Introduction and Origin Story

What is up everybody? And in this episode, I'm gonna tell you the story of my origin story. It's gonna be my origin story of how I started pottery. When I was a wee little lad, all the time I was drawing, making stuff, and I was always doing crafty things.
00:00:22
Speaker
And I really like drawing and making crafty things. I just like doing stuff with my hands that I just like that. It just felt really good to me when I was younger. But eventually I started getting a little bit past that. I didn't really get into as much like arts and crafts stuff as I grew up. I got more into sports and

Art Class Sparks Interest

00:00:45
Speaker
I've put most of my attention into sports and I didn't really practice doing crafty things all that much. It definitely wasn't as much as when I was younger. And come sophomore year,
00:01:00
Speaker
I was able to sign up for a art class for one of my classes that year of high school. And I was able to do this, and being in that class really kind of started sparking a lot of things. It started making me want to go back into art, wanting me to really explore more things that I could do with my hands. So that year really kind of sparked a lot of things. It really started the journey. And at the end of the year, I remember
00:01:30
Speaker
Like it was maybe about a month until the school ended that year ended and I was sitting with my friend and we were trying to decide what classes to take for the next year and we saw so I saw ceramics class on the paper that I could sign up for for my junior year and I was like I'm gonna do a ceramics class and I convinced my friend do it with me because it was either that or Do welding and I really did not want to do welding. I would rather much rather do ceramics so

Choosing Pottery Over Welding

The next year came, I'm a little bit more confident, a little bit more comfortable with high school, and I'm pretty excited to start making some pottery because it just seemed very exciting to me. So, I remember my first day, absolutely crap. It was really, really, really bad. The next time I threw on the wheel, really, really bad as well.
00:02:27
Speaker
I remember everybody else was starting to see progress while I was still kind of just there and I didn't really have my progress wasn't showing up as much and Other I was kind of getting a little bit frustrated myself because I wanted to I'm very competitive so I wanted to start seeing progress as well as like I wanted to beat my people that were having progress because I am
00:02:54
Speaker
I am competitive, my family's competitive, and we're just competitive people. I wanted to be better than them, so I kept working at it, and I kept working at it. Now, at this point, I'm not really in love with pottery as I am now, but I'm just kind of there enjoying it, and I just kind of want to get better at it because it's just something that is there.

From Sports to Pottery

00:03:17
Speaker
Now, here comes my
00:03:21
Speaker
I would say my second to last game of my baseball season. So it's May of my junior year and it's the second to last game of my baseball season that year and I was having a pretty good game. I think I was one for one with a walk and I was doing decently well on defense as well but then here comes the fourth third inning ish and I was playing third and there was a person on
00:03:49
Speaker
third as well as a runner on third and as I'm waiting to try to to prepare for the ball to come the batter hits a foul ball towards my my side to my right side so I start trying to run after it but I run into the to the runner on third and I'm scrambling around and just kind of toss him to the side a little bit and remember I take two more steps in a hyper extend my knee and
00:04:19
Speaker
I remember falling because it hurt and I couldn't do anything. I fell. I literally remember the whole way down. It was like slow mo I swear. And then I fell and I see the ball drop and it felt like it was like so close but it was like really like probably two feet from my glove and I remember just seeing it fall right pretty close to my glove and I just see that ball fall and I'm in so much pain already but I try to get up but the pain is
00:04:48
Speaker
way too great. And I can't, I can't get up and I'm taking every ounce of willpower not to just start cussing up a storm. And I'm literally just there kind of rolling around on the ground because it hurts so bad. And finally, I learned I learned later that I ended up having patella tendonitis maybe like the patella is right below your kneecap. And I couldn't
00:05:14
Speaker
I couldn't properly really bend my knee for like six months.

Diving into Pottery During COVID

00:05:18
Speaker
And it was really horrible. I couldn't do anything that summer. I couldn't hang out with my friends, go to the lake or whatever. I couldn't do anything really. So during that time, I spent time doing really two things. Reading books on like business and mindset and then watching a lot of pottery videos on YouTube. Like I was watching John Potter and a lot of other people. And during that time,
00:05:43
Speaker
I knew I was taking another SRAM class next year so I was kind of just trying to prepare myself so that I could be better this year than the year coming up than I was before. So I was just watching pottery videos and as I was watching these pottery videos, my inspiration began to grow.
00:06:02
Speaker
because every single time I was watching these pottery videos, I was like, oh, I can't wait to get back to class. I can't wait to start making these things. And that passion really started helping me out later on because this is what led to me getting more serious about pottery because during those like three months of summer, I was literally just did nothing but read books and pretty much watch pottery videos like all day. And that's literally what drove my passion on to like overdrive. And then finally,
00:06:33
Speaker
maybe about a year later, it's about a year, let's say six months actually, the school closed because of COVID. And so I didn't really have a way to make pottery, but luckily I had just bought a wheel because my friend bought a wheel that I want to make, I want to buy a wheel too. Cause I want to practice pottery more. So I bought a wheel and I started making pottery more, but COVID happened. So I couldn't really,
00:07:01
Speaker
make pottery with other people, but because COVID happened, I literally spent like three, four months just making pottery because that's all I could do and it was super fun for me. And during this time, I learned a lot and a lot and a lot and this helped me start developing my voice.

Love for Pottery Endures

00:07:20
Speaker
It started developing my pottery skills because I spent time and I just literally dove into pottery so much.
00:07:29
Speaker
And the rest is kind of history. I just kept on making pottery, kept on being excited about pottery. And that's why I love pottery. I hope you enjoyed this story, because this is just my origin story.
