On this episode of Shaping Your Pottery I go deeper on not being afraid to mess up your pottery from the conversation with Martha Grover.

Messing up your pottery can be scary because we spent so much time and effort to try and make that one piece of pottery, but the more we can play around with our pottery and mess things up the faster you are going to start discovering our own voice in our pottery.

Messing things up, it can be very, very scary at first if you are a beginner in pottery because when we're beginners, we want to keep everything because we are
00:00:42
Speaker
we're proud of our work and it takes a lot of effort to make our pottery so it's hard to make our pottery sometimes so we're very proud of our work so we want to make everything as perfect as we can and we want to keep everything and we want to literally just everything to be perfect because it takes so much time and effort but I'm here to tell you that you don't need to keep everything you don't need to have everything to be perfect

Discovering Personal Style Through Errors

Speaker
One of the things that I found interesting during the interview with Martha Grover was that she encourages people to mess up their pottery. And that is so, so valuable when you are trying to discover your own voice because this is what is going to help you find what you like and what you don't like. When you are able to mess up your pottery, you are able to see things in another light.

Speaker
If you are only keeping what you think is perfect, then you are never going to find your own pottery style. So you have to come in with the intention sometimes to just mess up your pottery.

Creativity in Alteration of Perfect Pots

Let's say you are making a 12 inch vase. Let's say that. Just 12 inch vase.

this face is really nice and round and it has a really good rim and everything is just looks super nice about it and this took probably 30 minutes for you to make now what if
00:02:15
Speaker
Instead of keeping that pot, what if you try to alter it a little bit? You try to mess it up a little bit. You try to make little holes or little dimples here and there or maybe little lines to try to alter the shape. Maybe make it look like a flower. And what if you just went into the intention of literally just messing up this perfect piece, this perfect pot that you made?

Growth Through Risk-Taking in Pottery

and see where it takes you because we're not just going in there to mess things up for like no reason. We're going in there to experiment. And that's what pottery is pretty much about. That's what finding your voice is about. It's about trying to alter your pottery to find something that works for you, something that you love to make. So next time you are trying to
00:03:07
Speaker
Make a perfect pot. Try going with the intention to destroy the vase, mess up the vase a little bit, because this is where your growth is really going to start happening. If you aren't afraid to take those risks of messing up your pottery, messing up whatever it is that you're making, because we learn from our failures. And if if you don't like doing it after a while, then stop because pottery is how we make it and how other people see it. We want to make pottery that we are proud of. So that's why

If you go in with the intention of messing up your pottery, then you're going to be able to see improvements as you go. You're going to see what you don't like and what you do like.
