Speaker: Come on. Hey, O'Shaughness. Let's The Seattle Sounders have done it. MLS Cup winners. The Sounders rule the region.

Speaker: Ooch of a gooch! All creatures, great and small! Rothrock gonna collect it, he does about, runs into the advertising order. Low to our left, ball goes in! Oh, what a Where's my copy? got bunch of them How many do you cost them? 50 bucks.

Speaker: Welcome back to another episode of Nos Adietes on the Sounder Heart Podcast Network. It is Friday. we are here in Sounder at Heart headquarters, and I am joined by Nico Moreno for another episode of what we learned this week. Nico, it's been a week been a roller coaster that ah at this time feels like continues to go downhill. Yeah. And so there is a level of concern, but I am always happy to be on with you, with our audience, ready to hopefully provide, you know, more insight, more information about what is going on and and how this team can shake off this this bad vibes and then this bad run of play that are currently under. Well, it's fun. Results, right? not Yeah, yeah, yeah.

Speaker: You know, you go back a couple weeks, and if you had asked me what's more likely to happen, that the Sounders get home field advantage in the Western Conference or they miss the playoffs, and I would have told you 100% more likely that they were to get home field advantage because I thought making the playoffs was an absolute given.

Speaker: There was no doubt in my mind, even after the Dallas loss, that this team was a playoff team. And I thought this is a, I thought if anything, this was a team that was getting ready to put it all together.

Speaker: And we, this is the way, and we talked about this going into that two game road trip at new England at Dallas. We said, this is where the sounders need to show up to show us if they're real contenders. And for me, they did. They showed us that obviously there was a warning sign when they dropped points to Montreal there But then I honestly thought that they put it back together pretty well. I thought that was a strong showing against San Diego. I continue to believe that they deserve three points in that game.

Speaker: But then the Houston game honestly came out of, felt like it came out of nowhere. It wasn't that they were so bad. It was just that they seemed to fall totally into Houston's trap.

Speaker: Let's just count off a few things. Houston had never won in Lumen Field, 17 trips to Lumen Field. They were winless in 17 trips, going all the way back to 2009. They were winless in 11 games this, or no, I'm sorry. They were winless in 11 straight against the Sounders at both,

Speaker: ah Houston and Lumen Field. They had not won a game in seven in in league play. They were only won one of their last 11 in league play. On top of that, they're missing Guillerme.

Speaker: They were missing Hector Herrera. And just for cheering on top, Ben Olsen, their head coach, was also suspended, although it did open the door for Ezra Hendrickson, the former Sounders assistant, to come in.

Speaker: But there was the deck was about as stacked against... and and by the way, they were also coming traveling to Seattle in short rest. The deck was completely stacked against them. They came into this game ready to play 0-0, best case scenario. sure They were not looking to do a smash and grab at all. And you saw that in their gameplay. And to the Sounders' credit, I think...

Speaker: Throughout the game and even from the start, the Sounders were very good in the counterpress. They were doing – I think they were doing they were going through the motions correctly of trying to force errors, of trying to sort of pin Houston back.

Speaker: And then they've – then Houston finally gets ah their first and only corner kick of the match, which I have not gone back and checked this, but Brian Schmetzer insisted that the guy was offside when they won that corner.

Speaker: Neither here nor there. And they send in a decent corner, but it goes just over the head of Seba Gomez and Jan Jovlich. It goes right between Kalani Kosarianzi and Jackson Reagan.

Speaker: On the backside, Hassani Dawson is getting picked. So he somewhat loses his man. Yes, he does. And it falls basically perfectly for, I can't remember the guy's name that scored it, but... ah ah her herta something like that. there was The Brazilian center back yeah that came in and, you know, I kind of felt like he was getting paid a little bit too much money to be quite frank. And, but he's scored that but he he's scored ah the header. Yeah.

Speaker: Actually, he's one of the guys that was interesting because I was thinking that um Antonio Carlos which little was going to start again, the former Orlando city defender who I read pretty highly. And he, he wasn't even in the line. It was a totally rotated lineup. Halter. Yeah, Halter.

Speaker: And then from then on, the Sounders were basically just driving up against a stone wall. Houston almost literally had 11 behind the ball the entire time. They had eight guys in the penalty area most of the time. They were basically just daring the Sounders to do something.

Speaker: And, you know, I don't want to say the Sounders lacked effort. I don't want to say they lack desire, but they did lack a quality in the final third to really do anything. And then finally, over the last, like from the 89th minute on, so the last five minutes of the game or so, they did get a couple of decent chances, but it was like none of them were great chances. There were a few good chances, but ah the stats end up telling a pretty compelling story in that,

Speaker: Sounders had like 70% of possession. They had something like 90% field tilt. They had almost two XG to the dynamos 0.2 or something. They only took two shots. The dynamos only took two shots.

Speaker: ah I mean, the dynamos were parking the bus as parking the bus gets. Let me start with my general sense on the team because you touched on both that and the game.

Speaker: I am on DEFCON 1. I said this on cuther ten years today. It is the British are coming territory. It is panic button. DEFCON 1, to be clear, DEFCON 1 is the top. it's Yeah, all of it. I'm there. You're at the top. I'm there. There's a nuclear war. Nuclear war. I mean, it's it's already there. And, you know, I was asked, you know, Panikin is a 9 out of 10. And I said 9. And the reason why I 9 out of 10, including everything I just said, is because I just want a little bit of room just in case this team loses against Vancouver. they're in a liberal must-win game. and this Exactly. yeah Totally. So that's the only reason. but But this is it, man. And everything you said is what worries me, is –

Speaker: The only consistent team about this Sounders team this season is their inconsistency. We're used to seeing this team having bad starts, but then they figure it out at the end of the season or the other way, you know, they start pretty hot and then they go downhill and they try to figure it out and they fight through and kind of barely get in or they get in decently, but there's never this roller coaster of just up and down, up and down.

Speaker: you know, What I saw against Houston, losing to this team for the very first time in their history at home ever. Yeah. Right? Yeah.

Speaker: Going to eighth place. So dropping to eighth place. Yeah. But mainly... Me walking into that press conference and seeing Brian, to to what I felt like looked defeated. Frazzled. He definitely seemed off his game. And maybe it wasn't. We'll talk about this later. He did announce that Alex Caulfield, ah the longtime, don't know, ah comms director of the team, is leaving. And he's been more than just the comms director. He's really been the sounding board that a lot of people in the organization

Speaker: good ask questions of, and he's got, you know, he's, he's a soccer guy. we and we will, we, or I don't want to talk about it right now, but we will talk about it. Uh, but there was some emotion. It felt like there a rawness about to the way he felt, but he felt totally different version of Brian than we've seen. Yeah. Especially but the the lack of, or the honesty of just saying, I don't know. Right. I mean, uh, Diego ah Palomino asked a question that ended up kind of talking about specifically this, like what has gone wrong and in this season to be such a rollercoaster. And he he just, he, he, doesn't always say, I don't know. And he was like, oh I have no idea, you know? And so it was that. And then walking into the locker room where you could hear, you could hear a needle, you know, drop into the ground. Yeah.

Speaker: just leads me to a team that is going through it. I mean, that was a gut-wrenching loss. So sometimes it's even harder to figure out what's wrong when you are the better team in the last three or four games and you still can't get a result because you can't pinpoint what it is.

Speaker: We go to quality. We go to finishing. i mean, those are aspects of the game. But how do you fix that repetition? Guys getting to the right rhythm. But you have two games left.

Speaker: Two games left out of the season, right? Brian said we're running out of run space, right? We were running out of room, runway. yeah That's what it is. There's no time to to lift off. so So that's why, to me, it's panic mode. To me, it's you've got to figure it out.

Speaker: But it's going to take this team getting out of its own way. In this particular game, that corner kick, there's three mistakes that I want to point out.

Speaker: One, and this is decision-making, the ball...

Speaker: there's a long ball going towards the Sounders on third, and Kalani has time to either head the ball back into the goalkeeper, Jackson Reagan is coming across, and...

Speaker: with no pressure. I mean, was there a guy coming probably, but maybe 10, 15 yards behind them. And he decides to knock it out of bounds yeah into a corner kick. That corner kick ends up being the goal, right? So that's one, two, three,

Speaker: If you're Deke and Seba, you got to communicate. That ball should have never got to as far as it got because they should have intercepted that ball. Anybody in soccer will tell you that if on a corner the ball bounces inside the 18, you're doing something terribly wrong. So that is... You're talking on the actual On the actual corner, right? The corner gets delivered.

Speaker: Seba and Dajon, they see it. They kind of get in each other's way. They both whiff on it. And so the ball drops because... Jackson Rick is kind of being pinned back. um Brian called it a pick. I don't think he didn't get, I think he got confused. I think Dotson was on Dotson. So the the pick is on Dotson and Dotson, he does get picked off, but you got to continue to fight. And Dotson is a fighter. He's a good defensive standard player, but I don't think he expected the ball to drop where he did. And then he's two steps back and can never recover to get in front of a halter to stop that goal. So three, three,

Speaker: huge mistakes. And that was the game. that That was the the entire game because it allowed Houston not just to feel like they have a lifeline. They felt like they believed, but they knew the game plan moving forward.

Speaker: right We're going to go deep. We're going to go in a deep block, five-man back line, get us out of there, bunker down. And the Sounders are historically bad at breaking bunkers, at breaking that sort of deep team that's just going to put a lot of numbers behind the ball and you're not going to be able to get through to them. That's the way you lost in the playoffs last season. So unfortunately for the Sounders, it has been inflicted wound after self-inflicted wound after self-inflicted wound.

Speaker: So you got to get out of your way. It's about doing the little things right. It's about getting this team in the right direction. But that game, it was it was kind of a nutshell of of what has gone wrong with this team all season. Right. And they just, you know, they for all the dominance that they had, they did not create a lot of chances.

Speaker: ah you know they They had a couple of good, decent looks in the first half. There was a shot by Ferreira that ends up hitting right at the goalkeeper, that but he hit it hard enough and awkward enough that it it sort of got behind him.

Speaker: There was the Rusnak shot that he put just wide. I guess there was a Roldan shot that... goes wide as well right and then there was maybe the best chance was ah a corner that jackson reagan got what pretty wide open on it and he just did not make good connection on it that happened twice actually it happened again at the end of the game where he got on the end of a ball that seems like he should have been able to do more with and he didn't And he had one in Dallas. don't know you remember that. Right. you Yeah. He had one against Dallas that you. Couldn't believe didn't go in. Exactly. So. Yeah. He has to work on that. He definitely has to work on his heading. And it all leads up to the Sounders are so are facing two games where they don't need to win both of these. But they, my suspicion is they need at least two points from these two games to get into the, just to get into the playoffs. Mm-hmm.

Speaker: And if they lose to Vancouver, they probably need to beat LAFC in the season finale. Now they can still get up to, you know, I think six is not out of the realm of possibility if they if they were to beat Vancouver. But they just need to get back on the winning streak. And one of the things that has been happening...

Speaker: ah during these last four games is they just really can't catch a break. And, you know, we oftentimes talk about how ah luck is the confluence of ah effort meeting or opportunity meeting. ah You got to put yourself in the position to be lucky.

Speaker: And the Sounders have just not been able to really catch a break, though. You know, this game was ah another example where Decky gets... the the ah The defender just runs into Deki. He wraps him up as a cross is coming in.

Speaker: And the referee just sort of waves it on. VAR did look at it. but they ultimately didn't recommend a review. and And we can kind just go through the film of the last three games of say like every big call that could have gone against the Sounders seems to have gone against the Sounders.

Speaker: Obviously the San Diego game, we talked a lot about the, the Montreal game. There's the penalty shout right at the end where Christian rolled on gets kicked in the face. There's no call.

Speaker: And anyway, we, we can kind of go through that, but the centers aren't, they're putting themselves in a position where they need to get a break. And that's the, every one of these games, they've been able, if they had just been more clinical, that if they had been more ruthless, they would not have to be looking for the referees to have a part in the result. And, and so they really don't have anyone to blame, but themselves at the same time, they've not been awful.

Speaker: You know, they they have only lost one game since. So they lost the first two games after the break by at least two goals. They lost the it was the the Portland game and then the vancout was the Vancouver game right after that. I guess it was.

Speaker: And ah and then they've lost one other game by two goals since then. So they they've been competitive. They lost this one by one. They had two ties in a row and then they lost another game. They lost the the Dallas game by one. So the team is not suddenly bad, but they are continuing to play on this fine, fine line between good and bad.

Speaker: And when you're on that, when you have no margin for error, it's going to break the wrong way sometimes. And he tends to do so more often than not Unfortunately, unfortunately,

Speaker: In order to get the objective, which is a win. Right. you So you continue to drop points. And it's unfortunate because the Sounders were – they had a ton of chances and scenarios where they would clinched i play a playoff spot already. They should and should have absolutely already clinched. yeah And they haven't. So so that that is the biggest worry because, look – I like to think they're very consistent with what I say. And so after the New England game, I say that that the boys are back and they are back, but these are the boys. That's the problem. This is the team i mean that you have available for you. And, and if you can't,

Speaker: feed and build off of that momentum, then then then there's an issue, and that's what what it's been. So I want to talk about a couple of things in regards to this game, which continues to be concerning, right? We've talked about we don't know what the 11 is.

Speaker: Time is up. we You got to figure it out. I think that the biggest question mark at this point is wingers, who should be the winger or not. Seba Gomez played this game, and – have praised him, maybe us, maybe not as much as others, or at least me. think he's been good, especially coming off from the bench and stuff, but I still had my doubts of him starting the game. It's very different. I've said it a thousand times. I'm not going repeat it, but coming off as a sub, he's been very successful. And I think that that is a formula for success in this particular game. And I don't want to just put it on him because I also heard a lot of, uh,

Speaker: people upset and and trying to, you know, crucify Jesus during this game. But when the collective is not good, the players are not good. And and Seppa, he was not good. He looked active, but...

Speaker: He was not effective. he did He was dispossessed consistently on the left side. He didn't do anything to stand. He was 0 for 6 on crosses. crosses into And we got to talk about the crosses because I don't even have the stats on how many crosses they put into this game. But it looked like they were just throwing him into an abyss. Just shooting him into this dark hole that that that was the 18 where it was either getting clear or going absolutely nowhere.

Speaker: So that's another point. concern of mine. You need to be able to figure out who's going to put it together. i can only guess that considering the magnitude of the games and the necessity of Vancouver to push their fullbacks, that Jordan Morris is going to start this game because there's belief there, there's experience, and you know as much as He's dealing with some pains and aches. You know, he came in late in in the last game. I think that they're kind of holding him for that Vancouver game. So I think he'll start. And maybe that resolves your problem, but you got to stick to an 11. And so in this particular game, I think that you could poke holes at just about anybody on the field with the exception of maybe Christian Roldan.

Speaker: But it's a problem, Jeremiah, because I don't know it should be Paula Riola starting on the left side. we are no closer to knowing who this team's best 11 is than we were...

Speaker: Three weeks ago. ah Yeah, seven for 37, I believe, is what they were on crosses. That is not good. No, it's not good. and it's a lot And the problem was that it was a lot of floated crosses against a set defense. It wasn't, you know, Brian talks about this all the time, that it's like crosses are not bad, but you've got to hit them.

Speaker: Against a retreating defense. Sure. You got to hit early early crosses. Early crosses. and And the Sounders were not hitting early crosses in this game. They were just basically throwing crosses into the box and hoping something good would happen.

Speaker: ah Nothing good did happen. No. And you had a couple of six-footers, right? I mean, Agustin Rich and Halter are both big guys. yeah And then they brought in Antonio Carlo, who's also a big guy. right So you you had Joval is trying to – find his way. And then once he's out, I mean, there was just no creativity. There was none. There was not a lot of creativity. Very little endeavor in terms of guys wanting to take on, you know, there was a couple, maybe the best moment, and Brian talked about this today, was when Jesus did this little backheel that put

Speaker: that almost put Rusnak in and Bond made a nice play to come off his line to to get it. But that was like the one example of creative play that the Sounders had all that. And I'm with you. I don't think Jesus Ferreira was the Sounders biggest problem.

Speaker: I don't know if I would say that any one player was their biggest problem. I don't know that anyone was awful, but I do think we saw like, to your point, Sebastian Gomez is much more effective coming off the bench against tired legs.

Speaker: I don't think he's the guy that they need to be starting. I think more likely it's probably Areola or Ferreira Morris and Morris, you know, Morris, you know, did okay. I thought in his, limited tools he got a couple of decent chances.

Speaker: He could have done a little bit better on those, but ah you know, he was also just, you know, he was basically in there to just be chaotic. There wasn't a lot of, At the end of the game, kind of similar to the Montreal game, they basically had just thrown the kitchen sink at it and the everyone that they could get onto the field in offensive positions. Areola playing left back. ah You know, Brunel was in there.

Speaker: Decky was in. It was it was like Caden Clark was in there to just be. i don't even know if Caden Clark had a position other than find the ball and and try to get it into the box. But it was it was just sort of chaos, and that's sort of what it's it's come down to right now, is that the Sounders are just sort of like hoping something happens. And I will say this. I i don't want to come off across as overly critical because I don't want to be overcritical over this particular player. I did not get to talk to Dejan day john today i I got there a little bit later, so I just listened to what you guys asked. But I did want to ask him a little bit of how –

Speaker: he could maybe Is he frustrated mentally? Does he feel like it's affecting his his play? Because he's been able to score and he is scoring off of low percentage shots that he has the ability to do, which is phenomenal. is great It's great. It's something that you want to have as a resource, but you don't want it to be the the only way you can do, right? So I do feel like he needs to do a little more in my opinion. I think he's link up and passing has not been great. ah He had one opportunity in this game late in the 18, but he kind of came when he wasn't expecting it. So he doesn't quite connect the way he wants. And so,

Speaker: when you are the guy, because he is the guy, he's the one we're waiting for. He's a phenomenal signing. He continues to be, but that responsibility of goals, when you walk into a team and you say, I'm going to score a lot of goals, it's on you.

Speaker: Right. he So yeah, he did and he did, he did talk about that a little bit today. And he, you know, I asked him if he's frustrated at, cause I don't think it's necessarily all on him. I think the Sounders have not done a great job of finding him, that's fair putting him in positions to succeed. And he basically said like,

Speaker: yeah he He gave a very political answer, which was, I'm confident that we're going to get better the more we play together, but I know I said that I came here to score goals, and my expectation is that I'm going to score more goals than I have been scoring, essentially is the ah the abridged version of what he said.

Speaker: But yeah, i mean i do think that that is a problem. ah The Sounders have not done much to maximize Deke's skill set. He has done, i think he's done extraordinary to make the most out of his opportunities outside of the Dallas game where he had, ah ironically, the Dallas game is the one game where he had a bunch of looks and he didn't score, yeah but he's scored a bunch in the games where he hasn't had a lot of good looks.

Speaker: ah And the other thing that's kind of frustrating is his first goal with the Sounders was exactly the kind of goal we thought we were going to be getting a ton of where he basically just puts away a good cross. He makes ah a nice run to the near post and he any he who was it? I guess it was Kalani that gave him that pass.

Speaker: I don't know. i want to say it was Seba. I don't know maybe it was Maybe it was Seba. But either way, we thought he was going to be... I thought that was going to be the whole thing. he is... i don't know if he's had maybe one similar chance since then. But that is... He's symbolic, I think, of the Sounders' struggles. ah That said...

Speaker: We did find out to or we we had been told this week that Paul Rothrock was likely going to be back today. Schmetzer confirmed that Rothrock will be available against the Whitecaps. And that I don't mean I certainly don't think he's going to just step in and be the starter.

Speaker: I would be surprised if he starts either of these last two games. But that is another player who they're going to probably be working into the rotation is. I don't know exactly how it is all fits together right now.

Speaker: ah Because i think we would, ah we've talked about this. We agree that their most talented group is probably Morris on the left, Rusnak in the middle and Ferrer on the right. Right.

Speaker: I don't know that we're going to see, we maybe we'll see that formation against the white caps, but if it doesn't work against the white caps, I don't know that there's any reason to keep trying it because they, they need to figure out a formation that works for everybody. And that's the,

Speaker: Funny part about this whole, you know, why does Nico, like, he's so locked in on Jesus playing that right winger position. It's because of the system. And so, look, I love Aaron Campbell. He does a great job with you. I happen to listen to a bit of you guys' his show, and he's talking about how he wons brian ah he wants Jordan to be a winger, and so he wants him on the right side. Well, if you want him to be a winger, he can be in the right side. Because that's not in the way we right that's not right they play.

Speaker: That's not the way the right side works. The right side needs to be in the inside channels. So the guy that comes being the widest player is Kalani Kozoriensi, who, by the way, that was another player that in this game, his delivery, I haven't looked at the stats, but his delivery into the box was not very good. So I thought that um it was it was ironic. It was ironic that... that Brian talked about Kalani doing all the running, which he did. i'm not saying he didn't. yeah But you also got to be able to bring put in quality services into the box. And I don't think that was done effectively. and so Yeah, he was 0 for 2 on crosses. 0 for 2. Well, I thought down. thought it was more. Maybe maybe i overlooked at it. But so that's what it is.

Speaker: If you want Jordan to be a winger, then he has to play on the left side. That's where he's supposed to play. That's why you have a lockdown defender as a left back, as new, because you don't want him getting forward. you don't want him to be your outlet. The outlet has to be that widest player on the left side. so Thank you for listening to the Soundrart Podcast Network, which recently added Monday Soundcheck to our roster of shows. Well, and I guess this is this is an interesting, there was an interesting wrinkle in this game and it didn't necessarily work great, but I do wonder if it's worth trying this out is at halftime, Brian Spencer replaced new who with Paul area as the left back. And area was not just, you know, he, he was not just a winger in this game. He was dropping back actually quite about, I got to give some credit to the Sounders attackers in general.

Speaker: We saw Albert Rusnak tracking back all the way back into own box a couple times. Christian once again was playing some center back. We saw a lot of the attacking players showing a willingness to defend and do things that are not their best skillset.

Speaker: And so I do think that so there is some positive to be taken from that. They're still bought in that they're still doing their best to win, but more broadly, is it worth seeing if they can just, if, if putting Paul Areola at left back is a gamble that they can afford to take, because they do need to figure out a way to create more offense. And as much as,

Speaker: Brian said knew who getting pulled was not ah disciplinary. He said he wasn't horrible. He says he wasn't horrible. And he said it was more of a tactical change. But there was two plays that drove me a little crazy with who one of them was right on like the first possession. He tried to do this spin move in his own end. That was bad. He gets picked. And that led to ah a decent chance for Houston right away, right out of the gate. And then he, see yeah he takes a three, five yard shot.

Speaker: where what do you think the center's had possession and I guess there was no one guarding like there was he had an open shot he was 35 yards out what do you do why why would you take that shot he said nobody's pressing me I'm gonna have it yeah I'm gonna have it it's like What are you doing? I think i think he he went back to when he almost scores that free kick yeah against Montreal, was it?

Speaker: No, it was before that. It was a home game. yeah And I feel like that might have done him some some bad, like giving you a false sense of security of far range shots. And yes, I'm with you. That that was ah a bad decision. Yeah. And, and I don't want to make it sound like new who is the biggest problem, oh no but look, I don't know who, I don't know that there is a player who is the biggest problem.

Speaker: The whole point is that the sounders need to do something that collectively brings up the group. And if that means Paul are all at left back, maybe, maybe that's it. I'm not saying that's 100% the answer, but that's gotta be something that's at least worth trying.

Speaker: They tried it against Houston and, Houston admittedly was not doing a lot of attacking, but he showed that he could be an honest left back, that he wasn't just in there to spam in crosses. He he was he was playing an an honest position.

Speaker: And I do wonder if it's something that Brian is almost going to have to look at. i would have I would imagine at the very least, he wouldn't be he wouldn't be reluctant to try it at halftime again if the Sounders are chasing a goal. Because they i mean they do have to treat this game, these next two games, I think they have to treat them like must-win games. Yeah, look, I did think that maybe when we were kind of discussing who's coming out because we knew yeah the players that were coming in ah for a second, and going back to watching game a second time, it would have been interesting, although he did very well. So this is not an indictment on on on Albert, but I wanted to maybe see if he would put a he you would have pulled Albert and put Jesus at the 10. I think it's worth a shot. Just to force, because Seattle became...

Speaker: predictable yeah and and and almost one-dimensional, just trying to cross the ball in and into the obis that we talked about. I think if you would have maybe put Ferreira there at that 10, he's a lot more dynamic on on attack than than Albert. He likes to...

Speaker: i don't know if you've ever seen him. He like short pass, long pass, he moves around. Right. So he kind of pulls the game centrally and maybe that ah pattern play in some of that combination that, you know, I asked Brian about top of the box, maybe that would have broken down the, the, the low block a little bit better, but here or there, it goes back to, you got to figure out what it is that works best. And, and honestly,

Speaker: whatever 11 you go with against Vancouver, maybe should be the one that you take into LAFC just to stick with something, right just to stick with set of players that are going to have continuity that are going to understand how to play. Cause you're talking about Dejan saying, look, I'm still trying to fit in and you have a rotating doors of wingers and you have a rotating doors of ah guys behind you, it just adds, adds and adds to this situation.

Speaker: Lack of understanding of the game. Yeah. Yeah. I mean, something is, is off. Something's going to have to change. I don't know what kind of run the sounders have even mean in a best case scenario, but you're not going to find out unless you're in the playoffs.

Speaker: You're not going get into the playoffs unless you get some results. So it's, it's step by step here. We can't get wrapped up and thinking too big at this point. It's just about getting points in these next two games and And then taking whatever comes next and and just hoping, hoping for the best, I suppose, which is not, I'm people hate the word hope. Uh, I think because it makes it feel like there's not a plan, but that's sort of where we are right now. it is. It is. Um,

Speaker: One last thing, you know, as as we move forward is Paul's probably the last guy that you might get back, right? Yamar, he's going to be off. Maybe for the playoffs. Maybe for the playoffs, right? They said four weeks. We saw him out there, you know, working hard, just like ah Paul Rothrock. He was obviously more with the team, but I wouldn't expect him back. So,

Speaker: How quickly do you bring in Paul Barthra? Let me rephrase it. What sort of use can you get out of Paul Barthra? Maybe not just this game, but here on out.

Speaker: I mean, i think you you probably want to give him 15 to 20 minutes in this game, and then maybe you give him 30 in the next game, and then who knows after that. But I think you've got – the the reality is that no one has taken the position in a way that says, this is mine. And,

Speaker: it is is mine and and So I think you got to give Rothrock at least some look. We, you know, he is maybe an emotional lift for this team. he is a guy who, you know, even though he's not demonstrative, he can be, i think, you know, people find comfort in his willingness to just do stuff. He, he, he, he is someone who can make magic on occasion, which is something that the Sounders have really lacked in the last few games. Yeah. So I think you got to give him some time, right? i think so. ah i He is a explosive player. So I worry to just let him...

Speaker: In a game that you might need a score, do you put him in 15 minutes? I think you've got to be very careful. So if the data's there and he's clear to go, I would say yes, at least 15 minutes to see where he's at. You've read about something. His superpower has always been...

Speaker: what he provides, he uplifts the team when comes to emotionally. He's a very good defender. He's physical. He's a headache for the opposition, which I love. We don't really have a headache right now, I think. Headache type player that's just going to bother you and get in your head. And I feel like he does that very well. So, yeah, I would like to see him get in, but I do feel like in my humble opinion, ah you do got to have him earn his spot back. I think that Paul Arriola right now is a guy that I really feel like earned a lot more minutes, earned at least a look on that side. So between him and Jordan are are what I kind of would go with for these next two games, just because of the magnitude.

Speaker: Unless you do that as well. And you know what? not going to touch that one because I swear that Brian wouldn't do it. Like, I don't think Brian's going to walk up to New and say, hey, you know what? We're going to bench at this this game. I mean, ah that is a tough conversation to have. I'll tell you right now. i agree. i agree. All right, well, let's ah move on a little bit from this game. And ah today, this week, MLS made a pretty big announcement. they They unveiled the schedule for the 2027 sprint season. And just in case you haven't been paying attention, the sprint season is going to be the mini season that bridges ah the current schedule to the next schedule, which will be a spring or a a summer to spring.

Speaker: they They call it summer to spring. spring yeah I guess that's how you would call it. The 2728 season. So it's going to only be 14 games long. ah And the way the the season is structured is every.

Speaker: Every team plays the other 14 teams in their conference one time. obviously split home and away. And, and we found out the Sounders schedule in this one.

Speaker: And I don't know what I would have expected from it, but I think it's, it's not the worst in the world. ah They hope like among the, among the notable games that they're going to host, they're hosting Portland and they're hosting LAFC.

Speaker: The same week, four days apart, which is kind of kind of annoying. ah But then they have you know their away schedule. feels pretty manageable. They're away at Minnesota. February 28th in Minnesota, we might be getting the first ah Orange Ball Sounders game, I believe. That'd be pretty... yeah Interesting, but I don't think that these players are going to do well. that That's conditions. what Rain's one thing. Snow and frigid temperatures is another. Have you hit a ball in the snow? Because I have. And that thing is just like a piece of ice. It's pretty funny because there was all this conversation when they unveiled the schedule, ah you know, because there was obviously a lot of consternation among cold weather fan bases about having to play in in winter. And here we are, the second game of the season,

Speaker: They're playing Minnesota at Minnesota. Like what happened? Are we, are we, are you not actually making these attempts? But then they also are away at Austin. They're away at Vancouver.

Speaker: They're away at Colorado in March, which is another game that could theoretically have snow. And then they're away at Houston, a away at galaxy, away at St. Louis. That's the season closer on May 8th. The season starts on February 21st.

Speaker: ah So it's ah it's a very fast season. And I think in particular, when you look at the schedule and one thing that jumps out is the first five games, uh, four of them are against teams that are currently out of the playoffs. And the, and the other one is Salt Lake who may or may not make the playoffs. So it's going to be really imperative that the Sounders get off to a strong start because the end of the schedule gets pretty, pretty rough.

Speaker: Uh, starting with the LAFC game, they play, ah six of or five of their last six against teams who are likely to make the playoffs. Maybe it's possible that all, um, actually, uh, yeah. Uh, six of those teams can in the playoffs. Yeah. I mean, but but Vancouver, that, that, that, that March 20th game. I mean, that, that, that's probably your first. That's the first real test. Yeah. First real test. Yeah. And that's in Colorado, but we've talked about this. We've talked about this a lot.

Speaker: In the sprint season, the way you start is probably the biggest thing. and There's just not that much time to recover. There isn't. So you do feel like Real Saleg a very fluid concept right now. They found their ways. They have three victories in a row. But to me...

Speaker: I don't really know what that's going to look like next year. guessing they're going to try to keep most of their players, but even that's a very, you know, fluid concept of what they look like. They have a lot of young players. So that, which is well for you, Minnesota is a team that I think do you have a history with that I think that you can beat out. I've heard the Jeboa, so my leave, i don't know if it's before the spring season or not. So there's, you know, some, some good couple of games that the Sounders can, know,

Speaker: soften into and and I think both you and I have said that this could be like a extended preseason almost where you're kind of trying to figure out Where your roster is at. Right. That's what Craig Weibel has sort of said. And I don't, I think the Sounders will likely make one or two, you know, somewhat significant moves this off season.

Speaker: i don't think they're going to do anything with their designated players. I suspect everyone that is a designated player now will be a designated player, but I think next season they're there. You like the sprint season that are going likely use it to evaluate Pedro de la Vega. They're going to use it to evaluate whether Jesus Ferreira is their number 10 of the future.

Speaker: I think they're going to evaluate what they have in Sebastian Gomez, Snyder Brunel, Stu Hawkins. These are the big things that I think they're going to have to figure out and then i think though as far as what they might do in the off season probably a yamar replacement yeah and then maybe another left back to compete with new that's a must yeah i think that they also want to add a u22 player to uh slot that in i i'm pretty sure they're open on on what that looks like, whether it's a potential new six, whether it's a left winger, I believe it's something that they were looking at because we don't really know. I don't think you can bank on Pedro de la Vega anymore. think can either. You're hoping it's kind of like a house money

Speaker: I mean, situation. It's a sunk cost is what it is. they I think that they need. I think they know. i would like to think that they know that they cannot go into the 2728 season wondering if he's ever going to get healthy.

Speaker: Like either he's healthy and he's ready to go, or you got to just pull the plug. and I hate to say it it. You do. And I hate to say it myself. I mean, they're giving him the best care possible. He looks really good. I've talked to him a couple of times, but he's such a nice kid that i don' i don't know if you can call my kid anymore, but he's such a nice guy that as I'm getting on the elevator to go down to the press box, I mean, to the press conference ah again, after the Houston game, he looked,

Speaker: Like played the game. he was upset that they lost the game. Yeah, and I'm like, hey, you okay? And was like, yeah, I mean, I just, I don't get it. Like I want to cry and I'm just like that. The guy is like, he feels like he was in there. Like my team was there. They're suffering. I can't help. Right. So that's the type guy here. So I don't know. I just want to throw that in there. Yeah, and I don't doubt, like I really am hoping, not just for the sounder's sake, but because I like Pedro. I want him to do well. I saw, know, I think we've all seen how good he can be.

Speaker: I just want to see him do it. And I, but I do think there is some practical questions there. It does sound like the centers are hoping to bring back Nikola Pekovic. I would imagine at a reduced rate, I don't imagine that they're going be paying the full transfer fee that they had negotiated already with Charlotte, but he's been training here the whole time. He's made it pretty clear that he wants to be back. The centers have made it clear that they'd like to bring him back.

Speaker: So it's just a matter of like figuring out the right price structure for bringing him back. ah Caden Clark, I don't know. ah in some ways he has been as you know, I think he's been what the Sounders thought they were going to be getting in the sense that he's had a good attitude. He's given to them energy.

Speaker: There's part of me that would really like to see what he can do if you give him a whole off season, but there is a numbers game as well, where he's taking up a U22 spot. He doesn't make a ton of money, but he is on a, you know, they can pick up his option essentially for free, but there is a ro But that's a roster spot that a senior roster spot that they wouldn't otherwise have.

Speaker: ah So there's there is going to be a little bit of a squeeze there. I was like, De Rosario scored another goal in Denmark. And <unk>s I would think he's getting pretty close to – I would imagine he's probably gone, which is probably for the best. I don't know that he has a ah role here at this point. Yeah.

Speaker: So there's going to be – there's some wiggle room in the roster, but I don't expect a lot of turnover this offseason. But i like we've been saying, i just I just really think the Sounders are looking at 27 as more of an assessment period. So let me hit you with an improv buy or sell – Three things that I want you to just specify. By the way, we' are gonna sponsor we have a new sponsor for the buy or sell segment. Oh, all right. Marnio Shan Realtor.

Speaker: ah Yes, that's my sister. But if you are interested in in a realtor, check out. Wow, I like that. ah just google her i should probably make this more informal but she wanted to sponsor this segment so we're doing buy or sell let's do it i like it buy or sell let's do it uh and we need to get that we yeah get it yeah we're gonna we'll do it more formally in the future morning appreciate what you sis though yeah appreciate you um okay so buy or sell Jordan Morris will be here to start, will be with the team to start. you see not not not Not the ah ah spring season, but the the new 2027 season. Will Jordan Morris be here? So to buy mes by means that he's here. Sell means that he's gone.

Speaker: You know... I'm going to be conservative because it just feels like if i'm if I'm really predicting this, I buy that, but I i won't be surprised if he's not.

Speaker: that's ah That's a cop-out answer. Do you have a more ah sexy answer for that one? ah Yeah, i think I think you sell. I think that... two I see two things happening. And this is with all the love and respect I have for Jordan Morris, but it's been such a excruciating season for him. he Mentally, physically,

Speaker: To me, he doesn't need to continue to do this. I know he wants to because he's passionate about the game. So whether, you know, he's gone because the team has had offers for him and there's potential for new players to play his role. He's always wanted to be a nine. That's out of the question now with Joe this year.

Speaker: He wants to be a winger. I think that there's a lot of competition there. So there is a lot of ways that the team can, you know, move on from him and even do right by him. So he doesn't have to not compete because if he's going to stay in the game and he's going to want to continue to play, he's going to want to play. And so, so when you can't promise in minutes, I think you want to do right. i mean, he's like, he is taking a DP spot. At least until he's, unless there's a new contract. But yeah, I i don't think, i i would say it's at best in the 50-50 territory whether or not he's going be back, which is a good, makes it a good buyer's home. That's what it is for me. All right, well, while we're while we're playing buyer's home, you have another one? Yes, have I have two more. ah

Speaker: Pedro De La Vega plays at least six, at least seven out of the 14 games of the spring season.

Speaker: Plays. Place. Not starts, just place.

Speaker: I'm going to buy. um i got myself in trouble last year when I tried to predict how much Pedro would play this year. Yeah. But I want, I just want to believe it. yeah I want to believe it. I want to.

Speaker: And the thing is, and this what I will say is that if he doesn't get at least seven games, there's no chance he's back in 27, 28. I think half the games is the bare minimum that the Sounders need to see from him for them to be willing to bring him back.

Speaker: Yeah, I would agree. I buy, i believe in, uh, his, uh, in the course he's taken in his discipline. He's got, he got the best possible doctor in Barcelona.

Speaker: I heard that that went phenomenal. I think he's ahead of schedule. So, yes, I think that he will play at least in half of the s spring season. Okay. And that's it. I think I did another one. Well, I did have another one, but maybe I'm going off too far out, but let's just go ahead and do it.

Speaker: Because I'm stealing this from Adam le ah Levine, by the way. Shout out. Aaron Levine. Aaron Levine. Not the singer of Maroon 5. Q13 host of Washington Sports Rap. i was like, you hanging out with Maroon 5 these days? We bawling like that. No, I'm sorry. Aaron Levine. ah Is Brian Schmetzer back for not the spring season, but the 2027 season?

Speaker: man, that's now you're putting me on the spot. Yeah, now you're really putting me as well. You know what? I'm going to sell. I'm going to sell on this one because I do think that Brian is getting to a point that he is looking for a proper exit.

Speaker: Yes. And I think that the 27-28 season would be a very convenient time. Now, i I strongly suspect that he will still be working for the organization.

Speaker: I don't know what capacity, but I am sure the Sounders will find a role for him. But I could see getting them through the 20s. First of all, we've seen this over the last few years. it It felt like at times that the job was weighing on him. The reality is that he has now been here 10. This is 10th season in charge.

Speaker: That's much longer than i mean, outside of Peter Vermees. I don't think any other MLS coach in history has been or I guess mean Ben Olsen may have been at at DC United for that long. But the the number of coaches who have been at one job for 10 years, really, really small.

Speaker: So this is season 11 that he's going into. What else does he have to prove? what ah What is he hanging on for at at that point? like i think you can make an argument that – The sprint season, he is sort of serving as the bridge to the next thing.

Speaker: But then coming into 27-28, what is his – why is he – what's he doing? What's he bringing new to it? and And I suspect that he may want to step down. I don't want to speak for him. He has not certainly told me that himself. I'm sure he won't like hearing us make that decision for him. And I am not making the decision for him. I am making a prediction.

Speaker: But I think that um I'm going to sell on that one Yeah, I sell too. And I think both you and I know this more than most. Good luck trying to figure out b Brian Schmetzer. Right. And good luck trying to figure out what he's going to do next year or tomorrow. Every time you think you figured out Brian Schmetzer, he, you know, we were just talking about this today. I think Brian revels in being unpredictable. Yeah.

Speaker: Maybe not in his sub patterns all the time, but in the way that his, he carries himself. Correct. Every single time you think he's going to come into a post game and he's just going to blowing up.

Speaker: He, he brings it way down. Yeah. you think he's going to be all excited. He's fired up about some other thing. And, you know, like this game, I would have never guessed that he was going to be, a you know, that he there was going be emotions around someone like Alex Caulfield leaving. And there was genuine emotion there. Like I honestly thought he was going to crack a little bit. Uh, so Brian, uh, we understand that predicting what you do is a foolhardy exercise, but we wouldn't did it anyway. So yeah and in Washington sports, shop I said the exact same thing you said, not as elaborate, of course, but I did add this, that I feel like he's going to wake up.

Speaker: at some point, and I think he's going to be right after the spring season. And just like Danny Glover in Lethal Weapon, I'm too old for this shit. i mean, that's what it is. I'm getting too old for this shit. He's got nothing to prove. He's a a phenomenal coach. He's going to be, if there's ever a a stadium for this team, there's got to be a Brian Smetzer statue out there. And and he's just going to live out into glory. And do i think he'll definitely be back with the organization.

Speaker: All right. All right. I got one buyer sell for you. all right. The Sounders are going to... finish above the plan game? Oh, I sell.

Speaker: I'm, I'm, I'm, I resell. I sell. I'm sorry. i all the optimism has been drained out of me. Uh, and I am a vibes guy and I'm someone that looks beyond the stats and, and beyond the results. And although the performance have been good, there's that X factor. There's that confidence are you're goingnna finish a game that you're going to win it.

Speaker: that I don't see in this team right now. and I think you have two... clubs in the next two games that do have that, that, that have that. I'm going to come to your place and I'm going to just take it over for you. And as much as LAFC is not in great. Not at all. Not at all.

Speaker: On paper, they are and on paper. They're fine on the field. They've been below fine, but I think that they have the star power to make it difficult. And because this team has been unable to prove it, um'm I'm going to sell. I think that they're,

Speaker: They're going to get to the plan. just, you so you think they're going to be making it to the playoffs. They just aren't going get out of the plan. Correct. yeah Exactly. ah Yeah. I, I, I'll, for the sake of this segment, I'm going to say bye. Okay.

Speaker: Just because i want to believe i'm sure I'm going with my, my heart. almost on all, almost on all these things. I think they've got a win in one of these two games. I, I, I don't know which one, but I do think that there's a, that they've got one more win in them. I, I would be shocked.

Speaker: and don't know. Shocked is the wrong word. I don't think bryan a team coach by Brian Schmetzer is going fall at the finish line quite like they would have to fall at the finish line to go. And if they win one of these two games, it feels like they sure that there's a good chance that they they'll get out of the play-in game.

Speaker: But stranger things have happened. That is correct. So that is our By Yourself segment brought to you Marnio Shan, realtor. All right, i like that. All right, so one more segment I wanted to get...

Speaker: We wanted to put on the record because it's an important one. Alex Caulfield today or not today, this week announced that he is leaving the Sounders. He is taking a big job. We'll just say outside of the country. he has not that announcement has not been formally made yet.

Speaker: He we are respecting his wishes to not talk about where he's going. I'll just say it'd be out there. It might be out there soon. ah Brian did ah mention it at the press conference. I don't know if that tape or not made it on, but we, we're not going to talk about where he's going. i will just say that I don't blame him for taking that job.

Speaker: And, I do want to say that a lot of people don't know that much about Alex Colville, although that he did come on, if you're interested, he did come on this podcast ah during the World Cup, and he and I had a nice conversation. I would recommend that you go back and listen to it. He is a real soccer guy. He is probably the biggest soccer. He knows more about soccer than maybe anyone else in his position in in mls He is an ultimate, a consummate pro.

Speaker: I think he has really elevated the level of discourse within the Sounders media sphere. He has done a great job of i of facilitating our job without handing us anything. Contrary to popular belief, the Sounders do not give us any stories other than what they are putting out on press releases.

Speaker: We do not get, they are not leaking new transfers to us. They are not leaking some of these stories. I wish it was like that. I wish it was like that. They would make us easier, but they do not give us all that much information. And Alex certainly wasn't giving us any of that. But he, whenever we asked him, he was always good about getting us answers.

Speaker: He was always good about getting us something we could use on the record. He never misled us as far as I can tell. He was, i think he is the kind of comms director that every and MLS team should be aspiring to bring in. Someone who has, who can have a real conversation with you ah without blowing smoke up your ass.

Speaker: And i i really appreciated working with him. He's been here since late 2014. So he's been here well over a decade. But I also think that it's a little bit of a sad commentary that the Sounders have lost a lot of really good people over the last few years. I think that it's interesting that that coincides mostly with Hugh Webber coming into the organization. He has since left. But I do think that the number is 31-0.

Speaker: people who are a director level or above who have left the organization in just the last three years. Tom Riley, another person who I really respected, who I actually ran into recently.

Speaker: ah that You can just kind of go down the list. And there's a lot of really talented people, people who, Wanted to work for the Sounders more than they wanted to work in professional sports, which I don't think is something that we can take for granted. And that's one of the things I've always felt made the Sounders different is that the whole organization is full of people who wanted to work for the Sounders specifically, that they might not even be in professional sports if it wasn't for ah working for the Sounders.

Speaker: and And Alex is one of those people who really put his heart and soul into this organization. He had grown up in the area. He had he had long aspired to working for the Sounders. He had worked in and for some other semi-pro teams in the area.

Speaker: And losing him is a big loss, but I also think that there's you know there's warning signs about stuff that's going on in the organization and good people being sort of pushed out the door. I co-sign everything you just said.

Speaker: Let me start by adding in regards to Alex Caulfield. I have been doing this, I think since 2012 on and off and then really ah fully and and all the time for about 15, 16 years. And, um Alex Caulfield has been someone that whether I was with ESPN Deportes at the time, whether I was with El Rey, whether I was doing my own thing with Pulso or with Sounder Hard was a support. He was someone that was always out there for my benefit, not never shy of giving me

Speaker: ah counsel and saying, hey, didn know I think this works. they need discuss and He's more than just a PR guy. He's a friend. And that sort of relationship is important between media and and the club yeah because there's a level of respect. and just like Jeremiah said, you don't need to feed me anything in order for me to have enough respect for you for us to say, look, this is what we found out. We're getting stuff out. He was always so objective and he was this great bridge between both sides. And he did his job so great that I think he elevated the level of media from the moment that he took over to what it is now.

Speaker: And it is unfortunate to see him go. And I think you're absolutely right, Jeremiah. Yeah. For at least two years. And it goes back to Hugh, someone who I've referenced in this show, or one of the shows that we did in the studio as a car salesman, ah the monorail guy from The Simpsons that took over the cities and will leave them broke.

Speaker: Because that's kind of what I feel he did. And there was a lot of people that left that we knew that I'm not going to name, but a lot of people who were important that had been here a long time that I thought had really progressive, interesting ideas. But all those ideas were not just shut down, but they were run out of town for a sense. I mean, a year and a half ago, the comms department, let's just use one example, was ah the Sounders comms department was five people.

Speaker: There are now just two. Mm-hmm. I assume Alex will be replaced, but at least two of those people were explicitly not replaced. Yeah. And ah and and i and these are the these things that are front line to communicating with with us, but with also with the fans. And and the the organization is not better off when people like Alex Caulfield feel like they have to leave.

Speaker: that's right Or or they or they're they're leaving for whatever reason. And if if you're wondering why do we care, it's because this is also going up the line in other parts of the organization that, and again, I've been saying this for about a year and a half, no, two years, that I feel like the Sounders have started step away from what made this team great or unique, certain values, certain approach to the fans, approach to things that I feel like now is being seen more as of a business. And I'm not, i'm I'm not naive. I know that soccer is a business to a certain extent, but the Sounders always did it in a way that made the people feel, it made me feel like they were different in a certain way. And and ever since Hugh and, and it's gotten it's got more corporate, exactly. And that is not the Sounders way. So that does worry me, but,

Speaker: I don't want to let any of that overshadow the the real reason of this segment. And it is to thank Alex Caulfield for what he's done for us, for the organization, for me specifically, we wish him nothing but the best. He's getting a dream job.

Speaker: And I'm happy for him and I know he's going to kill it where he's at. And we wish him nothing but the best, but it's been a privilege. It was a privilege to work with him. yeah and And that's all I'll say. Yep. I think that's probably a good ah note to end on.

Speaker: i just want to say... ah remind everyone that we are now going live on Mondays every Monday, Monday sound check with Nico and Adam race. We just recently hired a producer for that show. So I am off the producer.

Speaker: I'm taking that hat off and I will enjoy someone who knows what they're doing, actually running the board. And if you watched this last episode, I think you'll see that it was a much higher level of production than I was capable of putting together. So ah thank you very much for sticking with us. I think it's going to be a much better show going forward and, and hopefully, and if you did stick with us, I want to say thank you. And if you haven't checked it out, that's Mondays at one o'clock Pacific.

Speaker: ah And I think it's going lot of good times ahead for that show. And next week we should be giving Guillermo Gomez-Andrade signed jersey to the winner that jersey. have the name here. believe he reached out you. I've already reached out and I don't know if you'll – yeah, he's already reached out to me. That was a really cool thing that we were able to do there. We also have a Garth interview – Garth Lagoe interview lined up during the – the week between the decision day and the start of the playoffs. So that's something else to look forward to.

Speaker: But with all that said, we should probably get out and get out of here. Thank you to our sponsor, full pool wines. Thank you to all of you who are listening. Want to encourage you to both like, and subscribe us on YouTube. and If you want to leave a comment for us on your favorite podcast platform, that is also always appreciated. But other than that, let's get out of here. I am Jeremiah Oshan. This is Nico Moreno. This is, Nos Adietes, part of the Sounder Heart Podcast Network, as well as the SoccerWise Media Collective.
