Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : All right. And we're back here with episode two. We had a great time doing episode one. Tim, I think. you can attest that that was really fun and we're we're pumped to do this one as well In terms of tonight, what we want to do with you is we're going to break the show into three little parts. We're going to try a little bit of a formatting thing, so give a little more structure. We're going to try a pregame session where we just do a little bit of feedback and some comments about episode one.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : We'll go into game time. You know, that's the real focus of this episode. It's going to be on some Luke Murray numbers and analysis of why we like Luke Murray at BC so much, including a roster breakdown as well. Did some homework there and and the portal guys that he added.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : Then we'll end with an overtime session where we we basically just share a little bit of personal anecdotes about why we love basketball. So pretty pretty action -packed show. And we'll get right into it, you know, in terms of our our pregame session here.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : I'll say it before I put you on the spot here, Tim. It's been a fun week, right? like we We dropped that episode one. on Monday. Oh. I don't think we really know what to expect. it Like, you know, how many people would listen other than family and friends? Would anybody listen?
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : and we've we've got a lot of feedback we got a lot of tweets and comments and it's it's been really cool right like i don't know you know I think we wanted to share a couple ones that we really liked in terms of that matter to us a bit, if you want to lead us off there.
Tim Linehan: Yeah, I would just say thank you to everybody. We were blown away, really. I had zero expectations. I thought we were just talking into an abyss. And next thing you know, we look up and it seems like people really took to it. So we're going to keep it rolling.
Tim Linehan: The one tweet that really... Uh, got things going was from Eric Hofstess. Tuesday morning. you know Up until that point, Monday is just like you know our dads, our friends from our college text chain giving the lesson.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : Everyone had to listen, right?
Tim Linehan: Yeah, people that you we force to. And then next thing you know. Eric tweets. Gave this a listen on the way to work. This has potential to be really good. I'd recommend the 86 or so BC Hoops fans left that they should listen.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : Great line by him at the end of that as well.
Tim Linehan: Yeah, I mean it's like exactly kind of the point we were talking about. There's not – There's more of us than we think, right? But we know that we've lost a lot of people in the years. And it was just so cool because to have someone with the cachet that Eric has in the BC.
Tim Linehan: sports community to put that out there early. just Very appreciative of that. and to get the ball rolling and and and really got kind of the juices flowing and excited about, wait, maybe this, maybe this might go somewhere.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : Yeah, and it's cool. like For those that don't know, Eric Hoffs, he doesn't do it anymore. but Basically, he was like A .J. Black before A .J. Black was running Eagle Insider. Eric Hoffs just ran Eagle Action, and he wrote, and he was a... basically a beat like a reporter writer for bc basketball and bc football he stepped away from it But I recognized the name right away when it came through. And I was like, oh, if he listened to it and kind of found it on his own, that's awesome. and
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : Yeah, it was cool. It was cool to see that someone just discovered discovered the pod, listened to it, and thought it had potential, right? you know When we do this thing, like... we all i don't know we all have our little quirks and things up and hobbies that we like right and ours just happens to be the fact that we follow a basketball team that hasn't made the tournament in 17 years right so you know i don't know
Tim Linehan: Longest longest running Drought. of the power four if you're keeping track at home.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : Right.
Tim Linehan: And if you want to throw if you want to throw the Big East in...
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : you know So I don't know. what
Tim Linehan: It's just DePaul, right? So DePaul doesn't count. So it's the longest drought. of the big five conferences.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : And that's that's our hobby, right?
Tim Linehan: But... I digress.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : So, yeah, like I don't know what we did in a previous life to to deserve this, but that's what we love.
Tim Linehan: Yeah.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : And when you share something that you love. to like a big audience and just put yourself out there. it's It's a little terrifying. You're a little like, all right, were we good at this? Did anyone care? Did anyone listen? and Yeah, it was cool like throughout the week to get different ages of people tweeting at us and talking about how they liked it, people talking about memories of BC basketball. and it was it was just It was affirming and heartening to get. CJ Gerondo was another tweet.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : that we got. He wrote, you know, can already tell based on the first episode that this is going to be a good one. BC basketball hasn't deserved a dedicated podcast in close to 20 years. I think with Luke Murray at the helm, they will again. right and i think that's the hope like we're like there's maybe a little momentum here like Let's let's put it out there and see what happens. And I think there are. more than 86 BC basketball fans. as We found out this week that...
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : that are excited about this season.
Tim Linehan: Yup. It was just, uh, A roller coaster week and exciting and got me excited to do this tonight.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : And one more note on this little pregame session here. We got all the texts and all the messages about my phone going off, right? That was my fault.
Tim Linehan: Yeah. So that's that's probably the best messages and best feedback that we got. It was your phone for sure.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : 100 % on brand.
Tim Linehan: Yeah.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : My phone went off at least twice during episode one. And you know, just a reminder, I guess we are. Not experts on this thing right like a bit of a hot mess me if I'm the IT guy like we got We got issues. I'm the producer in a way here in terms of some of the IT work. You're the social media guru. I mean, this is It's a bit of a...
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : a dicey operation.
Tim Linehan: Yeah. where teachers and... coaches, mediocre, you know, freshmen and JV basketball coaches. so this is the yeah the The media piece is all new to us.
Tim Linehan: If my son comes down here crying or throwing up, that that's liable to happen at some point too, or my daughter.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : Yeah, we just did bedtime
Tim Linehan: so
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : I'm just at bedtime. I'm ready to roll. My phone's off, right? so all right i think it's that's enough of the little pregame but although i should say we want to do that part we want to do that to start each episode like so tweet at us
Tim Linehan: Yep.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : you know instagram us what like do all that stuff like hit us up anyway that you want make fun of us what was good what was bad and we'll we'll start each show kind of shouting some people out i think it's a fun way to get people involved
Tim Linehan: Yeah, the excitement is... Like. legit palpable and it's because we haven't lost any games yet. So let's let's get it going here.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : Undefeated baby. Undefeated so far. All right, so let's get into game time. All right, game time tonight is a real focus on Luke Murray. and we we've talked about why we liked him but let's dive into some specifics let's dive into some numbers about why we like him so much and then from there We'll do the roster breakdown for you as well. We did some homework, so let's get into it. Tim, you you had some awesome Murray stuff. Let's go.
Tim Linehan: Yeah, so... First of all, You said it last time. He was high on our wish list and we didn't really believe it. And then once once it came to fruition.
Tim Linehan: It was like, oh my gosh, this is really happening. I think it's safe to say there are not many. people who did not go to UConn. that have watched them more than me and you have, right? Like we have watched so much UConn just from.
Tim Linehan: my St. John's connection and just from the brand of basketball that they play. They're on TV all the time. If you just took Hurley's antics out and just watched UConn play, it is it's.
Tim Linehan: what basketball is all about, right? Like I teach my daughter, I teach my son, you want to be on a team where you're creating for yourself, but then you're always creating for somebody else. And that's all they're constantly doing at all times.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : Most unselfish team in the country when you watch them play.
Tim Linehan: Yeah, people don't. Play like them. like You watch everybody does a highball screen and and they there's there's not like the intricacies and it's all Luke Murray. He's the architect of it.
Tim Linehan: you know I made a little bit of a comparison to Belmont. I'm hoping maybe BC can channel like Belmont. We're not going to have the talent that UConn is going to have. We're not going to have five stars. We're not going to have NBA players. but I know. There's some. college basketball sickos out there. and Belmont it was like X and O, beauty like just beautiful.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : Beautiful basketball.
Tim Linehan: They have one of the most creative sets ever called Panic.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : Yeah.
Tim Linehan: We've seen that one before on your algorithm. And it's just like. I think that's maybe the model where we don't have the... the top hundred, although we're working on that, players. but We have the design and we have the system and systems matter. College basketball coach matters so much. having the system, having the correct things in place.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : Just how good.
Tim Linehan: Bye -bye.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : Give us some of the numbers, right? And when you say he's the architect, right? Like, we don't want to take away from Hurley. Like, we know that Hurley hurley' is the head head of that snake. We know that. But in terms of the architect, Murray really... you know you're going to get into it he was the offensive coordinator his last few years at uconn so when we say architect we're really talking about that offense that he that uconn runs murray is credited with I don't want to say the creation of that, but really like he's the head of that. He ran their offense. So get into some of the numbers with him. just to Tell the listeners how good that UConn offense was under Mari leading it.
Tim Linehan: Yeah, Hurley. I'm going to have to geek out with some Ken Palm numbers if people don't know what Ken Palm is. right ken pom Ken Pomeroy is the basketball analytics guy, and he has office offensive efficiency ratings. And Hurley.
Tim Linehan: was improving UConn early and making progress. And then Luke came around in 21 -22. And at the end of that year, they were 22nd.
Tim Linehan: in offensive efficiency, which is great. They lost in the first round. Then they name. Luke offensive coordinator in the 22 -23 season. They get.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : So he gets a title change. Okay.
Tim Linehan: He gets a title change.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : Yep.
Tim Linehan: It seems like they... Give him the keys to the car or so much, they say, right? and They are the third. rated offensively efficient team in the country. They also win the national title that year.
Tim Linehan: I remember watching those games. They went on a dry spell And they lost like five out of six in December and January, which I'm not willing on on BC coming up here. But part of me is thinking like.
Tim Linehan: This is an intricate thing. This is a detailed piece. This isn't high pick and roll and fade to the corner for a three. There's like lots of moving parts. And they went through some growing pains and then they just caught fire. and i like was we remember watching it in late February, like this is the best team. They're just running everything correctly. They're going to, they're going to do it. They want they were only a four seed and they won the tournament with ease.
Tim Linehan: And then they go back to back. They're the first number one rated offense in 23 -24. That team was dominant. That team was absolutely stacked. and You just see that right Luke is in charge and they go third and first with two national titles. Now, of course, it's Hurley's team, right? I don't want to take. away from Hurley.
Tim Linehan: but We watched some of the early Hurley years and it was kind of muck. You remember that?
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : Yeah, I just feel like... The eyeball test, like the and the numbers, the Ken Palm numbers are awesome, and they back up exactly what you're you're watching if you ever watch the UConn offense under Mari. the the the the last you know number three in the country, number one in the country, the most efficient offense in the country.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : Yukon before Marie. It was improving and better, but they were definitely like...
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : Ball heavy in terms of dribble dribble dribble and they had some great players and they were they're getting better The thing with the Murray offense is it's just so much off the ball movement that that's what just stands out to you is that like, I just feel like you said in today's game, everything is starting now with a high. high pick and roll. And you just got these guards, guards who are just pounding the ball and then creating for others, or they're playing really fast and getting fast break stuff. The Murray offense is this deliberate offense that is so much, it's predicated on so much off the ball movement. And you said intricate passing and generating good looks, unselfish play, like the ball, like five guys are touching the ball. Five guys are moving.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : it's It's really fun to watch. And UConn didn't play that way until Murray got there.
Tim Linehan: No, they absolutely did not. Yeah, it's like everything you want in a basketball team. What people need to realize. Murray's And he didn't do it. you know Everyone wins the press conference and they say, we're going to play fast and we're going to do this. and They're not going to play fast. UConn has been the slowest pace, 300 plus. There's about 350, 360 teams in D1.
Tim Linehan: They are 300 plus in pace four out of the last five years. so it's
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : That's a wild stat.
Tim Linehan: It's not going to be run and gun. It is they walk it up. and there's a Pass to the wing, and then there's a random pass to a big man in the corner. He does a dribble handoff. opposite misdirection, back screen, ghost screen, flare, and next thing you know.
Tim Linehan: your wing is wide open for a three, but at the same time, your big is rolling for an alley -oop if it's there.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : There's multiple actions in everything that they run.
Tim Linehan: And. Yeah, misdirection. It's like... I... I'm not like a huge... 49ers fan, but like the 49ers, like Shanahan, it's smoke and mirrors. It's like smoke and mirrors every time. And you wind up with like a little dump off to George Kittle for eight yard pass. It's almost like that where there's just so much going on that eventually somebody's open. no matter what.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : What's cool too is like that We just watched Earl Grant's teams who who were slow. They played slow. But Murray's team, UConn under Murray, they're even slower. pace -wise. General Grant squads.
Tim Linehan: Yeah.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : The thing about that, though, is I watched a ton of Earl Graham basketball. And I feel like some. People listen to the podcast and be like, oh no, we're getting more slow. It doesn't, it's crazy when you, when you watch the slow offense sometimes and it's dribble dominant, then it's like, Oh, it's brutal. The Murray offense on a Yukon. Yes, it's slow, but it's, it's so smooth that it doesn't feel slow. If that makes sense. Like it just. it looks great it just feels thoughtful and deliberate and like there's
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : intent on every cut in every screen. So I don't think it that the pit The tempo is slow, but it's still beautiful to watch.
Tim Linehan: Yeah, and you don't hear people like... a lot of We're not the only people that have watched UConn the last five years. You don't hear people like, oh, they're a tough wash. No, it's the opposite. I got to shout out shout out Mike Galtieri with his great.
Tim Linehan: coverage of ACC Media Day. He got j bill he got Jay Billis.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : Right. right
Tim Linehan: And Jay Billis says it's beautiful basketball. And that's like that's the simple the most simple thing here. is It's just a beautiful brand of basketball. so don't put it on the shoes but gritty and pretty maybe
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : Ooh.
Tim Linehan: Can we be gritty and pretty?
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : I like it Look at you.
Tim Linehan: Yeah.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : gritty and pretty. I like that. Yeah.
Tim Linehan: Eh eh.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : I mean, because Hey, it's going to be pretty. It's definitely going to be pretty. The Gritty, I think you...
Tim Linehan: Maybe not at first. It might not be pretty at first.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : Yeah. we'll have to see right it's gonna be a whole new system in terms of all these new players trying to learn it but when this thing's humming It it looks great. And it's not just at UConn. I know you had some good numbers on Xavier, too, when Murray was an assistant there under Chris Mack.
Tim Linehan: Yeah, so... you know if you If you look quickly at the the four years at... at Yukon, five years at Yukon. We know he was with – some of us know he was with Hurley at Wagner and at URI, right? Comes back with UConn. But earlier at Xavier with Chris Mack.
Tim Linehan: 18th ranked offense and a two seed. 29th ranked offense and made the Elite Eight. And then in 17, 18, they were the eighth ranked offense and were a one seed in the tournament.
Tim Linehan: And that's at Xavier. uh with mac and Those were fun teams. I was paying attention to those teams with St. John's and with Villanova. but like it's it's This isn't a mythical, like, oh, an overrated thing.
Tim Linehan: People are blowing this up too much. like there's There's data behind it. Your eyeballs see it. it's just the exception
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : good Good offense follows Luke Murray where he winds up.
Tim Linehan: Yeah, the excitement the excitement is justified, right? This this isn't some guy like... every talking head raved about the hire like that's not it's That doesn't always happen, right?
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : So major success offensively at Xavier, major success when he gets reunited with Hurley at UConn. Love that Hurley wanted him back, by the way, at UConn, right? Like he had that little hiatus away from. uh hurley and then hurley made a point to hire murray architect of the offense are basically that you know in many ways gets uconn going on and this dynasty they're about to be on right so
Tim Linehan: Right. I mean, UConn's been to three out of the last four Final Fours. with Murray running the offense and their one down year. They lost in the second round. to Florida. who won it all. So like.
Tim Linehan: They won it back -to -back and then they lost to the eventual champion Florida in the second round And then last year they lost in the final to Michigan. So it's just an insane run. It's offensively driven.
Tim Linehan: But Hurley makes sure they bust their butt on defense.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : Sure.
Tim Linehan: So, you know, defense will be a question mark that we'll talk about.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : The other thing too is like... We watch a lot of college basketball, so I don't want to be hyperbolic. and and and totally overstate this, but nobody plays offense like UConn. Every time I would watch UConn play basketball, I was thinking to myself, why can nobody else play like this? It's so unique. It's such a unique system.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : And, you know, it's sort of in. in a nod to the title of our podcast right the tight flex talk about a unique system I think it's really good for a school like BC who, as you mentioned, we may not get.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : the five stars all the time, to have an identity. to have a unique system that's that's pretty particular to the school. That's when BC's had success. You know, under Skinner, that's what it was. that That tight flex, nobody ran that. And now they're going to be running the Murray offense.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : I just like that there's going to be an identity and a system in place.
Tim Linehan: You got an identity, you recruit to the identity, right? And then with BC, there's going to be a little bit of a money ball. Like we said, we're not spending. $25 million dollars like Duke is. But it's, you know, you're looking for these unselfish players like Hurley, not Hurley, like Murray said at media day.
Tim Linehan: And. Yep. it's it's not going to be It's not Alabama. They're not chucking a million threes. They take a decent amount of threes. They took the exact same amount of threes the last two years in a row.
Tim Linehan: I went and looked at the last two years. They take 24 threes a game, which is a lot.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : Minus. It's a manageable number though. It's not crazy.
Tim Linehan: But like. it's it's under the average teams are jacking like crazy now right and they make 34 exactly the last two years and we've heard luke is analytically driven and a little bit of a stickler to this so those are the numbers 24 threes a game and they made 34%.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : Sure.
Tim Linehan: And the last two years at UConn, they were the exact same numbers back to back. So that's something for people to keep an eye on. Like that's what they're going to run. I'm assuming that's what they're going to run.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : Sure.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : And I said this to you, I said this to you off air too, in terms of.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : Numbers aside. More back to the eyeball test. watching UConn and watching their offense. when they need to dial up a play to get a shot at the right time. It's uncanny how good they are good they are at doing that.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : how many times you come out of timeout when you're watching college basketball bc in the past and the teams don't get a shot teams don't get the shot that they want it's not the right play it's like if uconn's down three they They dial up something to get a three -pointer for one of their good three -point shooters. If UConn's down two, they get the ball down low and go to the hoop. like really really technical or like a technician almost in terms of the way they they do their offense and so getting the right shot at the right time, I think it's going to be refreshing to watch at BC.
Tim Linehan: And that's not just a BC knock. No college basketball team runs stuff well at the end of the game. And that's why a lot of coaches don't even call timeout anymore. Right. But it's really a throwback. Like it's almost like a Hoosiers.
Tim Linehan: like The whole world was like, let's go positionless basketball. Let's go read and react. we don't need sets anymore right we need one set here and there and the fact that This is the...
Tim Linehan: New model. Right. Or it's not the model, but the fact that it's the most successful program in the last three years in the whole country. And we have the architect of that.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : Sure.
Tim Linehan: like
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : Pretty cool
Tim Linehan: you're kind of zigging where everybody else is zagging. And now. We just got to see if we have the bodies to do it.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : Right. In terms of style fit in the ACC, I know that he mentioned something at media day. Did you want to touch upon that? what you know You've watched them play in the Big East. Do you think the style is going to work offensively in the ACC, what that might look like?
Tim Linehan: Yeah. So something we've talked about is that. Yeah. There's only one team that gives UConn fits routinely and it's St. John's and it's Patino's.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : Your boys. You're St.
Tim Linehan: It's Patino's defense, right?
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : John.
Tim Linehan: And it's... You know, St. John's plays a way where they foul you every time and force the ref to call that, right? It's like tackle football. St. John's has beaten UConn four of the last five times they've played.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : Physical Big East basketball, right?
Tim Linehan: which is
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : Okay.
Tim Linehan: which is a wild stat, right? And Hurley complains about it, complains how the Big East is reffed. And then they get into the NCAA tournament or they get in the non -league. and they kill everybody.
Tim Linehan: You have short prep, so you've got all this weird misdirection stuff right in the NCAA tournament. They're 18 -3 in the NCAA tournament under Luke.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : Great.
Tim Linehan: And then not.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : step
Tim Linehan: In the non -conference under Luke, I'm saying under Luke, right?
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : Since Mari's a coach. that Yeah.
Tim Linehan: Under Luke's offense.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : and If Hurley ever listened to this podcast.
Tim Linehan: Yeah.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : you'd probably find our address and hunt us down. like
Tim Linehan: Please, this would be great.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : where you know We don't want to take away – we love Hurley.
Tim Linehan: It would be great.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : We love Hurley as a coach, not you know not the antics. But, yeah, we're not trying to say Hurley's not a good coach. But since Murray became – you know on their staff 18 -3 in the NCAA tournament, that's a great number.
Tim Linehan: Yeah. Okay. And 68 and 11.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : Done.
Tim Linehan: in the non -con so they win 86 of their non -conference games and nobody schedules harder they schedule so hard
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : They're hard to They're hard to prepare for. that right That's the thing. You don't see teams play like this. They're hard to prepare for. So.
Tim Linehan: Yeah, and the ACC I'm not going to call the ACC soft but We've said this before. The ACC is Duke and everybody else. We've got some numbers for the next episode where we're going to. break down the ACC.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : So.
Tim Linehan: and you know. it's it's It's not the Big East in terms of the physicality. so now Even Luke said it at media day, the style might fit the ACC even better.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : The ACC is not as physical as the Big East.
Tim Linehan: So.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : There's way more player movement. So I think that will help.
Tim Linehan: Yep. And the team that used to slug it out was Virginia, and Virginia doesn't play that style anymore.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : Well, speaking of play. You need players to play it in the system. Right. So why don't we move to the homework that we did? and And honestly, we did some homework here. Right. As two teachers, as you mentioned, two teachers and coaches. I think we we would be proud of ourselves if we were the students in this thing. Like we were diving into these players. We dove into this.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : These portal additions, basically an entirely new roster. right So what we want to do is just give you a primer on each player so you have a sense of who Murray brought in and and what the talent might look like that's actually running. you know that's going to be part of this system, the cogs of this system, shall we say.
Tim Linehan: Yeah, I mean, this was true homework, enjoyable homework, right? But this was homework. These are new guys, at a whole new team, 12, 13 new guys, one guy coming back, right?
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : Alright, so... Yeah, totally new. Let's try to run through this. you know what We did our homework. We're going to try to move quickly, but also give you some of some of the numbers that we felt like were interested interesting. We got to start with Money Williams, right? I mean, just the name alone.
Tim Linehan: Name alone, and then... the buzz and then the swag and you know Luke brings him to media day, so you know he's an important piece. And from all accounts at the scrimmages, at everything.
Tim Linehan: He's the guy, right? So you got to start with money.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : Yeah, he he he was, I would say, the the headliner in terms of the Portal editions, right? So I can give you you know some of the basics, right? He averaged 20 a night. 20 points, four boards, four assists at Montana. He was at Montana the last three years, okay?
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : But I do want to go a little bit inside the numbers with this guy. So he's 6 '4". He's about 210. He's big. We watch him in terms of watching him play. He's a lefty. He's big. He almost looks like a football player playing basketball and he's a guard too. So he's got good footwork. He can get to the rim. I think that's going to translate in the ACC. He's not an explosive athlete. Like he's not playing above the rim. He's more of, I would say. A basketball IQ guy that's a good athlete. He knows how to play, good footwork, finishes with both hands, that type of stuff.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : as i mentioned the
Tim Linehan: he's he's He's a playoff two feet guy, right? He's a Jalen Brunson.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : All right.
Tim Linehan: He compared himself to Jalen Brunson in a humble way on the Instagram.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : Yep.
Tim Linehan: like that's That's his game, right?
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : Yep.
Tim Linehan: Cerebral.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : Totally.
Tim Linehan: playing off two feet, making the right play.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : and not a chucker. like I know he dropped 20 a night at Montana. He is not a chucker. very Very willing passer. He had a game last year when I looked at all the the numbers. right He had games last year with 11 assists. He had a game with 15 dimes, 15 assists. He also had a game with 10 rebounds. so he He's a basketball player. He's not just a scorer. He improved every single year at Montana.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : I love that he shoots 84 % from the foul line. He shot 34 % from the three -point line. But he's not just a three -point shooter. He scores at all three levels. Get to the foul line, too. I thought that was huge.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : you know So a guy that can get to the foul line, I think that's another transferable skill. He averages close to seven free throws a game, so he attacks it.
Tim Linehan: That's got to be like that's got be that herky -jerky two feet, right? That that that has to translate.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : 100%.
Tim Linehan: He's at Montana, so let's be real.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : And then. Yeah.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : I did the P4.
Tim Linehan: What about the comp?
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : Chris Bell. Right. The P4 numbers. So games that he played last year against P4 opponents. Right. He played Stanford. 19 points five assists seven boards Played UNLV, which I'm going to count as part of the P4 basketball. He went 30 points, 8 assists, 2 boards. Played Texas A and &M, went 22 points, 7 assists, 5 boards. So you see the pattern here. He had one clunker against Louisville where he went 4 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists. But when he played against good competition, his game...
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : basically traveled up. The last thing I want to say about him that I really loved to In his conference tournament game, he took his team he took Montana to the finals. He he went 40 points in the first round, 32 points in the second round, and then he had 19 points in the last game. like Just kind of a dog. like just showed out when it mattered most, which I loved.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : I like him. I think he's. I think he's... Probably going to be the best player on the team is my guess in terms of just from an offensive. you know and And we were talking to offense guys, right? we we We didn't dive too much into the the the defensive metrics on all these guys. But offensively, I think he's really skilled. I think he's going to be a top player on this basketball team.
Tim Linehan: Yeah, he is. I really like 84 % from the line, right? So if he's going to get to the line, he's going to drill them. I like who else was going after him, Missouri and Santa Clara.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : Yep.
Tim Linehan: two legit coaches so if bc's beating out them I think those guys, like Dennis Gates, right? Almost the head coach.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : Yeah, right
Tim Linehan: And Santa c Clara is a buzzy buzzy program, right?
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : Be safe.
Tim Linehan: So I like that. We won out on there. and uh Yeah, the defense. I'm not going to pretend like I know the defense. There's not a lot of defensive film out there on these guys. They're not showing them. you know, slide and cutting off on the help defense.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : Yeah, the highlights are offense.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : The the film's offense. i think we should just as a blanket statement say defense is It remains to be seen. That's going to be a question mark on Mario. Let's see what's see what he does. UConn played man -to -man primarily. I'm expecting that, but that's going to be a wait -and -see thing.
Tim Linehan: Yeah, I have a little... I wonder... about his usage. The UConn model is not. A ball dominant. dribble, dribble, dribble, dribble.
Tim Linehan: point guard uh they've had great point guards right but uh even stephen castle right like he's he's not He wasn't s smashing the ball around. So it'll see. i' He had some great quotes about how he's learning through Murray. so
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : Yeah, he's playing off the ball a little bit more.
Tim Linehan: We need...
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : You're right. His usage was through the roof at Montana. He had the ball in his hands all the time. He's not going to have that at BC. You know, there's going to be different guys that are touching it. So he's going to have to learn to play with less usage. Hopefully that makes his turnovers go down a little bit turnover prone.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : He does have an a positive assist to turnover ratio, but he did average about four. four turnovers a game and just about five assists the game. so Love to see the turnover numbers go down and the usage go down a bit in Murray's offense.
Tim Linehan: We believe in him. If this season is going to be anything that we hope for, money's got to be the man, and he's going to do it for us, right?
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : Love it. Tell me about Jacob Furphy.
Tim Linehan: All right. Furphy is the other invitee to media day with Luke, which is a telling sign.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : Yep.
Tim Linehan: Furphy comes over from UConn. uh was was Did not play really. meaningful minutes last year.
Tim Linehan: He is not related to Johnny Furphy, who I assumed was his brother in the NBA, who was at Kansas for a year or two. They're cousins. He's from Tasmania. He's also a lefty.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : So is yeah right sos Williams. I should have mentioned that. So two lefties.
Tim Linehan: No, you did. You did mention it.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : Okay. Yeah.
Tim Linehan: We got to channel our Tyrese Rice and just have just... lefties bombing threes and playing great.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : How good was Tyrese Rice? Just side note. Just...
Tim Linehan: I mean... The North Carolina game, I remember being in Hoboken for St. Paddy's Day and like not paying attention because he was scoring 100 points in the first half.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : Absolute stud. Kind of an underappreciated player at BCM, in my my opinion. Back to Furphy, though.
Tim Linehan: Back to Furphy, the lefties, right? It's a beautiful shot. It's an absolutely beautiful shot. It's clean. He's from Tasmania, so I am... A new hobby of mine is watching Australian U19 film.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : Sure your wife is proud.
Tim Linehan: Yeah, it's I didn't think I'd be here at 41, but. I am here now.
Tim Linehan: uh And it was actually.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : Keep learning. Deep down enjoyed it, I'm sure.
Tim Linehan: Yeah, well, I'm channeling my my inner Luke, right? Like this is this is what Luke – this is Luke's thing. So if we're going to –
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : studies international basketball at hours all hours of the night.
Tim Linehan: Yeah, if we're going to ride or die with Luke, then we got to watch some U19 FIBA film. And actually right away. It all looked like UConn stuff. And it was designed for him. And he was the dude flying around off staggers and coming off coming up elevators and the flares. It was like a little bit Cam Spencer -y. is what I would say. He's bigger than Cam Spencer. Great touch around the rim with both hands.
Tim Linehan: No idea how his defense is, but he is another cerebral. smart.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : Skilled. Yep.
Tim Linehan: Pace. Right? IQ player. Rothstein said he lost weight. They said money lost weight. Everybody loses weight, but you know those are still good signs, getting fit, getting in shape. But I'm really high on both these guys. if they're going to If they're going to have a good season, the fact that he came with them from UConn I think is a great sign.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : Totally agree.
Tim Linehan: And. High on Furphy.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : And I think they can both they can both play the one in spots. They could both play the two at spots. They could even probably both play the three. I mean, Furphy's a little taller than Williams, but they're they're both good size. so for guards.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : But again, that seems to be the theme, cerebral, smart.
Tim Linehan: Yep.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : basketball IQ guys with a positive, you know, positive like assist to turnover ratios, guys that know how to play the game, which makes sense if you're going to be in a system that's going to be as complicated and complex as Murray's.
Tim Linehan: Yep.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : All right, a marney's Armani Ziegler. Take care. for a minute here. and jump in i know you watch a little bit of them too so this kid's 6 '4 190 he This is a kid who he started, basically, he started at St. Peter's, did a couple years there, and then he went to Ball State. So BC is his third school.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : He projects as a one or a two, another guy with a positive assist to turnover ratio, sensing a pattern here, right? watching him. Junkyard Dog. Like. kind of i love that your comp of him a little Jermaine Watson for BC fans.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : basically a do -it -all versatile 6 '4 190 guard who i think can play the one can play the two rebounds well from the guard Spot. I would classify him as a scorer, not necessarily a pure shooter, although the shot looks fine. Shot 33 % from three.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : A couple of numbers on him. He can fill it up. like For the year, he averaged close to 11 points a game, but he had nights where he had 28. He had nights where he had 30. so he He can do it all. He's a bit of a stat stuffer. Ten points, three assists, five boards, a steal and a half. That's what he did.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : Not as efficient as some of the other guys, 40 % shooting. 33 from three, as I mentioned, 77 % from the foul line. Again, a lot of these guys shoot foul shots get at a high clip, which we like. New York City kid, tough guard.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : Reminded me of like a Like a. I don't know, an old school Big East guard. minute. Maybe it possibly a fan favorite to energy guy. I think he'll get a lot of minutes.
Tim Linehan: Yeah. His brother, Zakai Ziegler, was at Tennessee for the last 10 years.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : Right.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : Yeah. you He was good, too.
Tim Linehan: Eh.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : I like that.
Tim Linehan: and And when they landed Armani, I was like, okay, i know we know exactly what he's going to be. And then I watched some of the film. his shot. is not broken like his brother's was. His brother was like the ultimate college floor general with an ugly jump shot, awesome point guard, played defense. So I'm hoping Armani has the better jump shot.
Tim Linehan: Plays defense. just like his big brother did. like you said new york city tough guard i did a little homework he's from Amityville, Long Island.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : Yep.
Tim Linehan: I'm from Long Island, so let's go, Armani.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : There we go. There we go.
Tim Linehan: And then when you said Big East Guard, I was like, all right, let's let's do a little digging. same high school. as, this is a bit of a deep cut if people are following, but Posh Alexander and Dylan Wusu.
Tim Linehan: Those are two New York guys who won't played at St. John's and then wound up transferring both. Around the Big East but like grinders like defensive grinders that are kind of high energy.
Tim Linehan: So I think Ziegler. Possible fan favorite. I saw one clip where he went up and just banged on somebody. and I don't know this.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : Yeah, he looks like one of the better athletes is that they brought in too.
Tim Linehan: Yeah, I'm not sure they have a lot of that. The Jermaine, I just thought of Jermaine because Jermaine wasn't a one, he wasn't a two. He just. busted his ass and did what was needed. and
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : Jermaine Watson, another another name from BC past who was a really good role player.
Tim Linehan: Fun.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : if Ziegler could be close to that.
Tim Linehan: Yeah.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : wed We would love that.
Tim Linehan: Fun fact, Tim and I lived on the Yellow House on Foster Street. If you want to read up on that, you might want to, but it's out there.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : 315 Foster Street.
Tim Linehan: Yep.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : All right. If you know, you know that one. The next guard that Marty brought in is JB Frankel. So he's a senior. he His previous stop is Northeastern. Bit of a sleeper. I think he's going to be a roll guy off the bench.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : Looking at some of his film, watching watching it a bit, again, diving into Northeastern film. I mean, we are we are grinding here, right? Love it.
Tim Linehan: that was that's That's pretty big of you. That's a good job.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : I mean, it wasn't, what as you said, the... yeah the australian under 19 stuff wow dedication but frankel watching him at northeastern he can shoot it so shot 38 from three as a sophomore dipped a bit last year to down to 30 northeastern had a bit of a tough year last year i chalked it up that number maybe just to that the team wasn't quite as good
Tim Linehan: Yeah.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : But he's played in Northeastern. It was a pretty good program under Bill Cohen. So he started 30 games during his time at Northeastern. He played about 20 minutes. a night last year. You know, 57 assists, 28 turnovers, 81 % last year, 81 % career free throw shooter.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : so I like him. I think i think he's a maybe he'll be on the floor at the end of the game sometimes as another ball handler. He might come off the bench and hit a couple threes. I think he'll be reliable. The comp I had for him, and I was proud of this, it was this kid, Joey Calcaterra, who...
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : was very good on the 2023 uconn team they won the title and he was just smaller guard off the bench who came in and drilled threes and was like a pain in the ass to play against and i feel like that's what franco might be i think he's gonna play some guys I do think people don't realize that he'll He'll probably play a little bit. I think he's a bit of an... a little bit overlooked in in this portal class.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : I think he'll be off the bench.
Tim Linehan: They're also...
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : Yeah.
Tim Linehan: they're also thin at guard, right? Or it feels like they're kind of thin at guard.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : Then it's hard. Yeah, I just like the free throw shooting and the shooting and the ball handling.
Tim Linehan: So.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : and A little bit of a sleeper. That's my my take on him.
Tim Linehan: And he has experience, right? and and
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : Yep.
Tim Linehan: Uh, We'll see. Rooting for Jay Bay.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : All right, so those are the guards.
Tim Linehan: All right, that's the backcourt, right?
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : Those are the guards, right? in terms of What we think we could play the one who could play the two
Tim Linehan: Alright, now they went. Ham on the wing. Right.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : Here's the deal.
Tim Linehan: They.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : the money the money The money was big to get. The... All the reports to get bigs cost a ton in the portal. so they did they money balled it a little bit i think they were smart he brought in a ton of wings because you probably had a little value there in terms of how far your portal dollars could go so walk walk us through some of these wings because he brought in a bunch
Tim Linehan: So. If you... paid attention to UConn like we have. Alex Caraban was like, you know. Hurley's son and he's just like his favorite guy and a lot of their stuff revolved around
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : Massachusetts kid, by the way. Alex Gariband, Massachusetts.
Tim Linehan: A lot of their stuff revolved around another Massachusetts guy BC didn't get.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : That's where it's from.
Tim Linehan: Is that what you're saying?
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : Yes, basically. Exactly.
Tim Linehan: yeah Yeah. all those prep schools that we keep mentioning that. are going to start coming Luke's way, right?
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : Hey. well Talented. One of these days we're going to get one of those guys.
Tim Linehan: Yep.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : Keep going.
Tim Linehan: So Caravan's the piece, like he is. this three slash four wing that's moving around can shoot threes but then also needs to be tough and rebound and defend And he's like the ultimate.
Tim Linehan: fourth banana. I actually think he's overrated somewhat in a funny in a funny way because he's been on these great teams, but he's just a do -everything guy. And I think Luke took a bunch of swings to try to find one.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : Yeah, he would. I mean, Caravan was the face of those UConn teams in a lot of ways. Maybe he wasn't the best player, but like he was the I don't know. I just feel like he was the guts and the glue of those teams. So, yeah, it makes sense that he'd be trying to recruit guys in that mold.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : so
Tim Linehan: Yeah. And it's like, you have to be a stretch four kind of, but also who bangs and rebounds and cares and dives on the floor. So like normally stretch fours are soft, right? So it's like a. All right, well here's our first guy. Andreeja. Bukemirovic.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : I gave you that name, just so you know, that you had to do all the fun.
Tim Linehan: uh Yeah.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : i
Tim Linehan: Heh heh. He's going to be Buick.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : I pronounced that Buick. There we go. Okay.
Tim Linehan: He's just going to be Buick. He got some buzz at the open scrimmage. I watched some film on him, 6 '7", 200 pounds from Serbia. His last two years were at UT Martin.
Tim Linehan: 36 % from three last year. Only shoots 57 % from the line, which is an odd combo.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : Yeah, it's an outlier too in this class.
Tim Linehan: that I don't. i don't I don't love. But. 36 % from three. We keep looking at what these guys at smaller schools did against the power four. He played UNLV as well and dropped 23.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : Was UNLV just horrible?
Tim Linehan: He played.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : Did everyone just smoke UNLV?
Tim Linehan: I don't know. we're going to I don't know. They're in the Mountain West. and you know The committee loves the Mountain West, so they can't be that bad.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : right
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : everyone Everyone's going for 20 against UNLV. Okay. All right, what else did you do?
Tim Linehan: Yeah. 22 against Florida State. So given the opportunity, I'm i'm good with 22 against Florida State.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : Yeah.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : So he did pretty well against big teams.
Tim Linehan: uh
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : Okay. Yeah.
Tim Linehan: You watch the film and he's lean, right? Didn't didn you see that?
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : Really thin.
Tim Linehan: out
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : Really.
Tim Linehan: He's lean and then he put up. 7 .8 rebounds a game. So I love that. I don't know if that's going to translate, but at least it's in his nature, right? Rebounding is just a want to, I think, for the most part.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : Eight rebounds a night is no joke. I was surprised at that number too.
Tim Linehan: Right. he's playing a lot of directional schools as we call it right like Northwest Missouri State and
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : UT Martin.
Tim Linehan: Southeast Arkansas, right?
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : Yeah.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : Yeah, he played at UT Martin.
Tim Linehan: but
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : Got it. Okay. Yeah.
Tim Linehan: Yeah. But, can he do it in Can he do it in the ACC?
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : So the competition.
Tim Linehan: The competition is going to be, everybody's leveled up, right?
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : We'll have to see.
Tim Linehan: This whole team could be viewed as a mid -major all -star team. Everybody's leveling up minus Furphy.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : And he didn't really play at UConn, so right.
Tim Linehan: Right.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : yeah
Tim Linehan: So I i think Buick's a piece of the puzzle. He's old, he's experienced, and he can shoot. So Luke's going to like that. Only one assist a game. So he's out there to shoot and he's not.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : Okay. Yeah.
Tim Linehan: going to pass and that's all right because you know but he's he's the first wing that has some intrigue. i I don't know. I think he there's a chance he starts and there's a chance he's the eighth man.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : Yeah. They'll be on the rotation.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : Okay. We'll have to see. Remains to be seen, but I do, I have seen. I agree. Thin, but I do like the stroke. He did shoot the ball well in the clips I was watching, so we'll have to see you there. Talk to me about...
Tim Linehan: Yep.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : Colby Dugan
Tim Linehan: Colby Dugan, not Dugan. Colby Dugan, exactly.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : Okay.
Tim Linehan: The opposite of Buick, not a rebounder. He is another 6 '7". wing. three slash four. shoots it at 86 % from the line, which is a great number, 34 % from three.
Tim Linehan: He had... Two years at Campbell. And at Campbell, he was... The man.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : He was good. He was really good at Campbell. yeah
Tim Linehan: He was the man, right? So he got to Jack at Campbell. And if you watch his film, he's taken crazy shots. High usage. He's got like this little Dirk one -legged elbow fade.
Tim Linehan: I'm like, this guy's going to be a fan favorite if he starts doing a few of those. But the...
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : Pretty skilled offensive player when I watched the clip.
Tim Linehan: skill He knows what this guy is a basketball player.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : of event
Tim Linehan: He dropped 32 points against North Carolina.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : Yeah.
Tim Linehan: 32 points.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : That is awesome. if you're If you're an absolute psycho like we are and and you know you you go down the rabbit hole of this stuff, you can find. the YouTube clip. of youtube clips of that 32 -point game he had against unc it was awesome like the the highlights and he looks like larry bird like it's a ridiculous game
Tim Linehan: Yeah, he... He's not shy and from reports at the scrimmage. He wasn't shy at the scrimmage either. So I think he's gonna go and get his and you know sometimes you need those guys that are gonna do that He then went to Charleston and was injury riddled.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : Yeah, it wasn't as good there was it? Yeah
Tim Linehan: We're not just going to throw those numbers away, but We're kind of going to throw those numbers away. Injury riddled the year. and We kind of think he's a sleeper, possible sleeper of this team, right?
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : I do. I think if you get sophomore year him. if If he transferred sophomore year. he would have been viewed as like wow the college of charleston was a pretty pretty big get i think that was actually chris mack who brought him in at college of charleston so he his stock is maybe the bc bought a little low on him And I don't know, he's a big kid. He's 6 '7", 230. He can shoot it. He knows how to play basketball. Like I said, he's not a great rebounder, so that's a little bit of a red flag. but i i fairly bullish on him as being a contributor that's going to at least be able to give him some offense.
Tim Linehan: Yep, like same measurables as Caravan. Not the greatest athlete in the world, but same size. and Another bite of the apple, another line in the water.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : Okay? And the next guys. The next guy is my guy, too. The next guy, I think, is... the ultimate sleeper, but go ahead.
Tim Linehan: All right next up from Slovenia
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : Yeah, this is, I love this kid.
Tim Linehan: Zach Smerikar.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : Yeah.
Tim Linehan: I've been practicing smerikar. I hope I didn't screw that up. But 6 '7 again, but this time 195. And. He... His film is the is the best film to watch.
Tim Linehan: It is once again FIBA U19 World Cup film. So I. Double dips there.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : Are you like a premium member at this point?
Tim Linehan: Uh, It's a special package.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : or
Tim Linehan: It's like ESPN plus, plus, plus.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : You're getting in through Disney Plus?
Tim Linehan: uh
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : or What are we doing?
Tim Linehan: Mmm. We'll see. We'll see what Zach is. You told me when he, he's the first guy to commit, right?
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : First, I don't think it was by accident either. first commitment. under the Luke Murray era was this was this guy and Right when it a bunch of names tweeted out, like Finkelstein from 247 had it and was like, this this is a good get for BC. He's the only freshman they brought in. He's 19 years old, as you said, but he's not a... he's not a transfer so he he is a he is a true freshman coming in with international experience obviously but he's the first name that committed yes
Tim Linehan: and there was early buzz on him right like when when the team first met up got together he was kind of the hot name right
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : He was not named because he played great competition. Murray recruited him at UConn, Illinois liked him. I don't know how much Illinois was desperate for him, but the fact that the final four Illinois who's built on. international players wanted this.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : player. i like i like that a lot he's different though than these other wings why
Tim Linehan: Yeah, he is. possibly a point forward coming coming through.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : I think he's going to keep the ball in his hands. I do. Yep.
Tim Linehan: In that tournament, he had 16. points, five rebounds, four assists. That's what he averaged.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : Yeah.
Tim Linehan: So there's a lot of times where he has the ball. And this is a 6 '7 guy with the ball. He can shoot it. But... The three -point percentage compared to these other guys is lower.
Tim Linehan: but he's a scorer.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : Okay.
Tim Linehan: And then I think that he's more athletic. You see him go into the hoop. You see him dunking on people. So I think they have to.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : Yeah, he's playing over the rim in a lot of clips. He is, yeah.
Tim Linehan: Totally. Yeah. I mean, hit his film. And I don't want to compare to these guys, but his film was like, okay, this guy. could really hoop. And the Illinois thing. We have our own thoughts on Underwood, right? but He has done a nice job with these euros recently so if he was on him and came to bc i think that's a great sign
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : Yeah, every scouting report, including the one you wrote up on our little Google Doc here. great feel great playmaker and to have a great feel and be a great playmaker at six seven I love that. I can't remember the last time BC's had somebody like that. I think he.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : has a chance to be a really good player at bc i i don't know if it will pop right away we'll have to see if it translates right away, but he's a really intriguing prospect.
Tim Linehan: Yeah.
Tim Linehan: And it's cool that you're 19, right, in your college age, in this day and age, as I root for St. John's and their 23 -year -old European professionals.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : I know. I know it is nice to actually have a freshman.
Tim Linehan: It's nice to be 19.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : I know. It is.
Tim Linehan: Yeah.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : He's the only well, they did bring in another kid in that we named Jordan, Jordan, g Jordan Gee, but he's a little bit more of. an unknown this is like the true freshman that they're maybe banking on so yeah we'll have to see what happens with him i i i like him though i like the profile of the player
Tim Linehan: Definitely. Alright, one more wing is Ernest Shelton. Ernest Sheldon is in an exciting. piece of the puzzle. Six, five. He's more of a two slash three. He's only 180 pounds. he is i i'm from a suburb of philly now it's where i live He's Philadelphia's own. He went to Father Judge.
Tim Linehan: He played D2 ball for a bit, and then he had...
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : He's a cool story, with this this guy. i like this I like Shelton. I think he's a sneaky good pickup. Cool story with this D2 background, too.
Tim Linehan: Yep, D2 background to Merrimack. And if our hoop heads are out there. Merrimack is coached by...
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : I watched so much Merrimack basketball in. February, because I was thinking he was an XBC coach, Gallo.
Tim Linehan: He was the next coach, yeah.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : Didn't get any job, kind of odd. and Maybe this cycle he will, but I watch... way too much Merrimack basketball and
Tim Linehan: Yeah.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : We are we are good fathers and husbands right other than we we watch a lot of basketball but we
Tim Linehan: Yeah, Merrimack might be where your wife draws the line, maybe.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : you know.
Tim Linehan: Australia, U19.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : We might have to reassess a few things as we talk out loud through these pods here, but we I did watch a lot of... Mary Mac basketball. And I've really.
Tim Linehan: All right, well, wait till you hear this.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : Let's go.
Tim Linehan: Gallo's known for this a bit of an outrageous system. But Shelton shot 35 % from three and 85 % from the line. So great numbers.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : I love the free shooting.
Tim Linehan: on
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : Yeah.
Tim Linehan: On eight. Three's a game.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : Oh, he was chucking. Yep.
Tim Linehan: He had 14 games this past season where he took 10 or more three -pointers.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : Yeah, he's one of those guys that shoots. at just as many threes as twos right like that it's it's threes his highlights reel is three pointers crazy three -pointers off movement all the time or dunks that's what basically i saw in the
Tim Linehan: Yep. but for that But for that volume and to be 35%, like let's sign me up right there. He.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : I liked him watching him in in the Merrimack games that I watched. I did.
Tim Linehan: For sure. I mean, we're used to watching, you know, we we talked about the glory years, but. BC would take about 10 three -pointers a game. when we were at school and like one or two of them was from Dorna camp or from oats, right?
Tim Linehan: Like this was, this was, this was not how things were run.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : Skinner was not a huge three -point system. I know, I know.
Tim Linehan: Yeah.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : it willll be I don't know if he'll take eight at BC.
Tim Linehan: Uh,
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : it'll be That'll be interesting to see what his usage is.
Tim Linehan: Nah.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : but he was I love what you put on here. like A little bit Jordan Hawkins comparison. Jordan Hawkins, for those that don't know, was a really good wing player at UConn who just ran around screens and... Took three pointers. and was a pain in the butt to guard.
Tim Linehan: Yep.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : And I feel like that could be Shelton.
Tim Linehan: No pressure, Ernest. That's a first -round NBA draft pick.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : yes and when i'm saying all these things more the profile not that he's going to be doing
Tim Linehan: but Yeah, totally. What I really like, 23 points against Auburn. but we got to go with the good with the bad. Only three points against Florida. But when you play the big boys, that happens. What I what i like the most. As Gallo played him 40 minutes. in the MAC Semi and in the MAC Final.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : That's awesome.
Tim Linehan: so that tells me if he's just a shooter if he's just a shooter he's not playing 40 minutes so that's some That was a big tell for me.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : Even 40 minutes back there. me
Tim Linehan: that I think there's going to be nights that he he makes six three -pointers, and then there might be some nights where he... only plays 10 minutes.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : Yeah, he's he's an interesting one to see where he fits in whether they go big whether they go small
Tim Linehan: Yeah.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : Speaking of big.
Tim Linehan: A bit of a lottery ticket, I think.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : Yeah, I think so too. Speaking of bigs Let's get into the pigs. All right.
Tim Linehan: Alright, here we go.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : And we are trying to be cognizant of time. We know you're staying with us here. This is a bit of a megapod tonight, but that's all right. We're we're diving in. we're We're getting into it tonight. so Luke Hunger. He is. projected to he's a five man for bc okay so he's 6 10 250.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : Played three years at Northwestern and then one year at George Washington. So again, Murray brought in a ton of experienced guys, which I love. so Basically, for his entire career, if you look at Luke Hunger, he was Played about 10 minutes.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : between 10 and 15 minutes a night and you know, was very much an end of the bench guy three or four points three or four rebounds There was a stretch last February, though, where he had six straight double figure games.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : Hence. including three double -doubles. What happened was that George Washington's starting center, who was actually quite pretty was pretty good, got hurt, and Hunger got an opportunity, and he he seized it. He played really, really well in the in the increased minutes, and I'm sure that Murray noticed that, and that's part of why he's at BC now. Shooting efficiency went way up last year. He shot 80 % from the foul line.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : So as a big guy. Big sample size, 76 out of 93. Pretty good. made 14 threes last year. That's more than he made in his entire career. So I'm not saying this guy's going to fill it up, but he does seem to be. on the upward trajectory on an upward trajectory as a shooter and as a guy who can maybe you know give you six to ten points from that five position when I watch him I do see why he fits the Luke Murray offense he's a really good screener he picked all his highlights are like pick and pop pick and roll
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : He's not a guy who you're just going to throw the ball to in the post and is going to you know go to work. That's not him at all. he's goingnna move He moves well. He's going to set screens. He's going to be somebody who... in many ways, is going to be instrumental, I think, in the Murray offense as a big guy who's setting screens and making passes and then making an open shot, hopefully.
Tim Linehan: Yeah, I mean he needs to be... Donovan Klingon -Light, he needs to be... I think he's more like Sunogo, if people remember Sunogo from their first championship team.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : Sure.
Tim Linehan: Sunogo never really shot threes and then by the end would step out and and swish a few here and there. And I think that's going to be him. I do not like this. 13 career blocks, that can't be possible.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : That is correct. I did my homework on that. He's 6 '10", and he's played four years, but he only has 13 career blocks. So we're going to call him. How's this for a term? Positional defender. That's what that's what Lou Conger is going to be a position.
Tim Linehan: I think i had more I had more blocks. in our little east run freshman year than he's had in his whole life.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : you go little east restaurant You're on glory days right now?
Tim Linehan: possibly.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : You're dropping that in?
Tim Linehan: well Just so the people, a little respect. Quilly and I were... members of the Little East runner -up our freshman year. Me, you, Dustin, and...
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : Well, we didn't.
Tim Linehan: Tyler.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : We did have a walk -on on the team that was the fourth guy on that squad. But what that meant was we played we did play at halftime of of a BC game, right?
Tim Linehan: Yeah, so we're not total jokes. We're mediocre basketball players, but we got to play at halftime of a game because Tyler Neville. eventually will walk on.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : Legends.
Tim Linehan: took us there.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : legend he definitely had more than 13 career blocks tyler neville so uh luke hunger uh you know hey positional defender we'll leave it at that
Tim Linehan: Okay. Yeah.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : the other The other big guy. is Ali Tunkara. I think he so he's he's a unique one in that he's a seven -footer. 2 30. He's a junior. He played at Arkansas State.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : i watch him and i see dunks and i see elliops and i see Block shots. I... don't really see a ton of skill in terms of, like, how is this going to fit in Murray's offense? Like, he shoots 35 % from the foul line. He's never attempted a three.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : so
Tim Linehan: your comp Your comp is perfect. to Tell the people your comp.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : Yeah. It's a deep cut. it's a You'd have to know basketball, but Samson Johnson, who was really good. I mean, I'm not saying it's going to be him, but Samson Johnson was a backup big for UConn in 2023. He'd come off the bench, just give you a block shot, give you a dunk, you know, give you three fouls in about nine minutes.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : And. lobs, pick and rolls, athletic. to defensive presence like he did average a block and a half a game so I feel like it's almost like a two -headed monster, hunger and Tunkara. And I just don't know, though, if they're going to play.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : A true five. That brings me to Benjamin who who you looked into. They might go small because I just don't know if you can have. It'll be interesting to see if, if hunger gets a lot of time. I don't know if 10 car is going to, he's not going to finish games. He might just be a, you know, an energy guy, 10, 12 minutes a night type of thing.
Tim Linehan: Benjamin, Brandon Benjamin, sophomore, is the unicorn. There's there's not a replicate on this. right he He stands alone. He is 6 '8".
Tim Linehan: allegedly from from from some Twitter talks, 230 pounds.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : like smart Yeah, yeah.
Tim Linehan: out of Newark. New Jersey. I went to Bergen Catholic. Marilyn really wanted him. And I like that because that's Buzz Williams and Buzz Williams.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : Yes.
Tim Linehan: is a bit of a goof, but he likes hard -nosed, tough players. uh Benjamin averaged 14 points and 10 rebounds at Fairfield last year.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : I love those numbers.
Tim Linehan: four
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : that that's that
Tim Linehan: for Here's the big one. Four offensive rebounds a game. Four in the game, one of the most in the nation. Offensive rebounds. Now I've watched St. John's for the last... 100 years. and favorite player in our house.
Tim Linehan: My son's favorite player. He wears 24 is Zuby. And you just got to be wired. Offensive rebounds is...
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : the edge of Right now in the NBA, yeah, right.
Tim Linehan: yeah first first round pick he snuck in there but you're just wired that way you can't you can't
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : That's that number Sorry to interrupt. i think he was I think he led the country in offensive rebounds again. Benjamin.
Tim Linehan: Benjamin.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : i think I think it was the best in the country. Yeah.
Tim Linehan: And you you can't coach that, right?
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : in terms of. No.
Tim Linehan: that's That's just like a want to. And. I think this team is going to need this because I'm a little worried about the rebounding. I'm a little worried about the athleticism. And I think Benjamin is a...
Tim Linehan: massive piece to it. 1 .6 blocks, I like.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : Yeah. for six, eight guys.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : He's one of these six, eight guys, but I think he does have one of like a seven foot wingspan. Like he just. Feels like a relentless offensive rebounder, hustle guy, defensive guy. Like I love guys like that. It'll be interesting.
Tim Linehan: Totally.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : So I want to see where he fits.
Tim Linehan: I have a hard time thinking of a UConn comp for him, interestingly enough. We got some. some BC comps. He only had offers to UMass and UTEP. So he's an unheralded recruit.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : Out of high school, out of high school.
Tim Linehan: and we've
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : Right. Yeah.
Tim Linehan: At a high school, yeah.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : Yeah.
Tim Linehan: so you know can he tap into Can he be our Craig Smith? Can he be our Jared Dudley and and and be that chip on your shoulder and turn into an all -ACC player? He had 16 double doubles. last year.
Tim Linehan: And here's the better here's the better stat.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : Productive.
Tim Linehan: He had nine rebounds in seven other games.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : That's awesome.
Tim Linehan: So 16 double -doubles, you play about 30, right? 35 games depending on the season.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : Yeah.
Tim Linehan: 16 double -doubles. And then. Nine other games. Oh, no, nine rebounds in seven other games.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : Yeah, he almost had twenty over 20 double doubles. He went for 18 and 10 against Penn State in his first ever game.
Tim Linehan: Yeah.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : Love that.
Tim Linehan: Yep, 11 -9 against Seton Hall. And Seton Hall. never has the talent, but always has the coaching with Shaheen Holloway and they're the bruisers. And if he's putting up 11 and nine. in his third ever game in the NCAAs against Seton Hall. I like that He is not a stretch four or a stretch five.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : He's like an old school bruiser.
Tim Linehan: He does not.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : Like he's an old school athletics foreman.
Tim Linehan: Yeah, like an on like your undersized power forward that we all grew up watching.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : Yeah.
Tim Linehan: yeah deep cut st john's anthony glover right like these undersized power forwards that just bang rebounds.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : Yeah.
Tim Linehan: and just got to be a dog a little bit and the the size scares me uh but whatever he's just gonna go and and i think he's an important piece because they don't have a lot Like that.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : I love him. Yeah, I think he's going to be really what I think the question mark on him is just. Do you play him at the four next to hunger? or could you get away with playing him at the really undersized five because he's such an active player?
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : And then you go small and he's the undersized five.
Tim Linehan: Yes.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : I think that that's really going to be interesting.
Tim Linehan: He's the five and then yeah, right and then you got a you got to move shifts shift some people over I do like he shoots 70 % from the free throw line.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : there's one
Tim Linehan: So maybe
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : Right.
Tim Linehan: He's out there stretching his game a little bit. Everybody does that.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : Sure.
Tim Linehan: And and that would probably open up some things as well.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : We've got one more guy. We'd be remiss not to mention him. He's 6 '10", 225. His name is Jack Bailey. He is the forgotten man. He is the only guy. the lone holdover as a scholarship player i think is one other walk -on actually will egenheimer Again, the fact that I know that, I don't know. hyped lot
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : But fact check me, I think that's true. Sad but true that I know that. But anyway, he's a lone holdover from the previous year as a scholarship guy, Jack Bailey. And basically, here's why. He is 6 '10", 225, and he's known basically for having size and skill. Good passer, good ball handler. He was redshirted last year because basically maybe he wasn't strong enough, wasn't ready to play.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : He's a total wild card. Maybe he gets a little bit of time. Maybe he Murray intentionally wanted to keep him because he does. have some skills in terms of feel for the game, but honestly not a ton out there on him was a decent recruit two years ago just he's a wait and see
Tim Linehan: Yeah. Iowa and Butler wanted him, right? I like that.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : Yeah, out of high school, he was a pretty big recruit. So it's just he just didn't see the floor last year. So it's a little bit like, OK, what do we have here? But he he does bring some size and some skill. And that's why I think he stuck around with Murray.
Tim Linehan: Yeah, I think with the bigs my My big fear. not to use big twice there, is that. We're downplaying the UConn bigs. The UConn bigs are all NBA players, right?
Tim Linehan: Klingon got drafted very early. Tyrus Reed just had an insane All -American year. Sunogo gets... lost in the shuffle and was an absolute stud. They owe it.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : These guys are not. Yeah, these guys are not that.
Tim Linehan: These, UConn has always had this stud big man.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : So.
Tim Linehan: who can do the stuff within the offense, right? Who can pick and then pick again and then roll and then everything they need them to do and then also be a dog on defense. So that's if we talk about the ceiling of this team.
Tim Linehan: i'm a little worried about that with the front court, I hope. I hope I'm wrong and I hope. You know, Hunger and hunger and Ali are... are Clinging and Klingon and Samson Light.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : We'll have to see. Yeah So... I think. I want to ask you this before we just kind of end with our overtime session here. I think it's pretty clear that he took money Williams and Jacob for a feed immediate day. So those guys are, they're getting some buzz, right? Other than those two, do you have a player that you're like, Hey, this kid. this guy is under the radar and i think he's going to really wind up in a key cog on the team
Tim Linehan: Uh, I am putting it on Luke Hunger. We just said they need a five, and I think he's going to have a chip on his shoulder, and I think Luke Hunger is the bust -out guy. It doesn't mean he's the best player on the team.
Tim Linehan: but it means he unlocks them a little bit and and he opens up.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : Okay.
Tim Linehan: And he runs. the The five, he's playing 25 minutes, 25, 35. 25 minutes. 30 maybe. at the five and he opens up luke's system for everybody else to thrive his numbers aren't going to be gaudy but he's going to be
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : Screen setter, passer, sure. Yep.
Tim Linehan: essential piece that I'm hoping for.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : Okay. So once we get the budget up on this pod, we're going to get a whiteboard, right? That's the goal. We're going to get a whiteboard that's behind us, all right? And we're going to make predictions on that whiteboard. This is the first one that we're slapping on, that your guy, your underrated guy that pops this year and in terms of really helping the team is Luke Honger.
Tim Linehan: So the origin of the whiteboard is we lived in Southie after we graduated from BC, like so many people do. And we bought a brown couch that we...
Tim Linehan: peep term. hell from Bob's Discount Furniture. And we would sit around and have so many hot takes and people would just say ridiculous things, which is probably why.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : We were wrongs. We were wrong so often.
Tim Linehan: Yeah, it's why we're here now, right And there was no accountability. So eventually we were like, no, you got to whiteboard that. And we never bought a whiteboard. It was just the expression. So we're bringing it.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : Metaphorical.
Tim Linehan: We're bringing the whiteboard here, and and then you guys can hold us accountable. But we're going to whiteboard it. My first whiteboard of my official. First type flex whiteboard Lou Conger, bust out player.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : Okay, mine. I like it We're going to hold each other accountable here and then you guys can tweet at us and remind us if we were wrong. is uh you get on me with the pronunciation but i'm going zach smeriker did i say that right
Tim Linehan: Yeah, Smerikar.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : Have a good one.
Tim Linehan: Smerikar.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : Yeah. Yep, I'm going with him. this kid The guy from Slovenia, 19 years old, international experience, 6 '7", 200 pounds, handles the ball, has swagger. I think he is going to play a lot of minutes. He's going to handle the ball a lot. I think he's going to be a key player on this team. So he's my guy other than Furphy and Money Williams to look out for.
Tim Linehan: Yeah, he might not be able to guard you. But... He... He could score, hopefully.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : We need to know if anyone on this team can guard anyone.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : So this is a... it's That. Don't hold it us don't hold that against us. against us if the defense is a disaster but hey we we we trust Mari and hopefully they can play good enough defense where if they score enough points they slow the game you know you slow the game down so much with those possession you you don't have to play great defense right
Tim Linehan: Well, let's just follow the math. They're going to take 24 threes a game. They're going to make 34 % of them. And they're going to limit the possessions. And then come up with key stops when they need them.
Tim Linehan: And money is going to make end of shot clock plays. and
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : Yeah, honestly. The limiting possessions is a big thing.
Tim Linehan: That's it. Simple. Simple. it simple
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : Yeah, there we go. Tournament bound. All right. So. We just we just went through that that. We were in the weeds there. But I think it was good.
Tim Linehan: Yeah, we appreciate you if you're still with us, but it's it's a whole new team. Next year we will all have four guys, hopefully.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : Yeah. i my mom listened to episode one i'm gonna say when we got into monty williams usage she might have Just tagged out tonight. but that's
Tim Linehan: Yeah.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : Hey. We'll see. We'll see what those engagements look like. So let's end it with overtime. All right. Overtime feature that we want to put in is basically just sharing a little bit about why we love basketball, why we're doing the pod, a little bit about us too. So each overtime session, we'll do like a question. and an answer, right. So I came up with this one. And I'm going to put you on the spot on it too.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : It is the game. or team, I guess, that basically made you fall in love with basketball? What what game was it that hooked you? what Or what team was it that you're like, oh, that's it. I'm in. I love this game.
Tim Linehan: Yeah, so this overtime segment is going to kind of tap into the nostalgia piece. college basketball guys like to just sit in a room and say things like Tony Delk. Toby Bailey.
Tim Linehan: Sharif Abdulrahim. khalid el amin right that's that's what they do so this is our little touch on that so here we go
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : All those. All those great players.
Tim Linehan: Yeah. Here we go. We got my core memory. I'm going to shock our... 52 listeners and not go St. John's here. And I'm going to.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : 52. We're more than that. Let's go.
Tim Linehan: I'm going to say the Fab Five. It's a cliche, but it's real. It was very real for me. You guys have always busted me for being a frontrunner, and I guess I've been a frontrunner since I was a little kid, since 1991, 1992.
Tim Linehan: 91 -92, Fab Five. Weber. Jackson. Jawan Howard. Everybody knows the story. Jalen Rose. They go to the Final Four.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : Don't forget Jimmy King.
Tim Linehan: They go to the championship game, Jimmy King.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : Yep.
Tim Linehan: They go to the championship game. and lose to Duke. And i if I'm being honest, I don't really remember that one. I remember the Fab Five and the hype of it. But that is first and second grade for for us.
Tim Linehan: I vividly remember 92 -93.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : Sure.
Tim Linehan: I remember staying up for the final game.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : Oh yeah.
Tim Linehan: against North Carolina, Eric Montrose. the timeout, like I had a blue number four Chris Webber jersey. You couldn't have names on the back. There was no NIL, right? I had the baggy Michigan shorts.
Tim Linehan: I had black Nike socks.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : Oh, you had all that.
Tim Linehan: Uh,
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : You were you were just that kid.
Tim Linehan: And I... I mean, picture, you know me like that is just perfect, right?
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : yes You can picture that, to the you know, just missing shots but looking good.
Tim Linehan: Yes, exactly.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : Totally.
Tim Linehan: And I was just like, this is awesome. Right. This is so awesome. And then the 90s just kind of kept going. Right. You go Scotty Thurman in Arkansas and all that stuff. So but that that.
Tim Linehan: That. Fab Five era. like the the documentary on the e60 or whatever 30 for 30 so good and just takes me to a time and place you know if i went st john's Malik Sealy was the man. Rest in peace, Malik Sealy. The Felipe Sports Illustrated cover. And those skyline shorts and the so much hype that they never lived up to. But if I'm talking early beginning.
Tim Linehan: It's the Fab Five and Weber in the timeout.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : Love it. i'll go I'll go quick. mine Mine's one game. And it's funny, you know, I talked in the episode one about how much I love that 1992 or 1993, 1994 BC team that made the Elite Eight. Love that team. And then.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : those BC's doing those uniforms this year. They're harkening back to the 1993 -1994 uniforms.
Tim Linehan: They replicated it with the photo shoot, right?
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : and They replicated the Sports Illustrated photo shoot. I referenced that UNC win where they beat Stackhouse and Wallace. Danny Abrams is actually on staff still for BC Hoops. I think he's helping out with player personnel stuff, and he was on those teams. So they're definitely making a nod back to those 90s teams. My game, it's one game, 1992 -1993. I looked it up the other day. It was 88 -86. BC beats Georgetown.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : in I think double overtime. And I'll pose you, I'll give you this trivia question. There was a big guy on Georgetown that dropped over 30 that night. John Thompson was the coach. Their big was epic. He was so good. Do you know who that was? 1992, 1993 Georgetown.
Tim Linehan: It's got to be after Ewing, so it's got to be Alonzo maybe.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : That's all morning was unguardable Absolutely unguardable.
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : Epic game. BC was down, then they were up, then they were down. Malcolm Huckabee, who who's the man, he's he's an awesome guard at BC, and he does some ESPN telecast stuff. He drilled a three, got fouled, four -point play to like put it into overtime. I had to go to bed. It was double overtime. I was 10 years old. My dad's like, you got to go to bed. You can't stay up. I listened to it on the radio. There used to be this guy named Ted Sarandos, who was just an absurd play -by -play guy for BC basketball. He was kind of a goofball, like just ridiculous voice. He'd always exaggerate things. I'm sitting there as a 10 -year -old kid in bed. Listening to the end of that game on the radio, they win 88 -86. I was hooked. That was it. That was the game.

Tim Linehan: He seems to be maniacal and i we all have the faith in him, right? We we probably said the word hope. like 72 times. on We didn't run the analytics on episode one. But he's given us legit reason to hope.
Tim Linehan: And episode three, we're going to look at the schedule. We're going to go. in the non -con and we're going to look at the acc And then we're going to kind of break the ACC into tiers.
Tim Linehan: ACC last year got eight teams into the tournament. And now the field has expanded to 76 teams. So that probably ACC, their goal is nine teams. Can BC sneak into that nine?
Timothy Quealy and Timothy Linehan : Yeah. So we'll look at that next time and and unpack the schedule and we'll do that with you. be awesome hanging out.
