Bob McFerrin's Influence: Happiness vs. Worry

00:00:05
Speaker
Don't worry. Be happy.
00:00:12
Speaker
Amen.
00:00:16
Speaker
Perhaps Bob McFerrin, 1980s reggae artist and theologian, maybe he was on to something.
00:00:30
Speaker
Don't worry. Be happy.
00:00:34
Speaker
Brothers and sisters, if you only knew of your position and your promises that were given to you by God and the power that you have in Christ, your Christian walk would be one of happiness and not of worry.
00:00:50
Speaker
How many of my warriors are out there today? Not warriors. Worry-ers.
00:00:59
Speaker
Why do we live in fear and worry?

Understanding Power in Christ: Fear vs. Faith

00:01:02
Speaker
Why aren't we living powerfully for Christ?
00:01:06
Speaker
Either we don't know that we have access to His power, or we'd rather simply try things in our own strength.
00:01:16
Speaker
Maybe you're here this morning and you're tired of doing things in your own strength. And you're wondering why your Christian walk is filled with fear and worry, and not joy and happiness.
00:01:28
Speaker
Well, if that's you, today's sermon is all for you. This is what we're going to look at today as we continue our study in Ephesians. First, we're going to look at the problem. That problem is our fearfulness.
00:01:41
Speaker
Second, we'll look at the solution to that problem, which is God's powerfulness. And third, we're going to look at how we can live powerfully for Christ. If you want to be fearless, can I hear an amen?
00:01:57
Speaker
If you want to be fearless, let me hear an amen.
00:02:01
Speaker
I invite you to open your Bibles with me here. the book of Ephesians chapter 1. We're going to continue where we picked up or where we left off

Paul's Message to Ephesians: Transformation through God's Power

00:02:09
Speaker
last week. We left off in verse 14 last week.
00:02:13
Speaker
Today's passage is 15 through 23. You'll remember last week as we looked at God's glorious plan. If you were here, you'll remember that. This big plan, this glorious plan to consummate eventually all things in Christ.
00:02:29
Speaker
Everything will be fixed at some point. creation which is broken will be fixed. He will come back and he will fix it all and that you and I who have placed our faith in him, we've been chosen or predestined or redeemed, forgiven.
00:02:47
Speaker
We've been given every spiritual blessing necessary to lead a satisfied Christian life. That was all part of that grand cosmic plan and Paul picks up on that here today and he starts kind of very similarly with how he left off, he says, for all those things that you've been rightly given, we should give God praise.
00:03:12
Speaker
Because you are in Christ, he's telling the Ephesian church, you'll see, they are all in Christ. He says his prayer for them is that they should comprehend, meaning they should grasp the very great power that God has placed within them.
00:03:30
Speaker
that great power, brothers and sisters, will make you fearless. So if you're not leading a fearless life, perhaps you don't have access to that power. That's what we're going to see here today. Read with me Ephesians chapter 1, starting in verse 15. New Living Translation says, Ever since I first heard of your strong faith in the Lord Jesus and your love for God's people everywhere, i have not stopped thanking God for you.
00:03:59
Speaker
I pray for you constantly, asking God, the glorious Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, to give you spiritual wisdom and insight so that you might grow in your knowledge of God.
00:04:13
Speaker
I pray that your hearts will be flooded with light so that you can understand
00:04:20
Speaker
the confident hope He has given to those He's called, His holy people, who are His rich and glorious inheritance. Second, he says, I also pray that you will understand the incredible greatness of God's power for us who believe him.
00:04:39
Speaker
This is the same mighty power that raised Christ from the dead and seated him in the place of honor at God's right hand in the heavenly realms. Now he is far above any ruler or authority or power or leader or anything else, not only in this world but also in the world to come.
00:04:59
Speaker
God has put all things under the authority of Christ, and he's made him over all things for the benefit of the church. And the church is his body. It is made full and complete by Christ, who fills all things everywhere with his self.
00:05:18
Speaker
Verse 15 in your translation may start this way, for this reason. He's telling us right here, Paul, is everything that I just talked about in verse 1 through 14 for this reason.
00:05:30
Speaker
All those blessings that you were given, that you were chosen, that you were predestined, that you were redeemed, that you were forgiven, that you have the indwelt spirit, that you have eternal life, that you have eternal inheritance, all for the glory of God, Paul says he's thankful that this church in Ephesus, these believers, are living powerfully for God.
00:05:53
Speaker
I'll just put a note to myself this week. How great would that have been if you're in that church? How great would that have been if the Apostle Paul was pointing you guys out? Hey, FBC Cameron, good job.
00:06:06
Speaker
You guys are knocking it out of the park. You're living powerfully for Christ. This is Paul, a champion of the faith, giving this group of believers an attaboy.
00:06:19
Speaker
That's the other word I wrote. An attaboy.
00:06:24
Speaker
praising them for demonstrating both, you'll see here in the text, faith in the Lord Jesus. want you to highlight that, if you're somebody who highlights their circles.
00:06:35
Speaker
He's praising them because of their faith in the Lord Jesus, and second, their love for all the saints. He's praising them for the their faith in the Lord Jesus, and second, the love of their fellow believers, their fellow brothers and sisters in Christ there in Ephesus.
00:06:52
Speaker
Both of these, faith in the Lord Jesus Christ and the love of your brothers and sisters are balancing each other out here.
00:07:04
Speaker
Faith in Christ apart from loving your brothers and sisters is dead or incomplete. And love for your brothers and sisters apart from faith in Jesus Christ just makes us another social service provider.

Root Causes of Fear and Worry: Knowledge and Identity

00:07:19
Speaker
Friends, many churches today in America are just this. They're just like the Cameron Thrift Store.
00:07:28
Speaker
Do you know that? They provide a service. and It allows the fellow brothers and sisters for a fancy place to come in, the air conditioning, and the fancy lights and the fancy cameras, the fancy pulpit.
00:07:44
Speaker
And we get to stand here and provide a service.
00:07:50
Speaker
And you guys are the consumers.
00:07:54
Speaker
Some churches are like that. The Ephesus church is not like that. Our church, brothers and sisters, is not like that.
00:08:03
Speaker
We have real meaning here because we have our vertical relationship right. We have this right relationship with Jesus Christ. That right relationship with Jesus Christ equally plays out now in all of our horizontal relationships that you and I have.
00:08:21
Speaker
If that's not the case, we have inadequate faith. Both of these are crucial. We must have a vertical relationship with Christ, and we must have a horizontal relationship with one another.
00:08:35
Speaker
Both are a healthy sign of a good church.
00:08:41
Speaker
Now I put on the contrary.
00:08:49
Speaker
this. We lead lives of worry or doubt or fear.
00:08:55
Speaker
And I just put why this week. This is the whole crux of what I studied this whole week. Why do we have lives of fear and worry? It's kind of the same question I posed to our Bible study class today.
00:09:09
Speaker
If God is faithful and he does not lie, and he says something and he delivers on that promise, what do we have to worry about?
00:09:20
Speaker
What do we have to fear?
00:09:25
Speaker
We'll get back to that just a second.
00:09:29
Speaker
Part of my study this week kept coming back around to maybe we fear and worry because we don't know what God's Word says. i were not Maybe we're not familiar enough with what God's Word says.
00:09:42
Speaker
Maybe we don't know who Christ is. Or what he's done for us. Or what that impact has on your life and my life. Maybe we don't simply understand who we are in this new relationship with Christ.
00:09:55
Speaker
Maybe we don't understand the promises that he's given us.
00:09:59
Speaker
If we don't know it, this leads to an inadequate faith. A faith that's lacking, a faith that's wanting, a faith that's insufficient. It's a faith that if you're an unbeliever and you're outside here in Cameron and they see you, it's a faith that screams that person doesn't know their Bible.
00:10:22
Speaker
It just does. Now, knowing your Bible doesn't solve all things. We don't find salvation in the Bible. We find salvation in Jesus Christ.
00:10:33
Speaker
But the Bible points us to who Jesus is. So do you see the necessity of the Bible? We have to know it. and i and i And I thought today as a good example, illustration if you will, I would point the mirror back on myself.
00:10:49
Speaker
Kim and I were on vacation a couple weeks ago, and as we were driving back, this semi smashed my car mirror on on the side of my truck.
00:11:00
Speaker
I don't know if I was too far over if he was too far my way, that's for another sermon. But he smashed it, and it could have been so bad. But what I had to do was had to buy a new mirror.
00:11:13
Speaker
So I bought a new mirror, and my loving wife said, do you know what you're doing? Do you know how to put that on? I said, well, course I did. Then I went to YouTube, and I watched a video.
00:11:25
Speaker
But in this video, this guy at the very end says, if you have problems, all you need to do is refer to the manual.
00:11:35
Speaker
Refer to the manual? Where is that manual? That was the first thing I thought, where did put that manual at?
00:11:42
Speaker
On the video, it said all you have to do to get your automatic defrost on this mirror working is to refer to your manual.
00:11:52
Speaker
i And church family, I have to confess, I said, I have defrost on my mirror? I've been rolling down the mirror all this time, sticking my hand out.
00:12:04
Speaker
I only knew what the owner manual said. If you only knew what the owner manual said.
00:12:14
Speaker
Friends, if you don't know the manual, you don't know what's inside, how are you ever going to live according to what he expects? How are we ever going to have adequate faith? And without adequate faith, how are we expected to love our brothers and sisters adequately?
00:12:30
Speaker
That's our next point. we often demonstrate inadequate love.
00:12:36
Speaker
Without a solid belief in Christ, without a right re vertical relationship with Christ, our horizontal relationships all suffer.
00:12:46
Speaker
If you don't know who Christ is and what He's done for us, or how He's shown us this great kind of sacrificial love, If you don't know what it means to be in Christ, to be part of the family, to have all the benefits and blessings that come with that membership, if you don't know any of that, how are you ever going to love your brothers and sisters well?
00:13:07
Speaker
In fact, you're going to love them poorly. One of our former pastors used to say this. He used to say, the church is a hospital for sinners and not a country club for saints.

Community and the Bible: Overcoming Fear Together

00:13:21
Speaker
And Billy Crouch dropped his Bible right there. That's how impactful that statement is. The church often and should be a hospital for sinners and not a country club for saints.
00:13:34
Speaker
When we don't have adequate faith, when we don't have a solid belief in Christ, when our vertical relationship with Christ isn't right, friends, what happens is in the church and our church family is we try to reach out to our brothers and sisters and we simply don't know how to love them well.
00:13:50
Speaker
And what happens is when we don't do that, we become the Cameron Thrift Store. We become a country club for saints. We become a really fancy building which all of us come in and we sit down and we shake hands and we tell everybody, hey, it's good to see you on Sunday morning.
00:14:08
Speaker
And, oh, I hope things are going well. And then you simply pass on.
00:14:14
Speaker
If we don't have this right relationship vertically, we will never be able to love horizontally. Both elements are needed. Both elements balance balance each other out. So what's the solution I put today?
00:14:27
Speaker
What's the answer to living powerful for Christ? If it's not relying on our own power, which we answered this in our Bible study class, you know what kind of power do you and I have apart from Christ?
00:14:39
Speaker
And the answer is zilch or none. Or if you're German, nein.
00:14:50
Speaker
Nothing. We have no power without Christ in our lives. We must rely on God's power. Paul tells us, look, verse 17, he says, I ah pray that God, the glorious Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, gives you spiritual wisdom and insight.
00:15:06
Speaker
Two things, both together. Spiritual wisdom and insight. So that you might, what? Two things. Three things he says here. First, grow in the knowledge of God.
00:15:17
Speaker
So this means studying God's Word. Two, understand the confident hope that he has given to those that he's called. And three, which is found in verse 19. Look with me, verse 9. You will understand this incredible power that God has and he's given to you to use. You have direct access to that.
00:15:40
Speaker
What's the solution for living powerful life for Christ? It's not relying on our own power. It's simply relying on God's power. Which power is that? This is mind-blowing, by the way. if you If you have read this, you might have simply read right over this.
00:15:56
Speaker
This power is so mind-blowing that you and I have within us an access to us. It's the same power that raised Christ from the dead. Resurrection power.
00:16:09
Speaker
That power you have access to. It's that same power that not only resurrected him, but has placed him in a seat of honor on the right hand of God in the heavenly realms.
00:16:23
Speaker
Repeat after me. have access to that power. I have access to that power. What's the scope of that power?
00:16:34
Speaker
We'll look at verse 23 with me. Verse 23, jump down.
00:16:40
Speaker
It says, Now he is far above...
00:16:45
Speaker
Any ruler. If you're somebody who circles or underlines, maybe you circle any. He's far above any ruler or any authority or any power or any leader or anything else.
00:16:58
Speaker
That means he's above it all. The scope of that power extends further and is greater than any other power. Why is Paul bringing this point up?
00:17:10
Speaker
here to this church in Ephesians. he's He's telling them, friends, you live in Cameron. he's very He's being very specific here. You live in
00:17:31
Speaker
So these new Christians that are coming in that are doing such a great job are all surrounded by all these idols. And all of these idols have their own little power, if you will.
00:17:43
Speaker
If you needed to have a baby, you went to the fertility god, lower lowercase g. right You prayed for fertility. If you need crops, you went to the crops god.
00:17:55
Speaker
Each one of these gods, little g, had some type of power, the pagans believed. Paul says all that is nonsense. There's one God, he's our Lord Jesus Christ, and he's over it all.
00:18:08
Speaker
His power is bigger than any power. So I often think to myself when I get in such a dire situation, and I think to myself, Lord, how am I ever going to get myself out of this?
00:18:19
Speaker
The Lord is very quick to remind me, you can't without me. You need my power. Your power is limited. Your power is pebbles.
00:18:30
Speaker
My power is huge.
00:18:34
Speaker
And the beautiful part about that, brothers sisters, is right here, that the church, the body, us believers, have as the head of the body this powerful Christ.
00:18:47
Speaker
He's over us. Do you realize that? That when you are in the family, he's the head of the family. Just like if you are somebody who believes biblically in the traditional family, that there is one husband and one wife.
00:19:01
Speaker
And it says biblically, the husband is the head of that marriage, just as Christ is the head of the church. He's all powerful, this Jesus Christ is.
00:19:13
Speaker
He's above everything. And as everything is in submission, everything on, above, and below this earth is under his

Christ's Supreme Power: Relying on the Ultimate Authority

00:19:23
Speaker
power. It's under his authority. It's under his, I like this, feet, if your translation says.
00:19:28
Speaker
Right? Everything that you think holds some type of power or strength over you, it says it's right under Christ's feet. He's above it all.
00:19:40
Speaker
So I just put it up to myself, why would we go anywhere else for any other type of power? If he's over it all and he's all powerful, he's the guy we go to.
00:19:51
Speaker
I was trying to think of who the big energy company, is it Centerpoint out here? Who's the big, Houston it was Centerpoint Energy. Who is it? Encore. they're They are the guy. Now they sell a bunch other sub-electric companies, right? Sell a bunch of other electricity to you.
00:20:08
Speaker
But if your electricity goes out, you don't ever call those sub-guides they ain't really have any control. They just pick up the phone and they call Encore. Why go to any those other little powers in your life when you can simply go direct to the source, Jesus Christ?
00:20:27
Speaker
He's there, it says, for the benefit of the church. He's there to provide His power to you and I. Repeat after me. I have access to that power.
00:20:43
Speaker
Verse 23 says, And the church is His body. It's made full and complete by Christ who fills it and in things everywhere within Himself. Your translation may read, The church is the fullness of Him which fills all in all.
00:20:59
Speaker
How can we be full of the Lord? Well, the church is where the headship of Jesus is enjoyed.
00:21:06
Speaker
I've heard this often in my Christian walk. You may have heard something very similar. I simply like to study the Bible by myself. I don't have to go to church to study my Bible.
00:21:18
Speaker
How many y'all heard that? Yeah. Immediately, two things come to mind when I hear that. You don't study your Bible, because if you did, you would know what the Bible says that you're supposed to be in community.
00:21:32
Speaker
It's not the heart of the Father, you know, for us to just be out little solo islands by ourselves studying God's word.
00:21:45
Speaker
We're meant to come together and to study and to be taught. This is why we one of the fruits of the Spirit is teachers, right? If that wasn't the case, why would God provide us teachers?
00:21:57
Speaker
It is so that they may teach the Bible to you.
00:22:04
Speaker
I have a an example here. I hope you can relate to this.
00:22:11
Speaker
I put, what if a father came home at night and he simply said, all right, kids, grab your plates, put the dinner on the plates yourselves, and go into your room and have Sunday dinner all by yourself.
00:22:30
Speaker
Now, would those kids get nutrition from that meal?
00:22:38
Speaker
They would. They would survive. But is that really what gathering together for a meal is all about? Kind of the same thing when it comes to studying the Bible. Can you do it on your own? You bet. Should you do it on your own?
00:22:50
Speaker
You bet. But you come together and you study and learn God's Word together. Why is that important? I simply wrote this down so that we don't go to the left or to the right.
00:23:05
Speaker
You ever been bowling? Unless you're a really good bowler, guess what's going to happen? That ball's going to go to the left. I know, Vicki's over there. She's like, I can't relate to this. Don't ever bowl with Vicki. I'm just going to tell you that right now. She is a bowling shark.
00:23:20
Speaker
She knows what she's doing. She'll take your money.
00:23:25
Speaker
Most of us, when we bowl, the ball goes to the left or to the right? Right? The same can happen when you study the Bible on your own. Because what we up doing we get in our own head and we go, I end up thinking that means this to me.
00:23:38
Speaker
Until you get in a group of people and nine out of the ten people go, yeah, that's not what that means at all. And I will tell you as your pastor, some of the best teaching moments I've ever had is when I've had godly instructors just go, hey, that's very interesting what you said, but...
00:23:56
Speaker
Let me share what somebody taught me. And it's generational, right? It's passed down. This is what God's word says. This is what it means. This is how you apply it, right? Some of the best teaching moments I've got. he's He's telling them here, brothers and sisters, get together. There's real power as you get together and you study God's word.
00:24:17
Speaker
You have direct access, I put here, right to the resurrected Christ. The same power that resurrected him from the dead. It's all encompassing. meaning there's nothing that's left out, there's nothing that His power can't handle, and if that's the case, why aren't we utilizing that power in our lives?
00:24:35
Speaker
This is where I want to land today, just for the next couple of minutes.
00:24:39
Speaker
If we know God's Word, we have adequate faith in Jesus.

Christ as Savior and Lord: Life Transformation

00:24:44
Speaker
That means that we know Him as our Lord and Savior.
00:24:48
Speaker
And we try to understand, the best of our ability, our position in Christ. And all those promises that come in Christ.
00:24:58
Speaker
If that's the case, if that's you, if I'm describing you right now, if you're a believer and you have this right vertical relationship with Christ, and you're trying to live out this horizontal relationship, if this is you, how do we do that powerfully for Christ this week?
00:25:19
Speaker
This is where i want to land today. Hopefully we're on our last point here. Live powerfully. If you have your outlines, this is why it's beneficial to have your outline. You know, whoa, he's real close to finishing.
00:25:33
Speaker
If you're wondering why your Christian walk is filled with worry and fear and not joy and happiness, might I suggest that you start with your vertical relationship with Christ.
00:25:44
Speaker
For those of you who don't have that relationship, that's where you start. Have you been trying to live life in your own strength and it's not working out? Are you here today and you feel lost or directionless or you're wandering or you're looking for answers?
00:26:00
Speaker
Perhaps you haven't given your life over to Jesus just yet. My question to you is when or why. Or maybe you've given your life to Jesus but you only know him as Savior and not Lord.
00:26:14
Speaker
Friends, there's a huge difference. Pay attention real quick. There's a huge difference in those two.
00:26:21
Speaker
knowing Him as both Lord and Savior. you understand that's not just a title, it's not just something we give Him in the Bible. My fear is many of you sitting here today in these pews for decades simply know Him as Savior and not as Lord.
00:26:42
Speaker
I say this as your pastor, lovingly, that perhaps you're here and you recognize you needed a Savior. and you've given your life over to Him because you needed saving.
00:26:56
Speaker
But He's not Lord over your life. What does it mean for Him to be a Lord over your life? Well, it means that you submit every area of your life to Him.
00:27:07
Speaker
It says, I'm no longer the head of my life. I'm not running the show. You're running the show. You know what's best for me. You're my Lord.
00:27:20
Speaker
Even if you think about it just in the old time sake of kings and queens. You know, as a servant, you were under them. You were under your Lord, lowercase l-o-r-d. It's no different, brothers and sisters, when you come to a saving faith in Christ. you You place your life in his hands and he becomes Lord.
00:27:44
Speaker
That means that you surrender your finances to him. You surrender your marriage to him. You surrender your kids to them and your kids' salvation to Him.
00:27:58
Speaker
I don't know what happened to my kids. Boy, they went off the curb. They went off the deep end. They went in the gutter. What did I ever do wrong?
00:28:10
Speaker
I was in church every Sunday, twice on Wednesdays. Why do my kids turn out that way?
00:28:19
Speaker
Maybe that's some of you today. Maybe you're echoing the same thing that's going on in my head.
00:28:27
Speaker
Your kids' salvation is not up to you. It's up to them. It's between them and God.
00:28:39
Speaker
Your finances, your relationships, everything, every aspect must be fully submitted. Then He is Lord. Lord.

Serving with Spiritual Gifts: Building Relationships and Joy

00:28:53
Speaker
For some of you today, that means getting right with God.
00:28:57
Speaker
For some of you, that means handing your life over to Him as Savior. For the others of you, that means making Him Lord over your life.
00:29:07
Speaker
How do I do that? When Cindy plays here in just a few seconds, you're going to say, i don't know what I'm doing, but I'm standing up. I don't know why I'm standing up.
00:29:17
Speaker
I've been in this pew for decades, but I know... Jesus is not the Lord of my life.
00:29:28
Speaker
If that's you, don't miss this opportunity when she plays.
00:29:32
Speaker
I'll stand right down front and I'll wait for you as an ambassador with open arms.
00:29:41
Speaker
Well, you say, that's not me, Pastor. I have a great relationship with Jesus as my Lord and Savior. I know Him personally that way. If that's you this morning and you're wondering, okay, why is my Christian walk filled with worry and fear?

How do I do that, Pastor? Well, that's a great question to ask. How do I serve my brothers and sisters here, sacrificially? If that's what Jesus is asking me to do, what what and how do I do that?
00:30:28
Speaker
Well, let me give you some encouragement. Boy, it's difficult.
00:30:35
Speaker
Boy, it's costly.
00:30:38
Speaker
Boy, it's worth it.
00:30:41
Speaker
Maybe if you feel like I'm not pouring into my brothers and sisters here, it's because you're not.
00:30:51
Speaker
Maybe you feel like I'm not loving my brothers and sisters here in FBC Cameron. Well, it's because you're not.
00:31:01
Speaker
Maybe it means reaching out to them, calling them, dropping by their house, stepping out of your comfort zone and stepping into their messy life.
00:31:14
Speaker
That's what it'll take. It'll take inconvenience on your part.

Speaker
Oh, I want to go to the Cameron Pool this afternoon. Sit out enjoy the sun. Or do I go visit two or three people here in church that have struggled or fallen or sick?
00:31:40
Speaker
Or can you do both?
00:31:43
Speaker
It's often inconvenient. It's often unreciprocated. but But brothers and sisters, it's so worth it. All throughout my ministry life, I've had people come up to me many, many years later and say, hey, I remember this one time you, and they you fill in the blank.

You called. You stopped by. You saw me. You put a hand on my shoulder. I had one guy just tell me that's all it took. I just put a hand on his shoulder. Didn't say anything. It meant the world to him.
00:32:13
Speaker
How do you serve in some capacity here at the church? Well, you simply look at the spiritual gift that God's given you, and we all have them, and you use that. If you can sing, guess what? There's a whole choir up here needing you and your voice.
00:32:27
Speaker
And we have more chairs, by the way. We just moved those chairs around for a different look today.
00:32:35
Speaker
Maybe you serve... Well, that's your gift. Maybe you simply are somebody who's an organizer. That's a gift. We need you.
00:32:45
Speaker
Maybe you're a Bible teacher. We need you. Maybe you're somebody who's a prayer warrior. We need you.
00:32:54
Speaker
Imagine for a second, if you will, how fantastic this church would be if everybody was serving in some capacity. If everybody here found out what that spiritual gift was and said, I know it's going to be inconvenient, I know it's going to be bothersome, but I'm going to go out and I'm going to serve this church this way.
00:33:14

Think about how much joy and happiness that would bring you. Think about how much joy and happiness it would bring your fellow brother and sister in Christ. Church family, this is what the Apostle Paul is calling us today.
00:33:28
Speaker
to be that kind of church, to be that kind of people that have a right relationship with Christ and a right relationship with our brothers and sisters.

May our anthem song be, Don't Worry, Be Happy. And all God's people said,
