Salvation and the Baptism of the Holy Spirit

S2 E9 · Ministry Moment

12 Plays3 months ago

In this episode of Ministry Moment, we continue a powerful and foundational teaching on the Holy Spirit, focusing on the clear biblical distinction between salvation and the baptism of the Holy Spirit.

Using Scripture from Acts, Corinthians, and Peter, we walk through multiple examples that show the baptism of the Holy Spirit as a separate, ongoing experience available to every believer—not just the early church. You’ll hear how being filled with the Holy Spirit brings boldness, direction, spiritual power, and deeper intimacy with God, and why Scripture repeatedly urges believers to “be filled” again and again.

This episode also addresses common misconceptions about praying in tongues, the role of the Holy Spirit in guiding daily life, and why spiritual growth depends on fellowship with the Spirit—not comparison, fear, or past failures. If you’re seeking clarity, direction, or a deeper walk with God, this message will challenge and encourage you to pursue the fullness of what God has promised.

Stay connected as we continue this series and explore the gifts of the Spirit, praying in tongues, and how the Holy Spirit actively works in the life of every believer today.

Speaker
Yeah.

Faith and Reminders

00:00:47
Speaker
So I wanted to share this scripture really quick before we get in to our message today. This is in 2 Peter. And he says, therefore, I will always remind you about these things, even though you already know them and are standing firm in the truth you have been taught.
00:01:06
Speaker
And it is only right that I should keep on reminding you as long as I live. So in other words, he said, I'm going to keep reminding you about the same things over and over again.
00:01:20
Speaker
It's so good sometimes to go over and not just say, hey, I've heard this message before, but he said, hey, sometimes we need reminded of things. And so I just wanted to read that scripture because we have a teaching that we've done before that we wanted to pull out because it's good to be reminded of the things in the Word of God. You know, the Word of God doesn't return void. no you know, it, it,
00:01:45
Speaker
always accomplish what God desires to see manifest in the life of ah the hearers, people who are listening to the message. Yeah, and you can read the same Scripture 50 different times. And the 50th time, two years later, God drops a revelation into your heart.

Revisiting Past Teachings

00:02:04
Speaker
So, we want to just pull this teaching up and just share it with you. We believe it's going to be a blessing to you.
00:02:12
Speaker
...the life of Jesus, you know, and in His ministry. The Bible says when He was baptized, okay, and the Spirit of God spoke from heaven, okay, that was another experience.
00:02:26
Speaker
ah you know, as salvation. and But you know, the Holy Spirit came upon Jesus when when God, by the same time God spoke, when He was baptized, where after he out He was baptized, the God spoke from heaven. And the Bible says the Spirit came on Him.
00:02:43
Speaker
And guess what happened to Jesus?

Salvation vs. Holy Spirit

00:02:45
Speaker
He was taken into wilderness. right to well to confront Satan because he has received power.
00:02:57
Speaker
So the same thing happened to us when we, there's a difference between our experience as salvation and another experience when we are filled with the Holy Spirit. yeah So, you know, what a joy. No, what a joy to be filled with the Holy Spirit. yeah How many times the scripture says, be filled with the Holy Spirit. It's not just one experience. It's many, you know i know, I don't want to preach another message. So wait a second, you just said that. Yes.
00:03:30
Speaker
You just said that, it made me excited about this scripture. Okay. 2 Corinthians, um let's go to ah verse ah chapter one verse twenty two second corinthians one twenty two
00:03:46
Speaker
All right. And it says, it er and he has identified us as his own by placing the Holy Spirit in our hearts as the first installment, first installment that guarantees everyone, everything he has promised us. So, you you know, you were just talking about that. And so I wanted to mention that.

Promise of the Holy Spirit

00:04:10
Speaker
the Holy Spirit, it says it's a first installment yeah of what has been promised to us. And you know, this wasn't even in my notes to go into, because I want to go through the difference, really focusing on salvation and the baptism of the holy Holy Spirit. But to your point of people being able to be filled, be filled with the Holy Spirit, when the apostles were praying in and the place was shaken, it says they were filled with the Holy Ghost. Now we know they were already filled with the Holy Ghost because they you know You can see that in the Bible. They were already filled with the Holy Ghost. They were tongue talkers already, and yet when they prayed and the place was shaken, it says again, they were filled with the Holy Ghost. And so,
00:04:52
Speaker
Anyway, that's a complete side note and it's a whole other teaching like you said. And we want to get into... You know, if you go back to the scripture in Book of Acts, there's a different, or maybe in the kingdom of God, you know, I'm going to invite, you know, we um we have another program coming up. yeah I'm getting excited for this program. And ah that we have a lot of programs.
00:05:14
Speaker
So, you know the you know, the Bible says, there's ah there's a many There's a different ranking, you know, or places in the realm of the Spirit.
00:05:25
Speaker
All right? So God doesn't want to more the more The more you pray in the Spirit, the more God takes you a higher. That's what He's telling us, you know, yeah be filled with the Holy Spirit.
00:05:37
Speaker
There's a different levels. Okay, in the spiritual realm. So the more

Levels of Spiritual Experiences

00:05:43
Speaker
you have, do you spend more time with the Holy Spirit, will He will take you higher.
00:05:48
Speaker
You know what I'm saying? For example, apostle Apostle John, you know, God says, come up higher. It is by the Spirit of God that He saw, the vision that He saw. It is the Spirit of God that revealed, told Him.
00:06:01
Speaker
Yeah. things of the future. yeah So, okay, I don't want to cut you off, but it's good to say. No, that was so good, yeah. I'm excited for this. We may be on this topic for another 25 minutes. I know, I'm looking at my notes. I'm like, we've got to get through these. All right, because I want to get into this. So, I'm going to start with just the basics of the baptism of the Holy Spirit right at the beginning of books of the book of Acts, um Acts 1, verse 5. Now, I just i want to in case you're new to this,
00:06:30
Speaker
share the background here. So Jesus has already died on the cross. He's rose from the dead. He is talking to his disciples. And he told them not to leave Jerusalem until he sends the gift he promised, the Holy Spirit. Verse five, so Acts 1, 5, he says, John baptized with water, but in just a few days, you will be baptized with the Holy

Baptism of the Holy Spirit

00:06:56
Speaker
Spirit. Now, the reason I wanted to mention this and that it's important is the disciples were already saved.
00:07:03
Speaker
They already knew Jesus was the Messiah. They knew he had died and he had been raised from the dead. which we know is necessary for salvation, right? And he says, okay, you have that now, wait for the baptism of the Holy Spirit, which happens in Acts chapter two.
00:07:19
Speaker
We're not gonna go there right now, because we will touch on that in just a minute. But I wanna share this second and ah a second example of that, because sometimes people will say, oh, that was just for the disciples.
00:07:30
Speaker
Not everyone else does it. The baptism and the Holy Spirit. we're going to go through lots of examples, but I want to share one other one that I just thought was really good when it's talking about specifically about the baptism of the Holy Spirit and
00:07:47
Speaker
I just lost the scripture. um So this, but it is in, it's what, I know it's in Acts chapter 10, because that's where it talks about Cornelius. Oh no, but that's not the one I was going to. I was going to,

Cornelius’ Household Experience

00:08:00
Speaker
um
00:08:09
Speaker
Well, anyways, I'm going to tell you what it says and then I'll find the scripture and get it and give it to you. But it's when Peter is he's sharing what had happened right when he preached the gospel to Cornelius as he's preaching the gospel. This is in Acts chapter 10. The Holy Spirit filled falls and they're all filled with Holy Spirit. and began speaking in tongues. And so he's sharing this encounter with the leaders of the church. And he said, when this happened, i remembered that Jesus said that he would baptize people in the Holy Spirit. right So he recognized this separate experience called the baptism of the Holy Spirit. And so um yeah the Bible talks about that separate baptism of the Holy Spirit. And we can see that separate experience throughout the book of Acts. So I'm going to go through several different scriptures. We're going to talk about some things, some mis-teachings, and then also show you that different experience that happens. So Acts 2, verse 4, I mentioned that's when the Holy Spirit comes on the dis everyone in the upper room. There's 120 people actually in the upper room. It wasn't just um the disciples and they all pray in the Holy Spirit.
00:09:26
Speaker
And they, and when they be get filled with the Holy Spirit, not only do they pray in tongues. And I think this is important is that they do pray in tongues and that causes everyone to come around. But Peter has a boldness now upon him that he didn't have before. Now, keep in mind,
00:09:44
Speaker
Just a short while ago, yeah he was denying Jesus and running away scared. Now, he felt bad about it, right? But he wasn't, he was not being bold. He wasn't facing death with boldness or, right? But once he received the Holy Spirit, he receives that boldness. And then he begins sharing, this is what was prophesied by Joel. This was going to happen. Now, this is an important piece because sometimes people say, oh, this is this was just for the apostles in the early church because it was needed to get going.
00:10:17
Speaker
Well, that's not true. Acts 2 verse 38 tells us, and let's just flip there really quick. Acts 2 38. It says, it says
00:10:29
Speaker
ah Peter replied, each of you must repent of your sins and turn to God and be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins.
00:10:40
Speaker
Then you will receive the Holy Spirit. Next verse, verse 39. This promise is to you, to your children and to those far away.
00:10:56
Speaker
All, didn't say some, talking about the Holy Spirit here, all. who have been called by the Lord our God. Now, He is he's sharing this. Go back and read the all of Acts 2. He's sharing this in response to them hearing them speak in tongues. And He's like, no, they're not drunk as you think. It's too early for them to be drunk. yeah This is the promise of the Bible. And guess what? This is for you and your children's children and everyone who's ever going to be called by everyone who's been called by God, everyone.
00:11:24
Speaker
It's for everyone. All right, next. So now we're gonna jump on to Acts chapter eight

Acts 8 Interpretation

00:11:32
Speaker
and and we're gonna start in verse 12. So let's go to 8, 12. So this this is a good example again of the difference between salvation and being filled with the Holy Ghost and it being two separate experiences. So Acts chapter eight, and I'm gonna start in verse 12.
00:11:53
Speaker
to show you that they accepted the Jesus. So, but now the people believed Philip's message of good news concerning the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ. As a result, many men and women were baptized. Now, let me ask you a question.
00:12:10
Speaker
Does that scripture tell clearly tell us that they had received salvation and been baptized in the name of Jesus? Yes or no? Yes. Yes, it does. All right. So they weren't filled with Holy Spirit at the moment of salvation.
00:12:23
Speaker
Let's go fast forward into ah
00:12:29
Speaker
the chapter. Let me get up to where it is. All right. So then um I'm going to start reading in verse 15. So, the apostles heard, in verse 14 it tells us the apostles heard about them accepting the word. So now Peter and John come and it says, as soon as they arrived, they prayed for these new believers to receive the Holy Spirit.
00:12:53
Speaker
The Holy Spirit had not yet come upon any of them for they had only been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. Pause again. They had been saved. They'd been baptized in the name of Jesus, but they did not have the Holy Spirit yet. The scripture clearly says that. So now verse 17 says, then Peter and John laid their hands upon these believers and they received the Holy Spirit.
00:13:21
Speaker
So now I'm going to pause and just recap that. Philip goes, he preaches the gospel. He gets people baptized in the name of Jesus. The disciples are excited about what's going on. So they send Peter and John down to help. Peter and John get there and they're like, hey, no one's been filled with the Holy Spirit yet. So we're gonna lay our hands on them and pray for them to be filled with the Holy Spirit. Clearly two separate experiences. There was salvation. Remember last week we talked about how salvation is building a brand new house, right? The old man passed away, you become a new man.
00:13:55
Speaker
It's building that new house. And then when you're filled with the Holy Spirit, it's when the Holy Spirit comes to live in that new house, overflowing rivers of living water coming out of that new house that has been built. So, all right, were you gonna say something before I go to the next? No, you did. All right. So we touched on this briefly, but I am gonna flip there, Acts chapter 10.
00:14:19
Speaker
um This is Cornelius and his house. Now, this, I just wanted to point out one thing in this, Acts 10, verse 44.
00:14:32
Speaker
and
00:14:35
Speaker
Actually, verse 45. All right. So he's preaching the word that the Spirit of God falls on them and they begin to speak in tongue. The Holy Spirit fell on all who were listening. Verse 44. And then verse 45, it says, the Jewish believers who came with Peter were amazed that the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out on the Gentiles too. Verse 46. Verse 46.
00:15:00
Speaker
for they heard them speaking in other tongues and praising God." So, how did they know that they had received the gift of the Holy Spirit?
00:15:12
Speaker
What did it say? How did they know? Because they heard them speak in tongues. They knew that the evidence of them being filled with the Holy Spirit was that they spoke in tongues. Right? yeah Absolutely.
00:15:25
Speaker
That's... go ahead amen no no okay go i don't want to okay i don't want to interrupt you well i got i don't want to take over so it's clearly what the bible says there all right so now let's go to um acts 19 in um verse 5 and then we're going to go actually wait hold that thought let's go to acts 9 first because i want to talk about paul for a second before we talk about what paul did let's go to Acts 9. And I'm just gonna set this story up a little bit for you in case you're not familiar with it. So Paul is persecuting the church. you know We know he consented to Stephen's death. He was holding coats while they stoned him. So he is now on a mission to imprison Christians.
00:16:12
Speaker
And so he's on his way um to imprison some more Christians. And Jesus appears to him and says, Why are you coming against

Saul’s Conversion

00:16:22
Speaker
me? Why are you fighting against me? Right. And Paul's like, who are you, Lord?
00:16:26
Speaker
And he says, I'm Jesus. And I i just love that because people he was coming against he was coming against Christians. yeah And Jesus was like, if you're coming against them, that's you're coming against me personally. Right. man So, he Paul becomes blinded blinded, and then God comes to Ananias and says, Ananias, you need to go lay your hands. Do you know, before we get into that, ah something that observed in that story, you know, that event that took place, the Bible says,
00:17:02
Speaker
Let's go read that story. Okay. And when when God spoke to him, okay, the Bible says a voice spoke to him in the Hebrew language, okay?
00:17:13
Speaker
And Apostle Paul saw, you know, he had his servant with him. The Bible says they heard a sound, but they don't understand the meaning.
00:17:27
Speaker
yeah hey The Holy Spirit is the master communicator. yeah You know what I'm saying? was excited when i you know when they experienced, they heard a voice.
00:17:39
Speaker
This guy, they know how to speak Hebrew. hebrew They heard voice. the voice and spoke in Hebrew, but they heard a sound, a sound.
00:17:50
Speaker
But but they they have no meaning. They don't understand what was said to him. Okay. so So, the reason why I'm bringing this to your attention, are you hungry to know the voice of the Holy Spirit? Is it, do you have any question? Do you want to know the will of the Father for your life?
00:18:11
Speaker
The Holy Spirit is, the master communicator. He can talk to you in in French, in Japanese, OK? He can speak you in Chinese or in Spanish, you know?
00:18:27
Speaker
And any language. Y francais. Yeah, in French. He know how to speak French. It seems to me when we go to heaven, we're going to have our second language going to be French. ah That's me talking. So so so what i'm what i'm what I'm asking you, don't be discouraged, okay?
00:18:46
Speaker
Don't be very hard on yourself. ah What it's going to take you is your your seriousness to ask and go into prayer and ask Him, recognize that the Holy Spirit is with you.
00:19:08
Speaker
You know, we were talking about our salvation. How do you know that you are saved? How do you know? Who told you that, you know, that if you died, that you're going to go to heaven?
00:19:23
Speaker
How do you know that, you know, all of that? How do we know? It is the Holy Spirit that reveals, gives us that assurance. Yeah, absolutely. It's the Holy Spirit. So I'm speaking to some of you.
00:19:36
Speaker
If you have any question in your mind and you need an answer, it is your is it it gonna take your seriousness how much do you want this and to get into that place into your prayer closet and require and ask him to speak to you you know i have said this we i can never we can never over emphasize this And many people are not succeeding.
00:20:05
Speaker
Many people are not victorious. Even believers. I'm not talking about people who don't know Jesus. Those who have accepted the cross is because they need direction.
00:20:17
Speaker
And it is the Holy Spirit who gives us the direction. So I'm going to encourage you. Get into that prayer closet.
00:20:28
Speaker
Ask him a question. and have a piece a piece of paper and pen next to you. He's going to talk to you. When He speaks, just take your time and write it down on that piece of paper.
00:20:43
Speaker
don't don't Don't say that you're going to remember everything. right know When God spoke to Moses, you know, ah we we'll give you so many examples from the Scriptures. Moses, he He wrote it down of His fingers.
00:20:55
Speaker
Okay, so i'm gonna I feel like i we need to encourage you to give this your attention. Don't be discouraged. First, someone someone right now, you are comparing yourself with your friends or people around you.

Following the Holy Spirit

00:21:11
Speaker
Stop it.
00:21:13
Speaker
That's a message for you. Don't do that. Don't hurt yourself. This life that we are, you the journey that God gave to, you know, your journey is not a competition. Just take your time.
00:21:26
Speaker
Just require, required, go be hungry to know the voice of the Holy Spirit. He will guide you. Remember Jesus, you know, the mission, Jesus assignment only took place three and a half years.
00:21:43
Speaker
three, but everybody three and a half, whatever sign language is this, three and a half years, and he fulfilled everything that was written about his life.
00:21:57
Speaker
Your life is still in the hands of God. You're in your book. Yours, I'm not sure how. Maybe yours is 25 years. Maybe it's one year. You know what I'm saying? And just what you need to do is to know what God is asking you to do.
00:22:14
Speaker
It's to listen to His voice. I prophesy to you that every destruction around you must be cut off yeah in the name of Jesus. I speak to your mind.
00:22:31
Speaker
that I see the enemy has been using your purse to affect you and to the point that you is you couldn't you couldn't see yourself step into God's best. I break that curse off of your life and I launch you into that glorious path that God has designed for you in the name of Jesus. You will walk on gra a dry ground yeah in the name of Jesus. There's a clear path before you in the name of Jesus and go forth
00:23:06
Speaker
and succeed and live that glorious life that God has given to you freely. yeah And I speak that over you. It's only one. I see many, many of you.
00:23:19
Speaker
And I believe the Holy the Spirit of God is ministering to you. Receive and be His best friend. And everything's going to be all right. Yes.
00:23:29
Speaker
Yes. Wow. Blessed be God. You know, well, we never finish this message. Oh, yeah. I But go ahead. So let me wrap up this part of it. Yeah, okay. Go ahead. All right. So anyway, so then...
00:23:44
Speaker
Ananias goes verse ah in in Acts 9, verse 17, he says, be filled with the Holy Spirit. He lays his hands on him, says, be filled with the Holy Spirit.
00:23:56
Speaker
And we know Paul is filled with Holy Spirit and speaks in tongues. 1 Corinthians 14, 18, Paul says, I thank my God I speak in tongues more than you all. Again, proof that everyone can speak in tongues because that would have been really neat of Paul to say if it wasn't something everyone could do. you know, we didn't have time. I mean, was expecting, but he noticed that people were not doing it.
00:24:20
Speaker
Yeah, well, and I think we didn't have time to get into this time. The difference between every believer can have the gift of praying in tongues, which is you praying to the Father. To the Father, yeah. Jude 20 says that, you know, that we're interceding. Yeah. See, I'm gonna get excited. I'm gonna get excited to start speaking. ahead, start speaking into it. Okay, all right. Let's maybe for sake of time, this is so beautiful. You know, one of the highest way to make the devil mad is to pray

Praying in the Spirit

00:24:56
Speaker
in the spirit. Yeah, and it builds up your faith. Yeah, and the devil get confused. Yes. He doesn't know what to do about you.
00:25:06
Speaker
Yeah. And I love that because it is a direct communication. Even the Bible says your mind does not comprehend what you are telling the Father. Right. It is, a you know, intimacy, ah a fellowship between your spirit, the real you.
00:25:25
Speaker
Well, and Romans tells us we don't know what to pray. pray for. But the Holy Spirit intercedes for us. um And I know we're out of time. wow, for second. I thought had about five more hours. We didn't get to this part, though, because there's a difference between every believer can pray in tongues, which is praying to the Father. That's different than the gift gift of tongues tongues. with the gift of interpretations, which is when God speaks a message through a person and someone else interprets it. we So I can be blessed. You can be blessed, yeah. So I do want to recommend really quickly, um if you want to learn more, because I know we couldn't cover anything. No, we're going to, don't give everything out. yeah You got to keep it, you know, yeah don't give.
00:26:07
Speaker
Don't give them and not get on a book to read. We will continue this series. We're going to continue the series. So if you want to know more about what, you know, this may, Hey, stay connected to be blessed. Oh, wait, I wanted to say one more thing. One more thing. Okay. Just because while we're talking about this, because we'll kind of shift gears next time to get into the next piece. I'm going to Okay. But I just wanted to say, okay, people say to pass away with the apostles, which is not true. And you can see that from the early church. And I won't go through all the names and all the things that spoke about praying in tongues. But even Alexander of Hippo, who lived from
00:26:44
Speaker
354 to 430 AD talked about praying in tongues. You have people clear up through 500 AD where you can see them talking about speaking in tongues in their church. These are people talking about their church and the role of the Holy Spirit in speaking of tongues. I just wanted to say that it is an early church history, church fathers for hundreds of years. You see them mention it. It did not pass away with the... past Not only does the Bible not say that, and we'll get to that, um But the writing their the writing of um their early pastors, you know, for hundreds of years. they yeah Even somebodys have some of our dinner i i mean it was the denomination that we have in place, it started by praying the Holy Ghost, and they have allowed the devil wash their brain. So ah we'll we will get to we'll get back to that subject. yeah And we will

Invitation to Salvation

00:27:31
Speaker
stay in this subject until Jesus returns because
00:27:35
Speaker
you We can't live up we can't even even live our life without the Holy Ghost. That's right. That's the bottom line. So either you like your honor, Holy Spirit is with you. If you don't know Jesus, Holy Spirit is speaking to you. He's the one who's going to help you to recognize that the blood was shed for you and Jesus was raised back to life for your salvation. When you pray this prayer, the Bible says you will spend your eternity with God.
00:28:05
Speaker
In heaven. And you're going to eat angels' cake. That's my own translation. So it is a great pleasure to come to you every week. And we thank God for your life. And I believe, stay connected to be blessed.
00:28:23
Speaker
We believe this message has been a blessing to you. John 3, 16 says, for God so loved the world, and that includes you. The miracle of Jesus's death brought salvation to your doorstep.
00:28:35
Speaker
If you're ready to receive it, let's pray together. Thank you, Heavenly Father, for loving me. Thank you for sending Jesus to die on the cross for my sins. I believe with my heart that God raised him from the dead for my justification, and I confess that Jesus is Lord over my life.
00:28:52
Speaker
I receive righteousness into my spirit. Thank you, Lord, for forgiving my sins. Jesus didn't wait for people to come to him. He went to them. thanks to you, our partners, so do we.
00:29:08
Speaker
You've helped take church beyond four walls and into real lives. If you're not giving monthly yet, join us. Let's keep going where Jesus
