Introducing the Airbrush in Pottery

00:00:47
Speaker
What is up, Shaping Nation? This is Nick Horsey. And on this episode of Shaping Your Pottery, I'm going to be talking about a pottery tool that I just found out and started using that can really, really help a lot. So this pottery tool is an airbrush. And you're probably asking yourself, Nick, why the heck is an airbrush going to help me with my pottery? How is it such a good tool? Well,
00:01:13
Speaker
an airbrush, for me at least, is very, very good because I don't have my own kiln, right? I don't have my own kiln, so I have to go to other places to get my work fired. And that can get kind of expensive sometimes, especially if I'm using glazes. So what I have been doing with my characters is that

Airbrush Techniques and Efficiency

I would just get them bisque fired, which is like $10. That's very, very cheap to get them bisque fired. So I'll get them bisque fired. And instead of using glazes, I've been using acrylic paint. And the thing about acrylic paint, though, is that if you're painting it by brush, it makes it look unique and see the strokes and doesn't look as good. I've never been good at painting in my life. And like I can always see the strokes. I'm never good at it. But an airbrush.
00:02:04
Speaker
It eliminates all the strokes and you can just pretty much do it like an assembly line pretty much where you get one color and then you get the next color and next color. You do multiple pots or characters in a row just by simply using an airbrush or any type of air, you know, compressor or air like thing like that. An airbrush can be so, so helpful too, because I'm pretty sure

Creative Applications of Airbrush

00:02:32
Speaker
I haven't tested this yet, but if you are deciding to get an airbrush and test it out, I'm pretty sure you could use it on like glazes because I've seen people use air compressors and stuff for glazes where they spray it instead of like dipping it.
00:02:49
Speaker
And you could use this for glazes as well. Just make sure to wash it out very well. But this will help you get that very, very easy texture, that easy design. It's going to be a lot easier compared to an actual brush. I just like this a lot because it speeds up my whole process of painting.
00:03:08
Speaker
And I don't have to sit there painting each one by hand. Now I could just spray it each one and it becomes much faster and it becomes much cleaner as well. And you can use so much more stuff with an airbrush compared to like a regular brush. Even if you were just using a regular brush for like glazes. If you had an airbrush, one you get done so much faster.
00:03:32
Speaker
Two, you can expand your way of making things a lot better. So let's say I've ever seen those videos where it's someone making like a space design out of like spray cans.
00:03:45
Speaker
And they use that and they use different spray cans and it comes out and makes it look really, really cool, makes it look space. You see like a planet and stuff looks really, really cool. You could use that same thing with an airbrush by simply covering some spots, using the airbrush and then get the color and you cover that spot and you use the airbrush again for a different color. It makes everything so much faster. So I just want to tell you guys about the airbrush that I discovered.

Investing in Quality Tools

00:04:14
Speaker
It's really just I found it on Amazon like third dollars. I recommend probably get a more expensive one because this one kind of dies a little bit fast. But if you go down the airbrush route.
00:04:26
Speaker
Try to find in more expensive ones ones like $100 not too too bad $100 isn't too bad for it, but try to get a little bit more expensive one and your workflow will probably The explanation speed up. I can't tell you how much I love my airbrush right now. I love it so much So with that in mind, I hope you guys enjoy this episode and I'll see you guys in the next one
