Understanding Mind and Identity

Speaker
I know that my mind isn't always right, that my thoughts are not always right. But when I'm aware that my mind interprets my perceptions and emotions, then it becomes clear that I can easily make a mess of my understanding of what happens around me. I've seen so many times how I use my thoughts to create beliefs that I soon transform into my identity.

I think, I believe, and then I think I am that belief. Later on, I defend my identity. I say, this is how I am.

Embracing Skepticism and Humility for Growth

And I easily forget that the whole process started with my mind thinking and making me believe, and then I must remember that is my mind the one that is not always right.

I'm not suggesting that our minds are bad for us, I'm just saying that we need to add a bit of skepticism and humility to what we think we know and what we believe.

Creativity, innovation, invention and even imagination require a special mindset that seems initially mysterious and hard to get and at the same time seems to happen when we are relaxed, open-minded and inclusive with others.

Overcoming Mind's Resistance to Change

00:01:38
Speaker
Our mind seems to resist change in many ways. Maybe we can use that knowledge to break limitations and get the best out of our mental capacities. When we see our mind engaging in a rant, protecting things as they are, and resisting change, or when our thoughts and emotions aren't helping,

aren't helping the situation, I mean. We find ourselves often believing that our interpretation of the situation is the right one.

Freedom from Mind's Perceptions

00:02:12
Speaker
The momentum of our thoughts and feelings, the inertia of our resistance to change, can quickly bring us to lose our objectivity. That is when our healthiest skepticism and humility must play a role.
00:02:31
Speaker
The awareness of our resistance to change and the force and momentum of some mental states can be seen as a barrier or as an opportunity. We can move in any direction as soon as we don't unconditionally believe what our minds say about our perceptions, emotions, and reality. It starts feeling like freedom.
