Overcoming Creative Blocks in Pottery

Do the opposite of what you would normally do with your pottery. What is up, Shaper Nation? This is Nick Torres here, and on this episode of Shaper Your Pottery, I'm going to be talking about if you are stuck with your pottery right now, try doing the opposite of what you would normally do with your pottery. For the longest time, I had it in my mind that
Misconceptions and Transition from Wheel Throwing

Handbuilding was for the lazy potters. It was for all those lazy people that didn't want to try to learn how to throw on the wheel. I had that in my mind. I just thought because I knew how to throw in the wheel, I thought I was better than everybody else. This is true, by the way. I thought I was better than all the handbuilders out there. And I know for the longest time, I didn't want to go handbuilding. I didn't want to do sculpting at all.

And I remember during my senior year of high school, you know, I'm a high school kid, 17, 18 years old.
Incorporating Handbuilding into Pottery
00:01:43
Speaker
my ceramics teacher at the time he came up to me because I was in ceramics too that year and I was I was allowed to just kind of throw on the wheel kind of just do my own thing he came up to me and he said what if you started trying to incorporate some hand-building elements into your own wheeled-room pottery and you know he spoke in a very soft tone so it was kind of hard to hear him sometimes but
00:02:08
Speaker
He asked me that question and I just kind of brushed it off. I said, yeah, okay, maybe I'll try that. And I didn't try it. I didn't end up trying it.
00:02:20
Speaker
And that one sentence sticks out to me a lot still to this day, because eventually, I was getting kind of bored with what I was making with my

wheelbarrow pottery. You know, I started out with making mugs, and I went on to making large vases, and I was trying to alter those vases, and I went to a raccoon, and I was getting kind of bored of just throwing on the wheel all the time, and just using that to try to communicate my voice. And I was getting bored with it, and I was just kind of going with the motions with it. I was enjoying it, but I was enjoying it to the fullest.
00:02:50
Speaker
It wasn't until I started doing the opposite of what I would normally do. I started hand building and I started sculpting characters and I started doing things I never thought I would do.
Finding Excitement in Pottery Techniques
00:03:02
Speaker
I was doing the complete opposite things of what I would do. And that sentence or that phrase that he asked me was, what if you start incorporating hand built elements
00:03:13
Speaker
and put it into your wheel thrown pottery. That really stuck out to me because once I started sculpting my characters, that's when I realized I've been missing the point the whole time. I'm not better because I throw in the wheel. I'm not better if I hand build in that rather than wheel throw. I'm not better than anything. It doesn't matter. What does matter is if you are doing things that will excite you. And sometimes in order to find that out,
00:03:41
Speaker
as if to do the opposite of what you are currently doing. So right now, if you are currently wheel throwing, instead of wheel throwing, what if you did hand building?
Combining Wheel Throwing and Handbuilding
00:03:50
Speaker
You made hand built mugs, pots, whatever. You start hand building. See where that takes you. See where that direction takes you. If you don't like it, great, you don't have to do it anymore.
00:04:02
Speaker
But what if you end up do liking it? Could you imagine what that can do to your pottery? Because now you have the skills of throwing on the wheel, but now you're also building the skills of hand building as well. And now you can combine the two together. And I think this is so powerful to help you start finding your voice. It's just simply do the opposite of what you would normally do with your pottery.
Experimentation and Finding Your Pottery Voice
00:04:25
Speaker
If you are somebody that likes hand building, why don't you try throwing on the wheel or sculpting or maybe slip casting, whatever it is, and just do the opposite of what you are currently doing right now. You do the opposite so that you can start finding new ways to communicate your voice. And when you're able to communicate your voice better, then your pottery is going to look a lot better. And if you do the opposite, you're going to learn a lot new things about yourself and about your pottery. So go out there.
00:04:55
Speaker
go try doing the opposite of what something you would never have thought to do and go out there and try it. Remember you are just one pot away from finding your own unique pottery voice.
