Juventus new boy Douglas Luiz move from Aston Villa hasn't started in the best way after making the move from the Premier League to the Serie A, with reports suggesting Thiago Motta sees the player as a back up to Teun Koopmeiners.

The Italian Football Podcast patron Anthony sends in a question wondering what Nima Tavallaey and Carlo Garganese think of the troubles the new Juventus signing is having.

Douglas Louise's Role and Performance Issues

00:00:03
Speaker
Welcome Yeah, they're calling it the Casa Douglas Louise at the kind of the Douglas Louise case, um you know, that that is a problem is becoming a big issue, and because, you know, he was there big money, big money signing along with coop miners. This summer, I was seeing a huge, huge deal that saw
00:00:42
Speaker
saw Enzo Bellinicea and Sammy Willink Jr. both go the other way.

High Transfer Fee and Minimal Contribution

00:00:46
Speaker
And how much did they spend in the end? It was like pushing on 50 million, something something along in that in that region for Douglas Louise. And um yeah, he's only had one start.
00:00:57
Speaker
and Not even a minute off the bench against Napoli in the last game He's been Western McKinney of all people has been preferred to him in the last two matches And so yeah, it it seems right now that Thiago Amata doesn't seem to To consider him the right player to play for his his team and the way that he wants to play. and What the reason is, we can only kind of, you know, assume what that could be. I think there's

Impact of Copa America on Louise's Form

00:01:27
Speaker
a few different things. I think are initially, Motta probably didn't want to put him in because he wasn't, he came back late and he had the the Copper America and we've seen a few Copper America players for other teams struggle as well with their fitness and and, you know, being a little bit sluggish in the early start of the season. So maybe he was a little bit hesitant to start him at the beginning.
00:01:46
Speaker
that could be understood. But then after the international break, he still hasn't things haven't improved for him. and and that So that means it can't just be a fitness thing.

Motta's Tactical Preferences vs. Louise's Style

00:01:55
Speaker
um I think that he does take too many touches on the ball sometimes.
00:02:01
Speaker
Douglas Louise and maybe that's something that Motta doesn't like. He likes his players to have as few touches as possible and move the ball quickly and move the opposition around, get them out out of position and then create overloads. And when you've got someone that takes too many touches and holds onto the ball too much, that can make it difficult. So that that's that could possibly be an issue. He obviously thinks that Locate at the moment, and Locate has been playing well, brings more kind of stability equilibrium to the team maybe at the moment and and also i've seen this I've seen this suggested that
00:02:39
Speaker
I mean, Juventus play a 4-2-3-1, let's say, or 4-1-4-1.

Louise's Position as Backup to Koopmeiners

00:02:44
Speaker
I've seen it suggested that Motta sees louis Douglas Luiz as more of an alternative to Koopmeiners, rather than seeing them as two players that can play together. If that's that case rangeed but if that's the case, then that's thats worrying, that's not going to because he's not going to start over Koopmeiners, which means he's a backup for the whole season, if that's the case.
00:03:06
Speaker
That is strange, if if that's the case. um I don't think that. um I think it could be a combination of basically letting him kind of like he's not happy with his fitness levels post Copa Copa America. um and And I think there's going to you know, I think it's too soon to say it's a castle with five, six games in.

Financial Implications of Underutilizing Louise

00:03:28
Speaker
But if we're here in November, and this is the issue, and it's continues like this, then yes, it's a lot of money wasted.
00:03:37
Speaker
um and that it then it actually is a castle. You don't spend that kind of money and then basically use him as little or not tall in the last game as is the case right now and so that is concerning.

Tactical Mismatch Concerns

00:03:52
Speaker
I don't see tactically why he can't play with Koopmans personally. If you're playing three centimetre fielders and you're playing a kind of game that is but but dominating dominating the ball in possession, I don't see why. There has been other suggestions that maybe he's a bit too slow and motor lights players that can compress and win the ball back quickly and maybe he's not.
00:04:16
Speaker
Suitable to that.

Louise's Lack of Goal Threat

00:04:18
Speaker
I don't think Loca telly is the fastest player either though, personally He is maybe better at winning the ball back than than Douglas Louise Maybe he wanted mckennan. He started playing mckennie because he realized he wants more goals to come from his midfield and You know Loca telly doesn't offer goals. Majority doesn't offer goals. Taran doesn't offer goals ah and um You know only what coop miners does And but apart from that, there isn't, you know, the other set of midfielders don't, including Douglas Louise. I mean, I know he had a good goal tally last season, but a lot of them were but penalties. If you look over the course of his career, he's not a goalscoring midfielder, and he's not someone that's got a particularly amazing, like, long shot or anything.
00:05:02
Speaker
gets into loads of goalscoring positions. So maybe he wanted Mckenny because he wanted someone to so offer more goal threat. And that's obviously a problem Juventus are having so much this

Future Role Decided During International Break

00:05:11
Speaker
season. Like I said earlier in the show, Juventus have got the second lowest XG in Serie A this season, which is pretty astonishing, really.
00:05:18
Speaker
ah You know, so so yeah, I don't know. I don't know but so far it is It is a little bit of a concern. I think more than a little bit of a concern right now That he's built a bit that he's below McKinney in the in the in the in the pecking on is very concerning Let's work. Let's park this until the next international break or the November international break especially. And if it hasn't improved, then I think, yeah. Well, that's what I said. I mean, for me, I think it's too soon to call it a caso. I'd say it's a casino. A little caso. But if we're like this, um um if if it's like this in in a month's time, then yes, I think then then we can actually start talking because he was he was very expensive.
