Speaker: We went into this game feeling like we all knew what was going to happen. ah But, you know, every game starts 0-0. And even in a game where you're the heavy underdog, you're playing on the road, you're playing against one of the best teams in Mexico, and the deck is stacked against you. You got a Pete Kingston, Snyder Brunel, double pivot, which God love a man, like...

Speaker: I think those both those two guys are genuinely both doing everything they can right now. But that's just a tough double pivot to have to run in this situation. you're You've got a mix and match lineup out there. You're injured to all hell. ah So the odds are stacked against you. But again, you know, i go into that and you go into the game like, yeah, this isn't, this isn't looking too good, but every game starts zero, zero. Let's see what can happen. And you know, the first task that you have to be able to accomplish as this heavy you of an underdog in this scenario, in this environment is you got to keep it zero, zero, as long as possible.

Speaker: You got to keep it. You got to keep it zero, zero, zero. as deep into the first half or as deep into the game, frankly, as you possibly can with the knowledge that you're going to be under pressure and that you're going to be yielding chances. So just stay solid at the back, calm it down and start to at the start, try and slow the game down.

Speaker: See how long you can keep it scoreless.

Speaker: So what did they do? Got absolutely bammed on two minutes into the game off one of the easiest set piece goals I've ever seen.

Speaker: And at that point, it's like, all right. I mean, the game's not over, but it's pretty much over. Because this team so......dirt of... lacking in chance creation right now, that even if they had scored, even if Osaze had scored...

Speaker: that very clean look that he missed, which was to my eye, I was only kind of half watching at times, but to my eye, that was the best chance. The only really good clean chance Seattle had of the game. Even if he makes that, that's the only clean chance you had at the game.

Speaker: And they were absolutely pummeling Seattle.

Speaker: Gotta keep it level for exactly a hundred sec or for at least a hundred seconds. Exactly. It's the first, first bar that you need to be able to clear.

Speaker: And they got banned on

Speaker: a minute into the game, two minutes into the game. And the unfortunate thing is that I think, I think we, you know, we've but kind of been talking about how ah the first, the Portland debacle, the five, one Portland debacle aside, the, ah the offense has been a bit of been a bigger problem than the defense for most of this losing streak with, you know, one notable exception,

Speaker: But then tonight it's like, you know, the defense gets scored on off a set piece two minutes into the game and whatever chance you did have of taking any sort of result in this game,

Speaker: it was probably chalked right there.

Speaker: ah From there, it was pretty much a

Speaker: I genuinely enjoyed watching Stephen Fry play tonight. You know, i I'm dead serious. I know that, uh, I know that they gave up three goals and he spilled one that led to a goal.

Speaker: But goddamn, man, I think that might have been the one of the greatest games of Stephen Fry's career. Like, I'm not even kidding. I'm not even kidding.

Speaker: I'm dead serious. I think that was one of the greatest games of his career. I think that was one of the single greatest games a goalkeeper has ever played. it It won't get remembered as such because this team's resources are as such.

Speaker: and they gave up three goals anyway. But I, I think that was one of the greatest single goalkeeping performances in the history of the sport. And I'm being somewhat facetious, but like some of these saves dude, like, uh, honestly, I think the best one was the, uh, the one on Alexis Vega in the first half. I have no idea how he saved that.

Speaker: Mach 10. like From one of the best players ah in CONCACAF, one of the most talented players in CONCACAF.

Speaker: That was unbelievable. And he he had like three or four that were pretty much just as good.

Speaker: Uh, he was announced as departing for the Edmonton Oilers, uh today i clocked that this guy was useless like two years ago ah you know i realized that all of his ideas uh were either straight out of marketing for gummies like uh first match on us or a brand reef refresh that really wasn't necessary it was either that or things that pissed everybody off like uh ticket price hikes or dynamic pricing ah And it's now, on top of all the stuff that was sort of obvious, it's now being reported by your former colleagues ah that ah Hugh Webber was apparently the most hated man in the Sounders organization since Brian Mullen broke Steve Zaccowani's leg.

Speaker: Apparently, everybody hated this guy and cannot wait to unload on him. ah Yeah, isn't that? What are you? Yeah, that's crazy. That's crazy. Like how out there that was.

Speaker: Well, look, I'm not a journalist, so I don't know. Maybe there's some journalistic reason that you know that everybody hates this guy and you decide not to reveal that during the worst stretch in Sanders history since the NASL went bankrupt.

Speaker: ah I, you know, again, not a journalist. As far as I know, covering for Adrian Hanauer is not legitimate journalism, so... Again, I don't know why that's only just coming out now other than as an opportunity to scapegoat this guy. He's already getting blamed for the bad season ticket sales.

Speaker: ah So that's it's kind of weird. um But look, it is just a scapegoat. The problem here is Hanauer. This is a guy who had a lot of help to get to the top in MLS. Okay. This is a silver spoon fed trust fund baby who had Joe Ross money and his passion and his desire for trophies and his desire for stars. He had Drew Carey working on the ah the crowd experience.

Speaker: Brian Schmetzer, great coach. Garth Loggerway's mastery of the salary cap and the MLS rules. And um Chris Henderson doing the scouting. All those people are either, except for Brian, are either gone or marginalized. I don't know what Drew Carey's up to.

Speaker: And it's just Adrian running everything now. And he's screwing up left and right. He's hiring these people like Hugh Webber, who everybody hates. Craig Weibel, who everybody has realized is a giant problem.

Speaker: He's screaming at players at the Club World Cup. He's jacking up ticket prices. ah It's just a disaster. He's signing off on tons of bad signings.

Speaker: He's buying ah other teams and facilities with money he doesn't seem to have. ah it's it's It's over. i don't know why we're still talking about doing and ah selling the Allen stake and doing ah whatever the fancy term was for it, where they're trying to expand the shares or the capital raise or something.

Speaker: It's over. Just sell it. this is This is untenable at this point, and there's no light at the end of the tunnel. So thank you for letting me get that rant off my chest. No, I mean, cook, James. It is it was it was interesting to see like after that news came out today it was like almost universally. like Everyone was like, okay, screw that guy. And so you're like, okay, I mean, clearly there was like some open secrets kind of...

Speaker: anti-Hugh Weber sentiment. ah But ah you know then you look at... Noah actually wrote ah a little brief article today on our new website. Go subscribe to it, lobandscorchers.com. But it was kind of detailing how there was a Sportico report and Forbes numbers that came out that showed that you know the team's revenue has actually grown quite a lot under Hugh Weber. So from a business perspective, it's like...

Speaker: I mean, that is more what his job was. it's not He's not like a player acquisition guy. that's not what he That's not what he is. So regardless of how well he was liked, I think the idea that he would have anything to do with like, oh, like he's gone. Now the roster is going to get better. That's not really what he did.

Speaker: so no No. like Well, I mean, i would I would sort of, I don't question the revenue numbers, but I mean, how much of that was the the Apple TV deal, which isn't, that's not Hugh Webber. That's Lionel Messi. And then there's another 10 million from the, there's another 10 million from the club world cup, which was qualified for as far as I know, before he got here and certainly built with players that were here before he got there. So, so how much of that is kind of just coasting on, on either previous Sounders acquisitions or Lionel Messi himself.

Speaker: ah Plus, you know, a big, you know, the last God, maybe the last 67,000 seat attendance were ever going to get in the league's cup. So I, it It strikes me that he was actually that good at his job, ah people would not hate him this much and they would not be turning on him this much. I mean, as as long as you're successful, you can get away with being an asshole.

Speaker: so Well, that's what yeah i yeah that's what I was going to say about your Hanauer point. is it's like There's just so much stuff that when you're winning like you used to, that doesn't really people just dont it doesn't get to the forefront because you know you're winning. But now they're not, famously. so that's when it ah That's when it actually starts to go off the rails.

Speaker: I mean, he's just in way over his head. i mean, he's just taken on way too much. He's he's hiring people who are... yeah i i think Jeremiah Oshan reported that Hanauer is going to be covering Hugh Webber's duties. Well, if Hanauer was the guy who hired him in the first place and Webber sucked, why is Hanauer going to do a better job? And then he's stretching himself more thin.

Speaker: a minority investor in the crack, and don't know how active he is that, but he's obviously of the reigns. He's trying to build a stadium nobody wants.

Speaker: We've got all these MLS rules coming through. He's just stretched way too thin. there are ah There are theories that Hugh Webbs was like one of the biggest figures putting the whole stadium thing in Hanauer's head. i don't know ive i don't know if that's like fully the dynamic, but that's what that's what some people think. I'm not like reporting that, I want to say. i just that's what That's what some people think.

Speaker: ah You know, we're going to see. I have a feeling that Hugh Webber, now that he's gone, apparently somewhat acrimoniously, because this certainly seemed to come out of nowhere. ah You know, if if you know your animal farm, Hugh Webber is going to be the snowball. He's going to be the one taking all the blame for everything that goes wrong for a little while here.

Speaker: um But there's just a lot more than that. I mean, the business side, we're making more money. We're making less money. As a fan, it obviously doesn't matter to me. MLS is rarely a profitable investment. You make your money when you sell the franchise.

Speaker: So give me something entertaining to watch, not 402 shots. And i know you got more callers, so i'll ill I'll give you one more thing that really yeah ticked me off about Brian. Because I know, look, he's being let down by his owner and his GM.

Speaker: But, you know, you've got Mark Bronick, the top scorer for the Defiance, sitting on your bench. The game is gone. It doesn't matter at this point. Instead of the giving this guy a run out, you're throwing on more center backs.

Speaker: What the hell, dude? Like, just give him a chance. And if they put guys out there that they don't trust and it doesn't go well, then that looks but reflects poorly on them. So until they, until like another six is signed, i don't really know like what, what you do here because they they rolled out a double pivot tonight.

Speaker: of Swayne Brunel and Peter Kingston. Again, both those guys on their own, I like as players, and I think they are... um I can't fault them for how chaotic and disjointed the midfield is because that is not a... You need like bite, ground-covering, physicality, and dirty work. Ozzie Alonso, Jao Paulo, Christian Roldan type players. And if you don't... you if Snyder and Peter Kingston playing next to a player of that skillset would work them playing together. it just, it just does it. Like, I don't know what to say. like just does And that's a midfield that I might, I would probably be happy with three years from now.

Speaker: I think three years from now, those guys are going to be ballers today. If that's our starters, it's crazy, bro. I genuinely enjoyed watching him play tonight. Like I, did i that was the only thing that there's any like they're positive. There was anger and joy there. And I miss that.

Speaker: I mean, I think the young guys, like ah the young guys are getting experience that they'll be better for. I've been saying that about Snyder. He's, he's in hell. I feel, I feel so bad, like watching him play right now because he is, he's pressing first of all, which makes sense for a young player that is, ah that's in hell. But I swear sometimes like, like he's trying so hard to do the right thing. And then it it backfires. And then there are times where he actually does do the right thing and it's still backfires and you can just see him stare at the heavens. And he's like, what, how has my life led to this point? You're like Snyder brother, it'll be okay at some point, but it's just like, it is tough to watch, but it's stuff that he has to go through to get better, I think. And then, you know, uh, Stu Hawks is another guy, Peter Kingston. It's good to have those guys out there, but like when it's coming in results like this, I'm like, all right, is this even helping their development at this point? don't know.

Speaker: Yeah, if we had 10 experienced players plus that one isolated point, we could say this is a good learning process for them. yeah They are struggling it out, but the thing is we're expecting them to generate results because the vibe is bad.

Speaker: Yeah, or just generate something. I don't know. like That's that was the thing about this game is it's like this just feels like feels like one team just absolutely putting the other team under absolute siege for every minute of the game.

Speaker: And a big problem with this is Albert Rusnak is a player that doesn't, they don't lose possession, but they don't generate huge power.

Speaker: They don't generate a lot of like isolated moments of brilliance. They just keep the game going and they don't make the game bad for us right now. I checked his stats two weeks ago in the Philly game. He had 68 passes, five of which were forward passes.

Speaker: He completed about 98% of them, but he didn't really do anything. Yeah, that was a famously tough game. like he he keeps the ball, but the thing is when he's keeping the ball and putting it into players like Roldan and Vargas, we generate good chances.

Speaker: When he's putting it onto players like Kingston and Brunel, we are struggling to actually create anything because those two are not going to be producing nearly the volume of good chances and good movement that Roldan and Vargas do.

Speaker: Oh man, that take me back to that double pivot, man. Take me back. I'll take you back to Roldan and Joao Paulo if you want. oh Yeah. that's to what Marco Papa and Gonzalo Pineda?

I can say confidently that would begrudge him throwing just any lineup out there at this point. No one, no one at this point. See with what you got, see who who who Who wants it? Speaker: Because Jordan can go on the wing. De Rosario isn't doing the best right now. Danny honestly had a one-and-done season is what it's looking like, which sucks. We should have cashed on him, signed him for the contract, should have cashed on him. He could have gone for decent money. At this point, get someone – because Jesus Ferrer, when he gets into that 10 spot, normally he's pushing the ball forward.

Speaker: we've seen him look We've seen him look good there. There's no precedent. And that's the thing is, but there's no one there. Jordan can go on to the left. Rotheroff can go on to the right. Put somebody up there at the top who can get the ball, who will get in the spots to get the ball in the back of the net.

Speaker: Right now, I would much rather have ah new striker signing to give me some hope than anything else. See, yeah, feel that, and I know the fan base really wants the new number nine, and I understand it. I still think, like, stallion number six has got to be top of the... Shore up this midfield, man. Get your midfield general of the future when Christian moves on. Like, you got to get your JP, Ozzie, Alonzo, Christian heir apparent figured out, man, because just, like, throwing the kids at the double pivot like this, this is just cruel and unusual, man. They got it. This has got to stop. The biggest problem is Dotson came in as the backup and Dotson is nowhere near what we need.

Speaker: yeah And that's the issue is if we were going to get a backup for a roll down, it had to be someone who plays like him and Dotson does not play like him. so i thought he would like i My impression of him was that he kind of does. That's why I was like, okay, this signing makes sense, like, skill set-wise. But he's just... that Christian is such a hard skill set. It's it's levels. it'ss There's levels, yeah. yeah yeah it may be yeah Maybe you can do both. You can get someone to put the ball... You can go get a younger person without getting... it i feel like you can get one without getting a DP. The problem is there's more strikers available than there is that profile six who is going to be okay with...

Speaker: Sitting and waiting. That's the issue. If you get a six in that, then we're going to want to start right away. Well, then you can have... My thing is then you have the double pivot, the first choice double pivot as ah as the new six and Christian, and you take some pressure off Snyder, man. Speaker: There is no one on this team who any other team, and MLS or otherwise, has to actually think about. None. Which means the defense is not considered, or meaning that the opposing defense doesn't give a crap about who we put out there because we're like, we're just going man mark.

Speaker: words's good We'll be fine. And therefore, we're going to shut down the midfield because our defense has got everything handled behind us. So you either put somebody up there who's dangerous and is the quote-unquote best player on the field so that the defense, the coaching staff, whomever has to actually game plan against it, or, or as you just said, do we put someone in in the midfield as a six, as an Aussie?

Speaker: and look i mean, not for nothing. Jaupala was at best three quarters, maybe half of what Aussie was. somebody who can distribute to Misofsky to unlock what he was able to do last year to bring in an Osase, which by the way, ah i was not, I have not been happy with Osase since last year.

Speaker: And he had a he had like I thought he had a concerning game tonight. He did. And this is going to sound like I am not to be like, a yeah, but ah it's it's like, I'm deprecating somebody and I'm not, and I'm not deprecating him.

Speaker: I'm not even diminishing his capabilities. I am still Osaze investor because I think his stock has nothing but the ability to rise. But he played more like Dwayne De Rosario.

Speaker: And he is of a stature and a capability where he needs to play like Jose Alcador. And there's no one on the staff who is coaching him up to do exactly that. He's in there trying to finesse when he had that pass from Jesus, when he needs to be brute force and ball first time, put it in.

Speaker: like Make them think about it. Stop trying to overthink. try Stop trying to be the and-one basketball player. Get in there. Commit shots. Be the force. And he's not.

Speaker: And I don't know what's happened. he he It looked like he lost his man on that first goal in the box. But he could have taken the shot. And instead he dribbled toward the keeper who didn't have a half-foot shot. My point being is he needs to be one time.

Speaker: Immediate. He needs to be a force. Instead, he's trying to be finesse. He's not a finesse player. Yeah, he's a power guy. Yeah, he's a header. He's is somebody who doesn't want man mark.

Speaker: He's somebody who's going to take you on and beat you. And if it comes to his foot, he can do it if you're man marking him and he'll beat you. But he's not the end one. Like, I'm going to juke you.

Speaker: That's not his style, which is that that was his dad's style. And it's it's in all fairness. Maybe why he's leaning that way. That's not the player he is. That's not the physique he is.

Speaker: And he better watch out so that he doesn't become one dimensional like Jordan Morris, who is a speed over the top player and never developed one on one cut inside assist or otherwise make a defense. Think about anything other than this guy's going to slow down over time. We got no problems.

Speaker: Yeah, I will say ah just on the topic of the number nines in general, when you're getting run on so badly that the other team has 39 shots, 18 on target and puts up 3.6 XG. It doesn't matter who the number nine is. He's not going to have enough chances to finish that would make any difference. The fact that they only gave up three goals is a goddamn miracle. Like I should have been like a five or six goal game at absolute minimum. I'm not disagreeing with you, but when your defense doesn't have to make in consideration to where maybe even the midfielders have to think about it, where they think about who is threatening them, then everybody can man-mark all the way up the field.

Speaker: And we've lost any kind of center-mid possession, danger, whatever you want to call it, since CCL 2022, when in,

And then compare them against the salary and DP levels of those that, you know, perform in in that realm and say, let's say an average number 10 performs x and Y, 10 and 10, 10 goals, 10 assists a year.

Speaker: Well, let's compare that against any other number 10 that's in the league that's a DP. Well, maybe that's 15 goals and 15 assists or 15 goals and 12 assists. Well, how does he rank then?

Speaker: that's That's what i want to look at. And then, of course, things like times missed, injury, blah, blah, blah, you know, critical tackles, et cetera, et cetera. I just, I don't think it's there.

Speaker: And I definitely don't think it's go there in the future. um

Speaker: so yeah, I just, Hazus looked good in the middle. Yes, and distributions, and obviously Asase kind of like tripped it up. But long story short, I did not expect to win it on this game.

Speaker: But I got a question for you, Ari. Yeah. Like, what do you want to do right now? Would you care about League Cup or would you just want to go for the third star or let alone just make it to the playoffs as a miracle, like as 6 or 5, 50, to be honest with Yeah.

Speaker: I think you got a Chalk Leagues Cup because this result means you have pretty much zero chance of going through just the with the way the format is. If you take a result like this in your first game, it's pretty much impossible to advance. so gonna play You're still going to play other Mexican teams, let let alone we play Querétaro Sunday and then ah Next to that thing. The rest of this tournament, you got to play like the Mark Bronics of the world and do stuff like that. In my opinion, that's what I would do. And then it's like lick your wounds and see what you can make out of the league season. and yeah And MLS is a league where if you get into the playoffs, anything could happen. And theoretically, you think theoretically, they should get.

Speaker: They should get healthier to the point where they don't look like the literal worst team in the league. And then if you're not the literal worst team in the league, maybe you can actually do something in the playoffs. I don't know. seems unlikely, but I think that's what like the the thought process would be.

Speaker: But then also I know that I know we're in dark times and, but yeah, we just need all the fans to show up against Chivas and not let our stadium to get taken over by the red and white.

Speaker: It's just horrible to see. And as for the team as a whole, they look dead except for the the younger players that came in that want to earn their chance in the regular season. The the old guys look dead.

I mean, I just saw a team that was fundamentally overmatched and in a way that we like everyone knew that they were overmatched. So it was one of those games where you go into it like, how long can you hang on to your hats? How long can you hang on to the 0-0? Maybe poach one, see if you can make something happen. It's that type of game, which, you know, you're going to be in those situations sometimes. But then when they got absolutely bammed on two minutes into it's like, okay, well... then like what ag what are we... what this This doesn't matter. This doesn't matter. It's over because like even if you do somehow manage to miracle, scrape a goal out right now, you just gave up 39 shots and almost four expected goals. So yeah what's what's it matter if your striker who can't finish could finish? like You're only going to have the one chance. And they they have 40 shots. So it's just like... It's it's just it's it's like a predetermined outcome almost. like There's not...

Speaker: I don't know. There's not like any, anything to it other than that. I don't think the Sounders even had 40 shots in that 2021 playoff game against rail salt Lake that we got knocked out. And,

The one where we lost some penalties when Rouseau. That was the worst game I've ever seen. my God. MLS record for most shots in a single game is 43. Seattle almost was close to setting that. Oh my God. how many shots did Toluca have?

Speaker: Taluk had 39. That's insane. I mean, just be be allowing them. I don't care about the ones inside the box. Sometimes you can slip up, but you can't just allow them to have all of this space outside the box to just shoot from.

Speaker: They can punish you. Fry had to make like five saves that were actually very fucking good from shots that were 20 plus yards away. You can't give them space like that. 18 shots on target, tribe. shots on target, saves by Fry, three shots off the post.

Speaker: it's And by the way, some of the shots off the post were saved as well, though, onto the post. Okay, I don't know. i I don't know. I'm just assuming because I i see 18 on target and only 15 saves attributed to the goalkeeper.
