Incorporating Life Events into Pottery

00:00:39
Speaker
What is up, Shaping Nation? This is Nick Torres here. And in this episode of Shaping Your Pottery, I'm going to be talking about adding traumas from your life into your pottery or just events that just kind of didn't really sit too well with you.
00:00:56
Speaker
A lot of the times I talk about adding your own life into your pottery. And I talk about that because a lot of people that I've interviewed, they have done that. They've added their own life, their own way of like how they look at life and what they are drawn to outside of pottery into their own pottery. A lot of people, they either don't know what they like too, too much because they're just so focused on making pottery that they don't necessarily like
00:01:26
Speaker
anything else because they just like making pottery so much or they just simply don't know what they like at all like literally just don't know but you see all of us have had events in our life that just kind of either didn't go right for us or it's a trauma for us or something happened in our life that either it just didn't really happen the way we wanted or something really terrible may be happening

Story of Allison Stumpf: Spirit Animal Mugs

00:01:54
Speaker
I was chatting with Allison Stumpf, I don't know if I said that right, or Ali Anim6314 on Instagram. And she sent me a picture, which was about had 14 mugs on them, each of them with their own unique different animal on them. But one of them had a glass box around it. And all these animals on the mugs, they're pretty much like spirit animals for the people in her life.
00:02:25
Speaker
And the one with a box around it was herself. And she was going on to explain to me that the reason why there's a box around her own mug that she made for herself, her own animal that she made for herself, is because sometimes she feels like she blocks herself off from the ones that she loved the most.
00:02:50
Speaker
And you know, anxieties fill her up. And that's what that box is. It's like a protection to protect her.

Authenticity Through Personal Struggles

00:02:58
Speaker
And when she mentioned that and when she started explaining that to me, I thought that was really an incredible way to discover your own unique voice with your pottery by simply adding in events from your life that maybe didn't go too well or something that you are dealing with mentally, maybe it's anxiety, maybe it's something else that just happened in your life that did not feel right to you or didn't go well for you.
00:03:26
Speaker
And I think that's a really powerful way to really show your own unique voice with your pottery simply by adding in struggles from your life.
00:03:38
Speaker
And I think a lot of people will resonate with that if you start adding in struggles from your life rather than just making all your pottery happy all the time or just something that is always going right.

Embedding Life Lessons into Pottery

00:03:52
Speaker
What if you took the lessons that you learned from the things that you maybe failed from or maybe those anxieties that you have and you turned it into a vase, a mug and you tried to think of it in terms of that way.
00:04:07
Speaker
Because I think the more vulnerable we can get with our pottery, the more our voice actually really starts showing up is adding experiences from your life into your pottery. At the same time, you are telling kind of a story about your life and you're adding it to your pottery. And that's why I think it's really powerful for you to take bad experiences and think in terms of
00:04:31
Speaker
how can I portray this onto my pottery? And maybe I can teach a lesson to someone so that they don't have to deal with what I have been going through. And I think that's really important to start thinking in terms of that way because we don't always have to make pottery that is happy all the time.

Embracing All Experiences to Find Unique Voice

00:04:51
Speaker
We can make pottery that suits our soul simply by adding in lessons from my life and teaching it to others with our pottery.
00:05:00
Speaker
I hope this lesson was, I know thinking about these experiences can be scary to think about.
00:05:08
Speaker
But when you're able to add your experiences from your life, maybe that weren't so great, your pottery, your voice will start showing up in a very natural and unique way.
