Podcast Resumption & Technical Issues

00:00:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Daily Premier League podcast brought to you by the Global Sports Podcast Network. We are back. Yeah, it's been a very difficult few days, not going lie. We've been struggling with a bit of illness in the camp, perfectly expected to be this time, hear bit everybody's voices packed up, but but more importantly we've been struggling with actually getting podcasts out because trying to get to issues sorted with Cloudflare, which you probably read about, you're probably aware of.
00:00:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
And it's been very difficult to produce and publish podcasts because of the issues we've also had through Zencastle.

Premier League Table Shifts

00:00:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
There's nobody's to blame. It's one of those things that's happened. think it's all fixed now, which is good. And we're back. We're back at a game. But it feels like a long, long time, doesn't it? A long time since we were last year. It's only been a few days.
00:01:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
But Premier League table looks very, very different. And over the course the next 20
00:01:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
what's changed in the last week, what's been happening, and have a quick look at the games going at the weekend. Now, I said we're a bit croaky, everybody's a bit croaky. My name's Nick Britton, I am your host for today.
00:01:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
We are gonna start with what's happened in the last few days, because if you have a look at the Premier League table, okay, have a look at the Premier League table,
00:01:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
oh And you will see that Arsenal are no longer running away with Premier League. um come They are top still. They are 33 points on 15 games.
00:01:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
But only two points ahead of Manchester City, who are on a bit of a spurt at the moment. Haaland's not even scoring. Foden's back in game, people.
00:02:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
Foden is back in the game. Haaland haven't scored in his last three games. And bad news for anybody like me who has him captained in your fantasy league team.
00:02:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
I'm stopped there because I think he has. I'm thinking back. But he certainly didn't score. He didn't score the weekend. Anyway, Man City are on a charge. They are catching Arsenal. They've played the same number of games. And in third spot, Aston Villa.
00:02:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
who really are on a charge. Now i think back to what happened to Villa at the start of the season, first four or five games. Couldn't win a game, couldn't score a goal, were marooned in the bottom three. Now look at them after 15 games.
00:02:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
They've won the last five. They're on an absolute charge. Brilliant winner against Arsenal at the weekend, which we'll touch upon in a few minutes' time. Palace are back up to fourth. Their good season continues.
00:02:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
Chelsea in fifth. A bit up and down.
00:02:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
Sorry, you bit of a cough. bit up and down.
00:03:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
Last game was a draw. Previous game was defeat. Previous game was draw. And that the back of two good wins. So it looked like they were they were on the charge a little bit. Obviously they had gone up to second in the table.
00:03:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
And it looked like they going give Arsenal a good run for the money. They've just dropped off. So they're on 25 points, Arsenal are on 33, so a bit of a gap there emerging. Now, down at the bottom, oh dear, Wolverhampton Wanderers still marooned on two points. Nothing there has changed particularly in the last few days.
00:03:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
last couple of games they've lost, including last night against Manchester United 4-1. There was a bit of hope, but not for long. Burnley, on a similar run of form, they've lost their last five there in 19th with 10 points, Wolves are two, Burnley are 10.
00:03:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
West Ham dropping into the bottom three again. with 13 points and Forrest and Leeds then come with 15. Now Leeds are, they're making a little bit of a fight of it in the last couple of games.
00:03:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
Terrific draw against Liverpool at the weekend, which was on the back of an excellent 3-1 win at home to Chelsea. So two good home games in a bounce. You might have not expected them to get any points out of those. Home to Chelsea, home to Liverpool, they've ended up with four.
00:04:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
So we'll touch on that as well as we go along.

Mo Salah Controversy & Liverpool's Challenges

00:04:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
The big story, of course, in the Premier League at the moment is Mo Salah and Liverpool. most summer's outburst after the Liverpool game. Now, if you really want to dig deep into this and get under the skin of it, may I please suggest that you Google, well, no, not Google, or you can google it but go to spotify where you get your podcasts or Apple and search Daily Liverpool. So that's the Global Sports Podcast Network, Daily Liverpool podcast. They have been spitting feathers over all of this and they will no doubt, well they have no doubt, got everything to say. So they've been podcasting a lot on this. So I am unimpressed by Salah. I think his behaviour is really, really poor.
00:04:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
I don't understand quite why he is Quite clearly, bit like we saw with Nuno earlier on at Forest this season. He's hes trying to use the media to exit his way out of Liverpool, which is strange. has is just Is this just a question of throwing his toys out of the pram? what What's the motivation behind doing all of this? We don't really know.
00:05:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
But it seems a bit odd. He has quite rightly, and I'm very glad see him being booted out of the squad for the European game tonight in Milan, so Liverpool have flown over for that. And they've got a game against Brighton at the weekend.
00:05:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
I doubt he's going to feature in that, given everything that's happened. And then that's it. He's off to the African Cup of Nations. So he's off. And is this it? Is this the last we've seen Mo Salah at Liverpool?
00:05:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
I kind of feel it might be. kind of feel the next time we see him, he'll be in the Saudi Pro League because the transfer window would have opened by then. But equally, stranger things have happened. I hope it's not. i'm not going lie. I hope it's not because Mo Salah's been an amazing player for Liverpool.
00:05:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
He really has. He's been an amazing player for the English game and the English Premier League. And to end on a sound note like this is very, very, very sad. But no man is bigger than club. And ah thought what was particularly poor from him was trying to make out that just because he had played well in the past and he'd been a major player in Liverpool's success, as he undoubtedly has, that automatically earned him a right in the team.
00:06:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
So regardless of how he has been playing, regardless of how he has been training, he thinks he deserves that spot. Now, that's not football.
00:06:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
No player in the world deserves an automatic starting place in the team. So i don't know why he thinks he's different to Messi or Ronaldo or anybody else. You've got to work hard, you've got to perform. And he has done neither of those things. And anybody who has seen Liverpool in the last few months, since the start of the season, and indeed the back end of last season, he hasn't been performing, hasn't been scoring, he hasn't been creating. And I think what's particularly galling, if you are watching Liverpool this season, they're struggling defensively, they are struggling in the midfield.
00:07:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
And if you're not doing a job at a top end of the pitch, the very least you can do is go and help the rest of your teammates. So drop in, support your fullback, support your midfielders. But he's not really doing any of that either.
00:07:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
So there's nothing really to suggest that he deserves his place in the team. Slott dropped him, think he had to drop him.
00:07:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
and And this is the result. So in my opinion, Slott's done the right thing. In my opinion, Salah's done the wrong thing, but if you want more on this, go and have a look at the liverpool Daily Liverpool podcast brought to you by the Global Sports Podcast Network because they've got loads and loads and loads on this, as you might expect. Right, after the break, we're going to have a very quick look at what's going on at the top of the table and Arsenal particularly. Have they blown it?
00:08:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
Is this a little... don't know. One win in the last five games? Injuries catching up with him what's going on there? we'll catch up with that in just a moment.
00:08:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
There he is, my usual co-host, Mr. Ken Davis, who's on holiday the moment, sunning himself somewhere nice. And sounding rather well, either sexy or sleazy, I'll leave it up to you. You choose on that one. Right, Aston Villa 2, Arsenal 1.
00:09:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
Great win Villa, not great for Arsenal. It was a close game. You know, Arsenal I thought played well, Villa I thought played very well, and it looked like it was heading for what might have seemed like the right result in the end, which was a draw. And then in the last seconds, ooh, the last seconds, Buendia pops up with a goal. It was a bit of a scramble.
00:09:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
It was a bit desperate, bodies all over the place defending from Arsenal. Nice finish from Buendia. Nice

Arsenal & Aston Villa's Performance

00:09:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
finish. could have thrashed at it and ended up in Roseanne as it turned out. A well controlled finish into the back of the Nair at Villa 2, Arsenal 1. What's going on at Arsenal? Well, we know they've got injury problems and every week they seem to have more injury problems. and In an ideal world, perhaps you wouldn't have Declan Rice on the weekend, but you know what?
00:09:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
Didn't we have a lot of choice? The back four looks a long way from first choice, Arsenal back four. Do need a little bit more? Eze seems to have flitting in and out of games a little bit more. I don't think Goy Koresh has quite hit the heights we were hoping to hit.
00:10:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
And is it just going off the boil for Arsenal? Two wins. I did say one win in the last five. That's wrong. Two wins in the last five. And what looked to be quite commanding lead at the top of the Premier League, so eight points or so, is now down to two points.
00:10:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
And Manchester City are very much hot on their heels. So is this Arteta... Struggling a bit? Is it injuries that are biting? I think that's probably the main reason, isn't it? We know that Arsenal have got an amazing squad. We know they're a fantastic team, but they really are struggling at the moment.
00:10:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
If you look at the team that played against Villa at the weekend, that back, well, that back
00:11:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
four, five, back five, well, back five is, I mean, Ray's in goal, that's looking at, but Califiori has been playing and left, but Timber being forced to move into centre-half. Incapi being forced move centre-half, no.
00:11:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
Gabriel, obviously, know he's out to the new year. No Saliba. He came into the team and then immediately picked up a knock. Ben White's playing it right back. He's certainly not first-choice right back.
00:11:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
And that's having an effect. No doubt about it, you know that's that's having an effect. Marina came into the team and started doing well, but maybe tailed off a little bit.
00:11:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
And look, they've still got amazing team. When you look at their bench against Villa Martinelli, Goikuresh, Madweke, Lewis Skelly all came on the pitch.
00:11:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
That's a very, very good sign. But it just feels that in the back line particularly,
00:12:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
injuries are biting. Injuries are biting. But nevertheless, it makes for a more exciting Premier League in terms of not nobody running away from it. Who's going to challenge? Well, Man City. Are Villa now serious challenges for the Premier League?
00:12:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
And what's gone on at Villa? Well, but let's... Let's just have a look at that. Look at what's gone in the last few games. Well, and look at where they, compared to where they were at the start season. saw it at the start of the season. couldn't score. They couldn't win a game.
00:12:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
Now, we had McGinn playing out of position a bit. Telemans wasn't playing was injured. We had Rodgers just off form completely. work Watkins off form.
00:12:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
Martinez.
00:12:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
In-out, in-out in terms of his move to Manchester United. did So he was distracted with all of that. Didn't really have a settled side. And some of the players who have come in and made a real difference now weren't at the start of the season. So I'm talking about, of course, Eni Bondia, who went on score. I'm thinking also about Daniel Marlen, who's come in and made a big impact in recent games. So suddenly Unai Emery has got options because Olly Watkins hasn't still hasn't really hit the ground running. it still hasn't really caught fire.
00:13:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
But whereas before, towards the start of the season, it was all about Watkins and if he didn't score, they weren't scoring. Now they're getting goals from elsewhere. Rodgers is suddenly hit form and playing yeah um right at the top of his game.
00:13:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
i think it's fair to say that Sancho's starting to make a bit more of an influence from the bench. Tielemans is back looking you know at his best and they've got a set of defence.
00:13:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
Martinez is now right right back on form. So, It was never a question I don't think, and Ken and I, who's my usual host of this, argued about this quite a lot. It was never a question in my mind that Villa weren't going to come good. They were always going to come good.
00:13:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
They were always going to come good. Ken wasn't sure. They have come good, so I can look at him with a good degree of smugglers, I think, in all of this. They have come good, and third on the table. So are Villa serious challenges for the league?
00:14:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
You decide. You decide. What do you think on that? Interested to hear your thoughts as always. Palace back up to fourth. They're having a good season again.
00:14:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
That's good to see, I think. And Chelsea, is as I said, just dipping down last couple of games. Well, none in three now. No win in three. That win against Leeds was a real surprise. And I think we see from Chelsea what we what we would always see, which is a young team. You're going to be up and down a little bit in terms of your form, in terms of your consistency.
00:14:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
Cole Palmer's come back into the team the last couple of games. Hasn't really had the impact that we want him to have, I don't think. But they'll be they'll be that all season. I think they'll be up and down all season.
00:14:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
um Everton, they were fifth for a little bit after a very, very impressive win at the weekend over Nottingham Forest. Down to seventh at the moment. They're pushing for Europe.

Competitive Premier League Standings

00:15:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
They're having a good season. That's good to see as well.
00:15:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
So the top of the table, it's tight. You know, Arsenal 31, Man City, sorry, Arsenal 33, Man City 31 are your top two. Villa on 30, so they're within a win of going top of the Premier League.
00:15:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
Then a little gap of four points to Palace. Now, Palace in fourth on 26, Brighton and Sunderland and Liverpool are all only three points behind.
00:15:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
And they're in eighth, ninth and tenth. So there's only three points separating. Tenth place, Liverpool, and fourth place, Crystal Palace. And in between that, you've got Chelsea, 25, Man United, 25, and Everton, 24. It's so tight.
00:15:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's so tight. Even down, I would say, to Newcastle in 12th. So under the fold, bottom half of the table, Newcastle in on 22 points, only three points away from a European place in the Europa League, i.e. fifth place.
00:16:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
This table is nuts It is crackers. OK. In a moment, we're going to focus on the bottom of the Premier League and what's going on down there and then have a very brief look because actually it's now Tuesday and we're going to start looking ahead to the weekend's pitches very, very soon.
00:17:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
And there we go. Right, bottom of the table, Wolves. 15 points. If only, i hear the Wolves fans say, 15 games played. Two points, no wins, 13 defeats, two draws. pathetic There was a little bit of hope last night when they drew level right at the end of the first half against Manchester United. it was a good goal, to be fair. was well taken.
00:17:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
And you think, right, going in at half time, is this it? Is this the bit that's going to change Wolves' season? Is this the bit that's going to give them a little bit of momentum? And second half they came out and were pretty rubbish. And Man United won 4-1 fairly easily.
00:17:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
There's nothing to say about Wolves that's positive, I'm afraid. They look poor. Player for player against any team, they look poor. Tactically, they look poor. They've got no fight in them. They seem to have any spirit in them. Rob Edwards has come in as manager and has done absolutely nothing to move the dial from Vitor Pereira.
00:18:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
They were losing all their games before he arrived and since Rob Edwards has taken over they've continued to lose all their games. not He hasn't picked up a single point yet. They are destined for the Championship. I don't see any way for Wolves to get out of this. The only thing, only interesting thing in about Wolves left is can they Can they beat Derby County's record of 11 points set in 2007, 2008, if I remember rightly?
00:18:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
I was there. was horrible. And are Wolves going to finish below that? Are they going to get fewer than 11 points? Southampton managed it almost this time last year.
00:18:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
They managed it and it looked like they were going to beat it and then put on a tiny little spurt and they won a game at the end of the season. which meant they finished on 12 points. But Wolves, you just wonder.
00:19:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
I mean, with Southampton, you thought, well, they've actually got decent players, but they were committing suicide at the back under Russell Martin, conceding so many goals. player trying to play out from the back, can't do it, goal.
00:19:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
So many goals. But Wolves just look poor everywhere. You just you wonder where they're going to get. games Games won. you know How are they going win games? you want how they're going to score goals you wonder how they're going to get heading games It just looks so poor.
00:19:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
Burnley, second bottom, they've lost their last five as well. They're looking equally bad. They've got busy period coming up. The problem with Burnley is if you are a promoted side, you need to get points on the table early on because the slog of the season soon catches up with you.
00:19:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
And we're just about to enter what is a very busy Christmas period. And they're down there, 10 points, three behind West Ham, five from safety.
00:19:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's not great. I don't fancy Burnley at all. I think, excuse me, I've got a frog in the throat. I think they're going to find themselves cut adrift if they're not very, very, very careful in a short space of time. you know Before the transfer window opens in January, are they actually going to have no but no more points?
00:20:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
Are they going to marooned? Are they going to start looking at it and going, right, let's prepare for next season. Back yet again, back in the championship. Yo-yo up, yo-yo down. It's pretty dull and that's where they're at. So nothing really to shout about for Burnley.
00:20:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
and then But then when you look at the teams above them, West Ham, Forest, Leeds are the three who are kind of in that bottom five of relegation, although Fulham are being sucked into it they're not careful.

West Ham & Leeds Show Resilience

00:20:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
They're all kind of showing signs of life. So West Ham have put on a bit of a spurt. since Nuno took over. You look at the last five games, three draws, a victory and a defeat. So they've only lost one in their last five and they picked up five points, six points rather. They picked up six points. That's not bad if you're in the relegation zone. That's not too bad actually.
00:21:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
They now need to start converting those wins, sorry, those draws into wins. But the first thing you've got to do when you're down at the bottom of the is make yourself hard to beat.
00:21:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
That's what you've got to do. Wolves can't do it. New manager coming at Wolves can't do it. Nuno's coming to West Ham and he's having that effect. He's making it a bit harder to beat. They've now got to start converting that into into goals, into wins.
00:21:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
And people like Pakitar not getting himself sent off, stupidly. Above them, Forrest had a bit of a spurt when Deitch took over, but very poor. Two defeats out of three. Very poor.
00:21:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
defeat at the weekend to Everton where they were just limp and a bit soulless and a bit lifeless. pretty pretty ah Pretty poor performance that was. And then as I said, Leeds who looked the like they were on the slide big time suddenly out of nowhere pulled on the back of three successive defeats, pulled a winner out of the bag against Chelsea three one and followed that up with a really good performance against Liverpool where they looked out of it at 2-0 down, clawed their way back to 2-2 Then went 3-2 down with Tenter Play. Good goal from Sobberslay. Nicely tucked away when was clean through.
00:22:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
And couldn of could have given up the goes. But carried on, carried on, carried on. And scored with virtually the last kick the game from a corner. Now, it's worth saying, actually, we're talking about Liverpool.
00:22:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
Anybody in the entire world surprised when that happened? Come on, admit it. Were you surprised? No, of course you weren't. And I felt for Arne Slott. I'm not going to lie. I felt for him because...
00:22:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
He stood on the touchline. There's nothing he can do. Leeds are pushing. Get a corner. Kind of cleared. Get another corner. Comes over.
00:22:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
Goalkeeper doesn't go for it. Defenders don't bother heading it. Leeds man at the back post. Unmarked. Bang. Goal. 3-3. And you could see Slott's face.
00:23:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
His shoulders sagged. His face dropped. I've got a feel for him because you know what? That's not on him. At all. You can criticise Slott for a few things this season.
00:23:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
Living in a goal in the last minute like that against Leeds is not on him. That is the players. They've got to take responsibility. Because that was poor. Anyway, a very good draw for Leeds.
00:23:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
And reason for them to be optimistic. Their home form, hopefully, is for them starting to pick up. Their away form is wretched. they've got ah They've got to improve. So that's what's going on at the back end of the sorry at the bottom, if you like.
00:23:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
of the table and we're going to finish the the podcast. It's disappeared from my screen but we're going to finish the podcast with a look at what's going on at the weekend because it's soon be time to preview all the Premier League

Upcoming Matches & Podcast Wrap-up

00:24:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
games this weekend. So we've got Chelsea versus Everton on Saturday, three o'clock, two three o'clock games on Saturday.
00:24:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
Chelsea versus Everton, Liverpool versus Brighton Will Salah be in, will Salah be out? think we know the answer that, but the slot could spring a surprise. Then the 5.30 game, Burnley v Fulham. And 8 o'clock, Arsenal v Wolves. Is this the game where Wolves are going to turn it around?
00:24:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
No, it's not. Let's face it, it's a good game for Arsenal, actually. is a good game for Arsenal. They need a home game against Wolves to get back to winning ways. On Sunday, of course, there's lots and lots of European games going on this week, so lots of Sunday games.
00:24:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
Palace at home to Man City, that's a good game, second versus fourth, like the look at that. Forest Spurs, and the game of weekend.
00:24:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
Sunderland versus Newcastle, the North East Derby. Sunderland in ninth spot, 23 points from 15, and having a brilliant season.
00:25:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
Having a great season, particularly at home at s Stadium Life. Having a great season, considering they've just been promoted. Newcastle, three point three places behind, but only one point behind. So they played 15 and got 22. Their away form has been wretched, but they will be massively encouraged by what was a very good away win at Everton the last time they played away.
00:25:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
Thrash them out nowhere. Nobody expected that. Thrash them. up the Hill Dickinson Stadium, 4-1 that finished. So Newcastle will have a bit of confidence going into that game, but Sunderland are very strong at home and they will fancy this.
00:25:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
I tell you now, the atmosphere at Stadium Light on Sunday is going to be mad. It's going to be mad.

I wouldn't fancy it if I was a Newcastle player, I tell you that. It is going to be nuts. And is It's a shame it's at 2 because it should be the 4.30 game considering the 4.30 game is Brentford versus Leeds.

But it's at 2 o'clock on Sunday. Whatever you are doing, stop you're doing. Watch Sunderland versus Newcastle, which should be a cracker. The other game at 2 o'clock on Sunday is West Ham versus Leeds United. No, West Ham versus Aston Villa.

Good opportunity for West Ham to keep. Plugging away because it's a home fixture. The bad news is that it's against Aston Villa who are on such good form as we've just discussed. So difficult one for West Ham.

Monday night to finish off game week 16 is Manchester United at home to Bournemouth, which should be a really entertaining game, by the way. Because Bournemouth are good on the road. They play good football. And Man U are a bit up and down a little bit. But when they're on it, they are playing very well. So there are your weekend fixtures. Right, OK.

That brings us to the end of this podcast. It's so good to be back. I'm sorry that we've missed you over the last few days. All these technical difficulties that have nothing to do with us and everything to do with everybody else. As say, I'm not blaming anybody. These things happen. But it's great to be back. So we're going to start counting down the games as we go on this week to the weekend.
