Speaker: Okay, tell us who you are, what you do, and how you got into the wedding industry.
Speaker: Guys, this is terrible. Yeah. Okay, I'm Kayla. I'm a wedding photographer. And I got, I'm like, next question. um I feel like I got into this industry after my own wedding.
Speaker: Like, I don't even think we'll actually sorry. Let me skirt back a little bit. I actually went to school to become a labor and delivery nurse, and then I skipped like my nursing like pinning ceremony. I don't know if you guys know this about me. No.
Speaker: I skipped my nursing like pinning ceremony where you get like your pin from your professors that you're officially a nurse to go shoot my first wedding. oh wow isn't that was it a good wedding was it worth skipping the pinning yes it was actually one of my it was my best friend Eileen's shout out bestie oh um it was her husband's mom.
Speaker: getting old for the first time yeah it was so cute I love that and they trusted me to photograph their day with like one camera I think I bought Like a harness, but I didn't have like two cameras. I just had one On the one side, that worked.
Speaker: And then are you, I mean, you obviously, even though you missed the pinning, you still are like. mean that' Oh, yeah. I'm still on yours. Yeah. I just skipped that part. like um Ceremony. Ceremony. I did all the work. I'm a nerdy. Yeah.
Speaker: What is this? But I love it. And what do you love most about weddings? This is so cheesy. Just tell us.
Speaker: ah I'll spill it. Dude, I don't know if this is like a selfish reason, but I just love being a part of like someone's most special day. It's so great. And you're such a good hype girl. I love hyping them up. there' ah Kayla's like an Energizer bunny when you're shooting with her. That's sweet.
Speaker: So cute. No, I... Yeah, I just love couples. I love love. i I don't know Why else do people... We couldn't.
Speaker: guys i suck at this no you're doing great you're doing great That's great. um um I mean, what's like a piece of advice? Like when someone's hiring a photographer.
Speaker: That you would like, okay, that's a good question Oh, couples. Definitely interview. I'm like, where's the camera? interview Camera two. Like definitely hop on. I don't know. When you first start inquiring with photographers, we all like.
Speaker: want to hop on a chat with someone or like meet for coffee or yeah I mean meeting for coffee isn't as common but like hop on a call and that's just so you see if you guys can vibe because aside from you guys like We are the most.
Speaker: interacted with. vendor throughout the day so if you don't vibe with your photographer you're not gonna vibe with your Day. Wedding day. Yeah. yeah Agreed. Really important. We agree. um
Speaker: So sorry, I lost my train of thought. All right. OK, but I mean, I agree. I think we tell our couples like I mean, like most vendors, you should interview like reach out to like three. Yeah. And for sure, photographers, you should meet with them, whether it's like both of you. Yes. Complete couple. Not just a bride or a groom. Right.
Speaker: You need to make sure that you know feel comfortable. yeah So the groom feeling comfortable with photographers is like a really big deal. like Yeah, and you can see that in photos. I think that's a big... they're like
Speaker: Big boy smile. Literally. Come on. Yes. But. I feel like I was gonna say something else.
Speaker: Oh, like ask them. good questions to like what's their Posing style or how do they handle like. I don't know not difficult situations but like are they fluid and flexible with like changes that you guys make throughout the day because i feel like I don't know wedding time i'm going way off track but like wedding timelines and stuff they Almost never go like a courting shoe.
Speaker: like bit by bit what we make with the wedding planner. But like. Except for capital occasions. I have a perfect day with them every time. Obviously. But like if things run behind, like you need to be able to adjust and like move.
Speaker: things around yeah um portrait wise because it's such a big part of the thing Yeah, if they're like super flexible, it's huge. Yeah. And I think too, like from a wedding party standpoint and like family.
Speaker: Like we've heard. like horror stories of like mean photographers yeah and i'm like where are they i know with them and yeah and why are they so angry at people like yeah but you need like a photographer that can wrangle your family wrangle your bridal party but like not in a
Speaker: Rude way. Like, I mean, we, like, you have, I think, too, it's, there needs to be a photographer that has, like, a backbone. Yeah. To be able to, like. No. All right, like, let's do this, but not, like, scream at people. No. And they should fit in with your personality, too, yeah right? Like, I.
Speaker: I have. like so many other photographer friends and the valley and like. They... have different personalities and things to offer a client whereas like me, like I'm perfectly okay with.
Speaker: being too much for some couples, but then like other couples love it, you know? Yeah. And like, I have. sweet, calm photographer friends that are just like. They fucking. kill it.
Speaker: like They do such a good job. And their photos turn out so differently than mine because... mind -like. We're like. laughing the whole time yeah you feel the energy yeah super joyful and like yeah silly we're gonna be having fun Whereas like.
Speaker: Shout out Nina Lorenz. I love you so much. She is just like. the sweetest like calmest spirit of a photographer and like just really notices like the tiniest little yeah things She is the most underrated photographer in the whole Valley. Don't put that on the podcast. but like yeah Her galleries are un -fucking -real. Like, so so beautiful.
Speaker: Yeah, sorry if I'm talking. to No, that's great. I was like, I'm nervous. And now I'm talking. See? It's so easy. It really is. um What's like a is' like a behind -the -scenes challenge that like couples might not?
Speaker: See you. No on a wedding day. Do you have any like I had a really good one and now I can't That was like my one that I was like getting ready in the mirror today. and I know the answer to this a challenge.

Speaker: I mean, do you feel like challenge? is it challenging Is it ever challenging to work with like a videographer? Like, I mean, is that ever like? No. I mean, you seem to think that seems to go usually pretty well. Yeah. Divorced families. Oh, yeah. Divorced families.
Speaker: No. I'm trying to think of something from like a shooting like standpoint. Oh, i yes. Okay, so the biggest hot, like... Topic commodity with.
Speaker: photos right now is you want like all the candids right But in order to have candid photos. Let's hear it for the people in the back. You need to be candid and.
Speaker: Like.
Speaker: you know, yeah be present during your day. Like I can't create a candid moment from nothing. like I can try my best. and Ah! be like grab her ass and like make you guys laugh and everything. Don't put that on there.
Speaker: But. Like. If you're not, I don't know, that's a challenge that we face. yeah because People send me this mood board and then they're not even standing next to their partner for their whole rest of their day. Right. They're wanting all these Pinterest photos, but they're not like.
Speaker: Being present in the moment, doing the things. So I feel like that's a challenge. That would be hard. And then. Like family photos is always a difficult. time for photographers but i feel like that doesn't go unnoticed i think everyone knows that that's kind of one of the most like it's difficult for everyone and yeah get back over here literally so brides have your dj or
Speaker: officiate make an announcement after ceremony all families stay nearby but Um... Yeah. Making that list, making sure every family photo is like something that you actually really want and will value and not just because you typed in your list to chat GBT and you're sending me 60 combinations. like I don't think you want to miss your cocktail hour.
Speaker: yeah Almost your cocktail hour. yeah That's when all of your fun, candid moments come yeah from. Because you just walk back up the aisle. Everyone's coming up to you like... That's like one of my favorite parts to photograph is that, sorry. my Kind of.
Speaker: Um. Is like that walk back up the aisle. It's pure joy pure emotion They completely forget that i'm there entirely and then they see all their people right after that So if we can bust out all of your photos not bust out have a great time and have But in a way, bust out yeah.
Speaker: Bust out. all of the family photos before then you can get all those candid moments that you really enjoy. That you really want, yeah. I'm talking a lot.
Speaker: No, this is good. That's what we want. Okay. That's perfect. This is rant. I just thought of this too, but I think it's important for people to hear like. I think like what is like a normal. like coverage time because you know like there's some photographers are like oh well well we can do six hours eight hours ten hours twelve hours but like no realistically Like what is like minimum?
Speaker: I mean to get everything that most couples want. So I Which, this is an unpopular opinion of mine, but... Because I know other photographers in the Valley don't offer a six hour package, but mine starts at six just because.
Speaker: If you don't have a wedding party, if you don't... care about like getting ready photos or having as much of your reception covered we can totally do everything in six hours we could even do everything in four hours if you just wanted like Ceremony. Yeah. Reception.
Speaker: portraits And that's all. So my base... pricing starts at six hours. And then I have an eight hour package also. And that kind of covers. um Like if you want more of the getting ready or reception part.
Speaker: um and sometimes the full day depending on how long your wedding is and then There's the 10 hour package, which like covers everything from when. You finish getting your makeup done to send off pretty much. So it just depends. like Yeah.
Speaker: Like what they're wanting to include. What they want. But if it's like a normal where you want getting ready to send off, I mean, you think like eight to ten hours is like. Eight to ten, yeah. what It really just, yeah, it really just depends. Like, do they have a wedding party? do yeah Are they doing a first? Is there 12 people in their wedding party or are there three? Yeah, no, right. Right.
Speaker: It's just so... I mean I feel like the larger wedding parties have become so popular. Yes. And it just takes a long time to do like individual. They are fun. god They're so they are fun. Like I think of. Lauren and Sam's wedding that we did together.
Speaker: Yeah. there we're a fun group Their group was so fun and their bridal party was big. and They didn't do a first look. And I feel like... Because of that. We could have propped. No, because they'll send off too. Yeah. like Do you prefer when couples do... so First looks.
Speaker: What's your opinion on that? Um... Do I have an opinion? Um... i mean or do you like I mean, I guess from like a photography perspective, or is it better when they see each other for the first time down the aisle?
Speaker: Ah. I did a first look for my own wedding and I didn't think it took away from like. my ceremony or that i was bawling the whole time do you guys remember that i like got my makeup redone like three times i was such an emotional person.
Speaker: But... um which is also something. that you should look for in your photographer. because if they're emotional yes emotionally like aware of situations like if you guys are having a moment you don't want a photographer to be like oh no place your hand this way or like try and like stage you differently from how you already are right just embrace the moment yeah And you want someone who... is versatile and able to like interact with your
Speaker: Family members and guests. And like know when not to interact if like. Yeah. Something's going down. We're like, I don't know.
Speaker: emotions are high during weddings so just having someone who is um emotionally aware is really important. But um what was I talking about? First look. Okay, I did one and it didn't take away, but also I've seen...
Speaker: Some ceremonies where I like... Can't imagine it any other way for that. If they would have done it for us, it didn't feel right. Yeah. And do what feels right. To you, don't do a first look because you're catering to...
Speaker: what your vendors want you to do right just know that if you don't do a first look All of the portraits that you're sending. your photographer and all the things that you're sending to your planner is going to be more condensed after your ceremony and if you're a more stressed Type A.
Speaker: Which is totally cool. Bridal girly. That's fine. No, it's fine. But maybe you should do a first look if you're more typing so that the things are more spread out and you're not. um I don't know. rush your fan next to true And if you want to join, like you said, if you want to join that cocktail for all those yeah moments, yes you need to do a first look. You need more than you're not going to have time. Dude, I sent out wedding questionnaires to my couples and i'll try and get like
Speaker: their portraits, wedding party portraits, and all their family portraits done before. Ceremony. It's just the best. that's my opinion yeah to yeah sorry no that's a good opinion but also i will do anything yeah do it i'm open to whatever i'll do anything you want this is what i think you should do but my only caveat to that is that you have to start your hair and makeup So early.
Speaker: For that for first look. Yeah. And that was like my big like I did not want to do for. So we didn't start her makeup till I think 11 a .m. Well, yeah, but there were, and on the flip side of that, there were four of us. So, I mean, that's sitting out like eight. Yeah, or seven. I mean, I've been in a wedding that started at 5 a .m. for hair and makeup. But that is something to think about when you think about number of people in your wedding party and like, yeah, what time you want. Yeah. All these things. It's crazy.
Speaker: Okay. I have to know what's your biggest pet peeve on a wedding day. And it could be vendor related. It could be. gas and wedding like whatever and now it's my biggest pet peeve ever Okay, so I was just shooting wedding.
Speaker: And. I was... Okay. I love DJs. I love them. ah But they really hype. like the dance i don't know i'm such a dancing high energy person like a good dj Or even like Brides to Your Playlist. Like if you just make a fire playlist.
Speaker: Pop that shit on a speaker. Like. Getting ready -wise? Unpopular opinion. Oh. No, during the reception. No, we're not doing that. Don't say that. Sorry. Oh, David's going to beat me up. That's not allowed.

Speaker: Oh, OK, so I was. Shooting this wedding. And. little backstory. I just bought a new camera and the file sizes are like a little bit. bigger than...
Speaker: what I'm used to And so when I'm like, getting ready for like grand entrance first dance and all that stuff I like peek at like how many You guys don't care about this. Anyways. My... The file sizes are bigger, so my SD card, like... ran out right after their first dance and they were going right into toasts and so i go up to the dj and i'm like hey i have to go switch out this card like really fast. I'm also at a venue that I'm not used to. It was in California. and
Speaker: All my stuff was in the barn, whatever. So I go in. or I tell the DJ, please do not start toasts. Please. Oh, God. Until you see me. Until you see me. And like...
Speaker: There are other people who have who like witnessed this interaction and he was like oh yeah
Speaker: I take like maybe like... a minute and a half to run into the barn and like grab my SD cards and all of a sudden I hear Oh, no. And he started toast without me being there.
Speaker: And I was like, bro, I've heard of that happening. but like it had never happened to me. Eh. Yeah, it happened one time and now it's my biggest pet peeve. Let us not start anything.
Speaker: well yeah i mean like without a photographer there yeah well and then it just made me look bad like I walk in and everyone's like, oh, it's because of you that we had the portions. Seriously? And I'm like running. Anyways, that yeah, that was irritating. but Yeah, I think it's hard when like any vendor, it's like.
Speaker: They just kind of in their own. Like blinded, like they're doing what they like, what they're hired to do. And it's like, and that's great. But like, there's so many more aspects of the day. So it's like, if you we don't all work work together, you're affecting.
Speaker: with What the couple paid the photographer to do. So, it's yeah, that's really frustrating. work and having You guys talked about this during... That episode where you talked about my wedding. But having a good vendor team.
Speaker: It changes everything. Yeah. Like you won't even really feel anything. yeah I was like. As the couple, like on my wedding day, I don't even remember like the cake dropping. The cake dropping. Well, not, true I mean. Who cares? I'm just kidding. Falling. No, it's fine.
Speaker: um It's fine. We're fine. It's fine. Look, we're still friends. And we ate the cake. and it was I didn't even notice. Allie, I think you told me about that like weeks after. I did. I like had to tell you. so That's what happened. You're so funny. Dude.

What do you like about working with like planners or coordinators, but what do you hate? Like we want to know like honest and what like there has to be some um sort of, I mean, I know we're like great, but like there has to be like, so there has to be some sort of also. Questions are so negative. You know, but I want to know. I want to know. I want to know like what. Jaden added this in because she's. I'm just curious. girl I'm just curious about.
Speaker: vendors opinions like what's like what works well when you have coordinators and planners and like what sometimes where you do you wish like a planner knew they're like i really hate when you do that And it doesn't have to be anything, but... Speaker: if you have a planner or a coordinator your photographer is able to do their job well If you... Don't have a planner or a coordinator? We take on. that job.
Speaker: And in my early days of which I'm still in my early days, I'm only like four. years into photographing weddings, but... my first year I was coordinating a lot of them too and I had like no time to be creative like Only staged portraits like you. Don't get those candid moments because we're like running around and doing your job. with Yeah. So when you're there, I get to like. be creative yeah have fun worry about what i'm supposed to worry about and not be running around and
Speaker: finding people and putting things where they need to go, etc. Um. My biggest pet peeve. with a planner, which this isn't even like. Crazy. But when.
Speaker: I understand that like... The bride's dress is very very important. We do not want to get it dirty. I don't want it to be dirty because then I have to Photoshop it. um but When...
Speaker: The bride is like... Going. Up the aisle and back up the aisle. Like. Please do not touch their dress. Otherwise, you guys aren't going to be in my photos and I have to find a way to edit you guys out, which is really hard when there's.
Speaker: Like ceremony people in the background. I'm going to mess up someone's face with the AI that Photoshop has going on right now. And. Yeah. So... Just like let the bride enter and exit. Let the bride enter and exit. And her dress will be fine. Yeah. Her dress will be okay. I get the fluff thing. Like fluff from far, far away. Like right at the beginning and then we run away. Yes. Yeah. Uh -huh. but don't like carry it for her.
Speaker: That walk back up the aisle. is Almost. I don't know how my couples feel about this, but those are always my favorite photos of the whole entire day. like They just got married. They're exiting. They're exiting, walking back up, high -fiving people. So if a planner interrupts... Like. that moment. It's almost like a photographer saying like, no, kiss like this instead.
Speaker: like you um yeah it's Could you redo that first kiss for me? I feel like that's really my only... um I love planners. yeah I just love them.
Speaker: Pretty great. and like What's my second sandwich? My second positive sandwich? Um... It helps having a buddy. Yeah. To talk to.
Speaker: It does. so much Yeah. And like, sure fun yeah. Yeah. I mean, I agree. The more vendors, the merrier in my mind. As long as they're all like.
Speaker: You know. willing to work together yes When there's too many vendors and they're like crabby or mean or like. Mm -hmm.
Speaker: But it's so fun, like, at certain venues, like, when we have a good vendor suite. Oh, it's the best. And there's, like, six or eight of us in there, and we're just, like. I always think, too, or, like, when we're, like, hiding in the kitchen at Deer Flat, and we're all just, like, in that tiny little kitchen, like, chit -chatting and talking. Yeah. And then the guest, like, pokes her head in and, like, needs something, and you're like, oh, I'm sorry. We're just catching up. We're just hanging out. It is fun. It is so fun. It is super fun.
Speaker: I love it. I know I loved hanging out with you. ah Like, I feel like I've. really grown to know Allie since our wedding and then On.
Speaker: my wedding day you drove me to the to walk down the aisle yeah that was like my first time really meeting and you were like i love you guys so much and i was like who is this lady I was like, I'm just, get out of the car. Why y 'all not go get married? And I was, like, emotional in your car. Yeah. But, like. I remember that. No, it feels so. Like. Good with you guys. I love you guys so much. And like.
Speaker: I've always loved Allie, but I feel like I've really to know Jaden too, like especially this last like year and a half. working together yeah and you're just I know we got you with so many of our clients last year.
Speaker: These fives have slayed. Literally slayed. And how long have you guys been in business now? Eight years. Wow. ah This eighth season. Well, that's the game craziest season of our life.
Speaker: We are here. Yeah, this will be a big year. Craziest season. Craziest season of our lives. If you're a planner, don't have a baby in July. Just throwing it out there. It's not ideal for business. It'll be fine. It'll be great. so yeah guess What's your favorite wedding that you've shot or favorite venue? Oh, yeah. It's a good one.

Speaker: I mean, I know you just got back from California, right? Yeah, I really love. I'm so inspired by California. Like, I don't know what it is. Like the air hits different there in the light. It's like so milky. and beautiful like Is that what you want to do, though? like Do you want to go out out of Idaho?
Speaker: TBD. I honestly... would be perfectly fine with. perfectly fine. I would be very glad to stay. Home and just do. weddings in idaho but then i have a oregon wedding next weekend that i'm only driving like five hours like that's not that bad of a drive yeah you know that's kind of fun yeah change of scenery yes yeah But I think as a photographer, I think it'd be fun. I think it's like.
Speaker: i For me, it would kind of stresses me out because it's like logistically for us, like it's so... If it's like a venue, we don't know. And we're trying to like figure out the layout and all these things. I'm like, I don't know. this So that's why I don't think it would be very fun for us. yeah like if I think it would be so cool. Like, yeah, go to Mexico, go to Hawaii. Okay, that, yes. I feel like... The travel.
Speaker: Just. I don't know. It really just depends where. yeah Like, I would love to do an East Coast wedding. Cape Cod or something? Yes. And then, like... Yeah, like, or Majorca, Spain. I want to go there.
Speaker: So beautiful. You're out there. My bride from two weekends ago. Is honeymooning there right now? And I'm like living through her stories. I feel like just because it was the most recent, that's probably like... One of my.
Speaker: Favors. news. Sweet Isabel and Grant's wedding and Ida's song. That was a white barn? Yes. And I left like... actually like crying in my car because i was like this is like she was just my dream bride like she just really like leaned into everything like they did like an espresso martini tower their dance floor was lit as hook Like I just love.
Speaker: a good dance floor where they're doing crazy shit. Like she was like jumping off the table, like proud surfing club. And like they got in an actual cake fight. I've never seen one at a wedding. Normally the bride is like.
Speaker: Don't ruin my makeup. Totally. like I get it. I didn't. I think actually Rob and I fall a little bit. but like they like like there was cake like smashed in her ring like she just like embraced it all i loved it like she embraced everything it's kind of fun yes it is i mean because i mean i get it like the cake cutting like you were saying like yeah don't mess it up but it is it is kind of
Speaker: it would be kind of fun it's like your only time in life that you're ever like why would you ever get to do that well at that point most of your photos are done so you might as well just smash the cake right and like ah be silly and you know Like, who cares, you know, about the whole day?
Speaker: but but like Or just trust your vendors, you know? Yeah. know that they They got it. I get it. I get being type A. I feel like I'm type like. Okay, you're type A. What are you? Are you type B?
Speaker: I feel like you and I are like similar. Like we're. We know what we want. yeah But we don't really care how we like get it. sort of thing yeah and like we don't really know how we're gonna get no yeah and i'm like 100 literally fine yeah no it's great but i i can tell you exactly what i want yeah same but And if I don't get that, I'm going to stress about disappointed. But like, I'm not going to be like, well, I like.
Speaker: Yeah, it's not going to ruin your life if it didn't work out. Buh - Do you feel like that with traveling lately? Like when you travel. Like you want to stay in like a nice place.
Speaker: Oh, always. My mom. Me too. will Run. Your mom spoils your run. Yeah, like she was like only the best hotels. Ah. So now like I can't travel to home crappy place. And I'm like, you want me to spend what on what? As long as I have a bed and there's no bugs.
Speaker: No, no, no. wedding No, no, no. California that I just did. They all stayed out like a casino resort, like a pool and everything. And. I ended up booking like a Hilton.
Speaker: like home two suites or whatever and i walked into my room and i'm like Should have stayed at the pachanga.
Speaker: but Your wedding photographer, you just see gambling. Hey, when we have a wedding at Shore Lodge. I try to stay there every time. I've never stayed there. There's no reason not to. It's delicious. It's too expensive because I haven't had a wedding of my own in Sun Valley yet.
Speaker: McCall. Oh wait. It's on. Sorry, that's not what I meant. But the Sun Valley one. I would um that we for lodge i have stayed there two times.
Speaker: That's delicious. So great. Especially in the winter. you have done I guess that's all you want to but spend, you know. What do you want to spend? Yeah. Do we have any more or are we ending?
