On this lesson of Shaping Your Pottery we talk about the importance of mastering your cylinder before taking things further.

Mastering Your Cylinder is Important Because:

1. Everything pretty much starts from a cylinder

2. Makes everything else easier

3. Helps when you are ready to start shaping your pottery

If you don't master the cylinder it will take so much longer to get good at throwing on the wheel

When I first started out with making pottery, the very first thing my teacher had us making

Speaker
was a cylinder we probably spent about a month on that we had to make a 10 inch cylinder and had to be pretty straight and this helped so much later on because we were able when we were able to start making bases bowls and other things we were we kind of already knew how to throw everything starts with the cylinder so you have to make sure that your cylinder is good now if you what happens if your cylinder doesn't come out how you want it well

you have really two options. One, scrap the clay, be gone with it, and then two, see if you can try to fix it, see what you are doing wrong.

Now,

Practical Tips for Cylinder Practice

00:01:23
Speaker
when you start making your cylinders, I recommend cutting your clay in half. Cutting your clay in half when you have a cylinder is gonna teach you so much. You're gonna be able to see how thick your bottom is if you're making it too thin or too thick. You're gonna be able to see if your cylinders are coming in even or not. It's gonna help you so much with your whole process

And so that's why you should be cutting your cylinders in half after each time.

Expert Advice on Cylinder Mastery

Speaker
I did an interview pretty recently and one of the tips that she gave was that she had to, she recommends beginners to just keep on making cylinders over and over and over and over and over again. And she is definitely correct.

Keep on making cylinders, keep on getting good at cylinders. Your drawing will be that much easier and you'll be so grateful for it.
