In this episode of Shaping Your Pottery, host Nic Torres talks about the importance of giving yourself permission to make the pottery you truly want. Highlighting an interview with Ron Philbeck, who embraced his unique style by allowing himself to create quirky, illustrated pottery, Nick encourages listeners to overcome limitations and explore new techniques. By sharing his own journey from wheel throwing to incorporating sculpting into his work, Nick illustrates how experimenting and not confining oneself to the expectations of others can lead to finding one's own pottery voice. He concludes with an invitation to access 53 pottery themes for inspiration on his website, shapingyourpottery.com.

Introduction and Mission

Give yourself permission to make the pottery that you want. What is up, shaping nation? This is Nick Torres here, and for those that don't know me, it's my mission to help potters like yourself to cover your own unique voice with your pottery.

Finding Your Unique Voice

Speaker
You did very recently, I got to interview Ron Philbet. And one of the things Ron was talking about, and one of the things that helped him really find his voice and grow his own pottery,

Speaker
was simply giving himself permission to make the potter that he wanted to make. You see for years Ron felt like he had to be this serious potter where he had to make things kind of like how other people would make them and if he would go the other route of making some quirky funny pottery then nobody would like it and he just couldn't give himself permission to do that stuff. But after a while Ron was still experimenting and trying to find his own voice.

Speaker
And so Ron decided to give himself permission to make some quirky pottery, quirky illustrated pottery that he makes.

Journey to Passion and Creativity

Speaker
And when he gave himself that permission, he was able to free himself from this limited limitation that he put on himself. You see, once Ron gave himself permission, that's when his pottery voice truly started to show up.

And you may be in the same boat right now. We all kind of go through these stages where we think we have to be a certain type of potter, but in reality, we might not want to be that potter. Take, I'll give you an example of myself. See, for the longest time, I thought that I only had to be a wheel thrower. I thought that wheel throwing, because I spent so much time and it was so much harder to learn, I thought that I had to continue going down that path.
00:01:45
Speaker
But it wasn't until later and after interviewing a bunch of different potters and how they would switch up their own style simply by changing techniques, was that I learned that I should be doing the

same. I started sculpting and I learned that I love sculpting, but I still like wheel throwing, so I add those elements into my sculptures and I combine the two together.

Speaker
And but the moment I stopped limiting myself and I gave myself permission to try new things, to try other things, that's when my potteries truly started to grow. It completely changed like almost overnight when I did that, when I gave myself permission.
00:02:26
Speaker
So you have to give yourself permission to try these new things out. Try things out that you wanna do. And don't listen to other people what they think you should be making. The number one thing is to be making what excites you. Because if you don't make what excites you, then how are you ever gonna find your own voice? How are you even gonna find that one thing that you truly love to make? You have to give yourself permission to make the party that you wanna make.
