Onana's Struggles at Manchester United

00:00:02
Speaker
Welcome to the Italian football podcast.
00:00:06
Speaker
That brings us on very mighty. Andrew Onanis seems to be the interdisease that when the interplayers. I want to give you some thoughts because I wrote a couple of articles on Onanis this week for football transfers because Onanis is getting absolutely hammered. Everybody knows now he's had a disastrous start to his career at Manchester United. He's been making mistake after mistake. This week again, another huge mistake. He gave a hospital pass to
00:00:35
Speaker
It's a Kasamiro in the gate, the defeat against Garatasaray. And then as a result, Kasamiro got sent off because of it.

Onana's Shot-stopping Concerns

00:00:44
Speaker
And then the winner from Icardi was just awful goalkeeping from Icardi like chipped it from about eight yards away from him and he went down so easily. Lovely chip. It was a lovely chip with dreadful goalkeeping. So, yeah, he's having a nightmare of things.
00:01:02
Speaker
I want to ask the question then, I'm going to read you some stats out. I want to ask the question whether, is there a possibility that Anana was maybe a bit overrated in top? We all know, nobody denies that he's probably the best in the world with the bulldog distribution, not that that Casimir would suggest that, but he's brilliant with his feet, he's brilliant at press breaking.
00:01:25
Speaker
he's so strong, he's very commanding, he's a leader. These are all very important attributes for a goalkeeper when you're leading your defence and everything. So I'm not taking any of that away from him. But when we look at actually
00:01:38
Speaker
his basic goalkeeping, which is saving the ball, shot-stopping, his actual shot-stopping stats at Intel weren't actually very impressive. So he only had the ninth highest safe percentage in Serie A last season. The best in the league was actually Provedel of Lazio, then it was Chesney, then Merritt, then Skorubsky, then Vicario at Empoli, Falcone, Lecce, Cepes, Eleni Tana, Milinkovic, Savage at Torino in eighth place, and then Onana was ninth.
00:02:08
Speaker
He made 61 saves in the Serie A season. Only one goalkeeper who played as many or more games than him made less saves than Anand, and that was Terechano at Fiumatini, and I think neither of us rate him very highly.
00:02:23
Speaker
And Inter conceded 42 goals in 38 games. Their expected goals against was 36.

Debating Onana's True Value

00:02:30
Speaker
So they let in six goals more than they should have done based on their expected goals. I know Handanovic played, I think, 14 games. So that wasn't all Anana's fault. But Anana averaged one goal conceded per game in Serie A. Obviously, this isn't all on Anana. This is also on the defence and the team. And Inter lost seven and drew three of these 24 matches Anana played. They won 14 of them.
00:02:52
Speaker
And also, size sports, which is a very respected football statistics site, which is used by professional clubs, they showed that Onana had a negative record when it came to saving expected goals. He conceded 0.04 more goals per 90 than he should have. It's not hugely a negative number.
00:03:16
Speaker
he's still under negative and he also had an average of 0.67 shot stopping errors per 90 minutes and just to define that shot stopping error is defined as a shot on target with a per shot expected goal value smaller than 0.25 which was not saved by the goalkeeper so that was an average of he made an average of 0.67 shot stopping errors per 90 that number has now ballooned
00:03:45
Speaker
at Manchester United to 1.21, so it's basically doubled. So based on these stats, is there a possibility that maybe Onana's just basic goalkeeping was overrated a little bit because of all the other great things that he did with Inter?
00:04:02
Speaker
Well, I never overrated it. I've said consistently the same thing since he joined. And that is that two things. First, if you replace Samir Handanovic because Inter were so exhausted with Handanovic because he was so past his best.
00:04:18
Speaker
Just the fact that you had a goalkeeper that came in and was no longer a statue rooted to the spot was always going to be an improvement just by virtue of being someone else other than Handanovic.
00:04:36
Speaker
And then I've said consistently, so I'm just going to reiterate, André Ornana is a decent shot stopper. What makes him unique is the ball-playing ability, is the vision, is the technique. He has the technique and creativity of an outfield midfielder. I honestly think that he would do, if he had the pace and stamina to play in

Impact of Team Environment on Onana's Performance

00:05:00
Speaker
midfield, I think he would be an excellent midfielder.
00:05:04
Speaker
because his vision, his passing, his shooting, his mentality, all of those things are, if not world-class and world-class adjacent. However, his shot-stopping has never been his strength, in my opinion. And I said it at the time, and I know a lot of Inter fans got triggered and pissed off by it, but I didn't really care because
00:05:25
Speaker
It's the truth. I never overrated him. I think he's a good goalkeeper, but then there's... I didn't mean you, Nemo. I meant just the consensus. Yeah, but the consensus was, again, if you replace Samir Handanovic, it's just, who was he replacing? He was coming off a doping suspension. He was coming off to replace a goalkeeper who has been a problem at Inter for at least three years.
00:05:54
Speaker
And so just by virtue of not being Handanovic, he was going to be a breath of fresh air that everyone at Inter and everyone watching Inter was going to appreciate. Now, I think, again, the second point, there's a nuance here, and that is he came to an Inter that is incredibly organized and has a very clear identity and a very clear
00:06:16
Speaker
identity and defensive identity and team, and a manager who has things and a structure in place, at least on the sporting side in terms of the first team is concerned, that it is working, right? At Man United, he's surrounded by an absolute burning shit fire of a toilet. I'm sorry. It's a dumpster fire. Manchester United are a dumpster fire of a club. The squad is poorly constructed.
00:06:45
Speaker
off the pitch we don't even need to get into. Eric Tanharg is doing everything he can to make this work, but there's clearly something else that's not working, and he goes in there, and it's already a bit shaky. He's going to be who he is. He wants to impose himself and show how good he is and what he can do.
00:07:09
Speaker
And he starts getting criticized for yelling at Harry Maguire, and he gets this, that, and the other. And all the rest of the keen Neville, Ferdinand, the old guard all have opinions, and they all just keep chiming in and destabilizing Man United with their comets.
00:07:33
Speaker
uh... at this point i think if they really want to be if they if they if they love my united they should just be quiet now because i think they're destabilizing the club more than anything uh... and because of how already how brittle and and and destabilize my united are it doesn't take much to to destabilize my united at this point maybe it's but it's just not say anything uh... and and so he's impossible that that maybe
00:08:02
Speaker
we're not getting the best out of even the ball-playing ability of Anina because the players around him are not very particularly good on the ball. No,

Onana's Future and Cultural Fit at Man United

00:08:10
Speaker
no. The defenders in front of him are not particularly comfortable with the ball, to be honest with you, not like most of the inter-players, with the exception of Dumfries, who in Zaghi would push up as a right-winger when they were building up because they didn't want him to touch the ball.
00:08:23
Speaker
No, they wanted to run an attack of the ball, though that's what they wanted him to do. They didn't want him to transport the ball, and that's exactly it. You know, I don't have too many kind of players that are uncomfortable in possession, but it's not just that. He's made horrific errors. There's no doubt about that. Sane is unacceptable. The one that passed under the Icardi goal, it's just awful goalkeeping, that Icardi goal. Horrific to go down like that.
00:08:52
Speaker
and so easily. And then the password because Samira as well. I mean, I think this is what I think that why I think that people you know, you should don't let's not he wasn't as good as he was hyped up to be. And he's not as bad as he's being dragged down now.
00:09:08
Speaker
But do you think that into, because I remember I said it and I put my hands in, I mean, it's too early to say, but I put my hands up and said that I thought that into undersold or nana. Do you think maybe they didn't undersell him? Maybe this was actually his value or maybe even above his value, maybe. No, I don't think it was above his value. I'd say it's around what he's worth.
00:09:28
Speaker
Because again, remember,

Man United's Structural Issues

00:09:30
Speaker
he came back from a doping suspension. He had one season. There were question marks there. And so I think Marotta did a good job for how much he sold him for. But of course, it is what it is at the end of the day.
00:09:50
Speaker
Again, I reiterate, I don't think Onana is as bad as being made out to be now, and I don't think he was as good as people were making him up to be then. Then, because of the Handanovic situation and him replacing Handanovic, and also his mentality, he suited really well in at the club as well. He really got on with the fans, with the club. Again, the mentality he has at Inter
00:10:14
Speaker
Fans want you to show a specific kind of leadership and they want to have characters. You have to have character. And he has that. At Man United, it's a different culture. Every club, I'm not saying better or worse, I'm just saying every club and every club has its own DNA and history and how you behave. At Inter, he fit in perfectly.
00:10:32
Speaker
Maybe he will maybe he'll return in a couple of years like on loan once on that one summer it's like 36 37 he's too old and I know we'll come back on loan maybe. Hashtag intercurs you know all of them all of them returning on loan I mean he's considered 18 goals in 10 games for United but then again that defense I'm sorry it's just well yeah actually I want to say that because
00:11:01
Speaker
10 hag, I'm sorry. He's playing Sofiaan Amrabbat at left back. What the hell is going on? I'm sorry, when I used to go on about a leg replay, I used to go on a leg replay in Kiesa as a second right back. You're playing Amrabbat at left back. What is that about?
00:11:21
Speaker
I don't care if Luke Shaw's injured, what's his name, the other guy's not available, Reggi Lan is not available. I don't care. You do not play soft in. I mean, that is, I'm sorry, that is just, that is hanging him out to dry. I mean, he was horrible. Two of the goals were partly, at least partly down to him. What? I mean, come on. Come on.
00:11:44
Speaker
I mean, I'm saying I don't care if I've just joined you. I'm not playing it left back. You're hanging me out to dry here. I mean, you know, I agree. And I think that there are issues there. And again,
00:11:58
Speaker
The problems, you know, Man United have problems. They keep spending money, but they don't spend it on the right players and they don't seem to be able to get a structure going. It seems to just, you know, go round and round and round. They win a title here and there, mine a title here and there, and everyone thinks, oh,
00:12:14
Speaker
the glory glory days are back again and they're not because they're structurally something not working.

Ten Hag's Management and Future

00:12:20
Speaker
I haven't been impressed by Tinhag everybody you know like if I look watch him play Tinhag play I don't see any of the AX football that that was that they brought him in for they brought him in to be this kind of
00:12:30
Speaker
high pressing, possession, possession play, modern play, you know, like the way AX play, total football, attractive football, dominating the ball, being in control of the game. They're facing, they're like a counter attacking team most of the time. Whenever they play against a good team, they just play as counter attacking. They're disjointed.
00:12:48
Speaker
Last season, they were bailed out by Rashford most of the time. This season, Rashford's playing badly, and we're seeing the results. I don't see any identity at all from Man United, so if he's not bringing any identity, then what is he bringing? I'm not denying that there's all these other ridiculous problems. It doesn't matter who the manager is, but I'm not seeing anything from tonight.
00:13:11
Speaker
No, and I think he's going to be sacked soon, if this continues. And again, I keep, look, I'm going to keep pushing that. I think they were mistaken not to bring in Antonio Conte. They should have brought in Antonio Conte when they did, when they could have and they didn't. Well, his name could be in the frame.
00:13:30
Speaker
I think Antonio Conte would just come in there and he would straighten it out and then, you know, he's also, the character he is, is more of the Sir Alex Ferguson school than, you know, he is a disciplined guy and Man United when they were at their best was a
00:13:51
Speaker
well-oiled machine. I don't understand why. You can't control him because Conte will throw everyone under the bus when he's not happy, but if you can handle him,
00:14:04
Speaker
That's part of the job of being a director of football is to handle the managers, to be able to create the, you know, be a diplomat and keep everyone happy. That's what you're supposed to do at a football club as a director. And it doesn't seem that United have anyone in charge. They have no structure whatsoever.
