Importance of Taking Breaks for Creativity

Take breaks from your normal routine, especially when you're making pottery. What is up Shaping Nation? This is Nick Torres here, and on this episode I'm going to be explaining the importance of why it's good to take breaks from your normal routine and how this will actually help you find your own unique pottery voice.

So very recently. I interviewed Nicole Dacey. And she said that she was it was during covid and she was kind of her and her husband were kind of tired of just being stuck inside the whole all the time. And so what they decided was they decided to take a trip to Joshua Tree, which is like two hours or so away from where she lives. But because of this trip to Joshua Tree,
00:00:46

This is where so many things started beginning to happen with her own pottery.

Benefits of Short Breaks in Busy Lives

And because she took that break, she took a break from being in the house all the time, she took a break from just the normal everyday stuff. New ideas started flooding into her mind, and she didn't even mean for it to happen. She just saw an experience, she just had an experience at Joshua Tree, and she absolutely loved the experience, and new ideas started coming to her mind about her own pottery.

And that's why I think it's so important for us to take a break from our normal routine because if we get into that routine too, too much, then you get stuck. You get stuck doing the same thing over and over and over again. That's when a rut begins to start to emerge because you're doing the same thing over and over and over again that you already know the results. You know everything that's going to happen.

And so if you take a break, literally just change up your routine, take a break from your routine and do something completely out of the ordinary. Like, for example, if you are a wheel thrower, maybe try hand building, maybe try sculpting for a little while.

and see where that takes you. Break that routine so that you can get new fresh ideas. And who knows, maybe it won't spark any ideas.

Incorporating Breaks into Daily Routine

But that's completely fine because that's giving you time to experiment, it's giving you time to rejuvenate yourself, and it probably might even get you more excited to get back into the studio because you're taking a break from your normal things that you do.
00:02:16
Speaker
But how exactly can you do this in your day to day? And especially if you are somebody that works or somebody that has kids, it's hard to take breaks when you have those obstacles in your way. So something that you could do is take a break for just an hour, five minutes, 30 minutes, 10 minutes. Just take a break for that little bit of time
00:02:42

breathe a little bit, just take a break from that normal routine so that you can have a fresher mind. Because I know for sure that when my mom, if my mom would have took more breaks, she probably wouldn't have been so overwhelmed, overstimulated all the time. Like, especially raising four kids to me and my brother would rest all the time and I'm sure would get on her nerves all the time. But I'm sure if she took more breaks and just
00:03:11

had a little bit of a break for herself sometimes, she probably would have been a little bit better. And not to say I love my mom, but it definitely would have helped her a lot if she just took some breaks.

And it's the same thing with our pottery. We just have to take a break. We have to get out of that normal routine so we can start getting fresh ideas and we come back refreshed as well. That's why it's so important to take breaks. So schedule out a time to make breaks, maybe five minutes, 10 minutes, an hour, maybe it's a whole week or month. And you're not doing the same routine. Like I said earlier, if you're a wheel thrower, try hand building. Try building a giant coil built vase or sculpting something really unique.

and new ideas will start flooding in.
