Importance of Health in Pottery Development

00:00:14
Speaker
What is up, Shaping Nation? This is Nick Torres here. And on this episode of Shaping Your Pottery, I'm going to be talking about why your health is the most important thing to help you find your voice and evolve it even further.

Common Pottery Pains and Movement Needs

00:00:27
Speaker
Now,
00:00:28
Speaker
If you have been making pottery for a while, you probably are getting some maybe aches and stuff in your in your body and your back and your shoulders into your wrist, whatever it is, because you are doing repetitive motions while you're still like sitting still for long periods of time, right? And I'm sure
00:00:49
Speaker
A lot of you probably have inks and pains because just from doing it for so long or like maybe you're a little bit older and age and you just have a lot of life experience with you. Right. And I know even though I'm young, after I'm get done like with whatever I'm making, my back is usually kind of hurting afterwards.

Personal Tips for Pottery Health

00:01:10
Speaker
And so here's some things that three things that I do after and before and just whatever to help me just kind of stay a little bit healthy, keep my body a little bit more refreshed. So the first thing that I do is that I try to move very often more often than not. I try to move at least a couple of times an hour
00:01:35
Speaker
And I just try to move. I try to walk around. I'll go get some water. And I just try to move. The reason why...
00:01:42
Speaker
It's important to move is because if we get, if we stay still and we're in the hunched over all day, that's when our pain is going to probably be the worst. So we have to make time to move around, move around so that we are keeping healthy, whether you are doing a full workout with some weights or just your body weight, or maybe you're just going for a walk for like 10 minutes, whatever it is.
00:02:08
Speaker
Get out and move. This is just my opinion. I'm not a doctor. I'm not anything with that can help you with really with your body. These are just some things that I do and I think they can help you. So number one is to get out and move. Number two is I like to take frequent breaks. And I know I say that it's important to get into the studio daily. And that is super true, especially right when you're first learning to get into the studio daily.
00:02:37
Speaker
But you can also take frequent breaks when you are making time in the pottery, in your studio, whatever it is you're doing. So let's say, for example, you work from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. And during that time, normally you just will bust it out and you just work from 12 to 3 and you don't take any breaks, right? But I'm here to tell you that if you take frequent breaks, your body will be a little bit more rejuvenated
00:03:07
Speaker
during those few hours. So let's say you start at 12. And you can work for 34 to 5 minutes and set a timer for these times.
00:03:19
Speaker
and then take a break. Go, you know, sit on the couch, go do something else other than pottery, and then for maybe like 10 minutes, whatever it is, 10 minutes, and then come back so that you are being more fresh. So you're not just doing the same thing over and over again. This will keep your mind a little bit fresh. And also during those breaks, you'd also go out and move, which is involved with tip number one. You can go out and move, go out for a walk, go get some water, you know, go get something to eat.
00:03:48
Speaker
But during that time, you're just taking a little break just from pottery so that you are when you come back, you were fresh. Another way you could take a break is to simply just not make pottery for a day or two or a week. And you don't even touch pottery so that.
00:04:04
Speaker
When you really come back, you are rejuvenated and you are ready

Importance of Stretching in Pottery

00:04:07
Speaker
to go. You are ready to start making pottery again and you're ready to start making your ideas come to life. So those are the two things. Number one is to just get out and move and try to move daily, move as much as you can. Second tip is to take breaks. Take breaks frequently, whether you are, if you have a three hour window of studio time, take breaks during those every like 45 minutes or so.
00:04:32
Speaker
Finally, the third tip that I think is my favorite one on this list is that I will stretch after I am making pottery. I will focus on a few things. So the things that normally hurt for me the most are my back, my shoulders, and then my growing in my wrists.
00:04:52
Speaker
So those are the things that I focus on after I am done making pottery, especially my back. If you only do one thing, make it so that you are stretching your back and decompressing

Health Tips Recap and Episode Conclusion

00:05:03
Speaker
it. Something that I like to do is, and it's super easy, is I have a pull-up bar at my house, and I'll just hang there for a minute or two, whatever. I'll just hang there, and that's it. And that decompressing my back, and it feels really good on my back, on my lower back, and that is something that I like to do.
00:05:22
Speaker
So if you just do one thing out of really all these tips, it's just to really decompress your back and stretch after you have finished making pottery, after you have finished your session with pottery.
00:05:37
Speaker
because this is gonna help you keep your back and your shoulders and your joints from feeling pain. Because I'm sure after being hunched a while, you're gonna feel some pain. You're gonna feel some like definitely some aches, some joints, joint pains, because you've been sitting still for so long. So that's what I like to do after I am done creating pottery. So the three tips are, number one is to get out and move frequently.
00:06:07
Speaker
whether you are Working out or doing just doing a quick little walk for five ten minutes. Whatever it is. Just get out and move The second thing is just take frequent breaks where you are Working for 45 minutes and then you're doing ten minutes of a break or you could do a whole break for like a week or more Just take frequent breaks
00:06:28
Speaker
The third tip, the third and final tip that I do is that I like to stretch especially my back after I have just finished making anything. I hope this brought you some value and I'll see you guys next time.
