In today’s episode Nikki speaks to Ben and Sarah, Founders of Dancing Sands Gin Distillery.
Ben and Sarah started their careers quite traditionally, working their way up the corporate ladder. By most people's standards they had extremely successful careers which enviously took them around the world and even helped them obtain a visa to New Zealand.
However, when their daughter was only 10 weeks old they found themselves purchasing as Gin Distillery in Takaka, Golden Bay without any prior experience.
Fast forward to 4 years later and Dancing Sands is New Zealand’s most awarded distillery and has won many awards across the globe including back-to-back Platinum medals at the consumer led SIP awards in the USA (2018/2019) where it was voted the best barrel aged gin in 2018.
Join us as we discuss, making the big move out of corporate, what gave Ben and Sarah that confidence/kick/fearlessness to turn a dream into a reality and how do you run a business and raise a small family but still keep that work / life balance?

3 Career Takeaways1) “If you don’t make the jump now there is never going to be a good time.” There is always a time NOT to make the jump. And ask yourself what’s the worst that can happen? The answer is probably that things will just go back to the way they were. (5.24)
2) “As a couple it was important that we have a similar mindset.” Sarah discusses the importance of support in the relationship, how they have built boundaries and never forgetting that you are in it together. (9.06)
3) “Our parents have instilled hard work, resilience, and determination into both of us and that sees us through the more challenging phases of running a small business.” We talk about how our parents can determine our work ethic and how that resilience can help when we are doing work when we really don’t want to.” (31.29).
