What is up my pottery shapers and welcome to Shaping Your Pottery with Nick Torres. A bowl is very important to learn because it will help you to learn how to shape and it will help you with your pooling as well.

Five Steps to Crafting a Bowl

In this lesson, I will teach you how to make a bowl in five steps. The first step that you want to do is you want to kind of reverse this roll a little bit. You don't want to be making a full cylinder. You only want to make about do about two full pools, maybe one.

at the earliest. One at the minimum, I would say three at the maximum. That's all you want to do for your cylinder. You don't want to get it to the full height that you want. The reason is because you're going to be flaring it out so it's going to get wider as you flare it out.

Techniques for Shaping the Bowl

So now the second step is you're going to put pressure on your inside hand while pulling the clay outward. You're not pulling straight up like a cylinder. You're pulling it outward or towards yourself.

This is gonna get that bowl shape. And you do this until you got the shape or you got the size of bowl that you want. The more pools that you do, the more shallow it's gonna be. The less pools you're gonna be, the more it's gonna have a V shape. And you just kinda have to decide whether you want it shallow or not, or deep. So now, the third step that you need to take to make a bowl is you're gonna use either your hands or your ribs.
00:01:53

to round the inside of the bowl. This is very important because you want it to get that actual shape like a bowl. If you have a really round rib, like if it's a circle or if it's a rib that is really curved, I would use that to help you shape just the inside of it because it's going to make it look a lot nicer and cleaner.

Tips for Bowl Durability

The fourth step is, while with a base, or a mug, or really pretty much anything, you usually leave the rim pretty thin. It's thinner, a lot thinner. With a bowl,
00:02:27
Speaker
You do kind of the opposite. You want to leave it thick because bowls are very, very, very, very easy to break. So you leave it thicker so that it is less likely to break. And step five is you're going to flare the rim. Flaring the rim
00:02:44
Speaker
not only gives it a nice shape but it helps when you are trying to drink anything out of it or just kind of really doing anything on it. Flaring the rim a little bit just gives it that much better of a bowl. So those were five steps to making a bowl.
