00:00:21
Speaker
Hey, this is Christian Roldan. And Jordan Morris from the Seattle Sounders Football Club. And you're listening to... There's no study at this. Come on! Hey, Ocean! Let's go! I want to say bye-bye! The Seattle Sounders have done it! MLS Cup winners! And Portland can't say he's cheating! Here comes Rudy Diaz through the middle to crowd it for Seattle! They have climbed the mountain!
00:00:51
Speaker
And now our masters of all that they survey. Michael Odero leaves absolutely no doubt. The Sounders rule the region. Seattle Sounders, this can feel it. Seattle Sounders, the greatest MLS team in history. How does this one feel? This feels fucking awesome.
00:01:39
Speaker
I didn't know what it was. Is that what you young people call twerking?
00:01:50
Speaker
I have no idea. I don't know.

Speaker
Welcome to another episode of Nos Adietes. I am Jeremiah Shan. Joining me today is Matt Montgomery of the newly rebranded Wasatch Soccer Sentinel. Used to be RSL soapbox. If you've been paying attention, there's a lot of craziness going on with SB Nation these days. And you guys have said on your own and you created a custom website and it looks great, Matt. Thank you.
00:02:59
Speaker
Yeah, I mean, I'm a developer by trade, mostly management at this point. So getting my hands wet, my feet wet, and actually building something has been really rewarding.
00:03:11
Speaker
Well, I got to tell you, it looks sharp and I'm very proud of the
Building Wasatch Soccer Sentinel
00:03:16
Speaker
work that you've done. And it seems like it's all like, it actually seems like you managed to make a more robust, like maybe people are just energized right now, but it's, you guys are putting out a ton of great content. It's really good to see. And you're still doing your podcast too, right?
00:03:35
Speaker
Yeah, we're still around, uh, I love, I love, I, when I do listen to your part, I don't, I'm not going to sit here and say I listen to all the time, but it's a great podcast. It's a really fun podcast. Thank you. I'm just sad. You don't listen to it all the time. I know I was a record as usually the first 45 minutes has nothing to do with Ray Alsalt Lake or soccer. Oh, that's more intrigued. I didn't realize that was an every time thing. Yeah, that's every time.
00:04:00
Speaker
I mean, unless we have a special guest who, you know, we value the time of, if it's a special guest, we don't value the time of, you know, it's a little different. What's the name of the, give the listeners the name of your podcast. Yeah.
Podcast Transition to Anchor
00:04:14
Speaker
So the, the name of the podcast is off the crossbar. Uh, but you can find it on the RSL soapbox feed until we get that moved.
00:04:22
Speaker
Yeah. I guess that's not that this is stuff people won't care about, but I think it's moving to anchor in the short term. And then eventually you'll be able to move it wherever you want. Right. Yeah. We're just going to do anchor. It's you are. Okay. Yeah. I'm lazy. Okay. I'm lazy about some things, but not, but not developing your own website, apparently. Yeah, no.
00:04:40
Speaker
So as much as I enjoyed just chopping it up with you, Matt, uh, and, and I hope, or I really do hope our listeners have a special place in their heart for your, for you and the entire RSL media community. Cause it's, I feel like we have a lot, we do this a lot. We keep taking exactly, exactly. Um, and we keep stealing people from you, which gives us reasons to talk to you even more.
RSL vs. Vancouver Whitecaps Match Summary
00:05:04
Speaker
Yeah, that's fine. You can have them. You can have some of the people we have now too, if you'd like. Do you need another coach? Yeah, I know. Who knows these days?
00:05:18
Speaker
Let's talk about the soccer. The soccer, uh, RSL is coming up a pretty, pretty good win, a road win against the Vancouver whitecaps outplayed in the first half, uh, really came on strong in the second half, a couple of goals to turn. I think it was a one zero deficit into a two one win, uh, including from the winner from Demir Krylocke, which. Hey, welcome back Demir. He's that's a big one.
00:05:44
Speaker
Yeah, and he's he's widely regarded as the nicest person in the whole city probably So nobody feels bad about this and I don't if if he scores a hat trick against you Which just happened but if he does like just know it's coming from a very nice man Yeah, I mean that's that's it makes it feel it makes the
00:06:05
Speaker
It makes it go down a little smoother, I suppose, knowing that. It doesn't for me, actually, I've discovered. The nicer they are, the more deep-seated resentment I build.
00:06:15
Speaker
Yeah, it was so funny. My favorite RSL memory was when people were just yelling and screaming at Nick Raimondo. I guess it must have been after the 2011 Western Conference semis. And his reaction to that was like, I loved it. And it felt like he would just won over every sound. It was like you couldn't be mad at him anymore. But he kept torturing us anyway. Yeah.
00:06:43
Speaker
It was a beautiful moment. But yeah, so the stat that jumped out at me is maybe the most unbelievable stat in MLS history.
00:06:55
Speaker
14 years in a row, RSL has now a 14 year unbeaten streak in season openers, despite playing 13 of those on the road.
RSL's Unbeaten Streak in Season Openers
00:07:05
Speaker
What the hell? I don't know if there is an answer. The structure of the team has changed considerably. The ownership of the team has changed. The coaching staff has changed four times.
00:07:19
Speaker
Like, I don't think there's a good explanation. It just is something that's ours for now. Yeah. And what I also was impressed by, I think you had to go back at least to 2018, if not farther, to find the last time they lost the second game of the season.
00:07:37
Speaker
Like, yeah, I don't know. There's no explanation for that. We've been pretty miserable during some of those years. Yeah. So I don't know. So what you're saying is RSL is due for a loss in the second game of the season. I don't I don't know if I believe in do statistics working that way. I don't either. But but if you want to, that's fine.
00:08:02
Speaker
Yeah, so what are
RSL's Player Investments and Effectiveness
00:08:04
Speaker
we to expect? The RSL was a playoff team last year, which I don't know that. I mean, barely. Barely, but they did it on the last day of the season, and they did it by eliminating the timbers, which... Yeah, that's true. There were a lot, I gotta tell you, there may have been more people rooting for RSL in Seattle than Salt Lake on the last game of the season. I think they were more worried about that game than they were about the sounders, the game that the sounders played. Yeah.
00:08:32
Speaker
That makes sense, doesn't it? We took a lot of Schadenfreude in seeing you eliminate the timbers, so thank you. You're welcome. I played a big role in that personally.
00:08:45
Speaker
But what is it? What are the expectations coming into this year? Like, I know at some point all the blitzer money was supposed to just start pouring in and there's roster was supposed to get stacked, but that's not really happened, right? Yeah, we have spent more money and certainly spent more on tan players over the last year than we did under delay Hanson. So that's not the top end, but like the top quartile, I guess, has been invested in
00:09:16
Speaker
I don't know if those players that we're investing in are worth the money. Maybe they are. We signed Brian Vera. It was like a 1.82 something million dollar transfer deal for a player that had just come back to Columbia from the Italian second division, I believe, I think it would say be. And we'll see if those are good investments.
00:09:43
Speaker
But everyone also is now expecting him to, to be clear, Vera is a verified left back, played left back throughout his career. We're expecting him to be a backup center back apparently and is listed that way on the club's roster. So I don't know. I mean, I guess we're investing, but is it meaningful and is it impactful? I don't think we know the answer to that and it'll probably take
00:10:11
Speaker
six to 12 weeks to even have a glimmer of a sense about it.
RSL's Rising Stars
00:10:17
Speaker
And so with the most of the most of these players that are that certainly that played against Vancouver are names that we should be familiar with.
00:10:26
Speaker
But who are the standouts? Who are the players that you are optimistic about? Yeah, I mean, I'm always optimistic about Justin Glad. He's still on a good trajectory. It's less vertical than perhaps it once was. I think he's solidifying as a top of MLS center back. What level is that internationally? I don't actually know in this league, but I think you'll see him compared to players like Walker Zimmerman pretty regularly.
00:10:55
Speaker
And I think that's pretty favorable. Marcel Silva is back for another year. I will see if he stays injury free, but when he does, he's proven a very good partnership with GLAAD. Ruby or Rubine is somebody I'm actually optimistic about, which is a significant change from basically all of 2022.
00:11:15
Speaker
He missed preseason last year and Pablo Mescroini likes to blame a lot of things on players missing preseason, but he didn't this year. He did miss the opening game because he earned a red card in the first playoff game. I'm still still irritated about that.
00:11:34
Speaker
We've got Andres Gomez, who came in from Millenarios, I believe is that said. Yeah. And we spent money on him. So I'm, I don't know if I'm optimistic, but I'm excited to see what we get there. I can keep talking. I can name a million other players, but I want to hear more from you.
00:11:55
Speaker
Well, so I'm, I'm just sort of looking at the, the foot mob page right now. And the name that that's jumping out to me is, is not a new player. Uh, but the look like he had a really good game. Uh, lawful send. How do you say that? Oh yeah. Jasper level send. Yeah. Uh, yeah. He is an interesting player and he came in as a.
00:12:15
Speaker
a very, very late draft pick last year. I think his, his draft value was depressed considerably because he wasn't international. And he's kind of old for a draft pick. Yeah, he's like 24. But he had a really good year, completely unexpectedly. We had him on a rail monarch steel, and then we had a rash of injuries to start the season. And then we just signed him to an RSL first team deal.
00:12:46
Speaker
And it just sort of happened. And then we had this pretty good midfielder. I am curious to see what his second year looks like. It's always hard. He's a player with a little bit of bite, some good passing, a lot of hustle. And in a public master Annie system, hustle will get you everything. So he's very much a master Annie style player.
00:13:09
Speaker
in that regard, not not master any as a player. Right. And I'm kind of like he likes he likes. Yeah, he he wants to see people running basically 90 minutes. And that's his M.O. And, you know, playing playing direct soccer, playing route one that plays right into it. So he'll see
Jefferson Savarino's Return and Expectations
00:13:30
Speaker
lots of running this year.
00:13:32
Speaker
So another player who had a good day was Jefferson Savarino, who came back to the team last year after some time away. What can you tell us about him? Yeah, I mean, he's great. I have no idea why he ended up back at RSL. If it's not, I mean, the only thing it can seem to be right now is that he just wanted to be back.
00:13:59
Speaker
And that's really weird to me because he probably could be making quite a bit more elsewhere. He probably could have done to Europe. I think he's a player that would have success in a system that played like slightly more beautifully and tried to keep the ball on the ground.
00:14:17
Speaker
We play very aerially and he's like five, six, five, seven. He's like my height, but much more athletic, unfortunately. I mean, I guess, fortunately, I don't play on the team. It doesn't matter. Right. No one. No one. Unfortunately for you, I suppose, personally. Yeah. I mean, if I were more athletic, I would probably want to swap. It would be a shame to have him in his body.
00:14:41
Speaker
podcasting with me right now while you were training for the game. That would be majorly problematic for a number of reasons, but I'd probably be pretty cheap. So I mean, sign me up, I guess. Yeah. No, Sabrina is great. He likes to cut in.
00:15:01
Speaker
He's very creative. He's got a wicked shot on him from just outside. And I think he can easily be Rael Salt Lake's best player in 2023. So the other player who I imagine is in the running for that is Demir Krylocke. We talked a little bit about him before. What is the position that we're saying he plays these days? Oh, no. I think it's just Stryker now. We kind of played him in a 10-ish role.
00:15:31
Speaker
But we also, I mean, if it's anything, it's one of those weird false 10 or like nine and a half roles. Like a Freddie Monteiro type of role. That's what I'm calling that role now. He's like three times the size of Freddie Monteiro. He also loves to run in and late runs are sort of his thing. So he does play a little deeper. It's not a traditional 10 he's playing.
00:15:56
Speaker
but nothing about Mastrani is traditional in those terms. It's traditional in like a turn of the century England sort of way.
00:16:07
Speaker
So I thought there was a funny little thing where Matt Doyle, who has fun poking fun at Pablo. And, you know, this whole ex-dog thing is sort of become his shtick. But Pablo actually gave an answer that showed some real tactical nuance after the...
Pablo Mastroeni's Tactical Evolution
00:16:30
Speaker
Is Pablo Mastroani turning over a new leaf? Is he embracing
00:16:35
Speaker
some of these more advanced tactical ideas, or is this just him gaslighting us? I would not say that Master Annie would ever describe himself as a tactical coach. Certainly there are tactics involved.
00:16:55
Speaker
Uh, and I think the one we saw most, you know, the, the one tactic he keeps going back to is, uh, like runs behind far posts from center backs on set pieces. That's sort of like the most consistent thing I can find from him. And, you know, launching the ball long and knocking it down. And I mean, I guess they're all tactics, right? It's all, it's all tactics. It's all tactics. It's just, but whether or not it was invented in 19.
00:17:22
Speaker
50 or not. Yeah. He has said things like that. How did he put it? The only good possession basically is if you're able to switch the ball immediately.
00:17:35
Speaker
Um, I think if you let Pablo Mascareini talk long enough, there will be like tactical insights that come out. Right. But I wonder, like could chat GPT provide you the same? I'm not a big AI person, uh, to, to set that clear. Um, Pablo is way more focused on the.
00:17:58
Speaker
the interpersonal and, I mean, he talks about like the look in players' eyes. During preseason, he talked about like one of the important things being how players fold their clothes after games. And I think he just sort of goes. You give him the topic and he just goes. Well, the world needs folks like that too, because what would just be boring if we all became
00:18:28
Speaker
Stat-driven robots, I guess. I guess that's the complaint. I think I want to be a stat driven robot. I know there should be room for stat driven robots, but if we were all stat driven robots, it would be boring, I guess. I guess. I don't know. Suppose theoretically, I don't know. Yeah, I mean, I guess I shouldn't complain too much. We won a game. Yeah, you won a game. I mean, I guess the statistics of the playoffs last year.
00:18:53
Speaker
We would make the playoffs again this year and we'd have a home game. So. As Garth Longaway likes to know, it's been two years in a row that the, that RSL has played longer than the sounders. Yeah. I don't, I don't know what happened there, but that's fine by me. Uh, no, no offense, I guess. I don't know. I want everyone to like me. So, uh, no offense intended definitely at all.
00:19:19
Speaker
Yeah, well, we we do we do like you, even if we don't always like RSL. Oh, that's fine. I am. I wonder if if you guys are going to get to wear your golds again, because those golds look sharp. Yeah, I think we probably will. I think they look sharp, too. It sounds like we will wear all gold when we play teams like the Sanders. I would say color reason. I don't know. I don't know what it was. But what? Well, what's oh, red is.
00:19:49
Speaker
Red is red blue shorts now. But what is the other? What's your change? Your gold jerseys are primary and then and what's the secondary jersey? Oh, golds are secondary. But I think we're going to enter a system where they stop treating it as primary secondary. Right. For whatever reason. You sell more that way. Well, it would be it would be ironic if the Sounders wore their Bruce Lee kits, which everyone says look like RSL jerseys. Yeah, they kind of do.
00:20:15
Speaker
This they do. And I have to admit like the MLS put out this, you know, cartoon thing where it had two of like two representatives from every team in there. And I was like, Oh, Christian rolled on is talking to a random RSL player. And then I realized, Oh, that's Jordan Morris wearing the.
00:20:31
Speaker
Wearing the Bruce Lee shit. That's that's pretty spectacular. Yeah. So that that was that was and that was a real react. That wasn't me just like having a laugh as they say overseas. Yeah. I mean, Christian Roldan was I mean, famously not almost a Real Salt Lake player, but yeah, there's still a lot of bitterness in Salt Lake about that draft.
00:20:56
Speaker
I can I can respect that. Yeah. Yeah. Because it turned out he was really good. Yeah. And we gave you the opportunity to sign him. Yeah. Craig and Garth cooked that one up between them, if I remember correctly. Yeah. Yeah. Very disappointing. Yeah. So other than than those things, I did want to pick your brain as someone who I just like to
00:21:24
Speaker
I think I'm going to be asking this a lot of people this year. Is it about Star Trek? It's not about Star Trek. Oh, okay. I'm not up on current Star Trek. I've heard that the new stuff is actually pretty good. Yeah, I am biased in every believable way. Yes, but don't take my word for it. Okay.
00:21:48
Speaker
Well, I was just curious what what what are your first impressions of a season pass of MLS season passing?
MLS Season Pass on Apple TV: Bugs and Features
00:21:56
Speaker
Yeah, it's a little buggy. We saw like the the RSL game today stopped being available for some reason to rewatch. It was just a content error. And then it was available again. I think they're going to work out these kinks. I mean, there was talk of
00:22:15
Speaker
post-match, press conferences, being on Apple TV. I haven't seen that yet. Yeah, I was wondering. I know that was my expectation as well. I was obviously in a press conference, so I didn't go back and... Did you dress up nice because you were going to be on Apple TV? Well, I was off camera, I think. I hope... Are you going in front?
00:22:36
Speaker
Well, in front of the camera. No, I wasn't actually. I was like three rows back. So I don't know. Usually the reporters don't get caught in the camera at Loom & Field. And they did set up a proper press conference for the visiting coach, which is traditionally at Loom & Field, the visiting coach just does like a standup in the hallway. And they actually set up a press area for the visiting team last week. And I assume that's going to be the standard now.
00:23:06
Speaker
Yeah, that looked to be the case in Vancouver as well for a mass training. And the video like the video may not have come out on Apple TV, but it looked like it could have. Right. Yeah. So I I'm I, you know, I didn't watch a ton of not of non sounders coverage this week. But what I watched, I came away feeling like all the important pieces are there to be made into something that is absolutely spectacular, whether or not it's spectacular yet is
00:23:35
Speaker
It's not yet. I mean like the 360 show I thought has room for improvement but like all the pieces that I wanted to be there are there and I assume will eventually be there. And the broadcasts look great. I will definitely take some issue with some of the talent they've selected. I did have to turn off the audio for the Sounders game. I just couldn't handle it anymore. Did you use the local radio broadcast?
00:23:59
Speaker
so I had I didn't even think to do that I did turn on the local radio for the timbers game last night just to hear what it sounded like yeah and it's a different audio quality like it's it sounded like it was coming from like a like it was being recorded in a in a
00:24:15
Speaker
in a sound booth or something because there was no, there was no, uh, ambient noise. Oh, that's odd. Yeah. So the mixing I think is still maybe off there. Um, but it was a good, I think it's a good feature to have available. I would hope that eventually they'll get, they'll have it so you can listen to either team's radio feed, not just the home team. Yeah. I mean, that'd be great.
00:24:39
Speaker
But it seems better than it was. Yeah, I thought so. And more consistent across the league, like even for ourselves, video quality is already better.
00:24:50
Speaker
I will see when it's here, but I mean, I think we were probably broadcasting in 1080p, but it wasn't the most beautiful. Our production otherwise was good. Yeah. We had this sort of the same situation where they said they were broadcasting in high def, but it didn't always come out that way on the TV.
00:25:11
Speaker
I listened to Brian Dunseth last night. I thought him and Max Brettos, that's your old color announcer, or Dunseth is. I thought they were great. I thought they sounded great in Portland. Yeah, Dunny's great. One, he's a super nice guy and very friendly to everyone who meets him.
00:25:31
Speaker
And very supportive of just random fans getting access. Yeah. Which is really cool and not something you see in American sports a lot from like commentary teams, because I mean, it's not their job, but it creates personality, right? I'm sad it's not on every broadcast now, but you know, it is what it is. And do you still have is it is it Bill Riley? Is that the
00:25:54
Speaker
Yeah, he's on one of our local radio stations, but notably not on the one that we're using for our local radio broadcast. We switched from ESPN 700, a little inside baseball year, which was owned by Deloitte Hanson and still is actually. And it didn't come over in the acquisition.
00:26:15
Speaker
in part because Ryan Smith, part owner, also owns a local sports radio affiliate in Salt Lake City. So that created some slight awkwardness. But actually, it's a sister company of the company I work for who is doing the radio broadcast. So I guess it's in the family now. All right, well. Yeah, you know. Good times in RSL who
RSL's Competitive Edge and Future Outlook
00:26:42
Speaker
continue to put out a very competitive and intriguing product, despite sometimes their best efforts, it seems. Yeah, it is very intriguing. Speaking of intriguing and Apple TV, have you watched Severance yet? I have, yeah. OK, good. I just think everyone should watch it. It's the most beautiful show I've ever seen. I thought there was going to be a soccer angle coming out of that. No, but it does star noted Star Trek alumni, Adam Scott.
00:27:12
Speaker
I did not even realize Adam Scott was in Sturgis. I mean, alumni might be a stretch. He has like three seconds on screen in one of the movies. I didn't know that. The things you learn. I'll give you another Adam Scott trivia. My stepmom is like really good friends with his mom. Oh, that's really cool.
00:27:33
Speaker
Yeah, which I've never met Adam Scott, but I feel like I should somehow feel like I got to be able to engineer this to. Yeah. Do you think he looks like soccer? You could have him on the podcast. That's a great question. Now that he's like an Apple TV guy, so maybe he's inclined to want to get involved in all this. I like Matt. This is a really good thought. I'm going to have to do some research and see what I can do. Yeah. I'm excited to listen when you put it out.
00:27:59
Speaker
Yeah. Don't want to get it. Get everyone's hopes. This will be a couple of weeks from now. I'm sure we'll have to ask God on the podcast. I love it. Good for you. I'm really excited for you.
00:28:11
Speaker
Thank you, Matt. Thank you for putting that into the world. Hopefully we could make something happen there. So if Adam Scott happens to be listening to this podcast, get in touch with get in touch with my people. I mean, he's probably an LFC fan. Oh, stop. You know, he grew up in Santa Cruz. So maybe he's an earthquakes fan. So maybe poor guy.
00:28:32
Speaker
I doubt he's an earthquake. He must've listened. Nobody is. Certainly not in Santa Cruz, which is beautiful, but not someplace that a lot of people are driving from to go to earthquakes games. Yeah, I don't blame them. Nor do I. Nor do I.
00:28:50
Speaker
But anyway, Matt, thank you so much for coming on here and talking. Again, the website is Wasatch Soccer Sentinel, or just Wasatch Soccer. Wasatch.Soccer is the address. Yeah, that's the domain. Everyone should have a .Soccer domain. Right.
00:29:08
Speaker
Yeah, I totally agree. And then off the crossbar is the podcast, which I'm going to as when I, when I hang up this call, I'm going to subscribe to it just to, you know, cause I realize I need to, I need more, more fun podcasts in my feed. Do you have a game of, do you have a tabletop game recommendation for us? I feel like I always, I just threw this out there, but I feel like you're well equipped to answer that on the spot.
00:29:32
Speaker
Yeah, I mean, one of my favorite games over the last two years has been The Crew. It's a cooperative, quick-taking card game. Super popular now. Incredible fun. One of my top games of all time. Oh, good. And what's the age? What's an appropriate age for this game?
00:29:49
Speaker
Um, I mean, it depends on the kid. Like I'd say if they can get card strategy and like classic card games, you know, uh, spades or hearts, then they, they should be fine. So I'd say 10 and up is probably very appropriate, but it depends on the 10 year old, I guess. Yeah. I'm not one and I don't have one, but some of them were very precocious. That's true. I think I was. So.
00:30:15
Speaker
Yeah, I don't, I don't, I'll leave that I have a 10 year old, but I'm going to just not comment on her precociousness. All right. So I think that's fair. Yeah. All right. Well, uh, Matt, thank you so much for doing this. It's always a pleasure. Uh,
