Starting with the End Goal in Pottery

00:00:37
Speaker
What is up, Shaping Nation? This is Nick Torres here. And on this episode of Shaping Your Pottery, I'm going to be talking about starting with the end in mind and why it's really important to start with the end in mind to help you find your own voice. You see, a while back, I got to interview Taylor Robonaut,
00:00:56
Speaker
And one of the things that Taylor does to that and that she did to help her find her voice and that she encourages other people to do is that she encourages people to make a dream board. And basically, in this dream board, you are starting with the end in mind,

Visualizing Pottery with Dream Boards

00:01:14
Speaker
right? You are starting with what do you want your pottery to look like at the very end, like when it's out of the glaze firing? And what do you want it to look like? Right?
00:01:25
Speaker
And it is very, very important to start with the end in mind. It just gives you a direction. And because the way she was explaining to start with the end in mind, and that gave me a lot of ideas to guys help you guys out. You see, recently, I started making something that I have
00:01:48
Speaker
no idea what to do exactly. All I know is that my end point is what is kind of guiding me right now. You see, right now with my pottery, I want to be able to create my own superhero characters because that's the things that I'm interested in. I'm a huge nerd. I love all things Marvel, Star Wars, Harry Potter, you name it. I'm just a huge freaking nerd.
00:02:14
Speaker
And that's what brings me joy. And I enjoy making the pottery that I'm making right now.

Nick's Superhero Pottery Vision

00:02:20
Speaker
So that's what I am trying to do. But the only problem is, I literally have no idea how I, how to actually make it come to life.
00:02:30
Speaker
But because I have an end goal of what I want, I want my pottery to have its own superhero. I really want to create my own superhero or my own characters for my pottery. That's what I want. That is exactly what I want. And that is my end goal. And now because I have that end goal, everything is becoming so much easier to make that end goal come to life. My end goal is to literally just create
00:02:55
Speaker
superhero characters, and eventually I want to be able to maybe make a comic. I'm not too sure about that yet, but I want to be able to make a comic that goes with those characters that I'm creating. Because I had that end goal, it allowed me to have a clear focus on what I want my pottery to look like. So right now, I am focusing on making sculptures, sculptured characters for my pottery because
00:03:22
Speaker
I'm not that good at painting or using underglazes. I've never used underglazes, but I'm not that good at painting in general. But sculpting I can learn because it's something I have the resources for it and I can just keep on learning. But because I have that end goal in mind, it allows me to try different things.

Finding Your Pottery Interest & End Goal

00:03:42
Speaker
And then if I get off track, I know I'm getting off track because I'm getting further and further away from my end goal. That's why it's important to have an end goal.
00:03:51
Speaker
Now, let me ask you this question. What is your end goal? How do you find an end goal? Well, your end goal is very, very simple. It really comes down to questions. What do I like to make and what or what do I like to see? What are the things that I like just in general? And then to where, how do I want to be able to sell this? Really, those are the only two questions that you really need to help you find an end goal.
00:04:21
Speaker
And if you can answer those two questions, especially the first one, the first one is really important. What do I like to make? What are the things that are fine that I find interesting?

Benefits of Having an End Goal

00:04:33
Speaker
If you could answer that question right there, your end goal is going to show up right there and you're going to be able to find it a lot faster. And once you have an end goal, now you have a plan of action. You have a plan of action, how to make your vision come to life. As long as you have an end goal,
00:04:51
Speaker
Even people that if they don't have a serious end goal like how I do right now, you can still do something simple as drawing out what you want your pottery to look like in that moment for you if you are wheel throwing or hand building, sculpting, whatever. You can draw out what you want your pottery to look like and that is your end goal for that day, for that pot, that singular pot. And it is good because it gives you a clear focus.
00:05:20
Speaker
So I ask you again, what is your end goal and what do you like to make with your
