The Importance of Themes in Pottery

00:00:35
Speaker
What is up, Shaping Nation? This is Nick Torres here. And on this episode of Shaping Your Pottery, I'm going to be talking about creating a theme for your pottery, finding a theme for your pottery so that it is easier for you to have multiple styles so you can have multiple styles without feeling like you are just really making pottery and you can never find your own voice.
00:00:59
Speaker
Why is having a theme important?

Using Personal Life Events as Themes

00:01:02
Speaker
You see, I just had a really great conversation with Taylor Robadon. And in this interview, she mentioned that she has like her own like style, her own body of work, but she also has multiple bodies of work. But the reason why she's able to have multiple things and multiple ways of making her sculptures
00:01:25
Speaker
is because she has a theme
00:01:38
Speaker
maybe so she gave the example of when she was trying to have a kid. She was making a lot of rabbit sculptures because that was influenced that is having a rabbit is like basically having a kid like right is that like making that connection right there. And then she also went on to say that once she had her child her kid, that she started making a lot of
00:02:06
Speaker
bear sculptures because she felt that she was very protective. But that is her theme with her pottery. Her theme is her narrative, her narrative that is going on into her life. What theme can you choose for your pottery, for your sculptures, for your hand building, for your mugs, anything that you are making in pottery?
00:02:27
Speaker
What theme can you choose so you can have multiple different styles, multiple different ways of making pottery while still keeping the same theme and while still being able to have the ability to get your pottery noticed and to have people say, this is my pottery or this is that person's pottery. This is so and so's pottery. I know this pottery because it has that theme. What can you do to add a theme to your pottery?

Choosing a Pottery Theme: A Movie Genre Analogy

00:02:54
Speaker
So let's break it down a little bit. A theme is kind of like, let's say a movie, a genre in a movie. So in a movie, there are multiple genres that you can have. There was comedy, there was romantic comedy, there is action, there is animated films, whatever it is, you have a lot of genres within the movie like era.
00:03:21
Speaker
And if you choose one, then you could branch off into many other ones and have it your own movie, your own story going on because you chose that genre and that's what you want it to be. And it's the same thing with pottery. If you choose a theme for your pottery, then you're going to go a lot further. You're going to be able to branch off a lot. Let's dissect this a little bit more. How do you actually choose a theme for your pottery?

Exploring Glazing as a Pottery Theme

00:03:47
Speaker
Well,
00:03:49
Speaker
It basically comes down to what you like to make, what things interest you and what is your end goal. The thing that you like to make and things that interest you, it could be super simple. If you like to make glazes, like you know, glazes are your favorite thing, you like it when they come out and that is just your thing that you want to make in pottery.
00:04:13
Speaker
You can have multiple different areas within glazing while still keeping the theme of glazing. So let's say your theme is glazing and on one end of the spectrum you have glazes that drip. On another end of the spectrum you have glazes with polka dots or dots on them. On another end of the spectrum you have glazes that have lines in them. They have a lot of pattern to them maybe.
00:04:39
Speaker
Another other spectrum is that your glaze could just be one color. See, that is the power of having a theme for your product. You can have multiple different things while still being able to have your voice known because you chose a theme. Let's give you another example.

Animals as a Pottery Theme

00:04:54
Speaker
Let's say you like animals. Your themes are animals that you chose because that's what you like to make.
00:05:02
Speaker
And now, on one end of the spectrum, you can be carving animals. On another end of the spectrum, you could be making cyborg animals. On another end of the spectrum, you could be making sculpted animals onto your pottery that you're already making. On the other end of the spectrum, you can combine all three. See, that is the importance of having a theme for your pottery.
00:05:22
Speaker
If you can have a theme, if you could choose a theme for your pottery, then you're going to go a lot further and your voice, while still changing and still being able to have multiple styles, your voice is going to be your voice because you have a theme. Not because of what you are making, because of the theme that you are choosing. And that is what is going to push your pottery further by simply having a theme. And now let's take a look back at what is your end goal.
