Introduction to Connecting with Potters
00:00:00
Speaker
Here are five places that will make it easier to connect with other potters. What is up, Shaped Nation? This is Nick Torres here. And for those that don't know me, it is my mission to help potters like yourself to have your own unique voice with your pottery. So in this episode, I'm going to talk about five places that anyone can do to meet more potters and connect with more potters.
Finding Connections in Markets
00:00:21
Speaker
So number one is market. I personally haven't ever done a market, but I know a ton of potters who have had lots of success doing market and they've met a lot of other potters and artists as well doing market.
00:00:34
Speaker
This one is very, very simple because you could simply just do a farmer's market on a weekend and you could probably meet a couple of different potters there. And there are also markets where it's more specifically centered toward clay and ceramic pieces. And that's where you're going to meet tons more ceramic artists. So that's number one is markets.
Pottery Events for Networking
00:00:57
Speaker
Number two is event. There are lots of pottery events throughout the year, you know, and Sika there's Clay Con West and there's a bunch of other ones as well that I just don't know the names of. But there's a lot of clay event and these events not only will give you some tip and you get to see new tools and you get to see other things.
00:01:20
Speaker
You also get to meet other potters because it's an event for potters is for pottery. And so by attending these events, it's very easy to make connections with people. You know, you you maybe you're seeing somebody in this event.
00:01:35
Speaker
And you like what they make. So you go up to them and say, hey, I like what you're making. Where can I follow you more? And that sparks the conversation, that sparks the relationship. So go to events if you are able to. So the two so far are number one is market, farmers market, art festivals, all those things. Number two is events. Any type of event that is involving clay or even art itself.
Workshops: The Ultimate Networking
00:02:05
Speaker
So number three are workshops. Workshops are probably the best way that you can actually
00:02:13
Speaker
meet and communicate with new other fellow potters. The reason is is because you're going for a workshop for a specific thing in mind. You know, maybe you go for a workshop on how to throw large pots or maybe you're going to a workshop on how to how to make graffiti or maybe it's raccoon workshop. And these are very intimate settings because everybody's making pottery already right there. So it's very easy to start a conversation. It's easier because you say, oh, that piece looks really, really cool. How did you make that?
00:02:43
Speaker
It's very easier. It's a lot easier to build relationships and connect with other potters through workshop because the whole idea of workshop is to gather a bunch of potters and teach them new skills. So that is a very easy way to do it. Not only that, you're also learning something as well. So attend in-person workshops, attend online workshops. Workshops are probably your best way to go because you're killing two birds with one stuff.
00:03:09
Speaker
Number three or number four here or I should say that to recap the three so far. So number one are markets. Number two are events. Number three are workshops.
Pottery Communities Online and Offline
00:03:20
Speaker
And number four is communities. There are a bunch of communities where you can connect with other parts of Facebook groups. There's in-person communities where you know you can rent out space in
00:03:31
Speaker
and make pottery there you could do other online communities about pottery. There's tons of communities out there and you can join them probably for a really low cost or a high cost but that's a really good way to connect with other potters as well because
00:03:49
Speaker
Again, everybody's there for the pottery. They make pottery, they learn more about pottery because we all love pottery. So we want to join those communities. So the four so far here are number one, our markets. Number two, our events. Number three, our workshops. Number four is joining community.
Leveraging Social Media for Connections
00:04:08
Speaker
And riding the last way that you can connect with other potters is simply use social media. I know some of us don't like social media that much, but it's the age that we live in. So if you can get good at using social media to connect with other potters,
00:04:22
Speaker
They need to go a lot further because you already know what it is that people are doing. And if you connect with other partners on social media, it's going to be, you don't have to spend money, you don't have to go out and take a workshop, you don't have to travel, you don't have to go on a plane, whatever. Social media is free and you have access to people's programs.
00:04:43
Speaker
every part around the world, you can build a relationship pretty easily, simply by calling me, commenting on their their post, following them, DMing them, saying and asking them questions. It's destined. So here
Recap of Connection Methods
00:04:56
Speaker
are the five. So that here are the five places where you can connect with other parties again. So number one is markets. Number two is events. Number three is workshops. Probably your best bet is workshops because everybody is making powder in some form.
00:05:13
Speaker
Number four is community and number five is social media. Hope you guys enjoyed this episode and I'll see you guys in the next one.
