The War of 1812 and Modern Comparisons
00:00:00
Tristan Amundson
Miles, i want to take you back to 1812. I want to take you back to the war of 1812, a trade war with Great Britain.
00:00:12
Tristan Amundson
And I'm sad to report early in this conflict, the United States forces went up to then York, now modern day Toronto, and burned down some government buildings.
00:00:27
Tristan Amundson
I'm very sad to report to you that on August 24th, 1814, this this this hurts to say, I don't even want to say it.
00:00:38
Tristan Amundson
The British forces got through our line and they laid waste. They put to the torch, they burned down the president's mansion. We didn't call it the White House back then, but for all intents and purposes, they burnt down the White House.
00:00:53
Tristan Amundson
They burnt down the Capitol building. They burnt down the treasury, and if that wasn't enough, they added insult to injury and burned down the War Department.
00:01:05
Tristan Amundson
I mean, it doesn't get much worse than that if you're in war with somebody and your War Department gets burned down.
Seahawks' Dominance Over the Commanders
00:01:12
Tristan Amundson
I'm happy to report, though, that the good news in the story is Dolly Madison, while she was in that White House before it burned down, saw a picture of George Washington and said,
00:01:25
Tristan Amundson
You know what? They're not going to have George. We're bringing him with us. And she she got that that painting off the wall and took took George to safety. That painting still exists today. Thanks to Dolly's work. We appreciate you, Dolly.
00:01:40
Tristan Amundson
Um, last note on this. I just thought this is interesting. little tidbit reconstruction of the white house miles started in 1815 finished in 1817.
00:01:50
Tristan Amundson
I got to say that is some real efficiency when it comes to building. I'm assuming maybe there's a few less permits at the time. I thought of, this great fire in our nation's history, because that's what this game reminded me of miles.
00:02:07
Tristan Amundson
This was really a dumpster fire from start to finish. If you are a commander's fan and we really laid waste, we we put we put to the torch the commanders on ah on Sunday night.
00:02:22
Tristan Amundson
How you doing, my friend? How did you like that game?
00:02:24
M dub
Tristan, great to be with you. Great to talk. Another Seahawks victory, 6-2 on the year. Tristan, those sound like some very tough days in the history of Washington, D.C.
00:02:36
M dub
I bet the average Washington, D.C. citizen was just about as sad after this game, after the Seahawks stormed through the nation's capital on their way to 38-14 victory that was ah even more destructive than that tremendous score would indicate.
00:02:53
Tristan Amundson
Yeah, man, it was what a fun game for from our perspective, right? Just just to watch what an incredible game to watch. um You and I were texting while we were watching this game and and a theme of our texts really over the last few games have been, OK, you know, and eventually you got to stop playing with your food, right? we We we were specifically talking about you need to put a team away.
00:03:21
Tristan Amundson
And this game felt like we put them away. We stopped playing with our food. We put them away early. actually just listened before we started recording to Mike McDonald's press conference, and he specifically talked about that, how they they put a special emphasis after the Tampa Bay game about um finishing and and doing your job and and really putting teams away when you have a chance. and um And we've seen that a little bit, but I think we really saw it come together in this game ah where, you know, you can't say of this game and it's the worst thing you can say of your team, man, they played down to the level of their competition. And that was not the case in this game. They really played up. They played their game from start to finish.
00:04:06
Tristan Amundson
It was incredible, man. All three phases really kind of brought the heat.
00:04:11
M dub
It was incredible. The second half, the entire second half, I would say, of this game was only played because the teams were contractually obligated
Playoff Aspirations and Player Highlights
00:04:19
M dub
to do so. It was 31-7 at the time, and I feel like both teams would have been content just to leave it right there, but they did have to get out for the second half. I did think that second half, it had a lot of spare minutes in it, and it did give Chris Collinsworth on the broadcast A lot of time to really pump things up.
00:04:40
M dub
Tristan, we're very optimistic about this team. We were before the season when I gave the outrageous prediction that the team would win 11 games when Las Vegas said that they would win eight games.
00:04:51
M dub
And even still, the the level of enthusiasm, the level of expectation. that Chris Collinsworth was suddenly giving to this team was a little much even for me. okay It's a really good team. We're definitely really solidly there in the playoff mix, but there were a few things said that as excited I am about this squad as much as I admire the every phase of this game on a weekly basis, it was still it it was I could have pumped the brakes there. i would I would have pumped the brakes if Chris Collinsworth is right here on the World's Only Seahawks podcast.
00:05:24
Tristan Amundson
A little too hyperbolic for you. Yeah, no, I, I get it. And listen, I do think though there is a certain magic, a thing that's easy for us to take for granted is we're seeing JSN do this week in and week out.
00:05:37
Tristan Amundson
And I'm just going to use him as an example because, well, frankly, Chris wide receiver, he he's watching JSN closely. Um, But I think when you and and to make this not about the Seahawks, right, when when the Bengals have had years where Jamar Chase is just otherworldly, when when Dallas has a year where um where CeeDee Lamb is just, you know, doing CeeDee Lamb things over and over and over again, i think.
00:06:04
Tristan Amundson
From a national perspective, you actually notice it more because it you just see how spectacular it is. And i think the same thing is now probably happening with JSN. Now he's given us this incredible performance nine weeks in a row.
00:06:20
Tristan Amundson
And I think eventually now it's kind of good for us almost to be reminded from the national scene like this is not normal. What what what Jackson is doing is anything but normal. This is...
00:06:34
Tristan Amundson
top, top level. I mean, it's not even fair to say number one, what number one wide receiver ah territory. You have to call it much more than that, right? This is beyond elite play, always open, throw it up to him.
00:06:49
Tristan Amundson
He's going to come down with it. um And so I almost feel like that's what Chris was seeing almost. And I'm not saying this is the first time he's watched the Seahawks, but first time he's probably watched them this close and it just jumps off the screen. And I think especially if you're seeing it for the first time,
00:07:04
Tristan Amundson
JSN's play just must hit you in the face. I mean, it's really, really incredible, man. And again, just another game where JSN does everything right.
00:07:16
Tristan Amundson
um i don't know. I don't want to ah hog the JSN spotlight here. Anything you want to say and any takeaways from just watching Jackson this week?
00:07:26
M dub
Well, I was kind of thinking, I think a reason that it's maybe taken so long for him to come up into the national spotlight, comparatively speaking, just with the numbers, because and the numbers, the the pace for his season yardage has been basically in the same place the entire year, but it's it's been, ah even a few weeks ago, it seemed like a slow conversation, like, it is Jackson Smith and Jigba a number one wide receiver?
00:07:50
M dub
I kind of wonder if it's because his skill set as a wide receiver is just getting open. So there's not a lot of kind of highlight Odell Beckham grab catches. He's just wide open in the middle of the field for 16 yards, but just all the time.
00:08:06
Tristan Amundson
Yeah, no, 100%. you know, you saw that over and over again. um You're right. Just the separation that JSN seems to seems to be able to make.
00:08:18
Tristan Amundson
The obvious chemistry right now with Sam. um I'm thinking right now about actually one of the few incompletions of the game for Sam or or for JSN for that matter.
00:08:29
Tristan Amundson
The little pass where he threw, JSN was on the right side, going up the right side of the field.
00:08:34
Tristan Amundson
um It was an incomplete pass and it ended up hitting the shoulder of the cornerback and JSN wasn't able to make the adjustment But and the reason I bring it up, I guess, is because it was an obvious one on one.
00:08:47
Tristan Amundson
And basically, if there's ever a moment where there is an obvious one on one, it was just going to him immediately. And even that one, I mean, it was actually pretty well executed all around. And the the cornerback was in the right spot and made the play.
00:09:01
Tristan Amundson
But if there's a one on one opportunity, this guy is just getting it now. I think maybe to your point, because he's putting himself in position, his body, his body control, he's in position to make the play um consistently and doing the little things right. Maybe that's what JSN is all about. And it makes such a massive difference, kind of like watching a better version. And this is such high praise.
00:09:24
Tristan Amundson
It really is such high praise, a better version of Bobby Wagner. um and Tyler Lockett. I don't know if that's fair to say, but like none of none of these three guys are super huge dudes, but they all kind of had a body control.
00:09:39
Tristan Amundson
I'm going to know where I'm supposed to be and do a perfectly aspect to their game. And then JSN happens to be, like I mean, substantially more athletic, I think, than those two guys. But is that fair? i should we Or is there a better player that we should be comparing them to?
00:09:54
Tristan Amundson
Or should we just not compare them at all?
00:09:56
M dub
Well, Tristan, the record books would say that there actually really is no comparison for Jackson Smith and Jigba. In this game, eight catches for 129 yards and one touchdown. Add in the 11-yard rush at the start of the game. That does go down as a rushing attempt. It wasn't a pass.
00:10:14
M dub
Tristan, he does this all in just 34 total
Seahawks' Tactical Gameplay
00:10:18
M dub
snaps. He pretty much just played half of a game of football out there and still put up those numbers. ah We're so far into the season that really doesn't move his season average in receiving yards per game that much. It moves up from 117 to game on the year. But that does put him on pace for two thousand fourteen yards on the season quite easily in nfl record Knocking on wood over here. You know, that's an incredible pace, but started to look at it last week and another week where he just keeps up that incredible pace really with ease because like I said, he did 34 snaps. I mean, he wasn't, they weren't really going to throw the ball in the second half of this game, you know, and, and still, still just keeps on marching on.
00:11:05
Tristan Amundson
Yeah, no, dude, it was unreal. So let's you want to get into it a little bit. Maybe we start with just the beginning of this game, that first drive and and kind of what that looked like and and how that was a a harbinger of good things to come.
00:11:19
M dub
Absolutely. Tristan, at the end of the first quarter, the Seahawks are up 7-0, which is good. It's not a blowout territory, but I think you and I both felt like a blowout was on because even at 7-0, the Seahawks had...
00:11:35
M dub
just completely dominated the first quarter. Most of that first quarter, that it starts off with Washington receiving the opening kickoff. Seahawks get the ball three or four minutes later and go on just an absolute beauty of a drive. I think this was the type of drive we thought we would see a lot from the team in the preseason.
00:11:55
M dub
It's 90 yards. It's eight minutes. It ends in a touchdown. Also, along the way, three offensive penalties on the Seahawks for a total of 25 yards. So really, it's a 115-yard drive. And it seemed like it could have just kept on going on, kept on going on.
00:12:12
M dub
It was a combination of six running plays, eight passing plays, Both facets of the game were working. I think on those running plays, you really felt, you suddenly felt, oh, that this Washington defense, there's a softness, I mean, comparatively speaking, but you you could see that the the Seahawks offensive line but was going to be able to make space for the running plays inside and outside.
00:12:38
M dub
I feel sad for K-9 and Zach Charbonnet. I feel like they both played tremendous games, but if you if you kind of look at the play-by-play in the second half, the full game stats of this game are just completely destroyed because there were kind of 30 meaningless minutes played.
00:12:54
M dub
for For instance, Washington actually ended up with more time of possession across the entire game, but it which is just hilarious because in this first half, Seattle completely controls the ball.
00:13:00
Tristan Amundson
Incredible. Yep. yeah
00:13:05
M dub
Another stat from the full game that looks terrible Our K9 and Zach Charbonnet's rushing yards. I feel bad for them. They both played, I thought, really excellent games, contributed in the first half, and it was just an absolutely beautiful drive, and you felt like they could have done that every day like pretty much every time they had the ball if it was a remotely competitive situation on the scoreboard.
00:13:27
Tristan Amundson
Absolutely. Yeah, no. And listen, I'm i'm looking at the at the very first drive. You're the one who brought it up to me. i you know, I didn't really think about the significance of the first drive.
00:13:38
Tristan Amundson
And so I watched it. Excuse me. I watched it again today because I just wanted to absorb it a little bit and get my head around it. And you you just brought it up. But I think it's worth noting.
00:13:49
Tristan Amundson
And I don't I don't have the the stat of how often this doesn't work. But the idea that you have on this first drive is a chop block actually on Robbie Oots. Right. So that's a 15 yard penalty accepted.
00:14:03
Tristan Amundson
um Later on, you have a five yard penalty accepted. In fact, two plays later or a play later on Abe Lucas. The fact that right there, 20 yards going in the wrong direction.
00:14:15
Tristan Amundson
it those drives don't sustain, right? I mean, you you see this in the NFL. A single sack most of the time ruins a drive and it ends up being a punt.
00:14:27
Tristan Amundson
The fact that they were pushed backwards 15 yards, okay, need to keep going, then pushed backwards five yards as they're trying to make up for The 15 yards that they're already behind the sticks beyond what they were already trying.
00:14:40
Tristan Amundson
I believe it was 25 yards to go when they were backed up after the 15.
00:14:46
Tristan Amundson
I think they got 13 yards back and then they're backed up another five. And I think year round, 17 18 yards to go and you're watching this and watching it again, knowing this is going to result in a touchdown, it doesn't make any sense, man. You're not supposed to be able to score a touchdown when you're accepting 20 yards of penalties and you're going in the wrong direction that much.
00:15:09
Tristan Amundson
um And I think... yeah ah Maybe this is to your point. That's just kind of a microcosm of how dominant this game was, that you're able to make mistakes, self-inflicted wounds, and you still get a touchdown on that drive.
00:15:26
M dub
Absolutely. And even more than that, it was a great punt by Washington and their gunners were right on Torrey Horton and forced a fair catch at the 10 yard line. Even at that point, a 90 yard drive really doesn't work out that often in the NFL. It's pretty bad field position. So even from that starting point, it's an uphill battle and the Seahawks just cruised up that hill on a snowmobile.
00:15:50
Tristan Amundson
Really, really cool. Really, really great. um Okay. we We should talk about some of the players. um Do you want me to start with with Ty and and we can go into this interception?
00:16:01
Tristan Amundson
do you want to get started? how How do we dig into this next section here for us?
00:16:06
M dub
Well, there were three big plays. All the Seahawks superstars played incredibly in this game. You'd be really hard-pressed to find a player on this roster who played bad. But the three plays in the second quarter that turned this game from, hey, we're dominating the pace of play to this is a blowout, were really made by guys you would consider on the end of the roster.
00:16:29
M dub
And we mentioned it a few weeks ago that that kind of special teams mix on the Seahawks has a surprising amount of coton continuity to it. A lot of guys who've been with the team for three or four years, which does count for a long time in those types of positions.
00:16:44
M dub
And the there were the three biggest plays of the game were, yeah, made by these guys. And we get started off with an unbelievable interception by Tai Okada.
00:16:57
Tristan Amundson
It's one of the most... I mean, out how do you put words to this, Miles? yeah it It is... It's one of those interceptions you watch and you say, there's no way, right? Is that fair? Is that a fair way to to begin the description of the Tai Okada interception on the sidelines?
Tai Okada's Defensive Prowess
00:17:16
Tristan Amundson
There's no way he could have come down with this. He could not have gotten both feet down in time. Too much body momentum. it that he He was out of bounds, right? There's just no way. he it It did not work.
00:17:28
M dub
Absolutely. And even more than that, I'm just thinking it's incredible he he made a play on this because one of the biggest flaws of the Seahawks season so far has been the hands in the secondary.
00:17:40
M dub
That's not their primary job, but there have been three or four interceptions, clear interceptions that have been dropped so far. So to go and get this in a way that... a wide receiver would be really proud of just just to get come down with it in the first place was really remarkable for this play. And then you're right. The footwork is just impeccable.
00:17:59
M dub
It, it, it's one of those bizarre things of the NFL where watching it in real time, it doesn't look like he has it in bounds. And then as they slow it down and break it down and pixelate it up, it's suddenly abundantly clear that he completely had it in bounds. It it was totally wild.
00:18:15
Tristan Amundson
it It was great. It's worth mentioning. ah we had Devin on this giving some pressure, right? So this is a little of a extra blitz coming off. I believe that same side pressure off of the left, um, forcing, Jane Daniels to throw that ball probably a little sooner than he wanted, which is the beauty of football, right?
00:18:35
Tristan Amundson
Ty comes running from out of nowhere, jumps up at the sidelines, first foot down body going to the ground, And then you're looking, does that second foot go down right before that knee touches out of bounds?
00:18:51
Tristan Amundson
And to say it was pop is probably about exactly what the timing was. Foot knee. And suddenly, yeah, that foot is down right before that knee. And and we got a great um interception um from Ty.
00:19:07
Tristan Amundson
and You know what? I think it's just worth noting. We've been really excited um about the prospect of getting um love back into... um
00:19:18
Tristan Amundson
The starting lineup, right? Hey, we want the secondary hole. We want everybody back together. Let's get Julian back in here. He's not able to come back. In fact, they end up having to put him on injured reserve.
00:19:30
Tristan Amundson
And it's funny because when I thought that my first or when I heard that news, my first thought was. You know, that's not the end of the world. I want Julian back, but I want him healthy.
00:19:41
Tristan Amundson
Ty Okada has been pretty doggone good, and he's really ah holding down that position for the team. And of course, just right on schedule, right? he He makes one of the big plays of the game.
00:19:53
Tristan Amundson
And um really, I think in some ways can put all of our minds at ease a little bit. Hey, So Julian will be coming back. we We're better with Julian Love. Let's get him back in the mix.
00:20:06
Tristan Amundson
Heck, that that just gives even more flexibility for McDonald and what he wants to do with his defense.
00:20:12
Tristan Amundson
But until he gets back, I think we're in pretty good hands. So yeah, that that was the first one that stood out or the first of those three. Tai Okada's interception. What do we got next?
00:20:22
M dub
Well, first off, when this game started and we have the little player introductions on Sunday Night Football, I was really struck by it's Tai Okada, Montana State.
00:20:32
M dub
And that got me. There's a lot of time to look up stuff in the middle in the commercial breaks of this game. was like, whoa, Montana State, what what is this? So Montana State is an FCS school.
00:20:43
M dub
And looking at the career of Tai Okada, each of these plays in the second quarter, It's a career pinnacle moment for these guys. It's on Sunday Night of Football. It is on national TV.
00:20:54
M dub
And these guys have all gone on just an incredible winding road to get here. So Ty Okada, he was at Montana State for six years. So starts in 2017 with a redshirt year.
00:21:06
M dub
COVID, the 2020 year, completely knocked out their season as an FCS school. So that's how you get to six years. He wasn't even a regular starter on the team until 2021. He does sign with the Seahawks as an undrafted free agent back when Pete Carroll was the coach
Peely's Special Teams Impact
00:21:23
M dub
And now he's been in the Seahawks program for three years, finally getting regular starts here in the third season. And this comes after the last game against Houston. ah Mike McDonald sends him in on a blitz and he collects his first solo career sack. So first, first he did have a half sack early in the year, but...
00:21:43
M dub
A solo sack and a highlight reel interception in back-to-back games for Okada. I just, like I love that kind stuff.
00:21:51
Tristan Amundson
It's unbelievable. Yeah, no, it's it's great, man. It's a great story. And Ty's holding it down really well for us. It's it's fun to see him out there. And and he he feels like an asset to to me. when When you're watching the game, you're not thinking, OK, don't throw it on that side of the field. Or I hope Ty can you know rise to the occasion this time.
00:22:09
Tristan Amundson
he is He's out there doing it and there's no problem whatsoever.
00:22:14
M dub
Absolutely. The next big play comes another just monster special teams play on the season. It's it's happened a lot. Washington starts to return a kickoff and Brandon Peely comes in, knocks the fumble loose.
00:22:29
M dub
Tristan, I took a closer look at this one. So this was the first game. We've seen Mike Morris, the defensive lineman, also in on these kickoffs. And Mike also, he starts the game off with just a monster tackle on the on the very opening kick of the game.
00:22:42
Tristan Amundson
Yep. yep
00:22:42
M dub
Brandon Peely, they line him up next to Morris now in in the center of that kickoff formation for the first time in this game. And on this kickoff, it's not an accident because Peely comes down. He completely blows up the commander's tight end who's who's blocking in order to get to this ball and just immediately causes the fumble.
00:23:03
M dub
It was a perfect play and Well, I want to know what you think about it, but I'll let you know that Brandon Peely has one of the greatest biographies of any NFL player. So I want to get into that, because his road is even crazier. But what did you think about that play complete?
00:23:18
M dub
I mean, the blowout was kind of already on, but this really dumped gasoline on the fire.
00:23:24
Tristan Amundson
Yeah, I mean, I'll make my comments fast or I'll at least try to on this one. When you watch Peely do his thing on this play, I just what stood out to me in some ways, it was kind of funny. The slow motion, you can kind of just see his eyes. He has his eyes.
00:23:42
Tristan Amundson
He's his whole body is running as fast as he can or at least very fast down the field. Right. And then he's going to make the tackle. And he's kind of Superman and he's kind of flying and you just see his head is looking at that ball.
00:23:58
Tristan Amundson
And and the fact that he's able to, I guess, be so athletic that his body's moving in one direction and then he can just reach out kind of. I want to say the last minute, but reach out, not just try to make a tackle, but I'm just going to hit that ball.
00:24:14
Tristan Amundson
kind of noticed that that that ball was a little up, right? It wasn't tucked in like you were teaching us the other, you know, a couple of weeks ago. it was He kind of had that chicken chicken wing out there just a little bit. Not much, but just a little bit.
00:24:30
Tristan Amundson
I think he saw that and that massive mitt just increased. hit that ball. It was incredible to see, you but yeah, but I guess my takeaway is just the raw athleticism of Peely was, was on full display.
00:24:43
Tristan Amundson
And that's pretty cool to see when you see a a three 40 pounder with, with athleticism like that. It's, it's unique. You don't see it every day.
00:24:51
M dub
Yeah, I mean, I think teams around the league are โ this could be innovating kickoffs. I mean, this could be the most innovative play that happens that, like, changes NFL strategy this year because he he just completely โ he completely overwhelms the first blocker and then it's such an intentional punch of the football.
00:25:08
M dub
All right, so Tristan โ oh, sorry.
00:25:08
Tristan Amundson
um Hey, but before you go into that, just really quickly, just exactly what you were saying, listening to coach talk about this play. And he said that um they were all doing kind of their personnel meeting leading up to the game.
00:25:21
Tristan Amundson
And our special teams coach was sitting there and he's like, yeah, you know, um if, if you guys are doing this and this, then great. I'll have a Peely available for um kickoffs.
00:25:31
Tristan Amundson
And apparently Mike just looked at him. He's like, well,
00:25:34
Tristan Amundson
what what, what are you talking about? Was kind of shocked by the idea that Peely was going to be in the kickoff team. And obviously, you know, and he was praising his coaches about the innovation and what they're bringing to the table every day.
00:25:47
Tristan Amundson
um Brian Schottenheimer, I believe. um But it it was, it was just kind of funny to even hear the head coach kind of scratch his head, like, wait, Peely's going to be on the kickoff team 345 pounds. Okay. That's great.
00:26:01
M dub
Tristan, get this. Brandon Peely starts off life in Barrow, Alaska. Now, if you picture Anchorage, Alaska, Tristan, Barrow is 1,000 miles north of Anchorage, Alaska. So even for Alaska, Barrow is completely out there.
00:26:19
M dub
His family moves to Anchorage at some point in his childhood, and he starts playing high school football in Anchorage. He's not getting any Division I offers, so for his senior year, he moves by himself to my neck of the woods here in Portland, Oregon for a senior year of high school, hoping to get recruited.
00:26:36
M dub
It works. He gets a scholarship to USC. He also is at USC for six years, the COVID year, and he was also injured one year. And then undrafted, he spends two years with the Dolphins.
00:26:50
M dub
Tristan, about this time last year, the Dolphins came into Seattle and got completely blown out with a backup quarterback. He was in that game a few weeks later. He's cut by the Dolphins, but the Seahawks pick him up, and he's been in the program now for about 12 months. And what's really cool is his younger sister, Alyssa, is in the WNBA.
00:27:10
M dub
She was a draft pick last year and has two WNBA seasons. under her belt. ah It's just such a's such a cool... It's just so cool that somebody who was born in Barrow, Alaska can get to this point and kind get a highlight play on Sunday Night Football in Washington, D.C.
00:27:29
Tristan Amundson
ah It must just mean this guy really wants it. Right. I mean, that that is you just told me a story of determination. You just told me a story of a guy who said, no like this is what I'm going to do and I'm just going to keep working at it.
00:27:43
Tristan Amundson
um Yeah, that that is I mean, honestly, pretty inspirational, pretty cool.
00:27:49
M dub
I really, yeah yeah, I'm in this guy's corner for the, I mean, not that I wasn't, but it's just such an amazing story. And apparently there's like nine Peely children. So when he, when he moved to Portland, he, he had to move to Portland. It wasn't just like a whole family like type of thing. You know, he, he really had to blaze his own trail.
00:28:07
Tristan Amundson
Pretty cool. Pretty cool. And maybe just last thing on Brandon here, played 31% of the snaps. And so, you know, it's pretty cool.
Cody White's Breakthrough Performance
00:28:14
Tristan Amundson
Obviously, there is some some time at the end of this game that that helped with that a little bit, um but made an impact on special teams, made an impact um certainly um on the defensive line as well. So, yeah, great story all around.
00:28:29
M dub
Tristan, I think that leads us to the third monster play of the quarter, which Cody White, wide receiver, activated from the practice squad, has stumbling, bumbling, but truly magnificent 60-yard touchdown reception to ah effectively end the game. That made it a 28-0 score for the Seahawks.
00:28:50
M dub
This was a beautiful play. I do remember last year during one of the few games, Cody White was activated. He did have a 40-yard touchdown. reception kind of out of nowhere and here's yet another big play it is his first career touchdown in five years of the NFL and everything about this play his determination to stay upright it wasn't a clean sprint to the finish but stays upright stays in bounds gets the job done what did you think about this touchdown to Cody White
00:29:18
Tristan Amundson
Heavy personnel. Heavy, heavy personnel. So as I watch this, you know you watch the replay of it, you spend some time with it. He lines up.
00:29:29
Tristan Amundson
Right behind the tight end on the right side of the line. um And if you're looking at it, it's a play action. um We got K-9 in the backfield and it looks like our classic big boy personnel, right?
00:29:46
Tristan Amundson
Cody's going to get in there. He's going to put a a hat on a hat. We're going to move some folks. Um, and he just instantly jumps off that line, makes a nice little move, um, and gets himself open.
00:30:00
Tristan Amundson
And it my, my takeaway was this miles. When I watched this, if you ever needed one play to explain to somebody the power of play action and what it's all about and why it works and how it works in the NFL and in football in general,
00:30:15
Tristan Amundson
If you showed somebody this play and you kind of explained like, hey, most of the time when Cody's in he's blocking. And hey, this is a pretty tight, heavy formation. And, you know, most of the time when you see this, we're running the football.
00:30:29
Tristan Amundson
And obviously the defense agrees with me. Most of the time when we see this, we're running the football. And instead he just makes A great play on the sidelines. To your point, a little bit of a stumble there, but he has unbelievable speed, breaks it away, and was really, really happy to see um that awesome play action churn into a touchdown.
00:30:51
Tristan Amundson
And really, if it wasn't already a laugher, that was the moment where, you know, that that was insult to injury. This game's now officially beyond out of control.
00:31:02
Tristan Amundson
It's the Seahawks game, and it you know it wasn't going to be close after that.
00:31:06
M dub
that That is a great point about just how beautiful it was with play action. ah Really quick here. Cody White, a story just like these other two guys. He goes undrafted in 2020.
00:31:17
M dub
He's cut from three different training camps that year. He latches on with the Steelers for a couple years. Tristan, when he is cut from the Steelers, their director of pro scouting...
00:31:29
M dub
is his own father, Sheldon White, NFL veteran.
00:31:31
Tristan Amundson
Oh, well.
00:31:34
M dub
So talk about a business decision. Cody White lands with the Seahawks in 2023. So this is his third year in the program. This was just his sixth active game.
00:31:45
M dub
And like I said, first career touchdown. You'll love to see it.
00:31:49
Tristan Amundson
I mean, Cody White and you said Sheldon White, his dad.
00:31:53
Tristan Amundson
I mean, kicking ne nepotism right in the face. I mean, that you got to appreciate the fact that, hey, man, hey, son, you know, I love you. I'll see you at Christmas. But um you know what? This guy beat you out. So he's going to get he's going to get the spot.
00:32:07
Tristan Amundson
um Talk about high character. I mean, that's that is really, really cool. i yeah That's a great wrinkle to the story.
00:32:16
M dub
i It probably was not cool when it happened, but getting getting a 60-yard touchdown on Sunday Night Football, you know being in the Seahawks program for several years, that that certainly does help things along.
00:32:27
Tristan Amundson
It's really cool. can Can I give you my honorable mention now? um when You know, you talk through these three guys. can Can I give you one more just play that I love that I feel like we have to discuss? And and I just want to hear your thoughts on it as well.
00:32:41
M dub
Oh my goodness. Tristan plays a plenty in this game. we We are going to go this whole episode without talking about the unbelievable pressure percentages, the defense created on Washington, but yes, let's get to one more.
00:32:54
Tristan Amundson
there This is the the one that I couldn't live with myself if we didn't talk about Nicky
Manwari's Defensive Highlight
00:32:59
Tristan Amundson
Manwari. And it's crazy how when a guy is so good that it ends up becoming very easy to say his last name, even though at first when you read it, it's a little intimidating.
00:33:09
Tristan Amundson
And you think, hey, I'm calling him E-Man, you know, for the rest of the year. um But E-Man Worry with... I mean, there there's only one way to describe the tackle that Nick made in the it we we discovered it was the third quarter, correct? Third quarter, what about one minute, 20 seconds left.
00:33:27
Tristan Amundson
Nicky Manmory, there's a little screen pass over to Debo Samuel and Nick is getting um engaged. He is engaged with number 13 on the commanders.
00:33:39
Tristan Amundson
on ah the commanders And number 13 isn't a small man. He's 6'2". He's 230 pounds. And um you know what Nick did was he just went ahead and threw out that giant arm and put it around Debo Samuel and just decided to tackle him right there. And it doesn't make any sense. you There is no version of human reality where you should be able to be being blocked by a guy that size
00:34:10
Tristan Amundson
You're still engaged in the block. He never disengaged the block. And yet with one arm, he took down Debo Samuel. Miles, that that actually didn't happen, right? I didn't see that. that that I must have dreamed that.
00:34:24
M dub
and It really doesn't. ah We just watched it in excruciating detail right before we started recording. It still doesn't make sense, even after I've looked at it. I mean, that's the what that's the that's the coaching point of ah bad tackling, right? Is arm tackling.
00:34:39
M dub
And, you know, never mind one arm tackling. And somehow... It completely works here. it was one of the best plays of the entire season.
00:34:49
M dub
it did immediately jump out to me as it happened during the game.
00:34:52
Tristan Amundson
Thank you.
00:34:52
M dub
And I i honestly can't believe that E-Man was ready to make Just with you the human psychology. you know I can't believe he made that great of a play, that strong of a play, when this game was just already over and out of control and just completely done.
00:35:09
M dub
ah probably doesn't feel like that when you're on the field. I don't know. I don't know. It was was an incredible play, and I feel i feel kind of bad that that, I think except for us, this this might go to the dustbin of history a little bit because it was just such a low leverage moment.
00:35:24
Tristan Amundson
Well, yeah i can't imagine that it will go in the dustbin at Seahawks. um I was going to say training camp. that That certainly isn't true. At Seahawks practice this week, I'm sure the guys will be hooting and hollering about that because it it really was unbelievable.
00:35:38
Tristan Amundson
And you're right. There's so much we could talk about in this game. that The defensive line was dominant again. and our guy, Byron Murphy, with another half sack, constant pressure in the middle.
00:35:49
Tristan Amundson
Big Cat was just doing his normal superstar level insanity in the middle.
00:35:55
Tristan Amundson
um Jaron Reed involved in quite a few of the sacks in this game, which was really beautiful to watch. I believe he had two half sacks um that turned into turnedurned into one. I think that's correct.
00:36:07
Tristan Amundson
if If he didn't get credited for two half sacks, he should have. um And then, of course, D-Law out there doing his thing. That defensive line continues to be dominant. We could, to dude, we could have spent an episode just talking about the offensive line.
Offensive and Defensive Line Contributions
00:36:23
Tristan Amundson
They were dominant. They, you know, maybe we didn't run it the way we would love to in this game.
00:36:28
Tristan Amundson
um But man, the pass blocking was on point. You know, we're, we're seeing things now. Gray's able continues just to do his thing. um And then the secondary, I mean,
00:36:39
Tristan Amundson
If it any of these places we could just kind of sit down and talk about, um we obviously we can't, right? We can't talk about every single play in a game, um but those were the ones that stood out to us. um Thank you for giving me the E-Man time because I just, that's going to be, I think my favorite play of the year until somebody changes my mind.
00:36:59
Tristan Amundson
um But you just, you don't see that kind of strength and that kind of ability from somebody. and And by the way, this was our first game seeing him and Spoon on the field together.
00:37:10
Tristan Amundson
And I think that really delivered to didn't it? I mean, it was fun watching.
00:37:12
M dub
Oh my gosh, the very first one.
00:37:14
Tristan Amundson
it's incredible.
00:37:16
Tristan Amundson
Isn't that wasn't it great to see them interact together and just the juice they both brought?
00:37:19
M dub
didn't even think about that.
00:37:22
Tristan Amundson
Oh, it's great, man. Yeah, that was that was super, super, super fun. It was a great game. It was it was a great game. Nice blowout. um and Anything else on this game before we move on? i don't want to i don't want to take anything away because it was such a fun game to watch.
00:37:37
M dub
Yeah, really quick. We have been on JSN record watch. It is now officially time to start a Sam Darnold record watch because Tristan 9.6 yards per pass attempt is currently tied for eighth best of all time. I do have to say number one is the the top ones were set in the fifties where I think they just hucked it down the field quite a bit, you know, like seven times a game. So number one is out of reach, but could easily be a top 10 season for Darnold, especially because now, Tristan, even in the short hours since this game, there is yet a new Seahawk for Sam Darnold to throw the football to.
00:38:13
Tristan Amundson
Whoa, folks, if you didn't notice, that's what we call a transition in the podcast business. We don't call the radio business anymore. And that was beautiful.
Rashid Shahid's Acquisition
00:38:22
Tristan Amundson
You're right. Yeah. Rashid Shahid is the latest Seahawk.
00:38:28
Tristan Amundson
um You fantasy football players out there might know him. He's a great little wide receiver out of New Orleans.
00:38:36
Tristan Amundson
um We gave up a fourth and a fifth round pick for Rashid Shahid. yeah Miles, you got any thoughts on this guy? I got a couple. I've i've watched him off and on. i If I was to you know just give you my really quick kind of blink scout of this guy, it would be that he is a speed demon. He's really fast. he's He's wiry, kind of a smaller kind of wide receiver.
00:39:00
Tristan Amundson
um in fact, now as I'm saying this suddenly and being recorded, I should I feel like I should look up his height and weight and all that kind of stuff. But I i think of him as as really fast. I know that he's a a kick returner.
00:39:12
Tristan Amundson
I know that he actually has um a pro bowl as a kick returner, I believe, and all pro also as a kick returner. So that certainly could be one of the things they're thinking. um Any ah any thoughts on Mr. Shahid from your perspective?
00:39:27
M dub
Well, first of all, the fourth and fifth round pick, it does feel expensive. And I feel the same way that I felt when the team moved up to draft Eman Worry this spring. I felt this is an expensive price tag, but if Eman Worry is a great player, it's not too big of a price tag. It could still be worth it. And I feel that way right now.
00:39:47
M dub
That leaves the Seahawks with just four picks total in next spring's draft to give up those those fourth and fifth rounders. That's not a lot. At the same time, we could be saying, hey, this is absolutely worth it.
00:39:59
M dub
This gives a deep threat and a dimension to this team that... is even more explosive than it was before. My other big concern is Tristan. Shaheen wears number 22 as a wide receiver, which is definitely confusing if you're just dropping into a Saints game. And I will be very curious to see if he continues that with the Seahawks. It's just such a weird number. I really hope we see it.
00:40:22
Tristan Amundson
um you hope you see it. So you you support the weird number.
00:40:27
M dub
In this case, I do. Something about it feels just just right. ah Yeah, it's so wrong. It's right. There's something about it. It's it's it's a crazy idea. And then, you know, Shahidi Kamara, who's wearing 41, you're like, who's the running back? is the but you know What's going on here?
00:40:43
M dub
yeah He's wearing number 22, and he's a deep wide receiver. I would love to see that on the Seahawks.
00:40:49
Tristan Amundson
Um, so, so one thing just get, I guess, notes as far as how this affects us, right? So punt return, kick return. Okay. That's interesting. That could be an upgrade for us on special teams, which is exciting.
00:41:02
Tristan Amundson
um and then I think the other thing to think about, this has been the GSN show and, and it's not, that's not going to stop. This team is going to continue to utilize GSN as, um,
00:41:14
Tristan Amundson
ah as the crown jewel of this offense. I don't think there's any doubt about that.
00:41:18
Tristan Amundson
But if you consider, and I love Cooper Cup, we've we've spoken about Cooper, but he's probably he will probably have multiple games this year going forward where he has an injury, you know maybe a minor injury, maybe similar to what he's going through right now, a hamstring that he just needs to rest.
00:41:35
Tristan Amundson
Having a little more depth beyond, and again, listen, we named an episode after Torrey Horton. We love Torrey. He is a rookie. um Having a little bit of depth, a little bit of veteran depth with JSN, i think is very wise.
00:41:53
Tristan Amundson
um God forbid something happens to JSN. It's nice to have, you know, again, that that additional flexibility. And then let's not forget Clint Kubiak coached this guy last year to great success with um with the New Orleans Saints. So you have to imagine there's some great familiarity.
00:42:09
Tristan Amundson
um i agree with you. It's a lot to give up, but And this was our text message earlier today in John We Trust, right? the The guy has given us no reason not to trust his moves, specifically these trade deadline type moves.
00:42:23
Tristan Amundson
See Ernest Jones. um yeah We got to feel pretty good about it. I'm going to trust John and and move on.
00:42:32
M dub
Yeah, it's it's a great point to mention his his past work with Clint Kubiak. Shahid is at 48.9 yards per game for his career, and that moved up to 58.2 with Clint Kubiak.
00:42:44
M dub
I'm very aware that I said a very similar thing when the team signed Marquez Valdez-Scantling this spring, and that didn't work out. I guess it didn't stop the team from dipping back into that New Orleans Saints wide receiver room from 2024 yet again.
00:42:59
M dub
And here's hoping this one works out a lot better.
00:43:02
Tristan Amundson
Absolutely. Yeah. Well, and we mentioned this earlier, too, on our our little text stream back and forth. you I love the idea of we made a mistake. Let's correct it. Right. We're going to move on from this player and get the player we want.
00:43:16
Tristan Amundson
and And and hopefully that is exactly what they've done here. So. Yep, excited excited to to see him play and get incorporated in this offense. And who knows, maybe that helps with the running game as well. Maybe it it starts, he feels like a guy that could be used a lot around the line of scrimmage and that might start loosening things up in in other parts of the game.
00:43:37
M dub
Tristan, does that move us on to next week? The Seahawks, for their ninth game of the season, will be hosting the Arizona Cardinals.
Upcoming Game Against the Cardinals
00:43:45
M dub
Just like this last game against Washington, Seattle goes into this with an advantage with their rest days.
00:43:52
M dub
Arizona just got off Monday night football last night on the road. ah very convincing victory over the Dallas Cowboys. And the Cardinals definitely have a bit of a quarterback controversy on their hands in their respective starts this year. Jacoby Brissett is throwing nearly 100 yards per game more than Kyler Murray.
00:44:12
M dub
And so ah whether you'd like it or not, ah Jacoby Brissett will be the starter in this game. Tristan, this feels is very greedy for me to say, but I...
00:44:23
M dub
I would like for this to be a blowout, and I think that's possible. That will not be the case. but they you can't You can't say that in very many games heading into it, but it just it feels like I really hope we see a repeat of what we saw this week, and I really do think it's possible.
00:44:41
Tristan Amundson
Yeah, you know, it could be. I don't know what to make of that. I mean, we absolutely could see ah something similar. Certainly, Arizona isn't the most talented team in the NFL.
00:44:52
Tristan Amundson
That said, it is a divisional game. Those are always harder for whatever reason. um And Jacoby Broussett is a good, solid quarterback in this league. He's a good, I should say, a good, solid veteran backup quarterback in this league. So a lot of caveats there.
00:45:07
Tristan Amundson
But um listen, i i welcome the blowout. I i am a little cautious, um like I am always when it comes to divisional games. They're always a little harder, but you know what? We're on to the next. Let's go.
00:45:24
M dub
And by the way, the Seahawks could make an imprint on the the NFL record books this week. Jacoby Brissett has moved into the number one all-time quarterback in terms of best protection with interceptions. He has the lowest throws percentage for interception in NFL history.
00:45:43
M dub
If the Seahawks pick one or two off, he will go back down those record books. So here's hoping we get a chance to do that.
00:45:52
Tristan Amundson
Absolutely. Yeah. No, listen, let's go. Let's let's go for the record books. um And I can't remember. Do you happen to know? I hate it. I do this a lot to you. Oh, no. You said hosting. We are hosting the Cardinals. This is a home game.
00:46:06
M dub
yep and Yeah, because it it was in Arizona where it was a play with your food game that went down to the wire, even though the the Seahawks were controlling it early.
00:46:11
Tristan Amundson
That's right. That's right. Yep. Yep.
00:46:16
M dub
And here's how of that changes but at home.
00:46:18
Tristan Amundson
Well, and maybe this is a good way to to get some home wins cooking, which have been a little bit of a challenge, though. Okay, yeah, that well, that will be fun. And it'll be good just to get a good normal game again Lumen. at ah at luman
00:46:32
M dub
This is the 50th season of Seahawks football. Tristan, we have been honoring that with 50 seconds in Seahawks history to wrap up each episode. And my time starts now.
00:46:44
M dub
Tristan, there have been four Hall of Famers who played their entire career with the Seahawks. Safety Kenny Easley, offensive tackle Walter Jones, defensive tackle Cortez Kennedy, and wide receiver Steve Largent.
00:46:56
M dub
But a new tradition across all generations of the Seahawks got started in 1979, the fourth season of the team, when they traded for Carl Eller, who was one of the purple people eaters on the defensive line of the Vikings.
00:47:10
M dub
And that tradition is an old Hall of Famer playing their very last year in the NFL with the Seahawks. After Eller in chronological order, we have Franco Harris, Warren Moon, John Randall, Jerry Rice, Edgerin James, Devin Hester, and Dwight Freeney.
00:47:25
M dub
And in the next couple of years, Adrian Peterson should join them and Jason Peters could join them. Either way, Seattle, what a great place to retire.
00:47:37
Tristan Amundson
Great. You know, most people like to retire in Arizona. Speaking of right. Speaking of the Cardinals, not a lot of folks think about it, but, you know, it's a beautiful, beautiful vistas, um not quite retirement weather that most people um think of. But most people aren't NFL players with, you know, those athletic bodies. So maybe they don't mind the rain so much. They're just good to go.
00:48:00
Tristan Amundson
um that is a funny thing all of those big names um finishing it up uh with the hawks i didn't know that warren moon was among them one that that came back and finished up um his last year that's kind of a fun that's a fun tidbit
00:48:17
M dub
Well, the i I do not remember the Edron James one, just to be completely honest.
00:48:23
Tristan Amundson
i i i do remember it
00:48:23
M dub
And Devin Hester was playoffs only. i mean, some of those later ones were really quick cameos.
00:48:30
Tristan Amundson
Devin Hester. Yeah, that, that was, that was a fast one. Edge did not work out so well. I do remember that. um Yeah, that, that was you forgettable. How about that? You know, Edwin James probably should have retired where he started in Arizona.
00:48:43
Tristan Amundson
That, that, that would have been a ah better, a better choice. um No, I, I love it man. That's a, that's a good one. I, I like the, uh, I like thinking about those. it's It's just fun. These segments are fun because you get to hear names that you don't hear very often. And I guess that's the whole point of celebrating 50 years. I love it.
00:49:04
M dub
Here's to the next 50, Tristan. I mean, 100 seconds in Seahawks history is really going to bring some knowledge when we get there.
00:49:06
Tristan Amundson
Absolutely.
00:49:13
Tristan Amundson
I can't wait and we'll be doing it. um You know, as you mentioned those names, there's there's a phrase that all of those guys repeated over and over again. Do you know what that phrase is, Miles?
00:49:25
M dub
Oh, like a phrase, like when they when they joined the team, they and maybe got of tattooed somewhere on their person. It meant so much to them.
00:49:31
Tristan Amundson
but Most likely all of those players have this phrase tattooed on their body.
00:49:39
M dub
I couldn't begin to guess.
00:49:41
Tristan Amundson
Go Hawks.
