Why is Time Management Crucial in Pottery?

00:00:38
Speaker
In this episode, I'm going to be talking about time and why it's important and how to manage it in this episode.
00:00:46
Speaker
So recently I posted a question to the Pottery Heads Facebook group and in that group I posted the question, what is your biggest struggle when it comes to discovering your own voice? And a lot of comments came in and a lot of people said things like, I don't have
00:01:09
Speaker
I don't I can't pick which style I like to choose. And a lot of other things, you know, like pressure, and like not thinking they're good enough. But one of the things that kept on coming in and in and in and in over and over and over and over again, was time. They all said, I don't have the time to be experimenting, I don't have the time to just make pottery. And while
00:01:34
Speaker
This can be true to some extent, but I don't think it is completely true. I think people are just managing their time wrong. Here is my take on this. We all have the same amount of time, and you see other people making time to make pottery, even if they have kids, they have a job, and whatever.
00:02:02
Speaker
they still make time to make pottery.

How to Effectively Manage Time for Pottery

00:02:06
Speaker
And if you're not making time to actually make pottery and to experiment, then you're never going to find your voice. You're never going to start getting good at making pottery. And you're just never going to be able to eventually, if you want to, sell your pottery because you're not making the time to actually practice making pottery.
00:02:27
Speaker
which is why it's super, super important to just practice. Make the time. We make time for things all the time. And trust me, I make the same mistake. When I'm done recording episodes and editing and making pottery, I usually like to
00:02:47
Speaker
watch TV. And I watch TV for probably a lot longer than a lot of people. But it's the same thing with other people. They do the same thing. But the difference is that I still make time to do things that I really like and enjoy. How do you make this time?
00:03:07
Speaker
Well, I'll give you two things for you. The first one is called batching and batching is pretty much like, think of it like when you have a lot of clothes in your dirty hamper and then you don't just take one piece of clothing and put it into the washer and then you wash that by itself. No, you take all of your clothes from the basket and you put it and you throw it into the washer.
00:03:36
Speaker
And then you do that until you have all your clothes clean, all the towels clean, all whatever clean. You don't just do one clothing or one towel at a time. That would be such a waste of energy, time, and it would just take so much longer. So it's the same thing with pottery. If you can just schedule a day, it could be one day a week. That's it. One day a week where you just focus on nothing but making pottery.
00:04:04
Speaker
And it could be from like 10 in the morning to like 12 or one. That's three hours. That's three hours a week that you can start making pottery, start experimenting, start doing whatever. If you just learn to batch your time a little bit better.

Daily Practices for Pottery Mastery

00:04:22
Speaker
Now, the second way to manage your time different is what I like to call is or I should call it is the atomic habits. I don't know the law of it.
00:04:34
Speaker
but basically is that you're doing simple little things every single day so that you get better and better and better and better eventually where you get to the point where you want. Now let's say you are making pottery for just one hour every single day and you say you don't have the time to
00:04:57
Speaker
be able to experiment, what if instead of going in making pottery that you think will try to sell for that entire hour, what if you take 10 minutes of that hour, 15 minutes of that hour, and you just experiment with your pottery, experiment with some different shapes, experiment with carving, whatever, just experiment during those 15 minutes, set a timer for 15 minutes, and you just experiment.
00:05:25
Speaker
and you experiment and experiment and you just let whatever comes into your mind and you just roll with it all during those 15 minutes. And you have the rest of the 45 minutes to actually make the party that you're trying to sell. Now, imagine you do that every single day for a month. You know how many hours that is? If you're just doing 10 minutes a day of just experimenting, that's 300 hours.
00:05:52
Speaker
minutes, sorry, 300 minutes that you have practiced experimenting. Imagine if you do that every single day for the next year. That's 3650 minutes that you have practiced just experimenting and trying to develop your voice.

Conclusion and Listener Engagement

00:06:12
Speaker
That is it. It doesn't have to take that much effort. You're just thinking about it all wrong. So I hope this helps you manage your time a little bit better.
