For those that don't know me, I run this podcast to help potters to find their own unique voice with their pottery and I give them tips along the way to help them do that.

Building Relationships with Fellow Potters

00:00:55
Speaker
So in this episode, I'm going to be talking about my five step process that I have used to help build relationships with other podgers. And what I still kind of do today, this is what I still do often today. So let's get right into it. The first step that you need to do is we are going to be using Instagram for this. You could use other social media for this, but Instagram is the easiest thing to do because you can message, you can comment. It's very easy to do on Instagram.
00:01:21
Speaker
is one you need to find potters on Instagram that have around the same following as you do.
00:01:27
Speaker
If you go right away and you start going into the deep end, you know, these people that have a hundred thousand followers and you try to make relationships with them, it's going to be incredibly, incredibly hard to make those relationships with them and to do anything with them because they have so many followers. They have so many people probably reaching out to them. So we have to start very, very small. Start with people that have around the same following as you, maybe anywhere from like
00:01:55
Speaker
400 around 400 to like maybe like 600 followers around that range so like if let's say if you have 500 followers if they have around thousand or a thousand two hundred reach out to them

Finding and Engaging with Similar Potters

00:02:11
Speaker
and try to build that relationship. It's gonna be a lot easier that way compared to trying to do somebody else that has like 10,000, 20,000, 100,000 followers. That is step one. You gotta find people that have around the same problem with you. The next thing you're gonna do is you're gonna look at their pottery, and if you like something, only if you like something, like the pottery that they're making, comment, or even better yet, send them a DM saying, hey,
00:02:39
Speaker
I noticed your pottery and I thought you are absolutely crushing it. I love the way da da da da make it very specific and you know, keep, keep crushing it, keep crushing this game. And that that's all you have to do.
00:02:54
Speaker
Let me just send them a compliment. This is gonna be helped so much because we all like to see receive compliments, right? You know, I I know it on my Instagram when people leave something about my apartment. Oh, yeah, that looks really cool I get I get excited. I get a smile on my face So you just have to
00:03:12
Speaker
Give them a genuine compliment. You can leave them a comment on a post but DM them if you can. You just have to press send when you do that because the hardest part is probably just sending it and you just actually have to send it. So send them a genuine compliment about one specific thing you like about their pottery.
00:03:34
Speaker
So that is the two steps so far. So number one, you have to find potters around the same following as you. Number two is give them a genuine compliment. Commenting is good, but DMing is even better. So the step three here is once they have responded, especially if you DM them, ask them if you could ask a question about their pottery. Not just a random ask question. You need to ask them a question about their pottery.
00:04:03
Speaker
Because we're both, we're all potters here, right? So you want to make connections to other potters, so why not ask a question about their pottery? They're going to be very inclined to answer it, even if you didn't do the whole complimenting part first.
00:04:19
Speaker
Most people are probably going to say yes anyways. Just ask them if you can ask a question about their pottery. That specific question. If they respond, say, hey, thanks. I really appreciate the kind words. And say, can I ask you a question about your pottery? Question mark.
00:04:40
Speaker
that exact sentence. Can I ask you a question about your pottery?

Learning and Improving through Engagement

00:04:46
Speaker
You want to send them that question and this is where you're going to start building a relationship with them. Ask a very specific question. If they say yes, ask them a very specific question about their pottery. What do you want to learn about their pottery?
00:05:03
Speaker
That should be the fourth front of your mind. What do you want to learn? This is a question for you to learn, for you to learn more about pottery. Learn to try to apply the skills that they're doing to your own pottery. So that is the third step. So the step so far is number one, you have to find a potter around the same following as you. Number two, comment or send them a DM with something specific about what you like about their pottery. Number three, ask if you can ask them a question about their pottery. Ask them.
00:05:33
Speaker
Finally, number four is to have a conversation with them. Go back and forth. If they respond to you and they answer your questions, keep asking questions. Keep complimenting them. Have an actual conversation like a human being. Have a conversation with them. It's very simple to do. Just have a conversation with them.
00:05:53
Speaker
And that is pretty much it, right? Just have conversations with the value and send them ideas maybe about different techniques to improve their pottery. I'm sure everyone wants to hear new ways to make pottery. If you see a post on Instagram,
00:06:14
Speaker
that you think looks really cool and you think it would look good on the person you are chatting with, send them it. It's like, hey, I saw this and I think this would look so good on your pottery. Let me hear your thoughts on this. I would love to see you try that.
00:06:31
Speaker
Just, you know, provide value for them because we're all looking for new ideas to spark up our own pottery. If you see a post on Instagram, send it to them or have an idea, say, hey, I had this idea about your pottery. You could you could use it or not, but I wanted to tell you about it because I think this would look so good on your your pottery. Send them that. Send them that. Send them that. It's about having that conversation. Remember, step four, you have to have that conversation, provide value and send them that stuff.
00:06:59
Speaker
So to recap, the five steps here is number one, you have to find a potter that has around the same following as you. Number two, comment or send them a DM of something specific you love about their pottery.

Importance of Weekly Discussions

00:07:12
Speaker
The third step is ask if you can ask a question about their pottery.
00:07:18
Speaker
Number four is have a conversation, right? Go back and forth about your pottery, maybe, and just have that conversation. Number five, provide value, give them ideas to help improve their pottery. And then if you really, really, really want to build an even better relationship, try this out. I can't tell you how this has helped me so much.
00:07:44
Speaker
I started doing like a weekly mastermind with somebody that I know, right? We do a weekly mastermind, we talk about our pottery, we talk about our business code, we talk about social media, and we talk about all these different things. And once a week, because we are having those conversations, it helps so much. It gets your thoughts out and you get to start trying new things out. And if you really want to build a very deep relationship, try asking
00:08:11
Speaker
You know, one of the people that you are talking with, ask them if you would want to chat over phone or over Zoom once a week so that we can keep our goals aligned so we can help improve our pottery. This will help you out so much. Your skill level will grow by leaps and bounds. I promise you that. You just have to ask them if they would want to chat once a week.
00:08:37
Speaker
because these conversations that you're gonna have are gonna be so, so beneficial and it's gonna help you out so much and it's gonna help them out as well because you might say something that they're like, oh yes, that's a good idea. I should try that with my own pottery, right? And you like, you share the things that you are learning with them and they're gonna share the things that they are learning with you and it becomes this flow and you, two minds remember are better than one and there's this saying I heard
00:09:06
Speaker
So when two minds come together, a third mind is created from those two minds. Could you imagine what that could do to your pottery just by simply asking if they would want to chat once a week about your pottery, about how to sell your pottery, about growing your pottery business, right? You're gonna gain so much insight into what you're trying to achieve with your pottery. I hope you guys enjoyed this episode and I'll see you guys in the next one.
