On this episode of Shaping Your Pottery we talk about the mistakes that happen when pulling the clay.

There are two types of mistakes when pulling the clay Outside forces and Inside forces

Outside forces are what you can't control like how hard the clay gets or airbubbles

Inside forces are what you can control like the speed of the wheel

The more you limit you mistakes the more success you will have!

Common Mistakes in Pottery Pulling Techniques

00:00:15
Speaker
What is up my pottery shapers and welcome to Shaping Your Pottery with Nick Torres. In this episode, I'm going to be talking about some of the pulling mistakes that happened when we were making pottery.
00:00:27
Speaker
Now mistakes while pulling they can be something that is outside factor but is also it can be inside factors. So let me start with an outside factor and outside factor is
00:00:40
Speaker
Your clay can be too hard, so it makes it very difficult to center. It makes it very difficult to do anything. I recommend beginners to use a little bit softer clay so that way they aren't having a hard time really doing anything. Another outside factor is frickin' air bubbles. Air bubbles are the worst. I will tell you this right now, they absolutely suck, because you don't know when they're gonna pop up, and you can wedge your clay as much as you want sometimes, and it just won't happen. They'll be air bubbles.
00:01:10

Another thing is there will be some pieces like maybe some wood in your clay. It happens sometimes. We find all sorts of things in our clay and when that happens you can either try to muscle it out and try to deal with it
00:01:25
Speaker
or just a much quicker option, just get a new piece of clay and start over. That is usually what I do, but that is up to you if you really wanna make something.

Errors in Speed and Pressure Application

00:01:35
Speaker
So now, what are some actual technique mistakes? So the first thing is, again, it is going too fast. Going too fast is way, way worse. It's so worse. You're gonna really make mistakes if you're going too fast.
00:01:54
Speaker
And if you go too fast, it is not good. So we have to learn to slow down. Slow down first now so you can go faster later. Another mistake that a lot of
00:02:06
Speaker
people make while pulling is that they're not pushing putting enough pressure on the outside hand and the inside hand they just kind of let it they barely put enough pressure and you can barely see it moving going up so you have to put pressure you have to find your pressure sometimes you may fail but sometimes you may you may not you have to find your pressure that works for you so another mistake is

Importance of Posture and Arm Control

00:02:30
Speaker
that their arms are too loose they think that because the centering is done i don't need i don't really need to have the same posture but you do you need to have that same posture you need to be firm with the clay always even sometimes when you have to lift up your elbow your elbow was still locked in it's still not moving it's still not floppy arms so don't be floppy arms

Challenges in Shaping Wide Clay

00:02:55
Speaker
And the last mistake that I see a lot is that they let the clay get too wide. They're not coloring the clay into a cylinder. When it gets too wide, it becomes too difficult to work with. And that's how a lot of, again, mistakes happen. And then you don't get a shape that you want. So those are the four mistakes that usually I see.
