Introduction to Hosts and Topic

00:00:30
Speaker
How's it going, everyone? Welcome to another episode of Soapstone. My name is Jake. I'm joined by my co-host, as always, Dave. How's it going tonight, Jake? It's going good. Oh, that's awkward. So podcast today is about a game called Slap City.
00:00:49
Speaker
I have, like, this vision of you, like, treading water. It's like, oh gosh. Yeah. We should, we should really record these indoors, you know, the, the life boat. But hey, speaking of outdoors, that weather real quick, real quick aside. It's pretty nice. Fucking gorgeous. It was pristine weather. We're basically recording this and the only medium guaranteed that it'll be useless information to whoever consumes it. We're audio listeners. Please imagine like a very balmy outside.
00:01:17
Speaker
Yeah, I actually I walked over here so I bring like my backpack with a laptop and some some Hardware and stuff brought the switch this time. Yeah But I just wore a t-shirt for like the first time. Yeah, like I always wear a jacket or something and It's really nice Like I brought the jackets like go out and meet somebody for lunch. Mm-hmm But as soon as I stepped outside, I'm like, I'm gonna keep this jacket on for a style, but I could do without it
00:01:47
Speaker
You just discard it. Just leave it. I mean, I was just in a t-shirt. I didn't want to. Because also, like, I was gonna eat food. And I was gonna look bloated in a t-shirt. I was like, I thought the look we want. Wear a fucking jacket. But yeah, it is nice. Yeah, it was a very nice day outside today. Wish I would have spent more time outside is what I would have said if I was the kind of person who spends time outside.
00:02:07
Speaker
I I kind of want to just like set up a lawn chair and Like I have books. I don't read the books, but like I have books like maybe I could reread Scott Pilgrim or something. Oh, yeah, like 20 minutes would have been great. Do you have the didn't though the manga? Yeah hardcover and I bought each one individually from What's the fucking bookstore? I don't know. I don't go places. I
00:02:38
Speaker
It's one of the major bookstores. Acme Road. You're moving, Dave. I have to live here. Barnes and Noble. Holy shit. Yeah. But like I went there, I get one. I worked through it or like however long. And then I go back and buy the next one. Yeah. I deal with things for a while. Do they have all of the Scott Pilgrim series of things?
00:03:01
Speaker
They might still. You could borrow mine too. I've read it, but I read it in digital format too. I downloaded all of them. I was like, this is really good. It's really good. Like I was saying, this episode's about Scott Pilgrim.
00:03:20
Speaker
No lie. I would do that and wing it right now. Um, it's been a long time for me though. I don't remember all of the, the plot twists and the drama. I'll go over it. But tonight we're talking about slap city. Um, which for those of you who follow donkey, he's featured it in one or two of

Slap City: Gameplay Mechanics

00:03:39
Speaker
his videos. And as Jake calls it, it is they, the budget version of the budget version of smash.
00:03:47
Speaker
Yeah, I also like that as soon as you named the title as soon as you title drop there was actual thunder that broke out I've heard some weird fucking sounds over the years my dude. I think it was actual thunder though I think it was literally supposed to get rain hmm interesting
00:04:05
Speaker
But yeah, Slap City is a 2D brawler, basically, but not like in a street fighter way, much more like Smash. Pretty much everything about it is inspired by Smash. Yes, it is very Smash-esque. They have a pretty, I don't know if the word's addictive, but noticeable theme song, which you guys may or may not have heard at this point. Yeah, it's kind of like an English Vocaloid.
00:04:33
Speaker
Yeah, that's probably a good way to put it. Yeah. It's annoying, but also it grew on me a little bit. Right. It's so good. You motherfucker. They only have eight characters out currently as it's still under development. Um, I think they initially started out with like six and they had like two DLC characters since as a guest, the numbers could be off. Right. Um, but I know Jake is a major hard on as I visibly see it through the internet.
00:05:03
Speaker
For one of the DLC characters, which is leaves goddess of explosions. Yeah, that sounds right That's that's pretty good description and she has I think one of the Best kits it's like some of the other ones were like I understand what the design was Yeah, it's kind of weird, but then her stuff Mike
00:05:21
Speaker
Oh, this is all just synergizing with like blowing shit up. That's cool. Yeah. And she, she feels like, so like, well, we'll, we'll, I guess, get into the quality of some of these characters. Hers is one of the ones I know. Right. Hers is one where it seems like she's an actual fighter character, which I nice, like, which I think is nice. Um, which I nice. Uh, she has a kit where like a lot of her abilities work well together. Like, um.
00:05:48
Speaker
And control-wise, it's very, very similar to Smash. You've got like shields, grabs, dodges, all of that. But the thing for her is a lot of her abilities, like you said, are related to explosions, as you would think with goddess of explosions, right?
00:06:05
Speaker
So like you might open up by like creating a fireball in front of you, and it's really slow But if you hit it with an attack it inherits the direction of the attack and the momentum So you can like propel it forward or launch it up and like set up some pretty crazy combos with it And she has like
00:06:25
Speaker
One of her special moves is she'll like dash across the screen really quick almost like the peach butt slide in Super Smash Bros Where she just launches with a second like yeah, but the peach butt slide is like a
00:06:39
Speaker
It's like a hip thrust. It's very quick and abrupt. Yes. Whereas the ability you're talking about, you can kind of slide across the whole stage. So it's like somebody like literally lassoed you and they're just pulling you fucking across the whole screen and you can let go and you just go into like this full punch.
00:06:55
Speaker
Yep. Full explosive punch. Which explodes. Everything explodes for her. Um, and she's got like her, her neutral special is like a, uh, kind of an explosion, a little bit above her and the direction she's facing. So you can use it for some like aerial denial. That's the thing. Like I'd come in for a lot of attacks and I like, as long as you could already done like the snap, I'm like, God damn it. And then I would just interrupt my combo is doing on you.
00:07:21
Speaker
Yeah, and the snap I actually really enjoy and it's it's kind of unique like in a game like this obviously They're gonna inherit. There's been a lot of fighting games. Right? How do you do anything original? I like the snap. It's not a counter like smash would have but it You hear the snap and then a few seconds later, like I think it's two and a half three seconds. What? It's pretty quick. It's like a fucking half second. It's it's nowhere. It's got to be longer than a half second. I
00:07:48
Speaker
Maybe a second. Jake, I've been hit by that. But anyways, after a fixed delay, um, there's a blue explosion of like fire where you were so you can snap move. And then that will explode. I would use that a lot of times. If Dave was playing a character who wanted like clothes on me, which is every fucking character range is not as much of an option for the, this little roster. Yeah. Um, and then he'd get hit by that popped up in the air and I could hit him with like,
00:08:18
Speaker
Hey, it's not an up smash but like an up neutral attack Kind of like bounce them up there and stuff But yeah, she's by far my favorite character You've played probably more time on other characters because I think she was one of the first ones I tried and I just didn't really very varied up as much and
00:08:42
Speaker
Yeah, I'm like a priest. I've touched everybody at least once. But I think my current favorite, it initially was the fish bunjin. Yeah. Probably saying that name wrong, but it's like the really muscular fish chicken guy. Yeah. I think Dunkey spent a lot of time on him.
00:09:00
Speaker
Yeah, and he does like a lot of silly shit and apparently some of his kit can be Or cannot be interrupted right so you can go in an animation. Someone's like I'm gonna hit you you're like gotcha Yeah But now my current main in quotes is It'll do or little do yeah, which is probably most akin to Ness. Mm-hmm
00:09:25
Speaker
Which is solely because the the B recovery and the forward aerial. He's got the like villager Ness like vibe going on for sure.
00:09:36
Speaker
Yeah. So I just try and like get in there, get some quick combos. It's mainly for a lot of the speed and some of the maneuverability. Um, a lot of the specials as far as like throwing out a bomb or shooting a thing across the deals, three damage and no impact. It's not the best part of the kit. Yes. So I just try to like run up and get in your face.
00:10:00
Speaker
because like you at range is not helpful because of that fireball projectile. Yeah. It's just way better than a lot of other projectiles. But I get to be sneaky beaky and occasionally get off like a cool heavy hit or a smash.
00:10:14
Speaker
Yeah. Yeah. I think I really like the combos you can pull off with her. And that's, that's the issue I have with a lot of characters in this is it feels like they have some really good attacks and then other attacks where you're like, why would I ever use this? Yeah. Like it's just not good by comparison. It comes out slow, has low hit frames or something like that.
00:10:33
Speaker
I know I was bitching about this earlier, but my biggest complaint is, I feel like each character in the air, I mean, you have like your different directional stuff like you would for Smash, but there's a difference between light attacks and heavy attacks. And if you do a heavy attack in the air,
00:10:50
Speaker
It doesn't have a directional option. It's just whatever it is. Yes for some characters It's like I'll shoot a laser to the side. Yes. Yeah, and it's like that's all it is and for it'll do it's Taking essentially like a giant board or like a door and smashing it under you But I suck at the timing of that. Yeah, so I'm like I'm gonna hit Jake below me down a it's like going the animation like I did the wrong button
00:11:17
Speaker
It is also like really punishable. Like you're locked into that animation. So I'm like, I'll position myself like over here and I will expect that you land right here. It's it's something you can kind of read.
00:11:31
Speaker
And when you take impacts, um, it feels like there's a much greater delay or lag before you can interact again. So maybe Jake will hit me at him at like 75%. I'll go towards the blast zone. I'm just like, please God, let me do anything. But sometimes it's just up to the will of the fates.
00:11:52
Speaker
It's really weird the blast zone is like really weird in this because it uses the same percentages as like super smash bros does as far as You get the percentage up and you'll like hit them further, right? But um, it seems like there's a threshold where it's like it doesn't hit you that far It doesn't hit you that far. It doesn't hit you that far now. It's a hundred percent lethal Like so if you hit somebody with a strong attack, they'll go to the blast zone It'll actually take like a second
00:12:18
Speaker
so you'll think that you're not dead and

Gaming Preferences and Habits

00:12:20
Speaker
then it registers the death it's not that instant kind of response like in smash um which threw me off a lot because i'm like still in this and it's like you lose i'm like oh i i guess not
00:12:36
Speaker
Which doesn't happen a lot. Um, cause Jake and I probably played like one or two hours of this. We're just be like, all right, I'm gonna try it. Like first we did the whole, we'll try out the characters, see what the game's like. Cause this is like 10 bucks or not even. It was, I felt like it might've been, was it 10? I felt like it was 20, but I could be wrong.
00:12:55
Speaker
I feel like I'm going to pay 20 for that game. I feel bad. Well, Jake looks that up. We were trying out some characters initially and seeing like how fun or janky the game was. And then later is like, okay, I feel a little more experienced and like certain character. Jake, let's fight. Like we do a couple of rounds, but typically I feel like you've bested me at a lot of these.
00:13:21
Speaker
I don't have internet connectivity. I can't check the number. They're somewhere between zero and twenty dollars. Technically true. I did, but then I also played characters that I felt that felt good to play and they felt like safe. I feel like three or four of the characters I could just straight ignore because I just dislike their kit. They're not that fun. It doesn't feel like it has energy.
00:13:48
Speaker
Seems shit. Like there's one that's like, uh, I forget her name, but she, she's like a little nurse and the heels and she's super cute. Yeah. But like her attacks don't hit her. They don't seem to do a lot of damage. There's no hit signs, but there was no hit son to it. Yeah. Like she has some projectile stuff, but it's like, eh,
00:14:07
Speaker
You could just run right through the projectiles and hit her for a while. It's not like a projectile and you're shitting out damage. Like they can and they're working like build up in other games. So maybe if I played more, I'd be like, okay, this is what the kid is. This is how you work with the character. Yeah. But it just felt like, oh, if you're doing like a multiple person game, I can assist and do some range shit and maybe heal a teammate. Cause you're taught heals, right? Was that what it was that healed?
00:14:34
Speaker
I don't know. I know there's like a taunt where I have like a bouquet of flowers and it's like oh I just won the prize and then you can toss it back and that can hit somebody Oh, but I swear there's also an attack I did that just it fucking healed you I'm not playing this character. I remember being healed at some point in the fight and I was like, yeah, it's all I get that far ahead No, take the handicap. I got you
00:14:57
Speaker
Yeah, there's a The the other character I did enjoy those like it's kind of it was like a ninja guy. Oh
00:15:04
Speaker
Remember how I said Jake's an edgelord? Yes. I'm sorry, Jake, continue. This is good proof of that, but he's got a full-on katana and some pretty solid moves. A lot of them weren't nearly as useful as just... Up tilting. Up tilts, yeah. Just up tilt for days. It's a tilt, like you can call it a tilt, but there's no smash attack, so it's an up attack.
00:15:31
Speaker
Um, but his coverage is insane. The move comes out like almost instantly and it covers like almost in front of him, definitely above him and fully behind him. Yeah. Yeah. It's like a crazy good arc. And if I'm being juggled, I have a really hard time getting down because I just get hit by one of these and you can do air dodges, but.
00:15:58
Speaker
You can't you can't a little fuzzier. Yeah, you'd like you like you were saying you can't like go right into it In your maneuverability in the air is more limited. Yeah, I can't be like Diving in a headfirst. Mm-hmm as I just shown in the mic I can't be diving in a head first like dodge through it and reach the ground before you know thing It's it's odd
00:16:18
Speaker
Cause like I actually, I was using this guy against Dave and I was like, he seems pretty good. And also Dave sucks at this game. And then Dave is the guy against me. I was like, it's weird how I can't hit the ground. Jake is my mentor.
00:16:33
Speaker
It's uh, it was really obnoxious and honestly just not having that guy in our games Made it more fun too. Yeah, because like I don't know who balances this game, but it's like It's not balanced doesn't feel balanced Maybe there's some pro meta that i'm unaware of and like there's a name for bandage girl or whatever name is Pretty sure it's actually bandage girl. I think that's from super meat boy That might be the connective piece, but it could be you know
00:17:05
Speaker
Do you have internet in your apartment? No Thank you for uploading as I cannot ever yeah, but Yeah, some of those characters just don't feel fun to play And the ones that do feel fun are Fun enough that I don't know why you wouldn't Like I don't know why you would go back to the others as the issue
00:17:29
Speaker
I like how unique they are though. Yeah. Because like one of the sins of Super Smash Brothers Ultimate to obviously make the comparison. Right. They have a lot of the same fucking character. True. Fire Emblem, calm your fucking tits. There's so many that play very similarly. Right.
00:17:49
Speaker
And like, granted, they're all unique. They're all had like distinct designs and yada yada. But it's like, okay, cool. You did this same fucking thing. You have three, 10 different links. Great. But in this, there's no character. I'm like, Oh, this shows a similar similarity with that one. Right. Cause just roll through the roster. We mentioned goddess of explosions. Yes. Little do the Katana guy whose name I can't remember. Doesn't really matter.
00:18:18
Speaker
Super muscular fish guy. Yeah. Who's very, has very heavy attacks and much more delay.
00:18:26
Speaker
There's a little polygon that I guess would be the closest considered to Meta Knight slash Zorro. Yeah. And his kit's interesting, but he's still kind of fun. It's really weird though. You have Jenny, the Fox who has a skateboard is a Tanuki or is in a fursuit and throws axes. Right. A lot of which can hit pretty hard. Um, we'll do.
00:18:55
Speaker
Mr. Businessman? Oh yeah. Your casual businessman? I still don't understand how that character works. He's a hot dog in suspenders. Yeah.
00:19:04
Speaker
And a lot of his stuff, like he transforms. So your be recovery is, um, you turn into like a bow and then like your body is the arrow and you kind of like shoot where you go. Yeah. And some other stuff. It's very much a cartoon, right? It's very cartoony. Yeah. But like he plays a lot differently than the others. I know I'm missing one.
00:19:28
Speaker
Yeah, there's probably another I didn't spend much time off of a ninja guy and goddess of explosions because They were real fun to be honest. They were real fun I think I gave everybody a try but some of their controls just feel really weird and the hitboxes feel really weird so I stuck with the ones that were not nearly as Obnoxious to play for me at least
00:19:57
Speaker
The game has like your standard array of multiplayer options. We only really did two-player versus, but there's a whole like online search for match thing. I believe there's a bunch of modes. You got time, stock, like basically what you would expect from Super Smash Bros.
00:20:16
Speaker
But and also like these Between match you can send messages Like pre yeah, almost like a I was gonna say RuneScape, but not RuneScape Hearthstone Yeah, like like Hearthstone emotes basically or it's like good game or last one. I promise And like a bunch of other things some of them are pretty funny. Yeah, it's Very community driven. So a lot of things are kind of Mimi based. Yeah
00:20:43
Speaker
And in the same regard, a lot of the characters will have alt skins or even some of the characters like gods explosions guarantee those fucking like community design. Yeah. They also have like different names. Sometimes if you change those skins, which mash also also does with, um, the, uh, the, uh, Bowser Jr. Right. But, um,
00:21:05
Speaker
So we just didn't mention the medic girl when I was doing the full roster lineup, but that is all of them. Yeah. It's actually going to be eight, maybe seven. I didn't count. In either case. It's like, I was going to say, yeah, like smash duplicates a lot in the form of the fire emblem characters.

Impact of Game Updates on Meta

00:21:21
Speaker
But on the other hand, when you only have seven characters, like if you've already, if you're already creatively bankrupt at seven characters, like good luck. Right. So, um, but like in the same regard, I'm really curious to see.
00:21:35
Speaker
In anything, I like when new stuff comes out for a pre-existing meta. Right. So like when Mars came out for Dota 2, segue. I like to see how those abilities are going to interact with the current meta. And typically for any type of like pubs games, regardless of game, the new character will be like shitting on people. Maybe it's Baptiste for Overwatch. Even for like games I'm not playing. Baptist, yeah. Baptist? I just call him Baptist. Well, it's his meme name because it's literally only an E away from Baptist.
00:22:06
Speaker
That's that's the only the only thing so like all the pro players are calling them Baptist Continue thank you for correcting my presentation
00:22:16
Speaker
Like when new stuff comes out in like Hearthstone back when you guys played that more Yeah, I liked hearing about it like what is this new thing right so in that same realm? When piranha plant came out for Smash Bros. I'm like how the fuck? To see what they do with it and in the same vein like this is a game that I'll probably follow up for if They keep coming out with new characters. Yeah
00:22:39
Speaker
because i'm like what even fits into this space yeah i don't know because i've not spent the time to think about it it is it is like interesting because it's like as far as casual games are concerned like i mean there's fighting games which are like your top tier if people actually play fighting games you cannot play against them it is a very exclusive club right
00:23:00
Speaker
Yeah, and then and then there's like super smash bros, which is like unless it's a one-on-one You don't know how you don't have to know how to play the game to have a good time with it It's one of the reasons I like picked it up was because like I played it at LAN I got absolutely destroyed by everyone else in these group fights and
00:23:17
Speaker
And I was like that was amazing. I'm gonna buy this and the console it came on they wrote it not But This is like even lower than that, right? Like I put this as like a couch co-op game or even if you were playing against somebody like One of us who's put like a couple hours into it. Maybe we would be better. We would know how the moves are but yes, definitely like it's even it's less complicated than Super Smash Bros and
00:23:43
Speaker
Yeah. It's fun to have like the occasional, hey, some friends over, let's dick around and something like a gang B setting as a perfect example, where a lot of it just button mashing and screaming at the TV. Yeah. But it's really fucking fun because shit happens. Yeah.
00:24:01
Speaker
Like I remember who's fucking video, Oni had a let's play of Gangbeast and it was him and some friends. And it was just like, it's the interactions that come out with it between the people. And the game is just a medium for that. Right. They're the personalities for it. I think Dunkey also had a Gangbeast video at one point. Probably.
00:24:24
Speaker
Let's promote all our favor. You do. Yeah. But I think my biggest thing about slap city is like, we can spin it up pretty quick. Just get in a game and dick around. Yeah. It also works online and you don't have to buy a switch for it. Yeah. So like, I mean, technically smash also works online, but you'd have to have the Nintendo subscription.
00:24:51
Speaker
which I still think is like $15 a year. The only reason I don't have it is because I only play Smash locally. But you don't even have that barrier of entry. You have a PC, you could play this. If you have a controller, good. That's probably gonna help a little bit. I think we both played with controllers.
00:25:07
Speaker
Yeah. Like I think I initially got a controller for Dark Souls because you had to keyboard a mouse. Oh yeah. Um, in the same way, like it's good for near automata. That's a good game. Um, but any type of 3d fighter like this, I feel it's really good for. Yeah. I can't imagine doing any fighter outside of control or honestly.
00:25:29
Speaker
It's pretty weird. It's pretty weird because they've all come out with a control scheme like originally. I like when you're watching like a tournament or something for like an actual kind of like OG 2D fighter or something like Street Fighter or Tekken or something. They have like the fucking and they have like the joystick and like the three buttons and they come in with that and I'm like, all right, this is serious, serious business.
00:25:56
Speaker
For a while though, I did on PC play Street Fighter Alpha. Okay.
00:26:01
Speaker
Cause it had a CD, but I remember doing like the, you know, like the roll forward down to facing for like hadouken, for example, I got really good at doing that for like the arrow keys. So I do all of my combos that way. Right. But then my other buttons were like somewhere over in like the cordy space. That's where it got really fucking weird. Yeah.
00:26:28
Speaker
You know, like a lot of people don't use WASD. They actually offset it to an E, S, D, F. I'm going to look at the keyboard here. They move it all just one to the right. Why? Because it gives you more hotkeys for the MMO space or something like that. Because you now have more options on the left side of your keyboard. Wow. This is a fact that doesn't tie to anything we were talking about. But you mentioned arrow keys. I don't know.
00:27:00
Speaker
I don't think I've ever used a macro, honestly. Yeah. To be fair, I've played two or three MMOs total in my life and not enough four. I forgot, uh, it's always played.
00:27:14
Speaker
uh secret world yeah i forgot about that but like i never played any of them they didn't have the longevity for me to be like i'm invested to this point right it's like i'm gonna press the two buttons i know yeah it's it's tough to kind of like go back to that now there's been several times i've considered rejoining final fantasy 14
00:27:36
Speaker
But the, the issue is, well, I mean, I've already talked about it. The issue is like you're committed when you're playing an MMO. And if you've got that subscription up, you feel like, or in my case, I feel like I could play a different game, but I'm literally paying money to pay them to play this one. Right. So, but that fights against my natural inclination, which is to play a game for a period of time and then stop.
00:28:00
Speaker
Which everyone has run up against me and like some things I'll get really excited about something and then stop The running joke amongst our group of friends is Jake will always get people into games Because he's so if you'd like listen to my voice see how laissez-faire I am but then hear Jake when he's passionate about something he's talking about it and you're like
00:28:23
Speaker
I don't know what that is, but that sounds really cool. And then people get into like a game and they're like, we'll play for a week. And then Jake, Jake has found something new. He's found some new new love. Yeah. And then people are like, I thought we were playing this thing over here and he's done that.
00:28:38
Speaker
I feel not as much recently, but it happened for like two years straight. Yeah. Or people were like, it became a meme at the point. Yeah. We also like, we haven't really played a lot of new games as a group. I think as a whole, people are kind of settled into their, their sort of gaming circles. And we've got a couple of major titles that we could play. Yeah. Like I'll play Overwatch when I'm drunk. If I'm feeling social.
00:29:02
Speaker
Right. So it's typically Lambertis. Yeah. Destiny 2 I've done a little more of recently. A lot more than I have, actually. Yeah. That's true. Yeah.
00:29:15
Speaker
Currently trying to grind out a gun, because that's what that game is. Yeah, I was going to say, I'm pretty sure that sentence could be the entirety of Destiny 2. Try to find out, insert item. Right. There's two things in that game. There's armor and there's guns. And cosmetics.
00:29:33
Speaker
Like the game is enjoyable enough, honestly, and they do add stuff to it, but I still have the gripe of it's very grindy. Yeah. And a lot of the stuff is very linear in the sense of.
00:29:46
Speaker
I have this gun. What does your gun do? It has numbers for how much damage it does. Okay. Yeah. And then maybe like three other stats beyond that, but it's. That's kind of, that's kind of the formula for a looter shooter though. Like, like how much can you really do in that space? That's, that's different from that. Right. Like borderlands had a bunch of really weird guns, but you couldn't like put those in a game where someone can take that gun and shoot their friends with it. Right. That would be chaos.
00:30:16
Speaker
Like the gun that screams every time you fire it. Like, why would you even release that? Like no one will use this except to troll their friends. Yeah. So yeah, it's been like a while, I think, since we all were aboard a new game train. I mean, I literally will be in that train for a satisfactory next week, but that is my life.
00:30:40
Speaker
All right, I'll give you a brief outlet, but obviously I can't speak as much towards any type of efficiency factory game, because as we've described with Minecraft, I'm the guy who goes out and collects things and uses his bare hands. And I don't want to find a more efficient way to do it. I don't want to make potions. I've literally not done that the entirety of Minecraft, sadly. That's disappointing, because potions are good. I'm the stubborn idiot, essentially.
00:31:07
Speaker
I don't know about stubborn idiot, but you're the, you're the adventurer. You want to go in the game and get the adventure. The idea of like maxing out the civil structure tech tree does not like enthrall you as much as it does me where I'm like, how come I can't charge my friends for potions? You know, right? Like I want to build an economy or something. Yeah. Um, so first off, um, explain for the audio listeners, which is fucking all of them. What is factorial?
00:31:34
Speaker
Factorio is a different game than what I was talking about, but I have been playing it recently. I'm saying it's going to be the baseline. Yes. Yeah. Yeah. This is part of the baseline. So Factorio is top-down tile-based logistic simulator, basically. You've crash-landed. You gather resources. You automate that process. You build new things.
00:31:56
Speaker
you eventually launch a spaceship, which I have never actually gotten to that point because I always stopped the game before then, and then you just continue to improve your process. That's the gist.
00:32:08
Speaker
Sorry, I want to like insert like a little tantric joke. Uh-huh. I get very close to launching the spaceship, but I never launched the spaceship. Never launched the spaceship. When I do, it's gonna be awesome, though. Spaceship starts to take off, you're like, no, no, back that down, back that down. But Satisfactory is clearly taking a lot of inspiration from that. It's a 3D game, so instead of just running around on
00:32:32
Speaker
a kind of like top-down grid. You have the full first-person experience. It looks like it has a lot of really cool animations and stuff. So we have a friend that streams Daniel, of course. He obviously has played some time with this. They had like a free weekend, which is pretty legit. And I bought it like immediately, actually, when I saw it. And then I learned that it wasn't coming out until the 19th. And I was like, I'm still okay with this.
00:33:02
Speaker
19th of this month, right? Yes 19th of this month. So if you guys are hearing this on a Sunday There's a chance that it will be playable on a Tuesday Unless you're in the future Which case is out? Yeah, just assume by the time you've got around to listening this hour Probably unless you're very dedicated listener and you're listening before Tuesday
00:33:24
Speaker
If you are, please direct message me and tell me I'm wrong. But I don't think anybody listens to this Sunday. We could make it easier if I uploaded

Podcast Editing and Posting Process

00:33:34
Speaker
like before the night on Sunday, right? You're like, Sunday, 11.50, I'm like, Jake, Jake, you gotta do this shit. It's the button.
00:33:43
Speaker
I've just been waiting here and post. I actually just edit it all way ahead of time. But then when Dave reminds me, I wait three hours when I post it. But it looks really cool. It's got like a progression, like a hub you build, and you gather resources, build your machines, your conveyor belts, very similar to Factorio, bring it all together, and then gather resources to continue to upgrade your hub, which unlocks new technology and stuff like that.
00:34:12
Speaker
And it's really cool. Is like the collection part kind of like Minecraft in a way, or is it more like it's of Nautica? It's more, I mean, it's on the surface. And as far as I saw, and I haven't spent a lot of time like looking into the game because I'll experience some of it for myself.
00:34:29
Speaker
It seems like it's kind of go out, do some surveying, find a note of iron, build an extractor, build the belt back to your base, ride it through some factories, take the output, put it in storage or something. But less strict exploration, I would think, than something like Subnautica.
00:34:50
Speaker
So you have like a resource node, as you said. Yeah. So is that just, you'll keep collecting from it or does it empty out? I believe it. I believe there's a quantity. I think I remember seeing there's only so much resources available, which is also like factorial. That's one of the ways that they force you to go out and like find more resources. Cause in factorial, you start out and you're guaranteed to be near stone, iron, copper and coal.
00:35:16
Speaker
And you're like, all right, I'm good. And you can kind of like tech up for a bit. And then you like mouse over those deposit and it's like, you have 10,000 coal left. And you're like, but that powers every time to go make a train or something like that. Get more coal. Right. Um, is there also going to be some type of imperative or is it creative?
00:35:37
Speaker
Uh, I'm not sure if there's an overarching, what is the impetus for your creation, Jacob? I mean, you don't actually need one. That's one of the tricks with these games is like, like I was saying, for factorial, the impetus is create the spaceship and then you've completed the campaign. I've never done that. And I have still put almost 500 hours into the game over the course of many different save files and multiplayer experiences and stuff like that. Um.
00:36:04
Speaker
Yeah, it's like there, there, there could be a goal. They're very well is similar to like subnautica where it's like, Hey, try to escape, try not to die, you know, but this seems the last try not to die. Um, and more focused on the, the logistic side of it, which I really enjoy.
00:36:24
Speaker
So, that's my little aside for Satisfactory. People are probably wondering, how do I tie this back to Slap City? Well.
00:36:34
Speaker
A city needs infrastructure to run. In fact, Torrio, you build infrastructure, satisfactory build infrastructure. There you go. Back to slap city. And Jay talking about this makes me want to slap him. So it fits. Yeah. Um, so what is, what is your side that ties back to the slap city to continue entertaining our listeners, but also buying time. Another game. Uh-huh.
00:36:58
Speaker
That recently had an update as I know we've mentioned is Hades. Okay. Yeah for installment from supergiant. Yeah, yeah the rogue like Isometric fighter thing. Yeah, I've grown to love more and more has released yet another patch Where they've added like some new bosses and stuff
00:37:17
Speaker
Nice. And this is like the murder death kill update. Yeah. So they added, um, I'm sure, you know, like the first boss very one is Megara. The Meg. Meg. Yeah. The Meg. The Meg. Megnog. We're fighting robot. Meg. And, uh, so now her sisters have been brought in and they each have different play styles. I don't even think you face Meg anymore. I feel like you face either one of her sisters.
00:37:46
Speaker
Uh, and they are much fucking harder. I was like, it's okay. I've played this game before. Let me show you. And then I got, I lost a good portion of my health and one of my lives. I'm like, Oh, okay. Do you face them at the same location? Like it's the first area it's in place. It's just the end of that first area. Hmm. Interesting.
00:38:09
Speaker
But they're cool and new and they've added some new boons, which are blessings you can get from gods, which are like passive bonuses, whether it's increased damage for your attack, some modifier for your special, et cetera.
00:38:24
Speaker
Our listeners are very dedicated. They know what the boons are. But now they also have a thing you can get where it's like a meter. Okay. So if you take damage or deal damage, it will build up this meter. And then at the end of which, depending on which God gave it to you, you'll have some ultimate ability, which will last for, I think on hours, like five seconds, but it'll kind of burn down the meter. It's like a transform or?
00:38:53
Speaker
Depends. So like the one I got from Poseidon was you are impervious which means you can't take damage or be impacted by Projectiles or anything? Yeah, and I can just like kind of skate around the screen on water and damage enemies knock them back That's pretty cool with Zeus. It was Thunderbolts are being called out from the sky. It's too many of my enemies with Dionysus it was I would have these clouds of
00:39:19
Speaker
Poison gas glad around me. Okay, so keep putting dots on enemies who are nearby. Okay? Do you keep the meter like can you choose when you want to spend it if you've charged that meter? You're like, I'm pretty close to the boss. I'm gonna hold on to this each one has like a So no, it's per room. Mm-hmm So if you got it use it
00:39:42
Speaker
But it's much more helpful for those elongated boss fights like the bone hydra. Yeah. Like a lot of shit's going on. You're like, fuck, you just pop your trigger and go do your double trigger. Different game. We have to have Jenny on for that.
00:39:57
Speaker
Yeah. But that's really cool. And now they also have the addition of duo boons. Yeah. Where you can have like a synergized boon between two gods. I've only gotten one of them and I don't remember exactly what it was. Is it like offered by both gods at once or is it like you got a boon from each god and then they combined or how's that work?
00:40:19
Speaker
I didn't do a lot of research on this. Have you gotten any new opens yet? I got one. I don't remember what it was or the details. Catch it, catch it. It was a drunken haze stumbling through Hades. Haze through Hades, new stream title. Things I would do.
00:40:38
Speaker
Yeah, I'll have to go back and play that at some point. They've done a really good game with that job. And, um, yeah, I'll just go with it. And, uh, I know like I had linked to a kind of like work in progress documentary on it.
00:40:54
Speaker
And I was like, and then I watched both episodes. And it's actually really cool. Who was that? It was like, um, was it level up? No. Who is it? Can't remember who made that. Anyways, just Google it. Hades, Hades documentary, and it'll be there. I feel bad I should know. That's all right. It's, uh, it's really cool kind of seeing them develop that game in real time.
00:41:18
Speaker
I mean, you don't really see them develop in real time. You can watch them on live stream. You kind of get to see their process. You're like, hey, like the team is meeting about this. Like we've hit like a hurdle here or like here's something we thought about for we wanted to implement a gun. This is before admin rail came out. Right. And just to get see snippets of the process or you'll see Darren Korb, bless you, Darren.
00:41:41
Speaker
We were recording voice lines for some characters. We were like, hey, I was thinking about tweaking this for the music, meeting with their creative director and other things, and the team just collaborating as a whole.

Gaming Merchandise Discussion

00:41:52
Speaker
It's a really cool team, honestly. The fact that they can get all that done with the small team that they have and then consistently put out high-quality games is...
00:42:01
Speaker
Crazy. Yeah, my only gripe about Them is I wish they had better merch. Yeah, a lot of the merch is like Well for me like I have no more space for posters. Yeah, I'm done with that. I got a cool pyre shirt But I wish they'd have more in the way of like cool plushies or figures. Yeah or just like I know they commissioned somebody for like a custom
00:42:29
Speaker
Is it a Kaldonian hammer from Bastion? Okay, yeah. Ceylonian? Ceylonian? Ceylonian is a word that's from Bastion, I remember that. A hammer from Bastion? Yeah. And it was like a scale replica and looked really bitchin', but it was a part of like some giveaway. Okay.
00:42:45
Speaker
It obviously wouldn't be, wouldn't make sense to like consistently have it on their merch lineup. Yeah. But just having something else be really cool. In the same way, like for Bioshock, I love Bioshock. My room is covered in Bioshock. I have Bioshock that too. Confirmed. It's rule 34 all over the walls.
00:43:07
Speaker
I told you it's paint, it's not. I just really like that era of things and the styling, yada, yada, yada. The fictional era. Well, I mean... I know what you mean, the aesthetic.
00:43:24
Speaker
But like their merch again kind of sucks. I was like, maybe I can get like vigor bottles. Oh my gosh. I don't know that they have actual replicas of them, but none of them are cheaper than $300. Fuck off. Ken Levine. Fuck you. That's a pretty, pretty expensive buy-in. I always like, I want the transistor sword. I want like a replica of that. They also did a giveaway with that too.
00:43:50
Speaker
Yeah, that's a giveaway. I would like kill the other participants. So to increase my odds. Yeah. That's just super badass. Yeah. Like that's something I would be like, get two pins and kind of just like hang it up in the wall and be like, yeah. And then if anybody ever broke into my house, I would just reach for that. They'd be like, what is that? I'm like, I don't know. Please don't make me hit you with it. I wasn't, it will break. I care about it so much. I've killed many people to retain this blade.
00:44:16
Speaker
Yeah, that's what giveaways week though. You're talking about plushes. The other thing was um continuing this Uh Hammond came out as a plush on the overwatch store. You can get a little you get like a foot tall little Hammond plush little little rodent For a second. I was thinking of Winston Your whole description. I was like, okay, that's kind of kind of cute. Yeah, Hammond's much cuter. Yes Hammond is a cute character
00:44:39
Speaker
And they were like, um, they're like, I wish it was like a little bit bigger. And it's like, it's already a foot tall. If they made it two inches taller, it would be the actual size of Hammond in universe. Is it of Hammond and Mac or is it just just, just, just the, uh, the rodent itself? Um,
00:44:56
Speaker
But yeah, it's, it's pretty cool. And I like, I like blushes. You have like, um, kind of just collect little plushes and things like that. Birds. We got like a penguin. I got a little like octopus. I've been to your house. Where is this shit? I mean, like, usually they're just like with pillows and stuff like that. So they're not really out there, but I had like a reversible octopus that I got for, uh, Jenny. And it's like, yeah, I saw that one. That was awesome. It's like black. And then onto green.
00:45:23
Speaker
actually if you remember where you got that i kind of want to yeah i can find it i can find it let me just put the amazon referral link in the description so you guys can get me money and now but um it's cool when we have like a little penguin lieutenant feet um it's his name
00:45:39
Speaker
uh that sounds like a blizzard inspired name it's it's i don't i don't know i think jenny names these things that's just how it goes but yeah they're cool so i'm tempted whenever i see that stuff pop up but the blizzard store sells out like instantly
00:45:58
Speaker
I really wanted the, um, the overwatch jacket as well. Cause it was like overwatch and a jacket. I have a lot of those and then it's like, Hey, we're available in like extra, extra, extra large and nothing else. Like every other size is completely sold out. I'm like, well, I'd like to be able to wear it as well. Right. You and your wife can wear it at the same time. It's pretty silly, but.
00:46:25
Speaker
Yeah, that's basically slap city for you. I think is the main takeaway there. Yeah. There's not a whole lot to talk about beyond it. Um, it's like a fun little pickup. Um, but it's, it's pretty meanie. Yeah. Like, uh, the fish boonjin guy.
00:46:46
Speaker
A lot of, like, one of my favorites is like, he has like a grab. Yeah. And if you just, oh, I'm gonna throw them forward. He like has you buy like scruffier neck. Yes. And then the forward grab, he just puts you in his hand, which is like gigantic. Just blows air at you. Blows air and you just get blown away.
00:47:05
Speaker
I thought it was actually when you use that the first time, I thought you were just whiffing the grab like I escaped or something. I was like, okay, because I wasn't like high percent. But no, that's the grab completing. He also has the punch, which like, oh, yeah, doesn't make any sense as far as actually playing the game, but it's hilarious. It's there. Yeah.
00:47:24
Speaker
But again, in Dunkey's video, he does it. But if you do like a down power move, if you release it immediately, you can just do like a quick punch in the ground. But if you hold it, it will channel and it can deal more damage. But you see like the fist kind of like...
00:47:39
Speaker
Slowly gain power DBZ style. Yeah, we're like you see energy in the hand or maybe it's fire Mm-hmm, but then eventually it goes into like a fucking galaxy Galaxy spending at this point you've been channeling it for like 25 seconds. Yes, and then when you find the release It's a pretty big area Like a good section of the screen. Mm-hmm. That will be the blast radius. There's no tell for it Yeah, but it's really the side of the screen. You'll be fine
00:48:05
Speaker
You can literally, like, stand behind him and that's a good counter too, right? Or attack him. I don't know if you can be behind. Oh, it actually has a... Yeah, if you attack, I can interrupt it immediately, which sucks. But it can instantly kill somebody. You just have to have them not move for 30 seconds. Yeah, it's a little harder to pull off.
00:48:28
Speaker
but it's hilarious. It's there. That's a very indicative of the type of game that it is. It's like this literally serves no purpose except to make people laugh like one time, but we'll put it in there anyways, right? It's not like even like a smash move or something where it's like really hard to pull off, but if you pull it off, it's awesome. Like the Ness recovery. Oh my God. I love, I hope, I hope I do it tonight. Just do that for all full style. Yeah.
00:48:56
Speaker
But yeah, it's not viable. No. It's just Mimi. That's it. But some of his stuff is viable, like he has a...
00:49:07
Speaker
He kind of like puts his hands on his shoulders. Like he's going to do like a trust fall. And I think that's the one that can't, one of the ones that cannot be interrupted through attacks. And he just kind of like falls backwards, but you have to be facing the opposite way, obviously. Yeah. All right. So what is the going price for time these days? One second.
00:49:31
Speaker
One second here. Checking up the going price for time. Looking at the stock market. Time is up. There's the New York Times. You can read some stuff from this. This is March 15th.
00:49:48
Speaker
All right, that's it. We made it back. That's as much time as I could possibly buy.
