RICK JAMES: Yeah, really good. We had a busy week so far. Yeah, spraying a lot of God's juice.

RICK JAMES: Yeah, around the clock.
The SnowJobs Podcast: You must be getting nonstop rail cars if you're able to keep up with this.
RICK JAMES: Well, we finally got some last night, so we've been blowing it out. So as fast we can. So.

RICK JAMES: How you? What's going on over there? East coast.
The SnowJobs Podcast: Same shit, man. Working, trying to get the trying to get all the exit strategy done, get all the ah the stuff I got to do to get out and retire, get that all done. And so far, so good. And we're going to keep doing this. I got about another week of that stuff. And if everything's clear, then drop the paper and out the door I go.
RICK JAMES: When's the end date?

RICK JAMES: but I don't know. i That's a lot of inventory to carry.

RICK JAMES: Yeah. Well, I'm trying, but you're one who ordered these big runs of these other t-shirts that I have tons of.

RICK JAMES: Not enough. Not enough.

The SnowJobs Podcast: um I am because we've been talking about this for four years, telling young guys that this is a path that they should really look into. And I'm excited to hear somebody actually listened and is doing what we we've been preaching for the last four years. So we're talking to two young men today that ah apparently listened or at least heard about it somewhere and got the idea. We got Noah Gordon and Andrew Splett. They are from Quick Clear Shovelers, and they're out of the Minnesota area, but they're now already after one year, they're branching out to a ton of different markets.
The SnowJobs Podcast: They're company that just strictly supplies shovelers to commercial companies to handle their sidewalk work. uh it's uh it's a great idea we've been saying it that's what young guys should do and you know stop trying to get into commercial snow and jump in with both feet it's a great idea i can't wait to hear more about it jeremy knows these guys well and uh that's what we're gonna do today we're gonna hear all about these guys and their plans for the future and how it went last year and uh we'll uh we'll get into it with the boys but before we do that as always we gotta to hear from team top gun we're gonna do a quick week review when we come back

The SnowJobs Podcast: So you guys, you guys are, you guys were the talk of storm day. I heard from four or five different guys. ah You got to talk to these shovel guys, man. They're young, but they got a great concept there.
The SnowJobs Podcast: I'm like, i've been saying this. I've been saying this for a couple of years now. When's somebody going to listen? You guys apparently listened. So tell us about what you're doing with, with quick clear shovelers. I want to hear all about this.
Noah Gordon: Yeah, it um it started last year and and we recognize a hole in the market to where contractors have a really hard time finding reliable shovelers as well as enough of them.

Noah Gordon: um And we were able to bridge the gap between shovelers and contractors being our experience in the snow removal industry and then also being kids and being around kids, um knowing how they think, how they communicate um and what works for them. And and We crushed it last winter.
Noah Gordon: think we left a good track record and we're growing like weeds right now trying to connect with contractors and shovelers.
The SnowJobs Podcast: That's awesome. ah Good for you guys. Very good for you guys. So you guys have background in snow, right?
RICK JAMES: Thank you.
Andrew Splett: Yeah.
The SnowJobs Podcast: So tell us about your ah your background before you started this.
Andrew Splett: Yep, we worked.
Andrew Splett: Yeah, so we were, what, sophomores or juniors in high school, and we started with LADC. um We then, you know, went to college, moved on from that. I applied for Jeremy for one year.
The SnowJobs Podcast: and Okay. Okay.
Andrew Splett: And then, yeah, and then, We decided we wanted to start our own thing. And yeah, we started knocking on doors and met up with a contractor. He wanted us to come shovel for him. And we're like, well, that's not not really the point.
Andrew Splett: We want to start our own thing. we're like, we can find you shovelers. And ever since then, it's snowballed. And now we're going to be in, what, 16 different markets?
The SnowJobs Podcast: In one year.
Noah Gordon: Yep.
Noah Gordon: No.
Andrew Splett: Yeah, this will be year two.
The SnowJobs Podcast: Wow. oh
RICK JAMES: You're to 16 different markets. Where are the markets at? If I, you guys want to share with that or.
Noah Gordon: Yeah, anywhere from Rapid City, South Dakota to ann Arbor, Michigan, Ohio, and Cleveland with with the guys at UD. um any Any college town with 70,000-plus people in it to where it's not a ghost town when they leave.
Noah Gordon: um that That's our hot spot. That's our market.
The SnowJobs Podcast: I should have copyrighted that idea. I said that, Jeremy, right? I said every college town with snow, somebody should be getting these kids for beer money to do shoveling and stuff.
RICK JAMES: you did
The SnowJobs Podcast: Damn it. That's awesome, guys. I'm i'm so happy for you guys. That's one year and you're going to be in 16 different markets?
Andrew Splett: your comfort?
Noah Gordon: Yeah.

RICK JAMES: What, how did you guys, how did you guys think you could expand like that?
The SnowJobs Podcast: Go ahead, Jay.
RICK JAMES: i mean, what, what is your process, I guess?
Andrew Splett: is your
Noah Gordon: Yeah.
Andrew Splett: how one
Noah Gordon: Yeah. so we, we go out and we hire a manager that goes to that school. Their only job is to find people that are willing to shovel. Andrew's job is contractor relations, right?
Noah Gordon: Cold call them, go to events like storm day, meet up with people.
Andrew Splett: slide says
Noah Gordon: um i run the operations and and it's a three man weave right there throughout every market. Yeah.
The SnowJobs Podcast: That's awesome. That's really good. That's really, really good. And I mean, there's a need. There's such a need for it. What now?
RICK JAMES: Yes.
The SnowJobs Podcast: what What made you guys go? you You started out plowing and then decided you wanted to do your own thing in snow. What made you go this route versus the normal route that everybody seems to take, either start doing driveways or get into light commercial?
Noah Gordon: um I think we thought this was easier.
The SnowJobs Podcast: I agree.
Noah Gordon: um um Frankly, frankly, we last year, we had about 40 accounts and we were trying to manage the shovelers.
The SnowJobs Podcast: like Preaching to the choir.
RICK JAMES: yeah ah
Noah Gordon: And we just said, man, this is too hard. Why don't we focus on the niche that we have? um There's we're helping instead of trying to sell the contractors so much in this industry.
Andrew Splett: Thank you.
The SnowJobs Podcast: Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm.
Noah Gordon: It's like, who's screwing over who, right? Who, who's taking advantage of who. And, and we feel like, where our prices are at, that we're helping contractors.
RICK JAMES: Yeah.
Noah Gordon: We're helping our our boys get beer money, pay for rent. um it's We're marrying all the two together. and And we've been offered to have a couple sites subcontracted and we turned them down politely.
Noah Gordon: And and we're just honing in on this, trying to make a business out of this.
The SnowJobs Podcast: Oh, this is definitely a business. If you're reliable and you can deliver what the hell you say you're going to deliver time after time, it's definitely a business, boys.
RICK JAMES: Yeah.
The SnowJobs Podcast: That's awesome.
Andrew Splett: Well, that's when I, ah after doing those 40 accounts one night, I was like, I never want to touch a shovel again. so think it took 28 hours. and yeah
The SnowJobs Podcast: Oh, wow.
RICK JAMES: Wow.
The SnowJobs Podcast: So now it's good.
RICK JAMES: So do you what's your process of hiring your shovelers? They got to shovel or broom something, shovel something? What do you guys do? You got test their backs or what's what's the what's the process for you guys getting guys same as every other snow guy? You got a heartbeat?
Noah Gordon: yeahp Yeah, two feet in the heartbeat, we call it. Yeah. it it young
Andrew Splett: Yeah, we hit him in the back. Oh, ahead. Yeah,
The SnowJobs Podcast: That's great. Oh, i God.
Andrew Splett: we hit him in the back with a stick, and if they don't break then, then they're good to go for a shovel.
RICK JAMES: Thank you.
The SnowJobs Podcast: there there you go give them a shot and see if they keep if they recover uh that's awesome so now you guys you guys don't have to have any equipment you don't like d i assume you're you're getting these guys in these markets contractors are calling you and saying yeah i want five guys you don't have to supply them with vehicles or anything like that you just give them the address and say get there and do it
Noah Gordon: Yeah, we we, like, so last year for the Wolfpack at Glacier, um we'd get a text from from the Glacier guys.
RICK JAMES: Yep.
Noah Gordon: We would put together a truck of four. We'd say, meet at their shop. They're going to give you shovels, a map, and they're going send you on your way. Um, and, and that's how it worked. And, and this year we're going to do the same thing and have a couple options to where, um, if you want to use our equipment, then we'll upcharge there and, and, um, kind of see what contractors want, get creative with them.
Noah Gordon: But, um, the, the easiest way for us was just, just make them go to your shop and then you figure it out from there. And, and I can go to bed while you're up at 2am cleaning the, cleaning out the sidewalks.
RICK JAMES: Yeah. Well, what we did with the, when we used them, what we did, we had a, we always have GPS trackers and stuff.
Andrew Splett: at all.
RICK JAMES: So we, we put a GPS tracker in like in the lunchbox and they had to bring that with them. So, and then we know we can charge when they're on site, you know, for shovelers.
The SnowJobs Podcast: me
RICK JAMES: So, so we just have to know how many shovelers are there.
The SnowJobs Podcast: Gotcha.
RICK JAMES: And then went in you can kind of keep tabs of them too, if you want to. And that, but that's, that's what we did. It worked out really well.
The SnowJobs Podcast: That's cool.
RICK JAMES: So, These guys are great. The crews are all good. So it was definitely good. it's it's a niche very It's a niche market, that's for sure.
RICK JAMES: You have to.
The SnowJobs Podcast: The whole market is niche. Then you have this just super niche.
RICK JAMES: I know, but the shovelers, everybody needs shovelers. They're just hard to come by.
The SnowJobs Podcast: Yeah, shovelers and reliable shovelers, ones that show up and are willing to ah work hard, work fast, and get it done.
RICK JAMES: Yeah.
The SnowJobs Podcast: Now, you guys charge an hourly or is it per her job?
Noah Gordon: Yeah, hourly per guy. um Just keep it easy.
The SnowJobs Podcast: Okay.
Noah Gordon: and And I think where we find our most value is if you need 20 shovelers to go out tonight and you're dealing with your operators and all the other headaches that come with dispatch and crews, you text one guy, you text us, and we'll figure that out for you, um which ends up saving a lot of time and a lot of headache.
The SnowJobs Podcast: I gotcha. So you charge an hourly per guy. Now, if I'm a contractor and I want to make you guys basically, I'm like, okay, yeah, I need these guys, but I don't want to pay them for six hours at one site.
RICK JAMES: Thank you.
The SnowJobs Podcast: I want to make their job quicker. If I supply you with snowblowers or sidewalk machines, you guys use those or you strictly shoveling?
Noah Gordon: we We have used those last year and and it it turns into an insurance liability for the contractor.
The SnowJobs Podcast: Yes, it does. Mm-hmm.
Noah Gordon: So we've worked out like a renting deal. um Your hourly wage would go up, but really it's the same. We're just renting it back from you just to equate that.
The SnowJobs Podcast: Interesting.
Noah Gordon: But we've got the insurance, frankly, more than I care to pay for insurance. And you guys know that.
The SnowJobs Podcast: Everybody.
Noah Gordon: Um, yeah, so it, it um, yeah, it's a, it's a liability to use your actual equipment, but we figured out ways around that.
The SnowJobs Podcast: Yep.
RICK JAMES: Yeah.
The SnowJobs Podcast: Nice. Very cool. Very cool. I'm, I'm impressed. This is, uh, I'm telling you, this was like the, this is what the dream should be. You know, it's cause the scaling possibilities are endless.
The SnowJobs Podcast: Honestly, if you can keep finding reliable people and you guys have that, you know, we'll never fail mentality in your company and the guys that are working for you buy into that, the possibilities are absolutely endless.
RICK JAMES: Yeah.
The SnowJobs Podcast: You could literally branch this to every snow market that has a major university. It's phenomenal. Good for you guys.
RICK JAMES: So do you know anybody these other markets or you guys just kind of just setting a casting a net out there?
Andrew Splett: And that that's the
Andrew Splett: point.
RICK JAMES: What's what what's what are you guys doing?
Noah Gordon: Yeah, we've we've spent a lot of time vetting our managers, um making sure that they're money motivated. Again, like you've been there, they're not just going to tell us they're going to do something and then they go off to school and and they're done.
Noah Gordon: So we spent a lot of time vetting our managers. They're compensated very well in terms of how they produce, which we found to help. And and when you listen to Mark Bradley talk at at Storm Field Days, that that's what it's about, right? Making them want to work for you.
The SnowJobs Podcast: sure
Noah Gordon: um And we found a lot of value in that.
RICK JAMES: Mm-hmm.
The SnowJobs Podcast: That's phenomenal. So how do you guys keep track if you're if you're in all these markets? How do you keep track of who's doing what completion times, how many hours? Like you have software that you guys use or how do you do it?
Noah Gordon: Yeah, um it's pretty automated within the software we use. Our managers are in charge of keeping tabs on the hourly when they show up to the shop, when they leave.
The SnowJobs Podcast: Okay.
Noah Gordon: um Yeah, it's I mean, all it is is timekeeping once they show up to your shop.
The SnowJobs Podcast: Okay. Very cool. So you guys delegate that down to the individual manager of the area and then he reports back to you with the with all the stuff. Cool.
The SnowJobs Podcast: Very cool.
RICK JAMES: So all you guys using apps are just writing down or what, what how do you guys keep track? is it Is it a software thing or?
Andrew Splett: ah Yeah, so no I mean, it's, ah what is it, Excel, right, we're using?
The SnowJobs Podcast: and Okay.
Andrew Splett: So you just put their time in.
Noah Gordon: Yeah, super complex.
Andrew Splett: i did it I did it all last year. It's really, it's not hard at all. So, um yeah, we're trying to keep it as simple as we can for the managers and everybody involved.
RICK JAMES: Yep.
RICK JAMES: Yep.
Andrew Splett: So..
RICK JAMES: Yep. Good.

RICK JAMES: So the guy's got to come to your shop or wherever your meeting spot is, pretty much check in, right? And then they go out and do the work. And then before they go home, they got to come back and check out so you guys know where they were and you know what the charge, I would assume.
RICK JAMES: Okay.
Noah Gordon: Yeah. and And I know like with Josh at Valley Green, he has these binders. They're keeping track of every site they're at and how long they're there. And then when I send my invoice to Josh, we compare hours and we can confirm that what we got is the same as what he had.

RICK JAMES: Nice.
The SnowJobs Podcast: So last year was your first year. how many How many guys did you have working out there last year?
Andrew Splett: All right, I actually have this pulled up here. um
The SnowJobs Podcast: Awesome.
Andrew Splett: So last year we had 120 different shovelers work for us and then we had 2,800 man hours.
The SnowJobs Podcast: Wow, you had 120 You were able to find 120 shovelers?
Andrew Splett: Yep, it's just like a pyramid scheme.
RICK JAMES: Oh, Fargo more is good.
RICK JAMES: Fargo more is like got four colleges in it. So.

The SnowJobs Podcast: at the end of the day, the finish work is what's really, you know, do you guys, um how does it work with the, with the quality? How do you do quality control where you make sure that your guys understand they're pulling every little bit of snow away from the building. They're, they're shoveling out a couple feet from the curb line, you know, that kind of stuff. You do any kind of training, you have any videos or anything you show these guys, or it's just, you know, you, you rely on the manager to break them in.
Noah Gordon: Yeah, we, um and I know Josh did a good job briefing these guys at at his shop. um um And we send, we got a ah paragraph where we send them the address and who to call if something's wrong and then what they need to do.
RICK JAMES: Thank you.
Noah Gordon: That's our SOPs, our operating procedures for... when you got a new shoveler on and, and when you talk about retention and how to make these guys want to come back and shovel, we found that when they're riding with their buddies, you know, you're not out there working with Dale who's 58 and he's smoking a heater in the car at 2 AM.
Noah Gordon: And then, and then now you got to get out and shovel and he's yelling at you. But if you're with three of your buddies, you know, you're going to, you're going to enjoy working. You're going want to come back out and work.

The SnowJobs Podcast: mean, that's how our crew is. The the the ninjas, as I refer to them, they're all, it's 12 friends. They're all the same. Like I brought one guy on and then I just told him after I figured out that he, he was a definite worker.

Andrew Splett: Yeah, we've done salt. um you know As long as our shovels are okay doing that, because it's not fun loading your truck up with a bunch of salt and then you get to wash it out. As long as they're okay with it, they can go salt.

The SnowJobs Podcast: I was wondering from a contractor standpoint, like I'm trying to think how I would do that if I was, if I was the guy hiring you guys, if I would want to apply my own salt for liability reasons, like that's, you know, if you guys are doing my sidewalks, how does that, do you guys have that in your contract with the contractor of who assumes liability for the sidewalks?
Noah Gordon: and And we're kind of crafting up but as we go the contracts and how we're going to apply them to obviously all these new contractors we're working with.

Noah Gordon: um and And we have slip and fall. We have, again, the whole nine yards.

Noah Gordon: And and we've we've maybe we're maybe going implement like ah like a $3 an hour more price tag on that, not even for us, but to incentivize our guys to go out and salt and and do that and get their cars dirty just just when those events do come up.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Gotcha. You have any plans in the future? If if you have, if you have, uh, say markets that blow up and you got three, four or five contractors in the same market, you have any plans in the future to have your own vehicles?
Noah Gordon: Yeah, that that that is the plan. Maybe two years in Minneapolis, we've got a ton of connections here. I mean, this is what I would call the hotbed. um A lot of really consistent snowfall.
Noah Gordon: A lot of contractors and ah and a lot of need for what we have going on.

Do they scout the site that they get hired for? you know, if they have a contractor signs you guys up and says, hey, I need you guys for four sites. Does the manager take the guys before the snow and and scout it out, ah you know, and let the guys see it or not really?
Noah Gordon: Not really. It's such a revolving door with who's actually showing up and shoveling.

Noah Gordon: Because if you've got a two-day storm, you've got four guys that were out, um and you want them to work again on on the next day, but two of them got class, they're going find two more buddies. It's just a revolving door of who can we get in to shovel.
Noah Gordon: um and And from a contractor's standpoint, it's people need to be reminded, not taught. So and the more they normally they just tell them, the easier it is.

But we have a very good, strong chunk, 18 to 24. If you got guys out there that are thinking that they want to join up with you guys, is there a minimum amount of hours that you guys are going have them work on a call-out?
Andrew Splett: um No, it's all, it's in, um no, no, we don't really do that right now.

And now you can worry about other things on your business other than a bunch of dummies out there with plastic shovels.

Noah Gordon: Yeah, it's an interesting concept even when you think about who shoveled for us last year to where half of those guys are done and they won't be back. But in no other labor pool, do they come back in like they do in college too.

Noah Gordon: Yeah, i think I think it would be as more of like a regional manager role, and then they would continue to backfill underneath them because you have to be at that school to be able to find all the people.

You got to be at the bar on a Saturday saying, come shovel for me. um You have to be there, and and and that's where – the difference between contractors and and our managers is the contractors aren't there, you know, and and they can't be bugging them And there's a, there's something to be said about being a kid and being hired by a kid as opposed to, you know, being 35 and begging someone to shovel for you, which is, I think the gap we fill. Cause we, we know the snow industry and and we know kids and we know beer.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Okay, perfect. 21. what you you did this last year, you got started. What lessons did you learn that you immediately, you know, made changes on?
Noah Gordon: You want to go ahead, Andrew?
Andrew Splett: Yes. Yeah. So a lot of really, you got really dumb it down, right? Really. i can't even tell you how many texts I got of Where do I go? What time do I show up?
Andrew Splett: um Do I do this? Do I do that? So you really got to break down. So we put together some operating procedures for our managers so they're not, hopefully, not blowing our phones up, right? So they can deal with their respective market and we can focus on continuing having good relations and growing the business.

Noah Gordon: I think um learning how to run a business was and incredibly valuable last year. and And again, like we talked about doing it the right way, which is tough. um I'd like to just take my cash and give cash and not have to worry about anything else as we all would. So
