Hey everybody, it's Nick Torres here and in this episode of Shaping Your Pottery, I'm going to be talking about being different, daring to be different. Now, I recently just had a really great interview with Jeff Osgood

And one of the key things that he was talking about was when he was trying to find his own voice, one of the questions he would ask was, how can I make my pottery different? How can I be different so that I'm not just making pottery that is just to eat out of so that other people can enjoy it as well? And it's so true. The really big question is, how can I be different?

And if you start asking yourself this question, you're going to start finding out ways to maybe be a little bit more different with your pottery. But how can it be more intentional to be different? And why should we be different with our pottery? Well, the first reason why we should be different with our pottery is that
The Importance of Being Different in Pottery

It makes it easier for people to kind of notice your pottery when you are different compared to everybody else. Jeff is a really good example of this. At first, he was just making pottery like everybody else. He was making bowls. He was making a lot of plates and making bowls and mugs. He was just making pretty much what everybody else was making.

But once he started asking that question, how can I be different? And once he found what he made that was different and started rolling with it, a lot more eyes started coming to him because his craft looked different and it looked really, really good. And the more he started practicing his unique way of making pottery, the more eyes he started attracting, the more relationships he started building.

And that's because he started becoming different compared to every other potter. If you are just the same as every other potter, then what's going to happen is you're going to look like everybody else.

The only way you're going to be able to really sell your pottery is if you have a large following. And it's not that easy to build a large following sometimes on social media. That's why if you are different, if you dare to be different, you're going to get a lot more eyes on you. The second reason why it's really important to be different is that this is where your voice is going to start showing up.

If you aren't different, then how is your voice going to start showing up at all? If you can't do that, then what is the point? You're just copying everything, everybody else, and you aren't looking different. Your voice isn't going to start showing up.
Nick's Journey and Advice on Uniqueness

And this is so crucial to finding your voice. So please don't be scared to be different. Being different is so much better than being with the normal.

I have never been like everybody else. Growing up, when everybody else was running around, I wasn't. I was doing other things. I was reading books. I was learning how to invest my money. I was learning everything. And I was just being different. And I was being myself. And this is being helped me so much.

Even though I'm not where I want yet, I will be because I am being different and I'm making my pottery different when I am making it. I don't want my pottery to look like everybody else's. That's why I want my pottery to be different. So if you take anything from this episode today, it's just dare to be different. Try something new. What can you what are your passions? What are your your likes outside of pottery? And how can you put that into your pottery so that
