonely.

Speaker: Because I'm so cute and popular, I don't feel lonely.

Speaker: I'm surrounded by people and I can be completely alone.

Speaker: And I know when I'm talking, people don't, they're just so busy to agree.

Speaker: They don't actually hear what I'm saying.

Speaker: Yeah, I'm not even sure if they really like me.

Speaker: And yeah, it just, Buffy sees her in a new light.

Speaker: It's like, oh, there is other stuff going on here.

Speaker: Yeah, but she's still not ready to befriend Cordy or forgive past transgressions.

Speaker: She sort of says, well, why do you insist on being the way you are?

Speaker: And Cordy's like, well, I'd rather be, it's better being alone around people than being alone around.

Speaker: and entirely alone.

Speaker: And that hits Buffy, I think.

Speaker: She senses that and she understands that.

Speaker: She's like, yeah, okay, I get it.

Speaker: So again, we see another type of loneliness.

Speaker: And yeah, it's a really great episode for feeling for each character.

Speaker: Even the not so nice ones or the ones who are meant to be, Marcy's.

Speaker: meant to be the bad person in this and um you know you can't help but feel sorry for her and um

Speaker: Meanwhile, back at the library, Vision in Tweed with his, oh, God.

Speaker: Yeah, he's stood just looking like that.

Speaker: Xander and Willow are there as well.

Speaker: Xander's looking really, really handsome, I must say.

Speaker: I think his hair in this is just really nice.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: And they hear flute playing.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: So they're on the case and.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: They decide to investigate.

Speaker: I like this bit actually where, you know, they're trying to figure out what to do.

Speaker: And Giles suggests that, you know, they talk to her and try reasoning with her.

Speaker: And then he goes, or simply grab her.

Speaker: Or possibly grab her.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: Yeah, I do like this moment where they sort of go, right, come on, let's stick together.

Speaker: Because, of course, they didn't stick together in the last episode and that went horribly wrong.

Speaker: So they stick together.

Speaker: And meanwhile, we then head back to the mop closet, as Cordy calls it, and says, if you ever tell anyone that I got changed in a mop closet, I will kill you.

Speaker: Which is...

Speaker: Buffy actually repeats a line that Giles said to Xander.

Speaker: She says, your secret dies with me.

Speaker: And yeah, so Buffy waits outside while Cordy gets changed.

Speaker: And we then see the others descend down into the basement.

Speaker: Yeah, there's a lot of cuts at this point.

Speaker: Yeah, I mean, it doesn't feel jarring at all, but Xander hears or listens out.

Speaker: So, of course, they're following the music and he opens this door into a control room.

Speaker: and they're really slowly walking around and they're like, Marcy, we just want to talk to you and we're sorry we ignored you and all the rest of it.

Speaker: And Xander walks over and discovers a tape recorder.

Speaker: It's like a proper one.

Speaker: Those were the days.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: Loved my tape recorder.

Speaker: And Xander's line, can you say gulped?

Speaker: And at that moment, the door closes and then this hissing, this hissing noise begins.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: And Giles hears it.

Speaker: And because he's an adult, he knows what gas sounds like.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: And then we're back outside the mop closet.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: And that conversation is continuing.

Speaker: But this time it's Buffy opening up to Cordelia.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: So she's obviously had a bit of a think, isn't she?

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: So she tells her that something was missing for her back in L.A., even though she was pretty popular at her old school.

Speaker: So they're both learning more about each other and realizing that they actually have more in common than they realized.

Speaker: And we said this, didn't we?

Speaker: We were like, it's because they're so similar.

Speaker: They don't get on.

Speaker: They clash.

Speaker: But yeah, I mean, Cordy's typical.

Speaker: Cordy, again, she's not necessarily being overly supportive of Buffy.

Speaker: She's interrupting Buffy when Buffy's trying to open up to her.

Speaker: So active listening again.

Speaker: It's not quite working out for Cordy.

Speaker: And I think there's a moment where...

Speaker: Buffy actually says, you know, can we have a little less talk from you?

Speaker: And then we hear this noise, this scramble on the other side of the door.

Speaker: And Buffy unlocks the, well, she tries to get in and she can't unlock the door.

Speaker: So she punches through the door, unlocks it.

Speaker: And then we see these legs being pulled up into the ceiling.

Speaker: It's so funny, these little Dorothy feet kick as she gets pulled up.

Speaker: And then we're back in the basement and Giles looks at the, this is basically, this is like, so anything to do with a boiler at home, I have no concept of.

Speaker: So I'm just like to my husband, can we put the boiler on or the heating?

Speaker: Can we turn it on?

Speaker: And he has to do something.

Speaker: And this is such a man thing to say.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: So, oh, the pilot lights out.

Speaker: I don't know what that is.

Speaker: I have no concept of what that is.

Speaker: And but yeah, so the switch has been snapped off.

Speaker: And now the room is filling up with gas.

Speaker: And Giles is just doing.

Speaker: I say this is such a guy thing to do.

Speaker: They have no concept, do they?

Speaker: Unless you're a plumber.

Speaker: You don't really know what you're doing with a boiler.

Speaker: And he's just literally turning any knob that he can.

Speaker: And he's like, oh, we're looking for this.

Speaker: We're looking for this.

Speaker: And Xander's like, this one?

Speaker: And it's been snapped off.

Speaker: Yeah, so Xander and Willow, they then panic.

Speaker: They're like, we need to get out of here.

Speaker: Xander goes to pick up a shovel and smash the door down.

Speaker: Giles then explains, if you do that, a spark will light up the whole place and everything will blow up.

Speaker: Don't do that.

Speaker: So, yeah, I don't know what it is in this episode, but this scene where we go back and forth, I just, yeah, I've got the hearts for Giles on this one.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: Again, it's just a newfound love again.

Speaker: In the meantime, Buffy's jumped into the ceiling after Cordelia and she's found her in Marcy's nest.

Speaker: She's unconscious and Buffy gets kicked by Marcy and she falls through the ceiling and

Speaker: And she gets knocked out.

Speaker: She's coming to.

Speaker: And in the meantime, the doctor's bag drops down.

Speaker: A syringe comes out, being held by Marcy, so it looks invisible.

Speaker: It looks like it's floating.

Speaker: And it goes into Buffy's neck.

Speaker: And yeah, she's blackout.

Speaker: And she's knocked unconscious.

Speaker: And rewakes in the bronze with Cordelia.

Speaker: And they're both tied to chairs.

Speaker: They are.

Speaker: And Cordelia is saying that her face is numb.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: Oh dear.

Speaker: Local anaesthetic.

Speaker: So they're trying to figure out what is going on, what on earth is happening, what is she doing?

Speaker: Buffy's, I don't know, you know, she's trying to get a measure of where they are, what's happening.

Speaker: And in front of them on the curtains in glitter is the final lesson or the final message, which is learn.

Speaker: So Marcy's going to teach them a lesson now.

Speaker: In the meantime, this is it.

Speaker: I do not know why.

Speaker: But I'm just like, okay.

Speaker: With his bare hand, he's turned off the lever for the gas.

Speaker: And it ripped his hand apart.

Speaker: And yeah, sorry.

Speaker: No apology necessary on this show.

Speaker: And yeah, so Giles is, you know, hanky over his mouth and he's like, that should give us a few minutes.

Speaker: It's like, okay, but if we don't get out of this room soon and Willow's like, why is Marcy doing this?

Speaker: And

Speaker: And Giles said, it's the loneliness, the constant exile.

Speaker: She's gone mad.

Speaker: And Xander's, you think?

Speaker: And then we're back at the bronze again.

Speaker: So Marcy is talking to them now and she's saying stuff about, you know, they all want what Cordelia has to be noticed.

Speaker: And yeah, things get very...

Speaker: Very frightening.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: I mean, she's wheeled out all the instruments, the surgical instruments.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: And reveals it.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: It's fucking brutal, isn't it, really?

Speaker: It's a bit fucked up.

Speaker: And she says to Cordelia, I'm going to give you a face and no one will ever forget.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: It's like, no.

Speaker: Oh, my word.

Speaker: I mean, that's really Hannibal Lecter.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: I mean, Hannibal Lecter went to the next level.

Speaker: But yeah, it's bad.

Speaker: And then we're back in the... This scene just gets better.

Speaker: Giles is undressing now.

Speaker: And he's wrapping his tweed.

Speaker: The vision, he's wrapping his tweed jacket onto the metal bar and trying to break the door down to escape.

Speaker: Willow is nearly conked out, bless her.

Speaker: Xander's helping.

Speaker: And then we're back.

Speaker: So it's a lot of back and forth.

Speaker: And we get the flying.

Speaker: I was just about to say the flying spatula.

Speaker: It's not the spatula.

Speaker: Sorry.

Speaker: It's the flying scalpel.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: And Marcy has, she's chosen her weapon.

Speaker: And they're trying to talk her out of it.

Speaker: You know, Buffy's saying, this is wrong.

Speaker: You can't do this.

Speaker: And Marcy thumps Buffy hard.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: and um she even says to buffy i thought that you might have understood but you're just like them cordy's she's got to the point now where she's she's crying she's she's pleading please don't do this please don't and you know uh marcy's like no that's it you're gonna have a face that no one will ever forget children are going to dream about you and

Speaker: the coronation tonight, the site of the May Queen, everyone will take to their graves.

Speaker: So it's really, really nasty.

Speaker: But Buffy's doing her thing.

Speaker: She's working it out.

Speaker: She's trying to get the ropes around her wrist.

Speaker: She's working on her bindings.

Speaker: And she knows where Marcy is because of the scalpel.

Speaker: But before that happens, we go back to the basement.

Speaker: Everybody's getting weaker.

Speaker: They are, yeah.

Speaker: And Xander passes out.

Speaker: Xander passes out, Willow's passed out.

Speaker: And yeah, I find it ironic that the only one who hasn't at this point is Giles.

Speaker: Who regularly gets knocked out.

Speaker: Because even Buffy gets knocked out in this.

Speaker: And yeah, so Giles is the only one.

Speaker: You wonder if that was deliberate, like, ah, let's give him a pass for this episode.

Speaker: Yeah, I think so.

Speaker: Yeah, and then we're back to the surgical table in the bronze where Marcy is basically saying, oh, yeah, okay, of course, you know how it is.

Speaker: You know how I feel.

Speaker: And she sort of reiterates that.

Speaker: previous words that Cordy has said to her and you know you think gosh she's been stalking Cordy for a long time you know this has been building up and she's like yeah because she feels so alone because they don't really know you and all the rest of it you think oh gosh she was there

Speaker: when Cordy and Buffy were speaking.

Speaker: But all of this is giving Buffy time and Buffy's working on her wrist bindings.

Speaker: But it's not enough.

Speaker: Marcy does lose it a bit and she slashes Cordy's face.

Speaker: But it's enough to distract Marcy.

Speaker: Buffy is able to break free, kicks the table, which flies into Marcy.

Speaker: And the curtain that's behind on the stage, you can see that move.

Speaker: So Buffy really quickly tries to get Cordy free, but Marcy kicks into her.

Speaker: So, yeah, it's a really good, it must have been really difficult to do, to choreograph.

Speaker: Because, of course, no one is actually there.

Speaker: It's quite a difficult thing to, you know, to play out, I suppose.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: And then back in the basement, Giles is hitting at the door.

Speaker: Oh, with his bloody hand.

Speaker: Yes.

Speaker: With his little handkerchief wrapped around.

Speaker: And then luckily, Angel opens it and comes to their rescue, drags them out.

Speaker: He's great in this episode.

Speaker: He is.

Speaker: It's like, at last.

Speaker: You think, oh, that's what he's there for.

Speaker: Contribution.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: There he is.

Speaker: And very usefully, he's also brought Giles the Codex.

Speaker: Yes.

Speaker: That's what he was doing.

Speaker: He was bringing the book to him and he smelled the gas on his way in through the basement.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: Giles is like, he gets stood up and then he says, no, let's get the others out.

Speaker: So he gets, he picks up Xander and an angel does the very chivalrous thing, picking Willow up, getting them out, closing the door.

Speaker: And Xander even says, he's like, hi, what do you want?

Speaker: He doesn't thank him.

Speaker: And yeah, so he said, I've bought you the codex, which Giles is, you know, straight in there.

Speaker: He's like, let me have a look.

Speaker: And he said, I smoke the gas.

Speaker: But Giles, we need to shut it off.

Speaker: You know, the whole building will go up.

Speaker: And I love what Angel says here.

Speaker: And he's like, I'll get it.

Speaker: It's not like I need the oxygen.

Speaker: It's like, oh, he's a handy guy to have around.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: Yeah, I do like him in this.

Speaker: I really like him.

Speaker: He's got rid of his shirt.

Speaker: So we're back to the bronze.

Speaker: This is a great scene, I think.

Speaker: Well, ironically, I'm terrible at describing fight scenes, but the gist of it is that Buffy is struggling to throw punches in the right place.

Speaker: And as a result, we get this lovely slow motion scene

Speaker: And you can see that she's trying to use, she's trying to hone, as Giles would say.

Speaker: Yes, hone, hone.

Speaker: You must hone.

Speaker: He would be very proud.

Speaker: Yes.

Speaker: She's trying to use all of her senses to locate Marcy.

Speaker: Yes.

Speaker: It's a lovely way that they filmed it.

Speaker: Yeah, really clever with the light.

Speaker: Yeah, like the dust particles.

Speaker: Yeah, it's awesome.

Speaker: And she calls Marcy a thundering loony.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: So her next punch finds her.

Speaker: She takes her out and she kicks her into the curtain.

Speaker: And a proper slayer hit.

Speaker: You know, bearing in mind, this is just a normal girl.

Speaker: She just happens to be invisible.

Speaker: And she hits this red curtain.

Speaker: It comes down over her.

Speaker: So you can see the shape of Marcy.

Speaker: And then Buffy, just for good measure, knocks her out.

Speaker: And just as that happens, these two black suited guys come in with guns.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: Introduce themselves as Agent Doyle and Agent whatever.

Speaker: And Buffy's like, why weren't you here 10 minutes ago when, you know, she was playing surgeon?

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: Yeah, they're like, we'll take it from here.

Speaker: Yeah, a quick explanation.

Speaker: They say they can rehabilitate her.

Speaker: And Buffy says, this has happened at other schools, hasn't it?

Speaker: And they say, you know, it's in her best interest to just forget that this ever happened.

Speaker: Yeah, yeah.

Speaker: It's an interesting idea.

Speaker: Yeah, but I don't think it's that well executed compared to how things have gone up to now.

Speaker: It just feels a little bit rushed.

Speaker: Yeah, it's a bit shoddy, isn't it?

Speaker: Like, oh, we'll just take the girl from here.

Speaker: And there's so much backstory potential there because it's very hazy.

Speaker: And it's not because they want to keep it that way.

Speaker: It's just the fact you can tell they're like, yeah, we want to just get back to the story.

Speaker: We don't really want to go too far into that idea that the government is aware and thinking that is literally an entire new storyline.

Speaker: So interestingly, this episode inspired an episode in Smallville

Speaker: which deals with an invisible boy, I think it is.

Speaker: But yeah, so it's interesting.

Speaker: I mean, of course, they do take the idea that the authorities are aware of the supernatural and they play with that later on.

Speaker: But yeah, I mean, it's interesting that they hinted it here.

Speaker: And I understand the idea was that potentially to have Marcy return.

Speaker: Mm-hmm.

Speaker: which is why the end is as it is.

Speaker: But before we get to the end scene, we've got the Scoobies heading down the corridor.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: And Giles telling Buffy that it was the janitor who shut the valve off and that's how they escaped.

Speaker: Yes.

Speaker: Yeah, he interjects, doesn't he?

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: Which is interesting because we were saying, oh, why did he not say to Angel, stay away from her?

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: But we know this now because Angel has said, I can't be around her.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: So Giles decides, he thinks it's better if Buffy doesn't know that Angel was here.

Speaker: Yeah, because she, of course, will go, oh, he's trying to help us all.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: And she'll make things more difficult.

Speaker: That's it.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: So it's an interesting, it's such a blink and you miss it sort of moment.

Speaker: But really quite an, well, an important one.

Speaker: And just before they get into the library, Cordy comes over to thank them.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: And you're kind of expecting a punchline of some sort, but there isn't one.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: Even Xander.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: He's like, that's funny.

Speaker: She looks like Cordelia.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: And so they obviously go, oh, you know, her intentions are good.

Speaker: So they ask her, does she want to go and have lunch with them?

Speaker: Yeah, poor Willow.

Speaker: But then Mitch turns up and asks if she's really hanging with these losers.

Speaker: And of course, she has to keep up appearances.

Speaker: So we're back to square one.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: She's like, oh no, I was having them with their fashion problems and social leper colony.

Speaker: So, yeah, it's great.

Speaker: You know, they all walk back into the library, which is, of course, empty and devoid of any other students.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: And then this final scene where you have the two agents walking an invisible girl into an empty room apart from one visible person at the front.

Speaker: And she sits down.

Speaker: And I think they're like, OK, class, let's get started.

Speaker: Page 100 and something.

Speaker: And they all open the books.

Speaker: And they've told her, you should fit right in here.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: Because, of course, everybody else is invisible too.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: So, and it's... And she opens the book, yeah.

Speaker: Yeah, it's assassination and infiltration.

Speaker: You think, ah, okay, so she's going to be an agent now.

Speaker: Yeah, she's like, cool.

Speaker: Yeah, it's good for her.

Speaker: She's found her calling at last.

Speaker: She has.

Speaker: She has.

Speaker: I really enjoyed this episode.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: And I like that message at the end.

Speaker: It kind of, you wonder how many, you know, lonely, isolated kids thought maybe I could be an agent when I grow up.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: Yeah, use your powers for good.

Speaker: Yeah, that's very much the message, I think.

Speaker: Yeah, very much so.

Speaker: So I don't have a huge number of tidbits for this one.

Speaker: I sort of shared them as we went.

Speaker: But the only other thing is that there's a very direct influence from The Invisible Man, which is a novel by...

Speaker: HG Wells which they don't I say they don't mention it's about an invisible girl the only difference being is that it's an experiment gone wrong with that storyline whereas this is obviously caused by loneliness yeah well her invisibility

Speaker: What is the kill count?

Speaker: There isn't one.

Speaker: No one dies.

Speaker: Marcy is rehabilitated.

Speaker: She is.

Speaker: Which is good.

Speaker: It is.

Speaker: Your favourite outfit?

Speaker: It's definitely the sunglasses and the blue neck scarf that Buffy wears.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: It's like if I saw anybody wearing that, I would be like, wow.

Speaker: Wow.

Speaker: I would just stop in my tracks and go, that is a great look.

Speaker: Yeah, you look amazing.

Speaker: I think Buffy, all of her outfits in this episode...

Speaker: are just gorgeous but I love the really it's the first scene that that we come across Buffy um and then later on she wears or she adds her red velvet jacket so it's yeah it's the the white top the pink skirt the boots lovely she looks really I love that um it's very very Buffy um

Speaker: But then also, you know, she wears the leather trousers and leather jacket when she's out.

Speaker: Well, she says hunting when she's patrolling the school at night.

Speaker: She looks amazing in that.

Speaker: I have to say, Giles just looks gorgeous.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: in this episode Vision in Tweed and so does Angel Xander's hair it's on form later on I think he's I think when they they go over to Buffy when she's wearing her nice sunglasses and things

Speaker: And yeah, he just looks, he looks really, really handsome in this.

Speaker: What's your favourite scene?

Speaker: Even though it's broken up, you know, in between the cuts, it's definitely the heart to heart between Cordelia and Buffy.

Speaker: It was really well done because as you mentioned, Buffy doesn't come round straight away.

Speaker: She doesn't excuse the behaviour, but she has a better understanding of why.

Speaker: And yeah.

Speaker: Yeah, I just think it was really well done.

Speaker: Just the realisation that they're not all that different.

Speaker: Yes.

Speaker: In a lot of ways.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: And everyone feels lonely.

Speaker: Yes.

Speaker: Just in different ways.

Speaker: Mm hmm.

Speaker: I think mine is when they're in the library.

Speaker: I mean, it starts with just the four of them, the core four.

Speaker: And then when Cordy comes in and she's like, it's all about me, me, me, me.

Speaker: And when she sits down and they go through that, it's great.

Speaker: I really, I love that.

Speaker: And it is the moment because, of course, Cordy does become more and more involved in

Speaker: And this is the episode that marks that.

Speaker: So it's taken a very long time.

Speaker: It's near the end of the season for Cordy to come round.

Speaker: But that is the first time that we get them all together.

Speaker: And I really like that scene for that.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: And it kind of...

Speaker: the way they built up to it, it gives you time to, to just get to know Cordelia.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: So you formed a certain impression of her and what she's like.

Speaker: And then this sort of breaks through it a little bit and you go, Oh yeah.

Speaker: There's more to her because she could have easily just been the, you know, the standard school bully just there for some comic relief and never developed any further.

Speaker: But I like that they didn't do that.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: They, they bring her in, into the fold and,

Speaker: by making her a victim which is really interesting I think because it's unexpected as well.

Speaker: And on that note actually I would say that she is my favourite character.

Speaker: Okay.

Speaker: Purely because I like how she develops and how much we learn about her and she's got some cracking lines as well.

Speaker: Yes.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: Now, I think my favourite character, I actually think it's Angel.

Speaker: Hmm.

Speaker: I really like him in it.

Speaker: I think he's proactive.

Speaker: He doesn't show up that often, but he's useful in this.

Speaker: And he saves the day.

Speaker: And he looks fabulous doing it as well.

Speaker: But yeah, I think he's redeemed his uselessness to me.

Speaker: You get to the point where you think, what's he doing here?

Speaker: Is he just the romantic person?

Speaker: you know distraction yeah but I think it worked really well so yeah I really liked him in this and what's your best line I had a couple of contenders so my honourable mention is Willow responding nausea yeah but my favourite is Giles once again I teeter at the precipice of the generation gap brilliant yeah it's just it's the way he says it's just it's a brilliant line

Speaker: He could have said it any number of other ways, but it's brilliant.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: Xander does it for me in this episode.

Speaker: He has so many.

Speaker: They just crack me up.

Speaker: I love the one that he says to Cordy.

Speaker: And he just says, can we just revel in your fabulous lack of priorities?

Speaker: It's just...

Speaker: It's hilarious.

Speaker: But my favourite is maybe it was a vampire bat.

Speaker: I just... Yeah, it's great.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: Every time.

Speaker: I know it's coming and I still giggle at it.

Speaker: And I think Nicholas Brendan's delivery, he really... Yeah, I think he was really good.

Speaker: You can see why they cast him.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: He did a fantastic job.

Speaker: Is that why you're always cleaning your glasses?

Speaker: So you don't have to see what we're doing?

Speaker: hell no one.

Speaker: Giles's glasses.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: He's only done it once, but it's in the scene where Willow suggests that they keep away from the bronze.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: You just, you can't not notice it.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: And he's just, oh, I mean, it's not like you don't notice this with glasses, but when he has them off, his eyes are just stunning.

Speaker: Oh my God.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: incredible i think it's because he's so intent on cleaning them as well um and it's such a i it i mean it is such a natural thing to do but i i don't think i've ever in like as intently cleaned my glasses as he does no and it's like oh gosh golly golly yeah

Speaker: And he'll just like stare into the camera when he takes them off.

Speaker: You've done that deliberately.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: I swear, one of these times you're going to wake up in a coma.

Speaker: Wake up in a... Oh, never mind.

Speaker: Knockouts.

Speaker: So Giles does not get knocked out.

Speaker: No.

Speaker: But everyone else does.

Speaker: We take him a moment to celebrate that.

Speaker: Yes.

Speaker: That's a win for Giles.

Speaker: It is.

Speaker: So even Buffy gets knocked out, but Giles does not.

Speaker: So yeah, that's got to have been a decision by the production.

Speaker: I'm convinced it was, has to be.

Speaker: Definitely.

Speaker: Because if you did it like every episode, it'd be like, okay, come on now, this is getting a bit much.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: As it is, it just keeps you in a place where you can laugh at it without saying this is absolutely ridiculous.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: You don't really, you don't notice it.

Speaker: Yeah, you don't know when it's going to happen.

Speaker: No.

Speaker: You're anticipating going, oh, it didn't happen there.

Speaker: Maybe next time.

Speaker: It's great.

Speaker: And well, it is a really enjoyable episode, actually.

Speaker: It is.

Speaker: I really do enjoy it.

Speaker: And I forgot, I think,

Speaker: As we said before, it gets a little overshadowed.

Speaker: I forgot how good it was, how enjoyable.

Speaker: So, yeah, I really enjoyed that.

Speaker: I'm really looking forward to watching the last episode, Prophecy Girl.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: But at the same time, I'm really sorry.

Speaker: that we've got here yeah i mean this is quicker than we'll ever get there again let's face it yeah so of course we've only we've only had to do 12 episodes to complete season one so yeah i'll be i'll be sad to see this season over yeah i love this season

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: And you just know, like, while some dark stuff has happened, when you know some of the stuff that's to come in the later seasons, especially, it makes this feel a bit more innocent, if that doesn't sound totally ridiculous.

Speaker: Yes.

Speaker: And you know you'll never kind of get that back.

Speaker: Yeah, there's not so much baggage with season one.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: which makes sense two maybe but yeah definitely season one and and I think it should be like that you know and yeah um and I think people say oh it hasn't aged very well um but I think that's that's what makes it the season that it is that's what makes it yeah a good season and I mean some elements haven't but there's some absolutely fabulous episodes

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: Oh, there are.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: It's just genius the way they, you know, introduce these themes and all the parallels that happen.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: It's brilliant.

Speaker: It's great.

Speaker: And we will be reviewing the season as a whole in a special episode.

Speaker: So which will follow the,

Speaker: the season finale.

Speaker: We were umming and ahhing about discussing the entire season jointly with discussing Prophecy Girl, but we decided Prophecy Girl is a longer episode anyway.

Speaker: There's a lot there to go through.

Speaker: We will be doing an extra season finale or season run through, which will come out after

Speaker: the Prophecy Girl episode and we will have a special guest joining us.

Speaker: We will, yes.

Speaker: We've got a couple of guests lined up which is exciting but yeah this will be our first guest joining us for the roundup and her name will be familiar to you because she has done a lot of great artwork throughout this season.

Speaker: Yeah, every episode, Ghost Rabbit or Meredith has been creating a unique watercolour based off a scene.

Speaker: So much of that, she's actually picked herself.

Speaker: She's wanted to, you know, we've left her to sort of set the scene for herself.

Speaker: So we'll look forward to chatting to her about her artwork, the specific artwork that she's done for this podcast, her love for Buffy.

Speaker: And we'll be reviewing the first season and the first season of the podcast as well.

Speaker: So we'll be going through what our favorite scenes were.

Speaker: We're going to try and pick some top scenes that we can highlight again.

Speaker: The best lines.

Speaker: Outfits, characters, and we will try to settle on what the best episode of season one was.

Speaker: So do be sure to catch that.

Speaker: That will be after the next episode, which is a prophecy girl.

Speaker: So in the meantime, we'd love to hear your thoughts on out of mind, out of sight.

Speaker: So do feel free to share away.

Speaker: Get in touch on Twitter and Instagram and TikTok.

Speaker: Previously on Buffy.

Speaker: So thanks for listening and we'll see you next time.

Speaker: Next time on Previously on Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

Speaker: But can we just pull out of this for a moment?

Speaker: How did Giles get Angels' number?

Speaker: I mean, they obviously had a little... They had a really good chat.

Speaker: Oh yeah.

Speaker: Last episode.

Speaker: They're best buddies now.

Speaker: Jenny, you know, she's like, well, where's the hell mouth gonna open?

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: And if she hadn't said that, you know, you need her to sort of plant these ideas in people's heads.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: You need an outsider to look in and she's very objective about it.

Speaker: She really propelled the story forwards.

Speaker: Thanks for listening to previously on Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

Speaker: You can follow us on X, Instagram or TikTok.
