Introduction to Pottery Experimentation

00:00:00
Speaker
This is the process of how I experiment new things with pottery. What is up, Shaping Nation? This is Nick Torres here. And on this episode, I'm going to be talking about what I do and what helps me when I am experimenting with something new in pottery.

Mission: Helping Potters Find Their Voice

00:00:18
Speaker
For those that don't know me, it is my mission to help potters like yourself discover your own unique voice and do that through this podcast. So part of finding your own unique voice with your pottery
00:00:29
Speaker
is the ability to experiment new things with Potter. So maybe you have an idea, maybe sometimes an idea flows in your head and you think, oh, that'd be such a great idea. You probably ask yourself the question, how do I actually make that idea come to life? What happens? Well, how do I make the idea come to life? So this is what I do.

Visualizing Pottery Ideas

00:00:53
Speaker
So the first thing that normally happens is that I normally get an idea.
00:00:59
Speaker
It could be an idea from really like the smallest thing to the most extravagant thing. And I normally get an idea. And then once I get that idea, I kind of start just pondering what that would look like in my mind.
00:01:16
Speaker
or I start looking at things, I start thinking, I start being imaginative because that is just kind of how my process is. I don't really draw out too many things unless I need steps that I need to take in order to try to make that come to life. But for the most part, I'm just kind of imagining it in my mind. I could see the steps in my mind. Let's say, for example, right now, I am trying to experiment with where I pretty much put a diorama
00:01:46
Speaker
in a mug but where it's it's shown and it's in the 3d form in the sculptural form and but while still being able to hold a decent amount of liquid or water whatever it is in the mug because i like my mugs to hold a lot
00:02:03
Speaker
And so I've been trying to experiment. So literally in my mind, I've just been going through steps in my mind, and I've just been trying to see it in my

mind. So like, for example, for this what I'm doing, so I had the idea to make it a double wall. And so for that, what I did was I made the small part first, so the inside part first, and then I worked my way outside, and then I had the bottom
00:02:32
Speaker
the space between the small cup and the large cup and I cut that out and then I put my sculptures in there. And that was going through my mind for a long time. But now I tried that idea out and it's working okay but I'm still not completely 100% satisfied. So now the next experiment I did was I did where I just threw one mug and then I just tried placing a flat bottom in the middle of it.

Execution & Problem-Solving Techniques

00:03:01
Speaker
very bad idea but I did it anyways and it's an experiment and that's all this is it's just an experiment when you are experimenting with something new you can't be afraid to try things and that is what I try to implement into my own pottery is that if I have an idea I'm going to try it out and then I have to notice if it's going to work or not so first I start by imagining it and then once I have it kind of imagined in my mind a little bit then I actually do the process itself
00:03:31
Speaker
And if I'm still having trouble with like coming up with like the steps I need to do to make that idea come to life, then I'll draw it out onto paper. It doesn't have to be a good drawing. My drawings are actually pretty crap because I don't really like drawing that much. And so for me, the first thing is always I think about the idea that's coming in my head
00:03:54
Speaker
And then I try to do it. And then if I can't really see progress with that, then I start drawing it out. Then I start doing things like that. And then it's also about only experimenting with one thing at a time.

Measuring Progress & Refinement

00:04:08
Speaker
Because if you are trying to experiment with like 50,000 different things all at once, you're not gonna be able to measure it properly. You're not gonna be able to see what works and what doesn't work. So you have to try to do it with one step at a time. Whatever it is that you are experimenting with, maybe write out a list of ideas that you could try to make this idea come to life. And then to start trying each one and then crossing out each one as you do it.
00:04:37
Speaker
so that that way you're able to measure it and then you're able to see the progress.

Summary of Experimentation Process

00:04:41
Speaker
So that is my kind of process of how I like to experiment with new ideas in pottery and it's pretty much just imagining what it would look like then doing it and then doing one step at a time making small tiny adjustments. Let me know what how you like to experiment with your own pottery.
