Bear With Us, Episode 6: Will Bruin chooses a quarantine house

All of us are handling this “stay home, stay safe” order in different ways. Some are getting house work done. Others are binging TV shows. A lot of us are simply trying to stay sane with a house full of people all the time.

Will Bruin, like the rest of the soccer world, is trying to balance staying in game shape with all of this stuff. It’s understandably wearing on him a bit.

That’s where we come in! In the latest episode of Bear With Us, we provided a list of six different houses full of six people —mostly current and former teammates of Will’s — and asked him to pick one house to ride out the quarantine in. We also found out that he’s doing a bit of “all of the above” from the list at the beginning.

Give it a listen.

Welcome back to another edition of the Will Bruin podcast, Bear With Us. I want a quarantined special edition of Bear With Us. Joining us are Will, of course, Lick It, and Emily Cummings, the guest star from her kitchen. Hello.
00:00:41
Speaker
Hell yeah.

Coping with Quarantine: Challenges and Motivation

00:00:42
Speaker
Yeah. So, um, Will, how, you, you sent out a tweet yesterday. I was feeling bad for you. I figured we needed to record this podcast. You know, yesterday was probably the toughest week of this quarantine. Just at the beginning, at the beginning, the first few weeks, you're like, all right, I'm going to crush everything at home, make sure I'm saying super fit, be really good when we come back. And then after like three weeks, you're like, all right, this is kind of getting old. I'm ready to go do some more stuff. But,
00:01:10
Speaker
We're about only halfway there, I think. So we'll just see how it goes. I gotta tell you, I think I had the same experience as you. Like the first week, very difficult. It was like getting your head around, you know, especially when you have kids at home, which obviously will can. He's sleeping. Yeah. He is sleeping. Yeah. He's napping right now. So it's a good thing. Good, good. Uh, like that first week was like a shock to your system. You're just trying to like get your mind around it. And then weeks two and three, I felt like were,
00:01:39
Speaker
You know, like, getting into the rhythm. This isn't too bad. It's gonna be bad.

Grocery Trips: Essential or Not?

00:01:44
Speaker
Last week, like a ton of bricks to the face. Yeah, that's what I think. And now it's like, at the beginning, I was like, oh yeah, I went to the grocery store, get some stuff, no problem. Now I'm like, do I really need to go get groceries? Like, is this a really essential stuff that we need to get right now? Even though it kind of is. I'm surprised the sounders aren't, like, Instacarting for you guys. I know. We need to get Sean on this. Yeah, seriously. Come on, Sean.
00:02:09
Speaker
You got it. You guys got it. You got all these, these, uh, physios that are just, I know they're running these zoom meetings of workouts. Why don't they just like, that's what I'm saying. Bring some coffee over. So you need to text someone and just see how much, how much clout you have and see to say, I'm at a toilet toilet paper, right? I don't know. Just text them and be like, Hey, I need toilet paper. Yeah. That's a good test.
00:02:35
Speaker
Wait, so what do you want on the list? Workouts. Uh, on Mondays we do it just to get weekly updates and, and we do like, cause we, they have, we have an in-home program and we just kind of do it together or make sure we're all chit chatting and camaraderie and stuff. So.
00:02:52
Speaker
So one of the things that I've picked up from various interviews and hearing other teams talk about this is it seems like the sounders are taking a little bit more of a long-term vision of saying like, we don't know when we're coming back so we don't want to overdo it with programming. Is that the sense that you get or is that just kind of what they're putting off into the world?
00:03:17
Speaker
tell us the real story, Will.

Player Training and Engagement During Uncertainty

00:03:19
Speaker
I mean, I don't, I honestly don't know a lot with everybody. Nobody knows. So like people that act like they know what's, when it's going to be happening, what's going on, they don't really like this thing changes from day to day and morphs into stuff day to day. So like, I think from my perspective, I think they're just trying to keep everybody engaged and you know, stay somewhat relevant in the scene because
00:03:41
Speaker
You know, when, when things aren't happening, games aren't being played, training's not happening. You know, if it's not there, kind of just get brushed under the rug and forget about it until, until it comes back. So I think they're just trying to play good games and keep everybody fresh on their toes, like when their sounder's coming back.
00:03:55
Speaker
When do you get a sense that does this feel like the right amount of engagement that you have with like, do you feel like you're hearing the appropriate amount from your coaches and from other team staff? Is it like, or do you think you'd feel better if it was more or less? No, I think it's enough. I mean, yeah, I mean, obviously you're not going to get updates every day because there are no updates to give. So I think we get weekly updates and I think that's enough. And Schmetz is good at being like, look, I pass the messages on whenever I get them and
00:04:25
Speaker
Unfortunately, no, like I said, nobody really knows. So it's kind of just wait and see and make sure we're doing what we can, which is stay fit, stay sharp, do whatever you can, because I'm sure whenever we come back, well, nobody knows that we're going to have one week of training, one day of training, two weeks of training, game, game, game, game, game, game. So it just, you just got to make sure you're not just sitting around binging Netflix 24 seven or playing war zone. Which one? What is war zone? I don't know this one.
00:04:54
Speaker
Call of Duty. Call of Duty. Come on, get with it too much. I am old. I don't play any video games. I tried to get myself to play Football Manager this week, which I don't even know if you know. By the way, Will, I was using the sounders on Football Manager. You had a couple hat tricks for me.
00:05:14
Speaker
there we go that's what i'm talking about yeah

TikTok and Trivia: Players' Activities

00:05:16
Speaker
i like this already yeah uh so it was and i i just i don't know why i can't get into the whole video game thing uh which lick it is much more much much more yeah well because you're old yes yes for sure that's definitely what it is crossing like everybody else
00:05:38
Speaker
I used to strictly only play Halo, and it's kind of just tailed off ever since Liam's gotten here, but now, during his naps and a lot of free time, I was like, I'll give this Call of Duty Warzone thing a chance, and I downloaded the free one, the Warzone, and I've been playing it. Gonna dab one with it 20 nights. Are other teammates on that one? It seems like you've got Fortnite guys and... I'm scared to play with other people because I'd bring the team down, I feel like.
00:06:03
Speaker
You know, I don't have the time to dedicate to be like, I'm going to get really good at this. Just get Steph to carry you. It's really good. I know. And I just have him revive me every time. Steph seems to be, be into a lot of these games. Him and Christian seem to be the two big, is that accurate? They're the two big gaming guys? I say Christian's just strictly Fortnite, I believe. That's dabbles with more. Steph's more intricate with his games and you know, it's kind of like his art. Right.
00:06:33
Speaker
So what are the sounders doing for you guys in terms of keeping you engaged, making sure you're not just playing Warzone or Netflix all day? The last two weeks, we've had Thursday night trivia. So that's been fun. But other than that, we got our Monday workouts. We've done Jake Bronowski, our massage therapist, also a yoga instructor. He's been doing yoga on Tuesday, Thursday and Fridays. Just optional stuff if you guys want to do stuff.
00:07:02
Speaker
Other than that, what else can you really do? It's a sports team. It's not like you can all get together and go train. That's right. Well, how have you been doing with that trivia night? Are you doing better than you did against Jess? I want to know who dominates. We have teams. It's teams. And my team hasn't won yet. But I'm convinced it's rigged because somehow the coaches seem to answer really quick. It would be very odd if they knew the questions prior to actual trivia.
00:07:33
Speaker
So are these like general trivia? Go ahead. I wasn't ready for that. I didn't expect it to be a whole big thing. I literally, Matt Winter was like, all right, just do this real quick, 15 minute thing. And I had actually was about to leave to go somewhere. So I got on FaceTime and did a real quick. And then after it was like, damn, I did not do good at that. I turned into this whole thing. So like, I want to reach. Okay. It just seemed to handle it pretty good.
00:08:01
Speaker
Yeah. Do what? Jess handled it fine. Like she didn't, she, she did like or knew how big of a deal it was going to be. One day it said, I got to do the space time. It went out on the deck, did it, and then hit the road. What was there was one that you missed that I thought was that was clearly like, yeah, what should have been a layup for you? Yeah. The Superbowl. The Superbowl. That's right. Because I watched the whole game. I don't know how I didn't get 49ers.
00:08:30
Speaker
and then even and then you got the you've nailed the kardashian one though yeah of course that's all the wife watches that a lot so i i just see that in the background sometimes i i just thought it was very you played it off like you weren't you weren't totally i know you like that like that that was good but i feel like i wasted too much time pulling it off yeah that's you yeah you kind of undermined your own i know i kind of efforts there yeah it kind of backfired on me
00:08:56
Speaker
So I'll tell you, the person who I think I've decided I'm most impressed, there's two people I'm particularly impressed by. Well, a few, I take it back. There's a few of your teammates who seem to be perfecting dance moves during this whole thing. Justin Dillon, obviously, doing some impressive work on TikTok with Jesse and Colin Fernandez. And then Jordan Morris coming out of nowhere with a well-rehearsed dance
00:09:26
Speaker
Yeah. And then New Who just pure joy in the park. Yeah, it's New Who. You know, he's just at the park dancing and juggling and doing all these tricks. I wouldn't expect anything else from New Who. So are any of those... We're at one of those three. Oh, go ahead. I would like to know how much practice went into that. I'll have to ask him that because, you know, the guy... Who joined? For who?
00:09:48
Speaker
for Jordan. Yeah, that's why I want to know how much practice because that didn't that looked like a lot of work that they put in. And I want to know how many takes. That's what I want to know. How many takes they actually did before they found the one they were going to use. Right. Yeah. That's with all the free time. Caitlin, my wife's been like, let's try some of these tik toks. I'm like, yeah, we'll do it tomorrow. We'll do it tomorrow. When is this point? They're hard. Six weeks later.
00:10:11
Speaker
Yeah, tomorrow. Yeah, that's, I will say that's a great thing about this quarantine is that you have seemingly endless, there's no more excuses to like, Oh, I ran out of time. How, how would you possibly run out of time? I've been getting so much yard work done and like house stuff. It's crazy.
00:10:29
Speaker
Yeah. What is, so have you, do you have like a long list of honeydew kind of lists? No, I wouldn't say it's like a long list we've had. There's always been stuff. I'm like, what could do this? I could do that. And then now it's just like, what else can I do? What else can I do? What can I do? Cause I just like, I'm someone who needs structure and like needs things to do.

Hypothetical Quarantine Houses: Best Companions

00:10:48
Speaker
I'm not good at just sitting and relaxing. Um, so I've been mounted a TV. I've been doing yard work, planting bushes and stuff, just trying to find things to do.
00:10:58
Speaker
And so, cause how would you compare this? Cause this is not an off, it's not a regular off season. There's no, I'm not breaking any news with that, but how does this compare in terms of when you're going into an off season thinking like, okay, well I want to get X, Y and Z done that isn't related to my job. Like, is it totally different from that perspective or like, I don't know how you, like, what's your mindset going into this in terms of not soccer stuff?
00:11:27
Speaker
way different than like an off-season because I feel like in off-season you take, depending how far you go, you take a month off, you say whatever, I'm going to get away, not going to do any fitness and then start up a month before their start date, but start easy because you know you're going to ease into it when day one comes and you have a slow build up. This, I feel like it's going to be like, all right, we got to get going because we got a game to right when we get going. So you don't want to come back behind the eight ball because you're not going to have time to ease back into it. And, um,
00:11:58
Speaker
you know, so at the beginning, maybe your body feels like, Oh, I don't have training. This could be, it's, it goes into off season mode, but you just got to make sure you stay on top of it and get your work out. Like I'm trying to keep my workout scheduled same time every day. Um, that I would be going in to do stuff, just doing it at home or going out to a park or something. So if memory serves, you would set a return date for
00:12:21
Speaker
the end of March or beginning of April, somewhere around then. Yeah. Yeah. So you totally on pace for that. And like, like, where are you fitness wise? So that was like, everything was going well. I already had two weeks of full training and I was feeling good. I'm like, Oh, this is great. Oh, this was this Corona virus thing now. So, but on the bright side, it's been more time to let it heal and do its thing because
00:12:48
Speaker
I don't know the exact stat. I'm sure my physios will get mad if I make something up. I think it's like every month after eight months, you have a 20% less chance of re-entry. I probably messed that up somewhere, but I just had nine months the other day, so. Oh. Yeah, this is more and more time to kind of let it fully, fully. It's not like you can't return to play, but it's like, it's better.
00:13:15
Speaker
So are you able to do like, how much outside of the house, like how, what are you doing to get out of the house even? Are you just locked down at your, the Wilbrune compound? No, I like to get my workouts like away from the house. Like I'll find trails to run social distance, obviously six and a half feet away from me. And then I'll like, I go up, sometimes I try to find parks that have,
00:13:41
Speaker
Nets and stuff, just juggle or play good touches. You know, I'm not finding a bunch of people and be like, hey, let's go play. So it's more like just running, keeping your fitness up, doing sprints, just stuff you can do on your own. You're getting out of the house at least. Yes. I'm making sure that I get out of the house to do that on purpose. So I get to go.
00:14:01
Speaker
Yeah, I think that that's, I don't know. I don't know how you, Emily and Likert are doing this. I'm walking the dog twice a day and I feel like that's, I need, like get out of the house. Yeah. For no other reason. Yeah. Why do you think I go to the grocery store? It's my big, so cool thing. Do you wear gloves or a mask? I wear a mask, a very stylish mask that I made myself. I gotta look cute. Nice. Nice. I just thought.
00:14:29
Speaker
Do you mask up when you go to the store? I don't mask up. I have gloves that I wear. The exterminator that comes by quarterly left some gloves for me. Nice. When he left spider sprays, like, you have to wear these if you're going to spray.

Easter Traditions and Family Celebrations

00:14:47
Speaker
But this was like last year, so now I still, I found them and I'm like, ooh, I'm going to wear these. I go off to Lowe's and get stuff to do.
00:14:55
Speaker
Yeah, I usually I have some gloves that I wear. I recently came upon an end like an actual N95 mask that I like man those things. Those are uncomfortable. I'll tell you like I have a whole new respect for like medical professionals who have to like go through the whole day wearing those things because it's not it's not comfortable. Yeah, that's a shout out to medical people you guys have been great.
00:15:20
Speaker
angle. They don't supposedly work very well with beards though either too. Oh that could, I can see that because you know that my wife was actually she was asking me she's like you might want to shave. I just want to stay inside. Yeah for what like you're not going anywhere anytime soon. Right exactly. I literally haven't left the house since this started. So how are you guys shopping? Not even like going outside.
00:15:47
Speaker
Well, I've gone outside. Yeah. I walked the conference with that, but like, I haven't gone anywhere since, since we've been locked down. My wife's gone, has been the tribute to the grocery store a couple of times. How does that work? How does that work? She wants to. It's not me. Oh, okay. That's how it is. Like in my house, Caitlin likes to stay home. She's the homebody. I need to get out. So it's like, I'll go get the stuff. So is Caitlin, is Caitlin just at home all day?
00:16:16
Speaker
Uh, mostly the big, uh, the big thing of the day is like the four o'clock family walk. I think she looks forward to that. But we got, we got to make, uh, we're going to make a Turkey breast tonight or in celebration of Easter for dinner. So, you know, we're trying to figure out all these things to do. So are you guys, are you normally big is Easter usually a big day in the Bruin household? Uh, growing up, it was like,
00:16:44
Speaker
pretty big holidays. My parents are both like really a lot more religious than I am now. It's not like I'm not there. They were just like really good Catholics mass every Sunday and stuff like that. So I grew up like that. I'm staying with my wife's family, but for us it's more like, it's not like huge right now. We still need to get our, I think we're going to get our son baptized. We just don't know when yet. Yeah. So I won't say it's like a massive holiday for us, but it's a fun one. You guys do any, either of you do anything for, for, uh,
00:17:14
Speaker
Easter? We took Liam outside into the Easter egg hunt earlier today. He couldn't find any any eggs because he's not. You know, he needs to step his game up. He's only one in about a few months, so he needs to be finding those eggs already. He needs to come on. I think I hit him too hard. Pretty cute bunny ears I saw. Yeah, exactly. This was like the whole ordeal to, you know, get dressed up and take pictures. I was like, OK.
00:17:43
Speaker
That's the whole point of having a kid, right? Yeah, exactly. When the Instagram's for kids. Yeah, yeah. For showing off your kids. Yeah, of course. Nobody needs to know when they're not on Instagram. You just put them in the corner.
00:17:58
Speaker
I have to constantly remind myself every now and then, I'll take a picture that makes it look like we have this happy family, and things are going well, and I'll throw it on social media or whatever, and it's like, oh, this is what other people do, isn't it? They have just as much chaos in their life as I do. Yeah, it's total chaos, and every time I post anything, I'm like, Caitlin, can you send me a picture and post, because I never have any pictures, like good pictures on the phone.
00:18:23
Speaker
I don't like take many pictures on my phone unless it's like forced to send to somebody like question so yes my wife uh so my my
00:18:33
Speaker
My youngest

Social Media: Family Image vs. Reality

00:18:34
Speaker
daughter turned four yesterday. So we didn't have a, as you might've met, we didn't have a big party, but we still, like my wife made this cake that's from this kind of famous dessert place in New York called Milk Bar. And so we got to have their cookbook. And so she made this birthday cake from there and she took all these great pictures and I was like, oh, did you put these on Instagram or anything? And she's like,
00:19:01
Speaker
I don't know. And I was like, I'm posting these. I'll take credit for this. Of course. You should be like, look what I did. Exactly. Well, I totally thought you did. I know. I was like, eh. I allowed this to happen. Yeah, exactly. I let this happen. Right.
00:19:25
Speaker
And we had made, we made, she made bagels like last week and that was homemade bagels. I can definitely recommend that. Interesting. Never, never have one of them. Yeah. Well, we might, maybe we'll have to drop some off at your house next time. Hey, we're all bagel people. Yeah. Also I'll drive around town and drop them off to all you guys. There we go. Just leave it at the bottom of the driveway. Exactly.
00:19:51
Speaker
Exactly. So one of the things that I wanted to we have a this week's bit, if you will, this this shows bit is I wanted to pitch with all you see these quarantine houses that are all over the internet. Lots of different versions of it. This is, this is a will Bruin
00:20:11
Speaker
There we go. This is for Will Bruin. This is a quarantine house. I created six houses of five people that I think you will have some association with. Yes. Good, bad or otherwise. And they're going to be, they're all
00:20:30
Speaker
they're all led by one of your former coaches or not former, some of them are current coaches. So I'm going to go through this and I'm going to ask you to decide which house, maybe give us some pluses and minuses for each house to flesh this out. But the sixth houses are led by Dom Kinnear, who was of course your first and I think your longest coach at Houston.
00:20:56
Speaker
Brian Schmetzer, everyone knows. Wade Barrett, who was an assistant coach for most of your time in Houston, but then briefly was the head coach, right? Yeah, interim. Right. And then Owen Coyle, who was the... He was the interim for Owen Coyle. Right, right. He was the interim for... So that's the other one. And then Preckie, who obviously is the sounder's assistant right now. And then Todd Yaguely, who was apparently a bit of a
00:21:22
Speaker
Like their family is apparently an Indiana soccer legend. Yes. And so he was your coach since he's taken over. So, and he did not, he was not the one who recruited you to Indiana though, I guess. Right. Um, kind of, he was an assistant on the, on the staff, uh, coach Mike Freytag was the head coach my first year there. And then Todd, my second year, Todd went to be the head coach at Wisconsin.
00:21:50
Speaker
for a year and then came back my junior year and he was the head coach in. So I'm not saying it was meant to be like, hey, go get a year's experience and then come back, but it seemed that way.
00:22:04
Speaker
Well, it seems like it's worked out okay for him there. Yes. So anyway, those are the six coaches. So we'll go through this. We'll start with the Dom Keneer house. And here's who I got as your, as this house is filled with Bobby Boswell, Stephen Fry, Walker Zimmerman, who I'm sure you're a huge fan of, Gustav Svensson and Megan Rapinoe. Any broad perspective on this, on this house?
00:22:31
Speaker
I think that'd be a fun house. I think this was the one Dom was the head coach of. Yes, this is Dom's house. Dom would be like a father figure, but I like to have fun father figure of the house. Bobby, just the clown of the house. You stop also would fall into clown. Steph would probably be the reasonable head. Like, Hey, let's, if the house having too much fun, come on guys, we gotta make sure we're not stupid with this. Who else?
00:22:56
Speaker
And then you got Megan and Walker Zimmerman. And Walker, yeah. I'm sure Walker would be fun too. I've only talked to him time, seems like really, really good guy. And you know, from social media seems like he's interesting. So I'm sure that would be fun. And then Megan, I've never really, never talked to her, so.
00:23:14
Speaker
You just see everybody knows her. So I'm sure she brings some status to our house. All right. All right. So this is this is Schmetz's house. You got Eddie Robinson, former defender teammate of yours, but he's now I think also one of the commentators for the Dynamo.

Quarantine House Personalities and Dynamics

00:23:30
Speaker
You got Tally Hall, another former Dynamo teammate, Gig Harbor boy.
00:23:35
Speaker
Uh, you got Kalen Carr, another former, uh, I guess he was maybe even a strike partner of yours for a while. Yeah. Isn't he? Or one of the MLS cups and we got in the, in LA, he scored and then towards a scale. And then you got Harry ship and hope solo. Okay. So let's start Eddie's like Schmetz is the, Schmetz is the coach. Okay. So that's, that would be, you know, he'd be another father figure coach there or a head of the house, head of the household. I'm sure he'd be more.
00:24:04
Speaker
you know, let, let the house kind of do what it needs to do, give good direction and you know, kind of take care of themselves. And then the next person you said was Eddie, Eddie, Eddie would be the crazy man of the house. He'd be kegs sanding everywhere. And then go down. Who's the next one? You got tally Hall. Go ahead. Oh, a police officer. Orlando, I believe.
00:24:32
Speaker
So I'm sure he would make sure that Eddie wouldn't get too crazy. K.M. Card, a scoofy, laid-back guy. Love him. Bring some good fun to the house. Harry could be your, like, house chef. I'm actually feeling like that's a pretty well-rounded house. Harry, yeah. Harry would do a lot. Harry would get the finances in order. Harry would cook for people. He would just make sure that everything's taken care of on the side.
00:24:57
Speaker
but also have fun. And then the last one. I hope so. I don't know if you know, but I just figured she'd be a good one to throw in the mix. I've heard stories, so I'm sure there would be something going on.
00:25:10
Speaker
All right, all right. So this next one is housed by Wade Barrett, who was a seemingly a very popular personality, was briefly the coach of the Dynamo and had been an assistant, I think, for the whole time you had been at Houston before that, right? Yeah, yeah. And he was a former player. Yes. And then you got Jeff Cameron.
00:25:31
Speaker
Brad Davis and Demarcus Beasley, all of who are former Dynamo teammates. And then you got Justin Dylan and Bev Yanez. Bev Yanez, of course, a very popular rain player. Again, I don't know if you know if you've met her or not, but people seem to love Bev. So, Wade, I feel like this house is all pretty similar mentalities and characteristics of
00:25:56
Speaker
you know, pretty serious, not too, too goofy. Nobody that's not really, everybody's pretty straight and narrow in this house. Aside from Justin, Justin would be the one that would be trying to get everybody lively, but it would be a pretty straight and narrow house, you know, serious. Let's go. Let's take care of our work. You know,
00:26:20
Speaker
That's what I got to say about that house. House is probably going to survive though. Yes. If there was like, if this was honestly like a survivor show so far that house would win. Okay.
00:26:31
Speaker
Justin would be carried by his bootstraps. This next one is the Owen Coyle House. Owen Coyle, who seemed to be universally loved. Oh, great guy. Yes, absolutely. Everywhere he's gone, success is followed. And then you got in this house Chad Marshall, Cam Weaver, a Kent native, former sounder.
00:26:54
Speaker
a long time teammate of yours with the Dynamo though. Jordan Morris, Ozzy Alonzo, and Becky Sauerbrunn, who I threw in there because she's a fellow St. Louis native, figured you needed to have some St. Louis representation. Yeah, exactly. You know, St. Louis, we all stick together. I've never really crossed paths with her too much, but, you know, St. Louis people just got to look out for each other. So we'll start at the top.
00:27:22
Speaker
This was the Owen Coyle House. You had Owen Coyle, Chad Marshall, Cam Weaver, Jordan Morris, Ozzie Alonzo, Becky Sauerbrunn. Okay, Owen. Yeah, Owen and Chad, I feel like would get along really well. Owen is, you know, great person, love the guy, big jokester, always joking around. And like you said, success always follows.

Drama in Preckie's Quarantine House

00:27:42
Speaker
Always. Always. And then everybody knows, Chad, you know what you're gonna get with Chad. That's why. So we're starting off strong here. Yeah.
00:27:49
Speaker
Cam also great guy, but he's now the silliness is kind of starting to dwindle down a little bit. I think he's building houses in Kent. I know. I think him and Jordan kind of they just are more laid back, more quiet than the first two and then Ozzy, the pit bull. So now we're revving it up more, but we're getting more serious. And then I'm not quite sure about how that he would be, you know, on a personal level, but
00:28:18
Speaker
This seems like it's a very broad spectrum house. How many times has he told you he won an MVP at 40 years old or something like that?
00:28:35
Speaker
That must be a thing he like wears a medal for right? Yeah, I mean that's pretty crazy. It is pretty crazy Brian Ching obviously a former sounder in the US all days but also a long time teammate of yours with the dynamo Adam Moffat who another former sounder also a teammate of yours at Houston knew who everyone knows knew who servando Carrasco Yeah, actually was traded from Adam Moffat and that's how he ended up in Houston and
00:29:04
Speaker
And then I figured it would be fun to throw in a spouse. So Alex Morgan and Cervando are gonna be in the same house. Yeah, this could be like, you know, this could be like the real world house, you know what I mean? The show on MTV where there's just like some drama going on. I mean, you throw a husband and wife in the mix and then you throw in two people that were traded for each other. You got Preckie. Preckie's probably just trying to egg it on, trying to stir the pot, get guys going.
00:29:33
Speaker
And she's about to have a baby. She's about to have a baby. That's right. I hadn't even considered that. Do you have a husband to play with, maybe? Exactly. Yes, that's true. That's very important. Moffat. Everybody loves Moffat. Married to Stephen Lenhart's sister, apparently. Yes, he is. And then New Who. I feel like New Who would just be dancing in the corner and doing juggling and stuff. This would be... Yeah, I'm not sure how this house would go.
00:30:04
Speaker
Well, Brian Ching, people seem to love Brian. Yeah, Ching, great guy. Like, I guess more, more soft-spoken, laid-back, you know, that Hawaiian vibe of everything's gonna be alright, guys, just chill. But intense in games and stuff, so the dynamics of it would be interesting to see it.
00:30:21
Speaker
So this house has a bit of an Indiana, it's more of your college life. Todd Yaguely, who we mentioned was your coach for a couple years at Indiana. Eric Alexander was a teammate of yours twice, I guess. Eric Zaviletta, apparently never a teammate of yours, I blew it on that one. But he was a former sounder and he went to Indiana, so I figured throw him in there. And then you got Brad Evans, Eric Freiburg, and Jessica Fishlock.
00:30:51
Speaker
This is a very Indiana heavy team, so I feel like there could be some divide in this house. You know, it could be a little clicky with the IU people. And then, you know, I'm not saying IU people are clicky, but I'm just saying that it could get clicky with people that have the same background all in one house. Brad would just try to stop that clickiness and bring everybody together. Freeberg, just a few feet high, you can get along with anybody. And then Jessica beat me in.
00:31:21
Speaker
in the family few things. I'm not sure how that how that would go along. Yeah, that would be another interesting house. All right, so I'll ask you a few questions, which is if you had to if you're forced, I'm going to force you to pick one of these houses to quarantine in which one are you going to pick? You know, it's tough. I think the own coil one would be fun. It would be a lot of fun. The further two that stick out to me are the own coil house and the dom canier house.
00:31:52
Speaker
They both would be fun, but they'd also have people that, you know, make sure you stay in line and don't get too crazy and get things done. My gut is telling me to go with the Dom Keneer house. Oh, okay. You know, probably just because of recent, like, teammates right now. Yeah. I mean, you got Steph and Gustav in there. That's gonna be... Exactly. I'm a little worried I over...
00:32:21
Speaker
I overdid it on that one. Yeah, maybe if one of them was in a different group, it would be a little different, but Gustav, Bobby, I think, would get along really well. There'd be a lot of laughs there. I'm sure Walker would get along with everybody, too. That would be a fun one. I think I'm going to go with the Donkner, Bobby, or Gustav, and Megan House.
00:32:44
Speaker
And I'm guessing, based on my recent conversation with Justin Dillon, it sounds like this may also be the house that has the best settlers of Catan games going on. Well, you know, Justin doesn't know where he's at half the time, so I can't say that he's the best person to ask about the settlers of Catan. Somebody that's always at the bottom looking up shouldn't be asked. Oh. Yeah, he insisted that he was above you in the settlers of Catan.

Entertainment and Rankings: Settlers of Catan and Netflix

00:33:09
Speaker
Let me guess, he was trying to, he was trying almost too hard to convince you that. I mean,
00:33:14
Speaker
Yeah, I mean, he, he, he sold it as he was third behind staff and Gustav and maybe in the area. It's Harry and Oh, Harry. Okay. Yeah, I think it goes. Harry Gustav me, Justin. Okay. Okay. Yeah, I guess. Based on it's like a formula of how long you played the game.
00:33:35
Speaker
how many wins you had in preseason, because clearly if you had more wins in preseason, you're better at the game. Yes. But that's just the way I think of it. You know, if you think you had, you should have won, but you didn't, then you're not technically better because you would have found ways to win. Right. You'd be Toronto FC. Exactly.
00:33:56
Speaker
So is, would that also be the best ping pong house? Which house would be the best ping pong playing? The best ping pong house? Yeah, Dom, that's a good ping pong house. Dom's a good ping pong. I'm not sure. A lot of people are not sure how they are. Okay. So I'd have to watch people recruit. That would be a whole different thing. So I can't really say right now. Okay, okay.
00:34:24
Speaker
Which house do you think you're gonna end up with the best the best Netflix like that you guys will be able to figure out what you want to watch to get like you can agree on what you're gonna watch on TV the easiest Oh, well funny. Sorry about the own coil house with Netflix
00:34:41
Speaker
This was just, like, something that kind of stuck with me that's really funny. I mean, you probably wouldn't be happy that I was saying it, but he's probably not listening. That's an easy-going guy, I would imagine. No, yes. It's great. Whatever you say. It was, like, the day before a game, and we were watching film, and the film was, like, really sh... It was really short, like, almost like one of the MLS clips, like, four-minute clips of the previous week's teams, and you just watch it. Like, all right, that's who we're playing next week, guys. Let's get ready for it. And then, like... Just fired up the highlights from us. During the warm-ups,
00:35:10
Speaker
We were jogging Owen. I was talking to Owen while we're jogging. He's like, oh my God, I can't remember what he said exactly. I watched this whole season last night of something on Netflix. I was just thinking in my head, you guys must have forgot to do film and just found this pre-meeting and said, let's just watch this four-minute clip. But I just thought that was so funny because he had such enthusiasm telling me about this.
00:35:34
Speaker
Yeah, maybe that's not the thing you want to brag to one of your players about doing the night before a game. I just thought he's just such a good guy that he didn't think anything of it. Oh, just such a... Yeah, absolutely. Which house would be the best doghouse? The best doghouse? Yeah. There you go. That's a good one. Like to raise a dog? Or just to hang out with all the dogs. Who would have the best dogs? Both of Steph's dogs. But Harry's got a dog, right?
00:36:04
Speaker
Yeah, Derby's good. Yeah, Derby. Jordan apparently has a puppy now, which is... Another one? Who? Oh, he didn't his... He just got a puppy. He just passed away. I think he had to replace his old dog, if I understand it.
00:36:25
Speaker
I'll probably go with Eddie Robinson. I bet you Eddie and Talley have pretty cool dogs. Kaitlyn Harry, I don't know if Kaitlyn has a car, probably not, or a dog, probably not. No idea if Opsel has a dog. Harry's got a cool one, so I'll go with that one. Okay. Did you say, was that Smetchers' house? Yeah, Smetchers' house. So do you know if Smetchers' dog is a tough dog or not? I'm sure it is. You know, it has to be. Otherwise, he wouldn't have it.
00:36:54
Speaker
Only tough dogs, only good dogs. Exactly. I feel like Schmetzer's house would be fun. You'd be like pouring the tequila because we're not in a season.
00:37:04
Speaker
but that's the thing we like we don't know if we are like this is the whole thing well it's a quarantine house right so there's no by definition are we going back to season two weeks one week two months i mean we don't know it's an indefinite you're stuck there indefinitely are we all retired are we living on island together no this is like right now it's like this is like you're in this now you would be have to move in today let's stick with my house okay
00:37:28
Speaker
Speaking of tequila, I ran into Brian at Costco, weirdly enough. Like the first weekend of, or the first week, the week after the quarantine happened. And you would be shocked to see if I were to tell you what was in his shopping cart. What I, what was in a shopping cart? Well, it was mostly wine and tequila. I didn't know it was as big of a tequila guy, but wine I knew.
00:37:56
Speaker
Yeah, I got the sense he was gearing up for a... He knew something. He did not expect to be going back to playing in a week. Exactly. He wanted to get it all now. Yeah. Or it was Sunday. It was Sunday. It also was Sunday. It was Sunday afternoon. What are you talking about? Yeah, exactly. I was also just, I don't know, I just found it very comforting to run into Schmetzer at the Soto Costco, which was so... There you go.
00:38:24
Speaker
Check it out there and wait for them there. Yeah. So how, so speaking of which, have you, what, what has been your, you're doing your own grocery shopping, I'm guessing at this point. We do. Yeah. And we try to get like the prime groceries dropped off if we can, but it's like impossible to get a, to get a whole segment. It's the whole thing. Uh, what, what is your experience at the grocery store? Has it been chaos? Has it been, this is tolerable.
00:38:53
Speaker
For me, it's been chaos. Oh yeah?
00:38:57
Speaker
there's just way more people than there should be. Like at all times, like I've gone, I try to go in like off hours too and there's still just so many people. I don't get it. Like there's more people, I feel like at the grocery now than if this wasn't going on. Oh, 100%. Yeah. And there's not as many off hours either because they, like I used to, my thing is like, I used to always go to like the local QFC at 10 at night or whatever, because there was no, now there's not an open.
00:39:26
Speaker
Crazy. It's mayhem.

Navigating Quarantine Grocery Shopping Chaos

00:39:30
Speaker
It's mayhem out there. These streets are crazy these days. These crazy grocery shopping streets. All right, did we have another bit, Emily? We did have one more bit, didn't we? Yeah. We were going to do another version of, these are traits that you would
00:39:53
Speaker
be willing to quarantine with, like, could you handle a quarantine person that had these traits? Okay. This is a family member, like a cousin, the show's up, and you find out that they do this thing. Are you letting them stay or kicking them out? I like this. Okay. So we- Last one, then I probably gotta run. Yeah, we- Absolutely. So, uh, all right. If the person is saying, mmm, good, after they're preparing a meal, can you handle that?
00:40:26
Speaker
I would, yeah, I don't think it bothers me that much. Okay. Unless it's like super obnoxious, like over the top. It was just like, good. I don't care if it's like, good. So what if they are, they're like obsessed with, with like perfecting TikTok dances, but they're not any good at them. They're gone. They're out immediately. They're kicked out and I'm telling everybody not to pick them up.
00:40:55
Speaker
So what if they are the kind of person that takes such a long shower that they're routinely emptying the hot water tank? They're out. You gotta, you know, you gotta be aware of your surroundings and make sure everybody got it freshen up hot water. You can't just take it all yourself. That's just selfish. Absolutely. They are the kind of person that decides they are going to take up bread baking, but they clearly don't have a knack for it.
00:41:24
Speaker
But are they like very intent on like, I'm going to do this or are they willing to like, they're like, they're just keep plowing forward. And they think they're good. Yeah. Like they want you to eat it. Like they, they, they put on the effort. They expect you to like, I can do them. Yeah. That doesn't. Uh, they always replace the toilet paper, but.
00:41:50
Speaker
I don't know if you are a strong under- Okay, so they're doing it the way you don't like. Okay. But they always replace it. I feel like I can deal with it. Yeah, I think I would say something.
00:42:09
Speaker
Which, which way do you prefer? We need to come over the top. Yes. Thank you. I feel like Jeremiah is the under. I am not someone who particularly cares, but if I were to think about it, I suppose I would prefer over, but I don't, it's definitely not a thing that like bothers me. Yeah. You're in it. Yeah.
00:42:40
Speaker
They leave the subtitles on Netflix, which I feel personally, I always watch it with the subtitles. Oh my god, I hate the subtitles.
00:42:50
Speaker
God, I'm kicking you out of my house, Jeremy. You're gone. You like the toilet paper under? I know. This is awful. Like subtitles even when it's in English? Yeah, because we, well, the thing is we watch, we, my wife doesn't like to have the volume very high because we don't want to wake up the kids. And so we watch the subtitles as like practice now. But
00:43:15
Speaker
Like, I get it. Like, it's fine if you're watching, you know, a foreign language film or something, and you obviously need it, but if you're... No, I just... And you're watching it, and you still have the subtitles on, it's like... Alright, once you... I'm telling you, I used to be anti-subtitles, but once you get into it, I'm like, no! Next thing you're gonna talk me into, under roll toilet paper. That's how it starts. It's how it starts. Exactly.
00:43:40
Speaker
All right, what about someone that insists on watching Frasier, but started like episode one and doing the whole, I never got into Frasier. I don't care. Yeah.
00:43:57
Speaker
All right. Well, that's that's that's that's our we had a couple advice questions, but I don't want to. Let's do the Okay, we got we do have a couple of advice questions. This one is from Peter Simmons. He says my three months. This can't be three year old. He must mean son keeps confusing the space needle in the crest. The sound of stress with the PA patrol lookout. When she explained to him that it's actually
00:44:27
Speaker
that I don't actually like Paw Patrol. I don't know if you have to, you probably haven't had to deal with this yet. Not yet, we're on the baby shark face right now. Haven't got to Paw Patrol yet, but I think you just let them go with it, you know? Yeah. I've long thought about the Space Needle Paw Patrol thing too much, and I've always thought that Paw Patrol, that was supposed to look like Space Needle, I don't know if it is. Yeah, I'd have to go check it out. I'm not that stagey yet, but when I get there, I'll let you go. A lot of things to look forward to. Yeah, exactly.
00:44:56
Speaker
So this one's from Dave Clark, this one, and then we'll let you get out of here. After we've played 17 rounds of Catan, what should our next board game be? What's the, yeah, so like, what's the... Okay. Where do you go from Catan? That's tough. Catan's a fun one, but for me, it's like you gotta have four, and during quarantine times, it's hard to have, unless it's like your family all playing, but it's very...
00:45:24
Speaker
Thinking it involves game, but I've always been a fan of sorry We're bringing it down in much a little bit. Sorry or guess who's a good one Or we've been getting into puzzles. You can't do puzzle. So are you in your are you in Caitlin? Are you board game folk? Not just us two per se game nights with other couples and whatnot not lately
00:45:52
Speaker
Basically I just play guitar on the road because Harry brings it so during downtime we'll play but we did a puzzle a little mermaid puzzle nice that was kind of consuming
00:46:08
Speaker
Yeah. Well, it's, you know, you got to find time consuming things. I know. There was a article in the Seattle times today that said that like puzzle companies are just like skyrocketing business and trying to keep up with the man and stuff. I could see that we have not done any puzzles in our house. We haven't even gotten to board. I got, my wife is not a board game person. So I always like, well, we'll play speed for car on cards. We played speed before. Um, so you get,
00:46:36
Speaker
five cards per person, just my wife and I. And then we make two piles of five and then all the rest just divvy up evenly. And you can only have five cards in your hand and then you have your pile after all the other five are set up. So you put one down, you flip the two middle pile. And then if it's like a five, if you have a four or a six, you can put it down and you just go up and down until all your cards and your piles out. So that's why it's called speed. Try to go fast.
00:47:06
Speaker
Yeah, it's a fun two-person game. Yeah, I was gonna say Jeremiah doesn't seem very impressed, so... Oh, hey, I'm willing to try it. When I expect he leaves a subtitle. Exactly. He likes his toilet paper rolled down. You guys are slandering me. He's slandering me. Yeah, I can't even explain this game to him. He's thinking about subtitles tonight. What are we gonna watch with subtitles?
00:47:31
Speaker
Yeah. Fraser from episode one, season one, episode one. All right. Well, that's what we got, Will. I, uh, hopefully this was better than doing nothing. No, it was good. Better than yard work. Walk time. Exactly. They came down and looked around the corner like, you guys coming? So.
00:47:53
Speaker
All right, well, uh, stay safe. Yeah, you guys all stay safe too. And stay sane. And hopefully one of these days we get to watch you play soccer again. That'll be fun just to go out and play soccer again. Right. I know how long this is we can maybe kick in another episode.
00:48:13
Speaker
Probably. Yeah, maybe we might. I have a feeling we might have time for that. Episode quarantine, episode part two. Exactly. We'll have to come up with some homework assignments. Yeah, we'll all try Emily's barbecue sauce. Oh, here we go. On top of the homemade bagels. Yeah, there we go. It's so good you can dip anything in it. There we go.
00:48:40
Speaker
This is my promise. If we do bagels again, I will all drive bagels out to all you guys. Perfect. You heard it here. You heard it here. Hopefully they'll be still hot. I can't promise that, but they were still good the next day. They're acceptable to toast the second day. Okay. Anyway, all right. Well, thanks for doing this. Yeah, no problem.
00:49:09
Speaker
Lickit, Emily, thank you for hanging out with us. Thanks, guys. Everybody stay sane. Yeah, absolutely. Too late. Yeah, exactly. I hope everyone's doing better than Bob. Yes. All right.
00:49:24
Speaker
Bye. Talk to you later. This is a bear with us. There we go. Yeah, well, it can always fix it. Yeah. All right. Anything? See ya.
