In this episode, Nic Torres delves into the significance of revisiting old ideas to enhance pottery skills and find one's unique voice. He cites an interview with Eva Funderburgh, who emphasized the benefits of repetition and returning to past ideas. Funderburgh shares an anecdote from her first show in Switzerland, where struggling for new ideas led her to create hanging sculptures, a pivotal moment in her sculptural journey. Revisiting these ideas not only helped refine her pottery but sparked new innovations. Nic encourages listeners to revisit their old pottery ideas to improve their skills and explore new ideas that can enrich their work.

When was the last time you tried to revisit an old idea for your pottery? What is up, shaping nation? This is Nick Torres here, and for those that don't know, I'm going to give my ambition out, partners like yourself, to cover your own unique voice with your pottery. So very recently, I got the great opportunity to interview Eva Funderberg, and it's coming out very soon, the episode, but one of the things that Eva mentioned was the power of repetition and the power of revisiting old ideas.

Eva Funderberg's Sculptural Breakthrough

Speaker
The way she explains it is that when she was in Switzerland, I believe, some country around that area, she had an opportunity to do her first in-person show pretty much at a high school. She was struggling to come up with new ideas

And she finally made an idea that was like hanging sculptures in the air. And she said that that moment is what sparked her whole sculptural journey.

Enhancing Skills Through Repetition

And she said she revisits those ideas because the more she revisits them, the better the pottery becomes.
00:01:09
Speaker
And what do I mean by that? And how can you do this as well? So revisiting ideas is a very good idea and it's all about repetition as well. So you may have had an idea, you maybe have done something in the past that you think, oh, that looks really great.
00:01:26
Speaker
And maybe you're probably like me and where you're like, I made this things now I want to do the next thing and I want to do the next thing after that. And what Eva does is very special. She will make the sculpture and then she will revisit that idea again.
00:01:45
Speaker
But why does she do that? She visits it to make better alterations to it. And because each time she makes it, she revisits it, she gets new ideas for it. And this repetition helps her build up the skills to making better sculpture, make coming up with better ideas simply by revisiting an idea. And sometimes she doesn't even use that revisited idea.

Discovering Unique Voices in Pottery

Revisiting idea, you already have the building box set up for you. Now, you could just make little alterations here and there to see what looks better. In your case, you could be making you could be throwing on the wheel and you could be making some graffiti style flowers. And maybe you've done this in the past. Now, what would happen if you revisit it now? Your skills have grown so much that if you revisit it now,
00:02:40
Speaker
from what you did in the past, you have new ideas that you can incorporate into your pottery. And by doing that repetition and revisiting those old ideas, your pottery is going to get better. And you'll be able to find your own voice simply by revisiting old ideas.
00:02:56
Speaker
because we all have these old ideas that we've already done them before. Now, if we go back, it's going to be, one, it's going to be easier because the building blocks are already there. Two, you can have new ideas to improve that part. So it's so important to revisit old ideas every once in a while. You don't have to do it all the time or you can do it all the time if you want.
00:03:19
Speaker
but revisiting old ideas can definitely help you grow your own pottery and your own voice.
