What is up, Shaping Nation? This is Nick Torres here. And on this episode of Shaping a Pottery, I'm going to be talking about why you need to be selfish about the pottery you are making in order to help you find your own unique voice, in order to be making pottery that you truly enjoy making. So I just had a really wonderful conversation with Sam Bregel. And during this conversation,

Learning and Evaluating Pottery Techniques

One of the things that Sam said that she did that helped her with finding her voice was that she was selfish in what she made. What do I mean by being selfish in what you are making? So you see,
00:01:19
Speaker
There's a bunch of things in pottery that we could be making. We could be doing wheel throwing, we could be doing hand building, we could trim our pots, we could not trim our pots, we glaze, we could not glaze. So there's a bunch of these things that we could do in pottery. And it's important to learn these things with your pottery because that's where your skills are going to develop and the more skills develop, the more your voice will show up.
00:01:44
Speaker
But I bet you there are some things right now that you are either currently doing or maybe done in the past that you just absolutely hate. You absolutely hate doing, maybe it's trimming. I know for me trimming is kind of one of those things that is off and on. Like sometimes I like trimming and then the other half of the year I don't like trimming. It's just one of those things where I either like it or I don't, but it just kind of fluctuates all the time. But just because
00:02:13
Speaker
you think something looks good or you don't necessarily like it, that doesn't mean you have to be doing that one thing. I know a lot of people that don't like glazing because glazing is kind of a pain in the ass. It takes so long and it could be hard to actually get good at glazing.
00:02:35
Speaker
So what can you do instead of glazing or trimming? Well, that is to be selfish and choose the things that you enjoy making and to figure out other ways to make your vision come to life. To give you an example, so let's say you are glazing your pottery, but typically you use some bright glazes that you think looks good and it makes your pottery literally pop.
00:03:00
Speaker
But the only problem is you don't necessarily like glazing,

Embracing Selfishness in Pottery

00:03:04
Speaker
right? Glazing is probably one of the biggest pain in the asses in all of pottery besides recycling clay. And if you don't like glazing because it takes so long and it's such a hard process to learn. But over the years you kept at it because, you know, it gives you the results that you have wanted.
00:03:23
Speaker
What if instead of glazing you use maybe underglazes? Underglazes are a lot easier to use, a lot easier to learn. Or maybe what if instead of glazing you stain your pots with something? And then the glaze that you end up using is a clear glaze or it's one singular glaze just to give it a little bit of that edge so you can actually use it.
00:03:46
Speaker
You don't have to glaze, you don't have to trim. Be selfish in the things that you wanna make. Again, it's important to learn these things because you never know when you might end up needing it down the road and it's also a good experience for you to see if you actually like it or not. It's good to learn those things, but it's also important to dissect what you like and what you don't like. Maybe write down a list of things that you like
00:04:13
Speaker
inside a pottery, you're gonna write down all these things. So I like wheel throwing, I like sculpting, I like, you know, underglaze, I like bright colors, I like round shapes, whatever it is, get a big list of all those things that you like. And the next thing that you can do is to write down on things that you don't like, you know, right? Like, I don't like trimming, but I do it because it makes my pottery look good. I don't like glazing because it makes my pottery look good.
00:04:36
Speaker
and write down all these things that you don't like in pottery and just write down that list. And then you're going to check mark the things that you think you can get rid of and you start coming up with new ideas for that. Because if you come up with new ideas and start doing it, then you can completely get rid of the thing that you don't like.

Sharing Your Unique Voice with Others

00:04:55
Speaker
So again, I'm going to tell you to be selfish in the things that you don't like making. And also selfishness is also making for yourself first.
00:05:05
Speaker
right because sometimes we are making pottery for other people to hopefully be able to sell our pottery or to for other people because that's what we think other people like but being if we are selfish first then what we are making will end up resonating with other people because we are enjoying what we're making and other people in turn will start embracing what you are making.
00:05:27
Speaker
So again, go out there and be selfish about your pottery. Don't listen to other people. If you don't like doing a certain thing, try to figure out a new way to do it and do something else instead to make your vision come to life.
