The SnowJobs Podcast: for a first year event.

RICK JAMES: I think Nick is... i think nikki said they kind of like mid 90s or something it was so people.

RICK JAMES: Yeah. He had a bunch of... A bunch of guys at RSVP said they were coming. Not a bunch, but they're... they're Good handful that didn't show up, but... So, you know. There could have been more than that, too, if they would have showed up.

RICK JAMES: so

The SnowJobs Podcast: There always is always a handful that don't show up Stuff gets away from the week before.

RICK JAMES: Yeah.

RICK JAMES: Yep.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Glad it went well. That's awesome.

RICK JAMES: How was your week?

The SnowJobs Podcast: My week was good.

RICK JAMES: Any big news?

The SnowJobs Podcast: My my week was interesting. i yeah I dropped my retirement papers. So I am officially a short timer, 27 days, 26 days. When you hear this 26 and a wake up.

The SnowJobs Podcast: And I will be done with the with the A job.

RICK JAMES: Oh, what? Yeah, that's gonna be sad. You're gonna miss those showers.

The SnowJobs Podcast: ah Oh, my God. You're fixated on the showers.

RICK JAMES: Yeah, well I'm not. You're the one who talks about them. so

The SnowJobs Podcast: ah Yeah. Yup. uh yeah it'll be uh it'll be interesting i still don't know how how it'll feel but uh you know it's time it's uh definitely time for the next chapter and uh You know, got to keep the pedal down for snow jobs. and We'll see what we can get into next. I'm sure there will be no No shortage of trouble we can get into.

RICK JAMES: Yeah, definitely. no we Yeah. Big things coming, that's for sure.

The SnowJobs Podcast: That's it.

RICK JAMES: so

The SnowJobs Podcast: That's it But, yeah, what are we doing today? We got a good one today, boy. We do. We have not one, but we have three Minnesota Snow Pros for you guys, all right? So this is going to be a two -fold show. All right, one, we're going to hear all about these guys and their companies and let them.

The SnowJobs Podcast: you know Tell us all about how they do snow in Minnesota. But the second part of the show. We're going to hear about an app that these three guys have developed and they that they used last winter in Minnesota. It's called Field Command, and it's about snow pros helping other snow pros. We're going to hear all about what it does, how it can help you, because they're branching it out to the rest of the country this year.

The SnowJobs Podcast: So it'll be available for other snow pros in other areas to take advantage of. It's currently a free app, so we want to hear all about it. So tonight we have Tom Ditch of Liberty Lawn and Snow, Chris Halverson of West Metro Lawn and Snow, and Matt Roman of Pro Lawns. All right, they're all in Minnesota, about 15 minutes away from each other. Um,

The SnowJobs Podcast: But as many guys in Minnesota are, they're extremely collaborative. All right, and that's that's the awesome thing about the MSP, that 2 .0 group that they have on Facebook. If you're lucky enough to be on that group, we are. We're kind of like honorary members. We don't talk on it, but we can see what they do. and

The SnowJobs Podcast: It's a really cool resource. And this app. is kind of branching off from that to continue. being you know a resource for Minnesota Snow Guys to help each other and and get through the storm together. So that's really cool. and We wanted to give these guys a.

The SnowJobs Podcast: We wanted to give them a shout and and let them tell us all about how they can how that app can work for us and and help snow guys in other areas. so That's what we're going to do tonight. But before we do that, we're going to hear from Team Top Gun. We're going to come back, do a quick week in review.

The SnowJobs Podcast: All right, gang, we're back. So quick, we can review. We got to do some announcements here. As we've been saying, storm chasing season two is. up and running we got five episodes up there on the storm chasing youtube page for you to check out all right episode five was triple j it dropped last week uh they got some really good numbers

RICK JAMES: Yeah.

The SnowJobs Podcast: I mean, not that it was going to be hard to beat Klintar, but, I mean, they're definitely the top Canadian episode, that's for sure.

RICK JAMES: Yeah.

RICK JAMES: ah I think he's giving stuff away too. So, you know, being all Triple J, he he likes to give stuff away. People watch his show.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Hey, whatever works, man.

RICK JAMES: so Hey.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Whatever works.

RICK JAMES: Hey, it don't matter. I heard there's a challenge out there, old top dogs. Saying he wants to be top dog, so.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Yeah. that What are they going to do? Shave it one eyebrow? Whoever whoever loses has to shave one eyebrow?

RICK JAMES: All right. I think that's what it was. She shaved one eyebrow, so.

The SnowJobs Podcast: I like it

RICK JAMES: So yeah. Amin. Top Doc should be really well. I mean, I'm in it, so it's got to be really good.

The SnowJobs Podcast: oh there you go I mean say no more

RICK JAMES: so Fuck yeah.

The SnowJobs Podcast: ah

RICK JAMES: arctic steve's gonna be in it i mean the whole bunch of glacier boys are in it so

The SnowJobs Podcast: That's good good.

RICK JAMES: Oh yeah. Todd knows his stuff.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Should be a good time.

RICK JAMES: It's got a good product.

The SnowJobs Podcast: So welcome aboard. Welcome aboard Turbo Todd and Turbo Melt. All right. So you want to get into it with these guys?

RICK JAMES: Let's do it.

The SnowJobs Podcast: All right, let's welcome Tom, Chris, and Matt to the Snowjobs.

RICK JAMES: Let's do it.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Guys, how we doing?

Tom: Good. Thanks for having us. Doing fantastic.

The SnowJobs Podcast: No problem.

Tom: See you, Jeremy.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Anytime guys. Anytime. How's everything out in Minnesota?

Tom: All right. Dry. We're in a drought.

The SnowJobs Podcast: You still got any wildfire smoke from Canada coming down?

Tom: All right.

Tom: yeah A little bit. We have a ton of it. The order is yellow.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Jesus.

Tom: fruit. couple days

The SnowJobs Podcast: God forbid they get their shit under control up there

RICK JAMES: free.

Tom: All right. sunsets, but that's about the only good thing coming out of Canada.

The SnowJobs Podcast: that's it Oh, shit. uh so let's uh let's get going here i don't know how you guys want to handle this if you want to all uh take turns answering but you know tell us a little bit about your companies

RICK JAMES: Yeah.

Tom: sir

Tom: Sure, i I'll start, right? um Like ah most young guys, I... ah I put myself through college doing. doing lawn care snow removal. So I've been in it since 2002. Got a, uh...

Tom: what i thought was my dream job ended up hating it decided that working outdoors was what i wanted to do grew the company. So I had 16 full -time guys.

Tom: And ultimately... That stress sent me to the hospital. I decided that something needed to change.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Okay.

Tom: I dove into my numbers, downsized. um and now I run a mean lean group. and And. Well, the. The top line isn't. is ah but roughly the same as as it was when I was running. the the larger numbers it's that bottom line that i'm focused on now and life is getting so much better

The SnowJobs Podcast: Amen. Awesome. Very cool. Who's next?

Tom: Chris Elverson, West Metro, Long Snow. Uh... We started off 10 plus years ago servicing absolutely everything. HOA, commercial, residential, whatever whatever snow needed to be moved we were taken care of.

Tom: Uh, The Canadian tractor snow model came around and I got absolutely tuned into that some of the boys you've had on the episodes back in the day Nix and Stefano with Northern Snow.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Mm hmm.

Tom: And it felt like the right investment. I actually got on the phone with a lot of local guys, talked to them about other Bacteria Klaus things they were trying. discuss numbers, and eventually pulled the trigger on a you know small fleet of tractors. and fully switched everything over.

Tom: we went we we cut out A lot of our commercial, our HOA is gone. we subbed out the easy lots that were remaining. and in -house we only take care of residential snow it's 300 driveways we knock them out in six hours on four tractors and we run a two inch snowfall trigger which puts us at 10 average.

Tom: service visits over the course of the winter. Within a three mile radius, we pulled all shoveling. After that... And the guys roll around in t -shirts, as you can appreciate out there in New York.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Nice love it

Tom: Yeah.

RICK JAMES: Mm hmm.

Tom: uh tractors and t -shirts man those things are the climate control they are happy boys compared to the jobs we used to put them through The goal was...

The SnowJobs Podcast: That's awesome. me

The SnowJobs Podcast: That's cool.

Tom: Keep it easy. uh make them want their job love their job and completely eliminating or things that weren't. driven towards the one goal residential driveways driveway only No sidewalk crews.

Tom: No salt. lean mean.

The SnowJobs Podcast: And no looking back. you You're happy with the residential driveways instead of commercials?

Tom: Yeah. Yeah, absolutely.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Awesome.

Tom: there's there's downsides to tractors uh but they don't You can't offset The the margins on it the margins are king the amount we can do Even in residential, the serviceable hours, you know, you've got eight win eight hours, maybe 10 if you're in a a lower demand type area.

Tom: But you've got 10 hours to take care of this. In commercial.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Sure.

Tom: you've got far more than that. So we're not running. These long shifts, we're not we don't we're capped at... We have to add trackers every time we want stuff. We can't just keep adding. clients and clients and clients. So there's there's a downside there.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Hmm?

Tom: Our goal is six hours or under for every storm, no matter whether it's 6 inches, 10 inches, 1 inch. it's it's a And our the fun. kind Thing we say about the tractors is tractors don't give a fuck.

Tom: it it's one inch it's 10 inch it just moves it we run all provenance blowers it

The SnowJobs Podcast: Yep.

Tom: They just ride up over that city ridge. They don't care that it's there. We're not getting stuff like we used to with trucks. We're not plowing into people's lawns anymore. it's It's been a...

Tom: it would be hard to look back it would be very hard to

The SnowJobs Podcast: Oh!

Tom: to to go back to the amount of work that was involved now. I totally respect all the boys who are out there. Doing that heavy amount of work and want to run those 10 -12 hours that just wasn't our focus wasn't what we were in for anymore.

The SnowJobs Podcast: um I agree. I say it all the time on here. I think younger guys getting into snow now, that's what they should start with. Go residential.

Tom: Yeah.

The SnowJobs Podcast: that's ah

RICK JAMES: Mm -hmm.

The SnowJobs Podcast: you know less overhead and uh you know more potential for profit if you price it right

Tom: You know, there's there's plenty of room for it. We could have, we've got some great competitors in the area. um Couple guys no one jumped in as heavy as we did initially But there's like four other guys running tractors in a similar or exact same area and they're doing okay for themselves The problem is the density, even here where it's just so straight suburbia.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Mm hmm.

Tom: it's It's hard. We we get... 15 properties an hour. And that's good. Sure, that's good. But when you hear the Canadian boys talking about their model doing 100 properties on a four -hour route.

Tom: i don't know where they're getting that. like that's just wild and To say.

RICK JAMES: Yeah, but there...

Tom: that

RICK JAMES: Sorry, a lot of their properties that I've heard of are like single driveways. Just they're not like you know, they're not like

Tom: Yeah.

RICK JAMES: are big. Three stalls and stuff like that is what I've gathered.

Tom: Yeah. Yeah. No, you're absolutely right. like is If you don't have to... A street. I'd rather have five. wide straight than a two and a half driveway.

Tom: any Any turning and any movement of that thing changes how you maneuver it. It it increases the skill needed. Um, Yeah. There's one thing I always thought I missed. uh was the the pull plow and we never uh we kind of skipped right over that i wish if we would have had it just to try it to have you know a comparison there but uh one straight detractors wouldn't go back to that i uh i just re -listened to uh one of the other local guys who runs a lot of uh battery plows um gear with GNM.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Mm hmm.

Tom: And, you know, those numbers just that that he said that they were doing, you know, on their residential route, I'm assuming they were running all backtracks already in that episode. But. ah But they were you know, like it's sub -10 and it's like it just doing sub 10 an hour just wouldn't offset i don't care that my tractors sit they get parked for six months they don't see the light of day it's fine it's great they're ready to work the second they come back out they'll sell for great money someday when we choose to get rid of them and that's that.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Sure. Nice.

Tom: Yeah?

The SnowJobs Podcast: All right, cool. Last but not least.

Tom: Yeah, I'm Matt Roman of ProLons, and I don't do snow, but I grew up in it. so we had a halloween blizzard back here in my first memory of snow i was riding around my dad's plow truck and getting all the candy because no one else was out on in the road so yeah fell in love with the snow industry i couldn't could never turn away uh but fast forward to when i got married and i don't know if you guys know this but the snow business is kind of hard i uh

The SnowJobs Podcast: but

Tom: almost missed a wedding i was standing in i missed christmas day and that first winter with my wife couldn't told her a surprise we can't take a vacation

RICK JAMES: sort

Tom: in minnesota in the winter and she's like maybe you should get out of that and so i did uh and uh but it's always been in my blood so since 2013 or no 2015 i I feel fortunate I've been kind of able to take a 30 ,000 foot view of the industry. I'm still very passionate about it.

Tom: but not stuck in all the the problems of it and also I also don't get any of the rewards.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Sure.

Tom: I just lose money all winter. but Now that I have an app, I lose it way faster. yeah Okay. matt Matt might not be actively running a snow company, but I've never seen somebody who's not.

Tom: uh Doesn't like have his get on the line literally out there doing the same thing all the other Snow guys do like giving a shit at this high level like always there was always like you don't have to go like measuring for people in like an area because he's the you know Person that lives down there.

Tom: He likes them

The SnowJobs Podcast: it's in the blood

Tom: okay it's incredible

The SnowJobs Podcast: I mean, it's in the blood if it's in the blood, it's in the blood.

RICK JAMES: Yeah.

Tom: Yeah. 100%.

The SnowJobs Podcast: We say it all the time.

Tom: Cool.

The SnowJobs Podcast: you can tell the yeah and You can always tell the difference in the guys too, the guys that actually love doing snow versus the guys that are doing it for a paycheck. It's a totally different quality of work.

Tom: For sure. Definitely, definitely.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Very cool. So what do all you guys do in the summer? What do your companies do in the summer months?

Tom: We all run fertilizer companies. Ultimately, that's that's where we...

The SnowJobs Podcast: Okay.

Tom: Uh, bringing the core of our summer revenue and we are all from the exact same area and we kind of met on that. we We've all you know done general grass management. you know like started there, did that type of stuff.

Tom: except for prolons down here. they've They've been for, you know, since day one. But we've all molded into. Uh... larger local companies.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Do you guys mow it all or just fertilize?

Tom: and

Tom: We sub out the mowing that we have. to some great local guys that take care of it for us.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Smart. Love it.

Tom: I wouldn't have it any other way. Um...

RICK JAMES: Hmm.

Tom: it's They're fantastic. We build relations that way. um Yeah, and we streamline. you know. when we streamline what we do. Okay. I still have a couple couple guys that know yet.

Tom: um it's they've they've been with me for uh all the way through the downsizing. Uh,

The SnowJobs Podcast: Mm hmm.

Tom: and do a great job. I don't have to worry about them. And so it takes that stress off of off of mowing. right mowing is the is the least profitable with the most complaints.

The SnowJobs Podcast: That's what I was going to say. Do you find you still make money mowing or it's just a means to an end to get fertilizer and stuff in there?

RICK JAMES: Yeah.

Tom: it's It's a loss leader for sure.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Yeah, I hear you.

RICK JAMES: Yeah, yeah

The SnowJobs Podcast: That's what I tell her all these young guys.

RICK JAMES: your fertilizer pretty.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Yeah, go ahead, Jack.

RICK JAMES: Now as I say fertilizer company is pretty big down there for you guys You guys.

Tom: It grows as much as we want it to. And that's what's really cool is the, and yeah, pun intended on the grass there too. uh that's what's cool between us three is uh like we the first time we got together we're in the exact same service area and we use the same crm um that's how we got together so we pulled up our list of who's requested quotes in the last five years or so and lined them all up against each other. There were thousands on that list.

Tom: There were like six people that were the same people. So a lot of people are really worried about competition and stuff. And instead we're just like. there is really let's We can't compete with each other. It's it's like um almost impossible in this area. So let's let's help each other. let's let's build this let's best practices, all companies. and in doing that in the comparison.

Tom: it it was It was wild that... that it was so low in the first place. We almost couldn't believe it. but Being together, we started meeting weekly and being together. and having all of our best practices going off of each other and all the all three companies literally running.

Tom: same some of the same documents the same program we we buy with each other we do everything like that together. We all watched ourselves. dramatically grow. And as Matt said earlier, as you know, at will. Like, ah what what do we want to take on? What is our intended? growth rates.

Tom: And it's it's like I have two other people helping run my company. that have no stake in you know like they don't get shit out of it But it's a three -way share. It's incredible.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Yeah.

Tom: Right.

The SnowJobs Podcast: I mean it makes sense.

Tom: on the same topic. Yeah. But.

The SnowJobs Podcast: I mean, what's easier, six guys in a boat rowing together in the same direction or one guy trying to go upstream on his own?

Tom: For sure.

RICK JAMES: Amen.

Tom: Right. and just the collaboration. between the three of us.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Yeah.

Tom: All three of us have benefited in so many different ways. we actually have like formal rental agreements with each other on and on our equipment on our trucks on our on our employees we can plug plug you need.

Tom: entity into the other company.

The SnowJobs Podcast: I love it.

Tom: In a matter of 30 minutes, it's incredible.

RICK JAMES: It's perfect. Weird.

Tom: so Yeah.

RICK JAMES: weird guys work too Weird guys work together and it still works out.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Yeah. Oh my God.

RICK JAMES: Weird.

The SnowJobs Podcast: It's crazy

Tom: It's just wild.

RICK JAMES: You don't have to undercut each other. That's weird.

Tom: so Yeah. no yeah what kind of price setting exactly opposite actually yeah

RICK JAMES: Mm -hmm.

The SnowJobs Podcast: No, I mean... Exactly. You guys are setting prices.

RICK JAMES: Yeah.

Tom: That's illegal.

RICK JAMES: Great.

The SnowJobs Podcast: I love it.

RICK JAMES: this is

The SnowJobs Podcast: That's awesome

Tom: Yeah, i good

The SnowJobs Podcast: So. Are you guys mostly all residential or you do a fair amount of commercial as well?

Tom: Boom. Yeah.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Both.

Tom: ah mostly residential but uh they're definitely oh i maybe you what 10 20 percent yeah that's me commercial Yeah.

The SnowJobs Podcast: So there's that many people. It's so cool to talk to guys from all these different areas. Cause like around here. You ain't getting that kind of. density of residential lawns that want fertilizer.

Tom: That's crazy.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Like it's not a thing here. Like if you take 30 houses.

RICK JAMES: of

The SnowJobs Podcast: Maybe two of them are getting fertilizer.

Tom: Period. that's They're not getting it from anyone else, just two people are getting fertilizer.

The SnowJobs Podcast: No.

Tom: Wow.

The SnowJobs Podcast: that's it yeah like you can you can try and sell it all day long but it's just uh yeah it's not like a you go to ah a housing development and you got 40 houses in there and 35 of them are getting fertilized it's the opposite

Tom: Yeah. No.

Tom: Yeah.

Tom: That's crazy.

RICK JAMES: Oh.

Tom: You know, we we have our our wealthy suburbs that it's every house we...

The SnowJobs Podcast: Yeah.

Tom: but but you can leave there. we we can go into the inner suburbs into the city and it it still is significantly happening at a rate that it is the density is highly worth it it exists everywhere

The SnowJobs Podcast: That's cool.

Tom: within 10, 15 miles of the metro. Even the the triple outer suburbs are all still getting it. And anywhere Lennar is building a subdivision. you know That's a good place to start.

Tom: or you know any of your major builders

The SnowJobs Podcast: That's phenomenal.

RICK JAMES: Yep.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Hey, whatever whatever the demand is in the area, that's what you start selling, right?

Tom: Um,

Tom: Yeah.

The SnowJobs Podcast: the

Tom: you know like And we we joke, right, you drive through a neighborhood and and look for a neighborhood that's got ah a deck.

RICK JAMES: Right.

Tom: right because they've got disposable income.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Yep, there you go.

Tom: Yeah. on those new constructions, right?

The SnowJobs Podcast: ah

RICK JAMES: Yeah.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Oh, man.

Tom: Yeah.

RICK JAMES: Nice.

The SnowJobs Podcast: so what ah What do you got for him, Jay? You got anything for him?

RICK JAMES: Yeah, what do you guys... ah So you guys are in this. we'll get off the grass and then fertilize we'll get back to us to the snow here

Tom: Yeah. Absolutely. Let's do it.

RICK JAMES: So. Oh, we didn't want to start talking about Zap yet or what? How do this?

The SnowJobs Podcast: No.

Tom: Let's do it.

RICK JAMES: How did this, not yet?

The SnowJobs Podcast: I want to.

Tom: Thank you.

The SnowJobs Podcast: I think, you know, you got to, before we go to the app, I i think at least the Jeremy equipment summit, you know, segment here, hear what they run.

Tom: There you go.

RICK JAMES: we we I don't know if we're doing that with these three, but we can definitely do it, yeah.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Sure, yeah.

Tom: Let's do it. Let's go.

RICK JAMES: That's all right. let's ah You know me. I love my equipment. Let's see what kind of equipment you guys are running down in the old cities.

Tom: Yeah.

Tom: I'm pretty straightforward. We have all John Deere 4066Rs with provenance floors on the back of galvanized beauties. Nothing but that at the moment. I am very excited to see some muskets out there.

Tom: they inverted like for real like it's going to be fun we we almost bought into some other options last year And because people started to. creates a a different cutting edge on them like a different down pressure on the back and

The SnowJobs Podcast: Mm -hmm

Tom: we We weren't meant with the yeah the availability wasn't there and you know like even in our area if i want a tractor for this winter i've got to buy it by next week Or it's not going to be around.

RICK JAMES: Yeah.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Really?

Tom: It's crazy, even those those Canadian blowers. And I don't know how muskox will be once they have.

RICK JAMES: Yeah.

Tom: a year or two under you know behind them like will the inventory be there will it be exactly the same but it's what has prevented us from making any changes is the in the it's not available it's it's honestly not just that might sound a little little silly but when we first started buying them in 2021 i don't know that was post covet and it was really hard to come by some you know equipment at that point too

The SnowJobs Podcast: Sure.

Tom: But we that's what we run. and um You know? That's it. That's it.

The SnowJobs Podcast: I would expect them to to follow the same model as the blow as the equipment blower, as the skid blower.

RICK JAMES: I... i would

Tom: Yeah.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Limited run first year. And then once they sold like hotcakes, then, you know, increasing, increase the second and third and fourth.

RICK JAMES: I... I just chatted with him last Thursday at Putz's deal at Valley Greens.

Tom: Yeah. yeah

RICK JAMES: Yeah. um They won't give me a number, but they gave me a range number that they're putting on there.

Tom: that

RICK JAMES: That's a pretty hefty number. I can say that.

Tom: Incredible.

RICK JAMES: And they are... All gone. sounds I mean, not not not all gone, but they're... They've sold a shit ton of these, and I think these are going to...

The SnowJobs Podcast: They didn't even...

Tom: That's all.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Yeah, they didn't even go to Steimer.

RICK JAMES: I think they're going to take the market by storm. I mean, they're going to take they're going to take the market by storm because, I mean, number one, American made.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Yeah.

Tom: Yeah.

RICK JAMES: You can get parts. These guys service. These guys are. on top of it. and So I'm not... I'm not blowing any smoke in his ass.

The SnowJobs Podcast: No

RICK JAMES: Cause they're, they're a sponsor here. Cause I don't, I don't care. I just tell people how it is.

Tom: shit

RICK JAMES: And, and Adam, those guys, they don't. They don't they just let you know what's going on. and I think that blower is going to be the cat's ass. That's for sure.

The SnowJobs Podcast: They didn't go to Syma this year because they said they were selling so many of them. They were already accounting for most of their run and they were going to have nothing to sell.

Tom: Got it.

The SnowJobs Podcast: So they might as well not waste the money going to Syma to show it off.

Tom: kind of good Incredible. who What is their dealer network?

The SnowJobs Podcast: they got I mean...

RICK JAMES: uh there's like rdo is going to be a dealer i know around us and then uh i know they've been down in the cities i'm not sure who for sure is gonna be there Dealer down there. I mean, well, there's already old down there, but

Tom: Yeah, we got an RDO right next door.

RICK JAMES: yeah But, yeah, I know RDO is a dealer for them. so For sure.

Tom: cool

RICK JAMES: So, but yeah, you can always just reach out to Muscox and Dale.

The SnowJobs Podcast: it's It's pretty slick. I'm not an...

RICK JAMES: they'll get back to you in a heartbeat. so

Tom: Dealer support's been huge.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Yeah, I'm not an inverted blower guy, but it's pretty, pretty sick.

Tom: it It is sick.

The SnowJobs Podcast: I've seen it up close.

Tom: I'm glad you think that because it's ah it's a cool thing.

The SnowJobs Podcast: It's...

Tom: And those Canadians were keeping that a secret for far too long.

The SnowJobs Podcast: It is really cool.

Tom: those little

RICK JAMES: Yeah.

Tom: You know, I'm not going to.

RICK JAMES: Yeah.

Tom: Those guys at the border.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Peace.

Tom: To hell with them.

The SnowJobs Podcast: yeah i mean that's that's the thing like first of all ron is just a genius like he he just

Tom: Yeah.

RICK JAMES: Yeah.

The SnowJobs Podcast: You write something on a cocktail napkin, he's got a prototype. built in three days. Like it's incredible.

Tom: I mean, so.

The SnowJobs Podcast: How he does it.

Tom: They're all over my algorithm right now. And it just seems like they. They listened to... all the complaints on inverted. And.

The SnowJobs Podcast: They do.

Tom: They're touching bases on everything. that's cool

The SnowJobs Podcast: It's the same thing they did with the skid blower.

RICK JAMES: That's...

The SnowJobs Podcast: They listen from year.

Tom: Yeah.

The SnowJobs Podcast: We had a. We bought a year one model. And the improvements made on the skid blowers from year one to the models we have in year three. It's incredible. Everything I said, I love this thing, but I'd love it if this was changed and this was tweaked here or this material was a different material.

The SnowJobs Podcast: all changes made all operator requested changes. And if you bring them a thing that will make that thing better. They listen to it and they do it. That's why they're winning.

Tom: Well that's incredible to hear.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Yeah.

Tom: I love that.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Family owned.

Tom: I want somebody local.

The SnowJobs Podcast: I mean, you can't really beat it. Yeah, they're there's still ah I mean, even though they're selling a ton of these things, they still have the same, you know, small family owned type mentality. you know They listen to their customers and they get it done. It's uh... It's the the blower now, the one we got last year.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Night and day different than the first one I mean, they still both work great, but the... The ease of running the new one, it doesn't require as much expertise on the operator. The first year model.

The SnowJobs Podcast: My guys had to really learn how to do it without, you know. Because we have we have cut curbs on where we're doing a lot of the driveways. And if you... They're cut at like a 45 degree angle So if you swing while the flaps are down and you and you don't lift that thing up high enough and you swing it into the curb on the first model year you could have you could bend that flap and it's it's pretty

Tom: See you.

Tom: Hmm.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Hefty steel and and price to replace it

Tom: Sure.

The SnowJobs Podcast: But they've they've adjusted everything. they've really They've made it kind of idiot -proof now where you know I can put anybody in that seat now, so good for them.

Tom: Did you guys see their inverted down and did they have one down at storm day or anywhere else?

RICK JAMES: Yep.

The SnowJobs Podcast: It's

RICK JAMES: Yeah, they had one on Storm Day.

Tom: they did

RICK JAMES: They had one here at Valley Green last week.

Tom: Oh fantastic.

RICK JAMES: and yeah they

The SnowJobs Podcast: Yeah, I've seen it.

RICK JAMES: I mean, you can give them a call if they're in the area.

The SnowJobs Podcast: somewhere else.

RICK JAMES: They'll swing by. I know guys that they're in the area, they'll swing it right by your shop and show you if they're in the area.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Yep. Yup.

Tom: on

RICK JAMES: so

Tom: Fantastic.

RICK JAMES: And they want to show it off because it definitely needs to be seen. so

Tom: Very cool.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Yeah, I mean, and that's how they are. they're They're just like, you know, not to get too far off track, but when when I had them and I was telling Jeremy about it. and they wanted to you know they're like yeah you guys you guys are great we want to get involved with you and jeremy didn't know them so i said well jeremy's got to see it before we you know agree to have you guys come on as a partner.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Jeremy's got to experience it and he's got to give the thumbs up too.

RICK JAMES: Hmm.

The SnowJobs Podcast: It can't just be me.

Tom: Yeah.

The SnowJobs Podcast: And they sent one down to to Fargo. And let Andy Broughton, of all people, who's like, you know, he, I mean, he doesn't do anything soft. You know, he goes hard on everything.

RICK JAMES: Nah. I will.

The SnowJobs Podcast: And they said, do your worst.

RICK JAMES: We ripped that thing.

The SnowJobs Podcast: And they put it through a ah so pile of snow that had been frozen for, what, two months?

RICK JAMES: Yeah.

The SnowJobs Podcast: And it ate it like it was nothing.

Tom: nice

The SnowJobs Podcast: so it was great he couldn't kill it so that yeah they stand behind it they definitely do everything they build

Tom: Good.

RICK JAMES: Yeah. Yeah.

Tom: Well, I can't wait

The SnowJobs Podcast: But, uh, so yeah, as far as, so you're all John Deere's and proud of host.

Tom: Yep. Yep. Yep.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Okay. what ah What else?

Tom: Yep. so I'm uh... I'm Ron. 4066 with a Norman blower.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Okay.

Tom: um my complaints are the same with uh with chris and his bronos the uh The scrape quality is absolutely horrible. Yeah.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Okay.

Tom: you know especially on those wet heavy snows you just end up with an inch of ice

The SnowJobs Podcast: Hmm.

Tom: So that's what I handle my residentials with. And then I've got a 5 Series 5085 with the Agramax Metal Plus. It takes care of a 22 acre townhouse complex.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Okay?

Tom: Um, And. before i revamped i used to do that site with five pickups two skids with snow wolf quattros and all the snow needs to be. Back dragged out of the driveway, sent down the road.

Tom: tucked away in its own little spot. Um, And the fastest that we had. accomplish that with Yes. That equipment was 21 man hours. soon as As soon as I switched over to that tractor with the...

The SnowJobs Podcast: Wow. Okay.

Tom: with the metal plus we got it down to five

The SnowJobs Podcast: Wow

Tom: So. I mean, yeah, that that thing.

RICK JAMES: well

The SnowJobs Podcast: That's awesome.

Tom: I mean, you're able to plow in in two different tracks. two different directions rather than, you know, back down the street with two trucks running side by side.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Yep.

Tom: So just night and day, all about finding those efficiencies.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Absolutely.

Tom: So.

The SnowJobs Podcast: It's all about efficiency.

Tom: He's going to be selling that, though. We're going to send him down to be one of those fandoms, right? Sign me up.

RICK JAMES: Yeah.

The SnowJobs Podcast: How do you like the 4066, John Deere?

RICK JAMES: There you go.

Tom: um it's It's great, right? it Like Chris said, it's... That route is is going to be six hours, whether it's an inch and a half of snow or six inches of snow.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Yep.

Tom: Um, you know I mean, so I've heard horror stories. of Doors falling off, wheels falling off, right? and ah Um,

RICK JAMES: Yeah.

Tom: But fortunately, right it hasn't not happened to me yet.

RICK JAMES: Yep.

Tom: Knock on wood.

The SnowJobs Podcast: On a John Deere?

Tom: Yeah.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Tires falling off and shit.

Tom: No. You guys have each broken a couple.

RICK JAMES: Shit happens, Steve.

The SnowJobs Podcast: What about that heavy -duty green paint?

RICK JAMES: Shit happens.

Tom: okay We pick everything up.

The SnowJobs Podcast: That's supposed to be indestructible.

RICK JAMES: Yeah. Yes.

Tom: us We carry. We carry extra parts. we um uh i'm in john deere because of our dealer our dealer is incredible um he will um harvest parts off the lot for us mid -storm if the building's not open or if they don't have like it's just been incredible

The SnowJobs Podcast: Mm hmm.

The SnowJobs Podcast: That's awesome

Tom: resource It is, it is awesome.

The SnowJobs Podcast: What dealer?

Tom: And you know, if you don't.

The SnowJobs Podcast: What dealer? They deserve a shout.

Tom: You don't, uh, Eric Burnell, uh, Minnesota equipment in Rogers, Minnesota.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Okay. There you go.

Tom: is And a lot of boys here work with him, and he he is absolutely fantastic. He is what has prevented me from...

The SnowJobs Podcast: Good.

Tom: Getting to try Kubota. Um, and I would love to. I would love to try that machine, but I'm not going to. I don't get to, and I'm not gonna.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Yeah.

RICK JAMES: Hmm.

Tom: I couldn't possibly turn my back on somebody who's

RICK JAMES: Yeah.

Tom: who's done so well. And, you know, the 4066 has some issues. But they're nothing that a little. you You have to learn the problems. And then we do a lot of preventative work pre -storm after storm too to prevent the wheels from falling off.

Tom: you know like because that genuinely is what happens.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Gotcha. Sure.

Tom: It's not a great thing. to have yeah

The SnowJobs Podcast: i got you uh dealers like that are worth their weight in gold man so yeah they shout them out they definitely deserve it that's great for them i love to hear it and uh what uh do you guys get them with the nokians like john deere allows you to order them with the like arctic package or something right

Tom: Be happy.

RICK JAMES: mm -hmm

Tom: Yeah.

RICK JAMES: Yeah.

Tom: Yeah. Yep. yep Absolutely. Absolutely.

RICK JAMES: Yeah.

Tom: Fenders, mirrors.

The SnowJobs Podcast: That's awesome.

Tom: um

RICK JAMES: Do you guys rip all that stuff out? Because my guys rip it all off their 3000 series.

Tom: Yeah.

RICK JAMES: they they I might as well just go crash right away as soon as we pull them off the lot.

Tom: ah

RICK JAMES: take it I mean, they were they rip the shit off, fenders off. fucking

Tom: Oh man.

RICK JAMES: All the lights get ripped off. I'm like, what the fuck are we doing? But yeah, they just...

Tom: ah it's it's impressive you know like i wish we could blame it all on the guys but some of it's uh the manufacturer quality because we We just had every fender on our entire fleet shatter last winter.

RICK JAMES: make they

Tom: and we without you.

RICK JAMES: I don't get it.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Really?

Tom: we thought we were doing something dumb because there was too many tractors and and the dealer was like no this is ah just a John, do your problem. It's like, wow. oh

RICK JAMES: All right, let's come back.

The SnowJobs Podcast: No shit.

RICK JAMES: ours come back it was like racing stripe that yellow stripe on the fender you know where that's from one of those bullards or something you know like what what the fuck

Tom: Yeah.

Tom: Yeah. Yeah.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Jesus.

Tom: That's good.

RICK JAMES: you You know what the antennas on those things are right on the corner? and we put them down.

Tom: Yeah. Yeah.

RICK JAMES: Down against the glass they seem to rip them off. I'm like, how do you even rip it off without tearing everything else off?

Tom: Yeah.

Tom: oh They're good.

The SnowJobs Podcast: but

RICK JAMES: They did.

Tom: Good.

RICK JAMES: They do that.

Tom: Good operator. yeah

RICK JAMES: Yeah.

The SnowJobs Podcast: That's cool.

RICK JAMES: Fantastic.

Tom: Amen. Cool.

The SnowJobs Podcast: That's cool.

Tom: And me for snow, I run an iPhone 15 Pro. and field command app.

RICK JAMES: yeah

The SnowJobs Podcast: There you go. I love it

RICK JAMES: There you go.

The SnowJobs Podcast: I love it.

Tom: And a field command.

RICK JAMES: it's

Tom: There it is.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Smartest one of the bunch of us.

RICK JAMES: Who's that?

The SnowJobs Podcast: smartest One of the bloods of us.

RICK JAMES: Yeah, smartest one, yeah.

The SnowJobs Podcast: ah

Tom: Yeah, broke it.

RICK JAMES: It's only a better option.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Uh...

Tom: are they

The SnowJobs Podcast: So, Chris, you you don't do any de -icing, right?

Tom: yeah

The SnowJobs Podcast: You're just... Straight up.

Tom: no Yeah.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Clear the driveway.

Tom: We don't.

The SnowJobs Podcast: All right, cool. So you're you're so you're already smarter than most of us.

Tom: Yeah.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Uh, Tom, what do you guys do for de -icing?

Tom: Just granular at this point just throw a a hitch spreader boss hit hitch spreader in the back of the truck through a...

The SnowJobs Podcast: Cool.

Tom: five gallon buckets of bulk salt and back just um du from those five five gallon buckets.

The SnowJobs Podcast: sounds good all right cool you guys use a contractor weather service up there in minnesota or no

RICK JAMES: Thanks.

Tom: yeah

The SnowJobs Podcast: Or you just use the MSP 2 .0.

Tom: that now I've used them all.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Yeah.

RICK JAMES: Yeah.

Tom: I think I've had every ah forecaster and they have their place. Um, I personally found that we didn't need them anymore for a two inch trigger. Um, there's there's There's only... a little bit of information you really need.

Tom: I need to know total and I need to know cessation time. And if you can't tell me sustain cessation time, the value goes significantly down. try as they might. you have to be tuned in with them the entire time to get that anyways and i personally can do that or our network now can do that significantly better.

Tom: um if you weren't in the msp network i would or in a part of our you know facebook group previously and now field command that can give you you know ah push notifications to your phone saying the storm ended 20 miles west of you like you know Yeah, there's some value there.

Tom: but not Not anymore.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Yeah.

Tom: deleted it all.

The SnowJobs Podcast: That's awesome.

RICK JAMES: nice

The SnowJobs Podcast: Cool. Alright, sweet. So the only other question i want I want to know from Chris is... What's your driveway contract structure?

Tom: Yeah.

The SnowJobs Podcast: You guys do it per push, per time, seasonal. What what do you get them for?

Tom: Happy to share, and I hope ah everybody in my local area is listening. yeah Prior to I always love to tell people this prior to quitting sidewalks. We were charging. two thousand standard residential home with your your sidewalk out front.

Tom: We were charging up to $2 ,000 for a three stall with the city sidewalk and the front walk up. $2 ,000 seasonal seasonal only.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Okay.

Tom: We bailed off city sidewalks. We lost a decent chunk of revenue. We're but bailed out from all shoveling and we went to straight driveway. We are $800 for a three -stall driveway.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Okay.

Tom: Paid upfront. seasonal rate No cap. We ran it with CAP for... Our driveway, we ran it in the cap for like eight years. and we didn't find it mattering.

Tom: We got one or two billings in shoulder season on occasion. but it only felt like we were taking something from the client that they may not have owed us anyways, like a light winter.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Okay.

Tom: We went out and plowed six times. Are we really going to bill for an April snowfall? Everybody can say that you should and you can. but we reconfigured it. end -to -end. $800. Full season rate.

Tom: 2 -inch trigger. And we've watched some guys. rise up with us because i'm not shy about our pricing and i tell everybody around that they can get more money out of this, significantly more money and than what they're charging.

RICK JAMES: that

The SnowJobs Podcast: And you're in a, what, a 55 -inch average market?

RICK JAMES: so is that

Tom: Yeah. That's it.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Okay.

Tom: Yep. 55 inch.

RICK JAMES: when when he When you hit the 100 in this year a couple years ago, that didn't bother you?

The SnowJobs Podcast: I was just gonna ask that.

Tom: It didn't bother me at all. we ah I think we went out 17 times. that was our And the funny thing is that was our number in anything above 17 in our contract we were going to start billing for.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Okay.

Tom: And it it didn't. It didn't bother me at all. We always say that. Are.

RICK JAMES: Okay.

Tom: Our costs are are fixed in the winter. We have salary workers. All of our snow guys get a guaranteed set of money and they get paid more if we work more but our only expense in the storm is diesel so if we work 12 storms or 17 storms. It's couple dollars in diesel and you know a breakdown or something sure but

The SnowJobs Podcast: Yeah.

Tom: But it's.

RICK JAMES: so

The SnowJobs Podcast: Cool.

Tom: Go ahead.

RICK JAMES: sorry you sorry Sorry, your cap was amount of times out.

Tom: No.

RICK JAMES: It wasn't snow totals.

Tom: We did both.

RICK JAMES: That's what it was.

Tom: weve We've had both.

RICK JAMES: Okay.

Tom: And we switched because it didn't make any sense to residential clients to.

RICK JAMES: Okay.

Tom: to give them a snow inch total and i get you know if you're up in uh susan rie or something you know put an inch total on it but we're you know

RICK JAMES: yeah

Tom: we didn't need to our commercial structure would

RICK JAMES: It'd be a centimeter total

Tom: Yeah, there you go.

RICK JAMES: yeah

Tom: And who knows what the hell that is. Use freedom units down here.

RICK JAMES: Yeah. We don't. Yeah.

Tom: Freedom units. yeah you know commercial we're at we were at 68 inches residential we were at 17.

RICK JAMES: fifty

Tom: when we you know cut all that away and it just got simpler. We're just giving them a clean, straightforward offering. that is end to end. all -encompassing We're going to take care of you. And we get a lot of loyalty out of it. And oh, the fun part, all contracts ought to renew.

Tom: Every dollar that's on the books is back next winter. They have to cancel it. you know we get a 10 15 cancellation rate or something like that tops and And everybody's just right there ready to rock the next game.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Cool.

RICK JAMES: No no fight back for the not doing sidewalks anymore. and They don't care.

Tom: No, the day we switched, we got a lot of questions and it was met with a lot of understanding.

RICK JAMES: They just. Okay.

Tom: It was the labor cost that went into it wasn't making us a productive company. um conveniently it was post -covid when we switched so everybody was like very in tune to

The SnowJobs Podcast: Sure.

Tom: you know, what labor at was actually worth at the moment, right? um So it was a very, very easy easy transition. We had a 10 % client drop, and it was like 6%, 7 % added us back within three years.

Tom: because no one was offering the. consistency that we have. we just We haven't failed you.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Sweet.

Tom: never failed we over staff we you know Uh, youre Under promise and over pride. Incredible density, too, as well. So but then like if if one tractor on the far side of his service area breaks down, he's there in five minutes with the other farthest one.

Tom: Absolutely, the other farthest tractor.

The SnowJobs Podcast: that

RICK JAMES: who it is.

Tom: And then it's the network. And if it's not one of my guys, it's, you know, the 50 other contractors that are friends in the local area coming to. help us figure something out.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Yeah, that's a that's a home run.

Tom: it's just it's wild

RICK JAMES: Nice.

The SnowJobs Podcast: I love hearing that

Tom: Yeah.

RICK JAMES: What? What kind of like routing app are you using? If I can ask that.

Tom: Yeah, Service Autopilot. um it's a That's long CRM.

RICK JAMES: Okay.

Tom: And I'm a big fan. They quit developing it years back. There were a lot of promises in it. We're just so in it for lawn that switching over for snow just never quite happened. Followsoft, some Canadian software, almost got us a year or two.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Mm hmm.

Tom: They've got some things that are cool, geofencing. It's the one thing we're missing. geofencing it can do a lot if we added that in we would be ah providing even more to our clients, which would be cool. We know a couple of local guys and they run into some problems that they then have issues fixing in Storm. and and I don't know. I'm not French -Canadian. the If the Canadians don't even like him, I don't i don't know you know. They're not going to like me.

RICK JAMES: <unk>na

The SnowJobs Podcast: ah

RICK JAMES: Yeah. I've heard that.

Tom: Yeah.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Oh shit. Cool. uh what do you think jay you want to uh you got any more questions for these guys about their companies or you want to get into the app what do you want to do

Tom: Yeah

RICK JAMES: I don't... Whoa. they run Are you guys running different too? for besides The driveway guys, any apps? or no. I know you just run on probably TikTok and stuff on your iPhone.

Tom: that's how we got to meet each other.

RICK JAMES: But...

Tom: Yeah. That's how we got to meet each other is we all use service autopilot. And basically it was like, hey, this sucks.

RICK JAMES: Okay.

Tom: We get together and figure it out. And that's that's where this got together.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Gotcha. All right.

Tom: this started. thank you

The SnowJobs Podcast: Commiserate.

RICK JAMES: Gotcha.

The SnowJobs Podcast: All right, cool.

Tom: Exactly.

RICK JAMES: Yeah.

The SnowJobs Podcast: All right, so since this is a hybrid -type episode, you know what I think the best way to do it, Jay, is to let's hit commercials right now, and then we'll come back and we'll get right into the app with these guys.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Alright, we'll be right back.

The SnowJobs Podcast: All right, we're back. Welcome back to Yeti 2. Yeti is back on board. And now they're. Dude. Done with the quarter. They're going full year. Back on board for the full.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Full time with the Snowjobs Love having them back

RICK JAMES: Yep. Yo, yo. Yeti's great.

The SnowJobs Podcast: They got some new stuff coming, dude.

RICK JAMES: That's what you said.

The SnowJobs Podcast: they got uh we got we got an episode we're doing with them they got a lot of new stuff coming for that uh for that software so be interesting to hear about but let's get back into this with the guys so tell us all about field command whoever wants to get into it

Tom: could get in the frame. Okay.

Tom: Yeah, so Field Command, you've you've known about... uh the facebook group snow pros 2 .0 and it sits there's like what 2700 people in this group and it's

The SnowJobs Podcast: Mm -hmm.

Tom: people who touch the snow industry in the minneapolis area but it goes it goes way far you're obviously in at north dakota and there's guys who chime in from out there but uh the that uh facebook group has lots of awesome community where guys are like where are you getting your your plows from who can service this uh but the crazy cool thing came during snows where

The SnowJobs Podcast: Sure.

Tom: uh a guy they would start a designated thread and it would be like post up the snow totals you're seeing because if you're 30 minutes out of the twin cities and you've got a lot in downtown minneapolis The only way you know how much snow is there is if you physically drive there, which could be two hours during a storm.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Gotcha.

Tom: or or you hopefully can call a buddy who's there. And we're just sitting here watching this and the Facebook group is watching this. It's like, let's post community totals. Wherever you're at, post a total and hopefully other people are sharing their total. So you're watching these storms live as we touch down and we'll hopefully get into a little bit more, but you know when to dispatch, you know what kind of snow has fallen.

Tom: um And it so we we. The problem with the... the community threads was People would post random stuff. There's a couple problems like there's ah There's an inch and a half at the target in Roseville.

Tom: I don't know where the heck the target Roseville is. That doesn't help me. And and i I don't believe that inch and a half because someone else said that there was three inches what also in Roseville, wherever the heck that is. So the the other thing with that is that thread got locked up with people like.

Tom: Can anyone do a lot in this area? My my truck broke down. So... I started. following the data especially last year when we rolled out field command in minneapolis and like these threads could be 300 comments long during a storm, which is f freaking awesome. So cool.

Tom: However, About 40 of those threads were actual snowfall data pieces. and when the heck were they even posted right especially when you get after a storm and you're like When was that inch and a half?

The SnowJobs Podcast: Yep.

Tom: what what the heck happened uh and when you're in the storm it's obviously a whirlwind so We put together an app that it's instead of a... threaded list of of random comments, it's pins on a map. The pin says the snow total and the map is filterable by time. You can look back 30 minutes, you can look back an hour, and you can actually see what is actually happening on the ground.

Tom: times a few hundred people posting uh throughout the the twin cities and that uh test Uh, run here in Minneapolis was was wildly successful and really cool and and there was a lot of value to it.

Tom: mm -hmm

The SnowJobs Podcast: That's awesome.

Tom: We've got report we've gotten reports from guys saying that that they've used the app for

The SnowJobs Podcast: So what's. Go ahead.

Tom: not only insurance claims, but for billing disputes. yeah right and they're able to pull it up pull it up and say oh okay well here's not just my measurement but here's other other contractors in the area right that are that are showing

The SnowJobs Podcast: Cheers.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Somebody else has the meter stick in the snow.

Tom: And it's, here's, it's not, yeah, here's three independent contractors around you who all show the same amount. it's And as you know, talking about contracts, there's seasonal they want you to come if you got a two inch trigger they want you there at an inch And then there's the the per push people who, if you come at an inch, they'll kill you.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Oh, yeah.

Tom: So that they're they're you're getting fought both ways.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Yeah.

Tom: And that's really where a lot of the bread and butter of the software is, is those. trigger -esque snows. There's it should you go or should you not go and and then can you back it up when you have god um but then it also comes down to if you do have contracts or you have tiered limits or whatnot having that independent peer verified proof of snow totals.

Tom: is incredibly valuable as well.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Okay, so you're and you're pushing this out to different areas this year

RICK JAMES: That's awesome.

Tom: Yeah, we built it to go nationwide. and And last year it was kind of like you were talking about with muskox. It was funny hearing that. like we we were ready with v1 on november 1 of this software and like man it couldn't get any better it's perfect everyone's gonna love it Holy crap, did we run through the rails.

The SnowJobs Podcast: ah

Tom: So we came out with a a good V3 in about January and got about half the season. So we're glad we did this test market and and got all the the... bugs out of it.

Tom: um we're ready to go and they weren't necessarily bugs they were just we were Foolish on on how users would use it. We we couldn't someone would enter 500 inches instead of five inches because it's 5 .00 and we didn't even have a way to like undo it we didn't even think that anyone would do something like that but we got all that

The SnowJobs Podcast: Oh.

RICK JAMES: Hmm.

RICK JAMES: Oh.

Tom: ah

The SnowJobs Podcast: That's cool. That's really cool.

Tom: Yeah.

The SnowJobs Podcast: So that's basically... In its essence. You A bunch of guys in a certain area get this app and they can post real time photos and measurements of what their snow totals is and talk about. Start time. you know, end time, stuff like that.

Tom: So that's that's the core of it, right? So that's that's the backbone of it.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Okay.

Tom: And then we started improving off of that. um you You can follow other contractors.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Okay?

Tom: So when Chris posts a total. I get a notification that Chris has posted. Yeah.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Okay.

Tom: And so, Jeremy, if you're if you're up in Fargo and and you post.

RICK JAMES: Okay.

Tom: Hey, the Clipper is coming. Right? Um, And so when you post it started.

RICK JAMES: Right.

Tom: And then when you post that, it stopped. I now have ah have a snapshot of how long is it actually going to be snowing. Right?

The SnowJobs Podcast: Gotcha.

RICK JAMES: Mhm.

Tom: Um, and steve i know that you talked about talk with uh was weather pros and they had actually reached out directly to you just how much snow is on the ground

The SnowJobs Podcast: Yep.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Yep.

Tom: Um, And so how powerful would this be for them to be able to just look at at a map?

The SnowJobs Podcast: Yeah.

Tom: and say okay well we can update our forecasts to nationwide. Um, so that's that's

The SnowJobs Podcast: Love it.

Tom: That's our goal. And you were your I was just going to say, so like the first thing you do when you open the app is it's a, it's a, so it's a play to play model.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Very cool.

Tom: That's how we. make it free it's uh if you want to see all these other people's data all we ask is that you make a report yourself you put data on the map and then you get an hour of viewing time

The SnowJobs Podcast: Okay. That's fair.

Tom: Or more. uh if with some other stuff but anyway the first thing you do is you take a photo so you get out of your truck we actually i know you can see this but we made a bunch of little plastic business cards that are rulers and you go throw that in the snow and you take a picture of it, you get back in your warm truck.

Tom: it asks you a few questions is this surface treated or untreated that matters if you're doing commercial lot.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Yep.

RICK JAMES: Mm -hmm.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Definitely.

Tom: What are the current conditions?

RICK JAMES: yeah

Tom: in the pavement they're ice present are you doing salt or are you just pushing uh surface activity is it blowing drifting is it melting what's happening. what's falling is it regular snow is it wet snow is it sleet all these things are critical to know for the contractor for what am i going up against uh and then so you you enter that report you can put any notes in that you want like uh screw you jeremy or whatever you want to say we we usually check for Jeremy Harris.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Sure.

RICK JAMES: Yep.

Tom: but yeah and then we love we do love exactly he's he's

RICK JAMES: Yeah.

The SnowJobs Podcast: but I don't know what that was.

RICK JAMES: Yeah.

Tom: the backbone of the whole snow pros thing. so yeah we've We've actually had meetings with Jeremy Harris about this.

RICK JAMES: Yeah.

Tom: so

RICK JAMES: Yeah.

The SnowJobs Podcast: That's awesome.

Tom: So you submit that report and then you get to view the entire world. that The entire world is on the app, but of course it's... probably only showing the snow that's happening around your area.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Cool. so and you So you said it it's a play -to -play, so it's basically free.

Tom: Yep.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Do you also have you also have a pay version?

Tom: Yep.

Tom: We do. We do. And that's generally so. When contractors start getting into commercial accounts and stuff, we have a paid version. It's got some cool features to it. The coolest is what we call recon sites. There's a military theme here. with field command but we got recon sites so if I've got a lot 20 miles east of me

The SnowJobs Podcast: Okay.

Tom: I can put a pin on that lot. And then I get. push notifications to my phone for any reports that are happening in that area so if i'm curious is the snow slowing down did i hit my two inch trigger did i hit my one inch trigger is it done i actually get push notifications for those recon sites you can place around wherever i could put one in in new york if i wanted to and follow you The other things, the proof.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Cool.

Tom: By the way, the pro version is $100 for the year. it's eight dollars a month so

The SnowJobs Podcast: Oh that's not bad. Yeah, that's not bad at all

Tom: The other thing it does is all the pins that have ever been put on the app, which is thousands, and and will be much more as we get through our first half season. uh they're all available historically to go view so as you guys know liability slip and fall claims do they come the day after a storm when you have all the information in front of you

The SnowJobs Podcast: Sure.

The SnowJobs Podcast: No.

Tom: No, they're coming 18 months later. so

The SnowJobs Podcast: Oh, at least.

Tom: Here you can have pure. verified data with pictures of Well, when you made that claim, when you did that fall, it was still freaking snowing. What are you talking about? This is five people in the area i said it was still snowing.

Tom: Um. Then what else does it do? It's got... um the pro version historic data and oh a bunch more time you get a lot more uh if you submit a report you then get three hours of viewing time just because you're probably running a a bit bigger of an operation you're probably a bit busier it gives you some more time then after that three hours it'll say hey can you do another post so we get more data on the app

The SnowJobs Podcast: Very cool. Very very cool

RICK JAMES: I just yeah. I just downloaded a little. It looks pretty cool. Okay.

Tom: Yeah, and it it looks way cooler when it's snowing right now. Nothing's happening.

RICK JAMES: Yeah. Yeah.

Tom: you

RICK JAMES: I'm sure, but yeah.

The SnowJobs Podcast: that's awesome

RICK JAMES: it is

Tom: And.

The SnowJobs Podcast: How long did it take to develop the app?

RICK JAMES: Yeah.

Tom: Good question. It took about eight months in the summer and then about four really intense months once it hit the first client in the winter. And then we've obviously been toiling with it and we we got a lot of things in the pipeline for it, which we're really excited about, too.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Very cool. So how...

RICK JAMES: Who's the smart one that came up with the app?

The SnowJobs Podcast: Yeah, go ahead.

Tom: ah a Jeremy Harris? No.

RICK JAMES: ah

Tom: Hmm. it

RICK JAMES: Uh...

Tom: was just an inspiration of that facebook group like this data is awesome in this facebook group But it's... Darn near unusable. Let's just reformat it so it's incredibly usable. yeah

The SnowJobs Podcast: That's cool.

RICK JAMES: Nice.

The SnowJobs Podcast: That's really cool. So now how? How does this work? um You... You know, you said you wanted to go nationwide. So do I just, okay, I'm so -and -so from this area.

The SnowJobs Podcast: I just get 20 of my friends that are in snow to sign up. Download the app.

Tom: Yeah. I mean, honestly, think think smaller. Yes, that, yes. do that actually don't get 20 get 100 you got a lot of friends

The SnowJobs Podcast: Okay. Alright.

Tom: yeah But... i think Think in your company. Uh, you've got 10 employees you've got uh they don't live at your shop They don't live at your sites.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Mm hmm.

Tom: They live in the general area. around. And that's what that was the data we were always sharing with different contractors. It was, you know, where I live, I'll go outside and measure, right? And if you know enough contractors that live places, maybe you know something close enough to the sites you're servicing.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Gotcha.

Tom: This is that for you guys me and me and my crew like to post totals for each other and it just pings your phone It's not some text you have to read. It's just a ping uh at so and so says there's you know 1 .5 inches at this place so if you just did that for just your crew You alone.

Tom: would have enough to find value here in that But if you are friends with other local companies or other local business owners or weather en enthusiasts, anybody who's curious. about what's actually happening. um Those would be incredible people to share it with.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Cool.

Tom: You know, and if just.

RICK JAMES: It's cool.

Tom: if you're just getting started in snow. It's an asset for just the slip and fall liability, the billing. um you know download it just for for yourself so that you have a record.

Tom: um That's... That's constant. Right. um

The SnowJobs Podcast: Mm hmm.

Tom: Yep.

The SnowJobs Podcast: You said there was a, that you said there there was a, you could follow different companies, right, on it.

Tom: Yep. Hmm.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Is there something that allows you to network with those companies, like contact information for the companies, stuff like that?

Tom: Yeah, yeah, we built in a so that's there's There's a marketplace to come and a a supply line to come. and that's really We've worked with a bunch of people on your show.

Tom: Joe Uran at Nordic will haul snow.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Mm hmm.

Tom: Tyler Guerin at Guerin Outdoor. He sells salt. and we we're developing a marketplace just for the snow industry which yeah you can go google who sells salt and it'll tell you target can can get you covered it's they got 20 bags for 10 bucks they're good uh however getting that valuable data for who's open at 2 a .m on sunday night We're developing and it's all geographic based.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Sure.

Tom: You pull it up. Who's near me? for that marketplace. So what we did was we went to that Snow Pros Facebook group and searched over the last three years.

RICK JAMES: No.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Okay.

Tom: What are the questions that people are asking? um You know. Who's open for salt? Whereas who's got a mobile mechanic? Those types of questions. And so this this marketplace will...

Tom: If you're a mobile mechanic, you can... you can Click in. Hey. i'm I'm available. it It'll turn your pin to green. and it will follow you. And so if you're...

RICK JAMES: Hmm.

Tom: if If you're in Minnesota and you're having a light winter. I think but that mechanic can now travel and chase that snow. How powerful would it be if if he can follow that snow and find work? in Madison.

The SnowJobs Podcast: That's cool.

Tom: And then one other step is on on all the posts.

RICK JAMES: right

Tom: And this is where we're we're kind of seeing what what people want out of Facebook and what people want out of the app. You can comment on everyone's posts that they put on the app. So if you see a guy who's representing a company that's a snow service company.

Tom: he's in your service area or maybe you've got an account in that area and you're you want to sub it to him because you're sick of driving out there you can reach out to him directly on that app shoot him a message yeah and that's the part about the app too is there's so much social proof

RICK JAMES: Oh, nice.

Tom: each each post that goes up there if If you get a thumbs up on it, the person who posted it gets like an extra credit, of an extra minute of viewing time on the app.

Tom: so it promotes like you should thumbs up each other's stuff and at the same time if people thumbs down your stuff it tracks that and if you get three thumbs down you uh your pin is removed it just it gets rid of bad data it's automatically policing and then if you get a bunch of pins removed you're just a troll on this app It boots you off the app.

Tom: it's

The SnowJobs Podcast: What what if you get a bunch of thumbs down just because you got a bunch of dicks in the area?

Tom: You know, we found...

RICK JAMES: Yeah.

Tom: it those yeah totally there's plenty of dicks out there That's only New York.

The SnowJobs Podcast: yeah

Tom: That's just New York.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Ow.

RICK JAMES: Supporting goods.

Tom: Something about a shower I hear. Meh.

RICK JAMES: Yeah.

Tom: You moving there, Tom?

RICK JAMES: Ugh.

Tom: um we've We've found that maybe it's just our network, maybe it's but we don't know a lot of the people that are using the app. Um, people value the data that's coming across their end so much that thumbs down are typically only happening for when somebody misprints and has 50 inches instead of five.

Tom: yeah We're not seeing it someone being targeted.

The SnowJobs Podcast: I got you.

Tom: you'd have to have a lot of you'd have to have a decent amount of people hating you to get all your pins removed you know like so we just don't see that happening

The SnowJobs Podcast: Jeremy.

RICK JAMES: Me.

Tom: you know and It is.

RICK JAMES: Yes.

Tom: you You talk about the networking, right? I've been in my area for 25 years. I'm seeing pins in my you know, five mile radius of people that I had no idea it did snow.

The SnowJobs Podcast: No shit.

Tom: And now it's a comment on one of their.

RICK JAMES: Huh.

Tom: one of their posts, yeah um verify who they are right and actually build a relationship with them. Totally.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Very cool.

Tom: And you just increased your network of who is providing you with the data you need to not have to leave your own house. um much less get out of bed half the time because build that network you're going to get people giving you the data you need to find out.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Absolutely.

RICK JAMES: is it Is it only a certified snow picture if it's a green credit card? There.

Tom: It's that, you know, we give bonus points for that.

RICK JAMES: perfect

Tom: No, I'm just kidding. It is. That was one of the things we had to figure out is we were demanding ruler pictures yeah because that's what we want. That's tough.

RICK JAMES: Yep.

Tom: for a lot of guys to get and especially if you're busy out in the storm so we kind of made a tiered system where man if you just take a picture of snow and you have a good reputation on the app uh you're probably not going to get a thumbs down but if you have no reputation and you're claiming this many inches you better prove Good.

RICK JAMES: it' white It's it.

Tom: We all know that the first knuckle is one inch, second knuckle is two inches, right?

The SnowJobs Podcast: that

RICK JAMES: Yeah.

Tom: So so that's still valuable the data. Um,

RICK JAMES: Six inch yardstick.

Tom: Nice. Yeah, so we totally take ah finger measurements and a lot of guys don't want to have to get a ruler.

The SnowJobs Podcast: That's funny.

Tom: are out and do it and take a fancy picture so they'll just dump a finger in quick and do it and you can I mean it is It's verified by the other pins around it. It really is. The the more density you get, it like if so if there's a random five in a cloud of threes, it just doesn't make sense. and it like It...

Tom: but we all know those those storms exist so then there's the option to comment on and be like is this really like are are you serious and you know and it's a verified quality user someone somebody else knows and said yeah it's five inches right over there there's this pocket of you know it's training back on itself

The SnowJobs Podcast: Yeah.

Tom: The wraparound's happening.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Oh, I definitely, I want to get this in my area. These guys will love seeing the fucking difference in totals.

Tom: Get it Yeah, you love it.

The SnowJobs Podcast: in Five miles.

Tom: Okay. Totally. Well, think about the the mountains, you know, and you talk about the difference in elevation and.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Sure.

Tom: and You know, if... if you're five miles away in the mountains you could have a Vast difference.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Yeah.

Tom: in snow totals.

The SnowJobs Podcast: yeah there i mean there is here east east or west five miles can mean you know on a one foot storm one place that could be the difference in six seven inches and in five miles west of you

Tom: Oh huge. Yeah.

Tom: Mm hmm. Sure.

The SnowJobs Podcast: We're used to you.

Tom: And even even bigger, though, is when you're right around trigger.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Well.

Tom: If one side is getting a one inch and the other side is getting three inches, that's thousands of dollars.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Sure.

Tom: Even for a solo owner operator, that's a thousand thousands of dollars of swing right there.

RICK JAMES: Hmm.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Oh yeah.

Tom: in you Go or don't go.

RICK JAMES: Oh mate. It might help. Like, Stevie, I always say you you guys... You guys always battle with the guys with your certified snow totals. If you got a bunch of guys saying this amount and then the certified snow total guys saying this much.

RICK JAMES: they might be able to change it or something you know so

The SnowJobs Podcast: 100%. That's what we had during the big the the one or two big ones we had last year where they they changed the totals.

Tom: Yeah.

The SnowJobs Podcast: The NWS actually changed their total too because... Everybody was showing them. They were pull pulling out fucking measurement photos and saying, look.

Tom: Yeah.

The SnowJobs Podcast: You know, you're saying 16 inches. Everything we're seeing is over 22.

Tom: Yeah.

The SnowJobs Podcast: you know What are you talking about? you know You're short. Well, wow.

Tom: That's what we were looking at.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Holy crap.

Tom: The National Weather Service, they're taking these measurements at airports. and they're

The SnowJobs Podcast: Junk.

Tom: Their process.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Yeah.

Tom: they they wipe the board clean so they're just getting like accumulation what's actually happening on the pavement. Yeah.

RICK JAMES: Yeah.

The SnowJobs Podcast: I'm telling you, the spotter, the National Weather Service spotter for fish kill. is a crazy old cat lady.

Tom: but

The SnowJobs Podcast: That's not coming out to measure on her back porch until the cat's got to leave the house at like 11 a .m.

Tom: you a huh Peace.

The SnowJobs Podcast: And it's been done snowing since seven. The sun's been out for four hours and it's now four degrees above freezing.

Tom: Good job.

The SnowJobs Podcast: And then she's taking the measurement after it's compacted six inches.

Tom: That's incredible. Tom, does your mom live up there?

The SnowJobs Podcast: Fucking nut jobs.

Tom: Oh shit. Well, you got to get that upgraded. You got to talk to those boys and tell them to X the cat lady and get somebody new.

The SnowJobs Podcast: It's not so bad here we We have a new spotter this year going into this year.

Tom: Yeah.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Somebody got certified.

Tom: Or maybe they'll just start using...

The SnowJobs Podcast: But that's awesome, guys.

Tom: Yeah.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Good for you.

RICK JAMES: Yeah.

Tom: Good.

RICK JAMES: Sounds like a great deal.

The SnowJobs Podcast: So... How was it how was it received? like Do you know how your stats, like how many guys have downloaded it and stuff? How was it received in the Minneapolis area?

Tom: Yeah, so we had over 1 ,400 unique users download the app last year, which we were pretty darn impressed with because our reach our reach was really just that Snow Pros MSP.

The SnowJobs Podcast: That's awesome.

Tom: and if we saw someone driving by with a plow on their truck and and we could stop around the gas station right

The SnowJobs Podcast: Yeah.

The SnowJobs Podcast: I mean, that's huge.

Tom: Oh.

The SnowJobs Podcast: 1 ,401 winter.

Tom: right and so

The SnowJobs Podcast: That's really huge.

Tom: Then once we got the app, like actually working in January there, there was like. four storms left in the season and we got over like 550 verified reports throughout that storm so that or those four storms is Super valuable.

The SnowJobs Podcast: That's phenomenal.

RICK JAMES: Nice.

The SnowJobs Podcast: And you guys, it's not like this is a video game app where the whole world could download it. You guys are like us. You're in the same boat. Super niche market.

Tom: Yeah, for sure.

The SnowJobs Podcast: You know, it's snow guys only.

RICK JAMES: No.

The SnowJobs Podcast: So, I mean, that's huge.

Tom: Exactly.

The SnowJobs Podcast: 1 ,400 guys.

Tom: Yeah.

The SnowJobs Podcast: That's great. Good for you guys.

Tom: Appreciate it.

The SnowJobs Podcast: And where can everybody find this?

Tom: It's hard work.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Is it on the app store or where is it?

Tom: Yeah, it's on both Android and Apple. Or if you just go to our website, Field Command Pro. dot com P. R.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Yeah.

Tom: O. You can find it on either side.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Very cool. Very good.

RICK JAMES: I want to know who

The SnowJobs Podcast: Go ahead, Jack. Go.

RICK JAMES: I want to know who. taught tyler gearing how to use it because he's not the brightest

Tom: There you go. he's on there he's and it's fun to troll him during a storm when he posts that

RICK JAMES: It's just... He is, I don't know. I've seen him use his phone last week. He stayed at my place the other night. and he Didn't seem like he knew how to use a phone. so

Tom: If you can use it, right? and you

RICK JAMES: ah

The SnowJobs Podcast: Yep.

RICK JAMES: Amen.

Tom: tyler's ah Tyler's my neighbor out in Corcoran. We just live a couple gravel roads away. He's a fantastic guy and a good friend of all of us, actually.

RICK JAMES: He's great, dude.

The SnowJobs Podcast: I actually owe him a phone call i got it He asked me a question.

Tom: Ooh.

RICK JAMES: Yeah.

Tom: Oh.

The SnowJobs Podcast: I got too busy.

Tom: Ask him about the app.

RICK JAMES: Yeah.

The SnowJobs Podcast: not

RICK JAMES: Yeah. Him and Luke stayed here the other night in Lineham.

Tom: Oh fantastic. That's cool. Right on.

The SnowJobs Podcast: So, like, what are your future plans for this? Because apps ain't cheap to develop. They're not cheap to run with all the the time invested and stuff. So if you're running a free app. guys you said guys can subscribe a hundred dollars a year of their commercial and and doing the pro

Tom: Feel free to. keep that

The SnowJobs Podcast: Um, Any other plans? You're going to obviously have to recoup costs somehow.

Tom: So yeah, we, that pro version, that $99, that barely keeps, that's for the year again, that barely keeps the lights on. We are looking to kind of... We're no smarter than Facebook's.

Tom: We're trying what they're doing. We're trying to get users, and then we're we're looking for advertisers. uh we have such a niche market that the advert you you get it with your podcast here the the market is so important and and so targeted that that's that's what we're looking for here as we go national.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Yeah.

Tom: and we

The SnowJobs Podcast: you're doing it you're doing it the right way you're doing it proof of concept first like all right prove that people want this and need this and once you do they'll all come

Tom: some advertising. Yeah. Yep.

RICK JAMES: yeah

Tom: Right on. And so, yeah, that's that. Right now, we just have it set up for every time you you submit a report, a a short little ad comes on. and And we work with some of the other people who've been on your show.

Tom: We actually worked with TurboMelt last year. That was cool. We worked with Joe Uran and Nordic on their snow hauling.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Cool.

Tom: And obviously, we're we're not trying to. uh get advertisers in there who are stepping on everyone else's toes but there's lots of vendors that touch the whole industry. And that's where we're going next.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Sure. 100%.

Tom: Yep.

The SnowJobs Podcast: That's awesome.

RICK JAMES: That's great.

The SnowJobs Podcast: That's cool. I mean, 1400, that's great. um I'm curious of what... What are you thinking? Like, what are you thinking the reception is going to be now going nationwide? like Are you going to see the the snow areas that, you know, the New York cities and the the Detroits and Chicagos? You think you're going to see a lot of users getting it there?

Tom: I want to hear from you, Steve. You tell us. we We actually brought this to another friend who is in Jersey and representing one of those. venture capitals who bought all those companies out there.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Okay.

Tom: but But she was talking about like, hey, man, if you're putting up totals or whatever, that's for the competition. It seems like the markets are a lot more competitive, maybe especially out east.

Tom: What are your thoughts on that?

The SnowJobs Podcast: I mean... totals. I don't think anybody gets hurt by posting snow totals.

Tom: So, thanks.

RICK JAMES: No.

The SnowJobs Podcast: I mean that.

Tom: Agreed. Now keep in mind it's not It's not.

The SnowJobs Podcast: that has nothing in my in my mind that has nothing to do with competition in the area i mean if two inches is two inches your your cost your price is going to be your price that's that's already happened well before the snow gets reported

RICK JAMES: Right.

The SnowJobs Podcast: So I don't see how that's going to.

RICK JAMES: Yeah. Oh.

The SnowJobs Podcast: you know, be a problem.

Tom: So keep in mind here, it's totals and end storm totals are great because they provide a whole set of data that's valuable at the end for you.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Hmm.

Tom: It's the in -storm. trigger totals notifying everybody.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Sure.

Tom: that That is actively happening. We just hit trigger right over here. How do you see that data being? received by

The SnowJobs Podcast: I think that's great. i mean

Tom: yeah

The SnowJobs Podcast: ah Yeah, around us, a lot of it's... we're all very like they say zero tolerance but we all know that's a kind of a bullshit statement there's no such thing as zero t but we're very extremely low tolerance so as soon as the first flakes are flying we're out period but there are also commercial properties that

Tom: Yep.

RICK JAMES: mm -hmm

The SnowJobs Podcast: you know, are paying bargain basement prices. And if it's a 12 inch storm. you can bet your ass they're not coming until every ounce of that 12 inches.

Tom: Yeah.

The SnowJobs Podcast: have fallen and stopped.

Tom: Mm hmm.

The SnowJobs Podcast: So. I mean, i but there's also a lot of guys in between. So I think it, I mean.

Tom: Yeah. mean

The SnowJobs Podcast: Any snow app? That is... basically trying to build a community no matter what it's doing any snow organization Everything's about collaboration now. I think we've proven that in the last three or four years.

Tom: 100%. Yep.

The SnowJobs Podcast: yeah Everybody gets further together. than they do by themselves.

Tom: Yep. Yeah.

The SnowJobs Podcast: and Anything that's trying to promote that and and help build that. that idea I think is going to do fine.

Tom: You know, and and to further on your question. uh last End of the year last year. um we saw that the pocket that we created in in Minneapolis -St. Paul was slowly starting to expand.

Tom: right We're starting starting to see more and more posts out in.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Okay.

Tom: in Western Wisconsin. and further north. ah yeah yeahp right and so hopefully we we can start a pocket in new york and that just starts to start starts to spread

The SnowJobs Podcast: Cool.

Tom: Right. and

The SnowJobs Podcast: Yeah.

Tom: And so.

The SnowJobs Podcast: I think it's going to be like the Major League Baseball umpires. The weather companies are going to be on notice now with their fucking snow totals they're calling because now you're going to have ins instant replay.

Tom: Yeah.

Tom: Yeah, that's right.

The SnowJobs Podcast: yeah Oh, you what?

Tom: Exactly.

The SnowJobs Podcast: How much? Six inches? Because I got four pictures saying 10 here.

Tom: ah

The SnowJobs Podcast: You know, in this area.

Tom: yeah

The SnowJobs Podcast: So it's going to keep them on their toes.

Tom: We have one of the local weather forecasters, one of the the internet guys on the app. Uh, bonus weather.

The SnowJobs Podcast: I love Bo.

Tom: And he. Yeah, there you go. find Good. Has Beau been on the show?

RICK JAMES: Yeah. Yep.

The SnowJobs Podcast: no Bo's not been on the show but Bo I love how he sticks to his guns and he's not afraid to tell people basically fuck off this is my forecast and this is why

Tom: There you go.

Tom: Wow. Good.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Like I like that.

Tom: no, you... He likes to ride it to the end. Some people don't like that.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Well... i'm i'm in new york i love that you know i don't give a shit like i remember one snowstorm where People were calling him out saying your forecast is ridiculous.

Tom: Good. Yeah.

The SnowJobs Podcast: There's no way we're going to get 18 inches, blah, blah, blah. And he's like, screw you.

Tom: Yeah.

The SnowJobs Podcast: I'm a professional. This is why it's going to happen. And just wait, it's going to happen. And sure enough, it freaking happened. So I love that.

Tom: awesome

The SnowJobs Podcast: Like. Shut the fuck up. I got this. you i'll Just wait, watch and see. So I love Bo. I love how he does stuff.

Tom: We do too. yeah That was one thing that came with our app last year was you got some bow forecasts. prior to the storms too, which is so valuable. but that's something that we're as we're figuring out how to go national how do we scale something like that because bow is obviously specific to this area but that ah type of thing is so valuable what's what's gonna happen and what's happening and then you can look years from now if you need to if you get sued what happened

The SnowJobs Podcast: Yeah.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Yeah.

Tom: Wow.

The SnowJobs Podcast: that's cool so you guys eventually you eventually are going to want to partner up with some kind of national weather company for snow guys

Tom: Yes.

RICK JAMES: Yeah

Tom: Absolutely.

RICK JAMES: That'd be cool.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Got it. All right, cool. I might be able to make a contact for you.

Tom: do You know me. yeah

The SnowJobs Podcast: yeah i might be able to put you in touch with a company that that wants to hear about that

Tom: yeah Yeah, we would think so. yeah

The SnowJobs Podcast: Cool.

Tom: Yeah.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Actually two of them. We'll...

Tom: you like them both huh competition's good Yeah.

The SnowJobs Podcast: We can call both of them. Call both of them and let them ah let them have at it. See which one wants it.

Tom: There you go.

RICK JAMES: There you go.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Cool.

Tom: I would imagine we have the same two on our well on our radar. and end up.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Probably.

RICK JAMES: Yeah.

Tom: putting putting Putting us in touch would expedite some of that.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Probably.

Tom: Cool.

The SnowJobs Podcast: The two that don't cost like $2 million dollars a year for fucking snow weather.

Tom: There you go. Yeah those guys

The SnowJobs Podcast: The ones that are actually reasonable in price.

Tom: Yeah Those two.

RICK JAMES: Yeah.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Yeah.

Tom: Yeah.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Yep. Okay, same guys. That's awesome, guys. i think I think it's a great idea. I love it. I love hearing that you had success with it in the Minneapolis area. I don't see why it wouldn't branch out and be able to work. it You're just going to need that that spark. in in every area.

Tom: Yeah, right on

The SnowJobs Podcast: that first, you know, three or five guys that'll, that'll sign up and do it. And then Like you said, it'll it'll branch out from there as guys see it as a resource.

Tom: For sure. Absolutely.

The SnowJobs Podcast: It's cool.

Tom: totally there's a little incentive too if you do sign up your buddies then you get you can get pro for free if you get like three signups or something like that and get that historic data for free.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Okay.

Tom: Yeah.

The SnowJobs Podcast: There you go. And you guys, you said you have a website, fieldcommandpro .com?

RICK JAMES: Cool.

Tom: You got it.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Alright, cool. And that's the best way for people to get a hold of you if they you know so if people are hearing this and want to sponsor.

Tom: Yeah, they can direct contact. um ah Contact page, everything's listed right there. Contact page goes right to one of us three idiots, so you're going right to the start.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Sweet.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Love it. i love it man i love the concept and like i said collaboration is definitely it may not have May not have been the direction of the industry 10 years ago, but it sure as hell is now.

The SnowJobs Podcast: I mean, guys have seen.

Tom: now it needs to be it's amazing how it's changing

RICK JAMES: Yep.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Yeah.

Tom: and just those sleepless nights right

RICK JAMES: care.

The SnowJobs Podcast: It's well, it's also it's a new guard. Like, I really think that a lot of the older guys that were set in their ways, you saw a lot of them disappear with COVID.

Tom: Yeah.

The SnowJobs Podcast: They just kind of packed it in and the younger. the younger generation, the, uh, I'm saying younger. 50. 50 to 55 and lower, you know, the. that have been in in maybe 20, 25 years, but they're still young in the game. They haven't been doing it since the 80s.

Tom: Yeah.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Those guys are the ones that are setting the tone now. so it's And the younger, the really younger people are following it. so It's been good. And I don't see it slowing down. People are seeing results from doing it.

Tom: Yeah.

The SnowJobs Podcast: As long as you can show them results. you know They'll keep doing it.

Tom: i I think the fact that we're finally seeing innovation in the industry, or not finally, but now it seems prevalent and it's happening.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Yeah.

Tom: it's got That's got to mean something.

RICK JAMES: Mm -hmm.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Yeah. you're seeing You're seeing small companies that nobody heard of five years ago that are now shaping what the next big thing is coming out because they've innovated it. and Now they're forcing the mainstream contract or not contracts the mainstream manufacturers that have been around for decades.

The SnowJobs Podcast: They're forcing them to up their game. Everybody wins.

Tom: Mm -hmm.

The SnowJobs Podcast: If everybody's always up in their game and innovating.

Tom: Yep.

The SnowJobs Podcast: You know, everybody wins. It's great. All we need now is the snow. We need another widespread bad winter like last year and have a couple good winters like that. and then we have the money to spend on all this new innovation.

The SnowJobs Podcast: So it's it's good.

Tom: Right. so well

RICK JAMES: Yep.

The SnowJobs Podcast: I did get the first reports this year of people that had bad winters that their customers are pinching pennies on them.

Tom: Yeah.

The SnowJobs Podcast: For this upcoming winter.

Tom: Man.

The SnowJobs Podcast: It's not in my area, but it's... I did get a couple reports from the Northeast. ah Massachusetts seemed to not want to spend money on snow.

Tom: And there will always be takers, unfortunately.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Yeah, you'll always, I mean, no matter how much we try and and rail against it, you're always going to have an idiot that feels like.

Tom: You're welcome.

The SnowJobs Podcast: I have this truck and I have payments on it

Tom: Deal.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Um, So I got to take it for whatever I can get it at. and You know, you'll always have the guys that work for the Nationals with no guarantee they're ever going to get paid, even if they do spend the four hours logging in all the information and photos correctly.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Wow. You're never going to stop that completely, but you can make it harder. For sure.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Anything else, boys? Do we cover everything?

Tom: Jeremy, are you going to use it? i didn't hear my what What are your questions or thoughts on the app?

RICK JAMES: Yeah, I just downloaded it. I think I'll be, yeah, definitely be. Checking that out for sure. mean

Tom: I'm telling you, buddy.

RICK JAMES: Why not? I play with a lot of different apps on the phone during the snow event, so why not why not add another one?

Tom: Thank you.

RICK JAMES: so

Tom: There's one more. And you can see some guys you know and like on there.

The SnowJobs Podcast: I'll get it going around here.

RICK JAMES: Yeah.

Tom: Um,

RICK JAMES: Yeah.

Tom: Woody. uh Do you see any... Uh... limitations or something that would prevent a spread to your local market. like any Any thoughts on that?

RICK JAMES: No, I mean, there's the way it sounds pretty simple. I mean, you know i don't know i don't know what would be an issue. of posting snow, you know. totals and start times and stuff like that i mean

Tom: Yeah.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Yeah.

Tom: Yeah.

RICK JAMES: and I was.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Yeah, I can't think of

RICK JAMES: It seems like I'm the weather guy for most people around here. They just follow suit with what we do, then they go do. So, I mean, now they can see it on an app. Why not?

Tom: Cool.

RICK JAMES: so

The SnowJobs Podcast: if there's a contraindication for using it i can't think of one i don't know why

RICK JAMES: Seems pretty simple.

RICK JAMES: I just don't i don't know what would be a problem.

The SnowJobs Podcast: No.

RICK JAMES: user I just think it'd be all good. I mean, it's... it's The more information out there, the better. and you know Like you said, guys are all sharing all this stuff nowadays. so let's ah Let's all get it done together. It's a shitty.

RICK JAMES: We're in the shittiest conditions and we're under a time crunch, so...

The SnowJobs Podcast: All right. And you can actually.

RICK JAMES: Let's help everybody out.

The SnowJobs Podcast: I mean, you can actually help people with this too. yeah Like I said, not only do I not see any contraindications of of using it, but. this is there there were a couple times in the last couple years i can remember that we got snuck up on where lake effect bands that don't ever make it this far east

RICK JAMES: Mm -hmm

The SnowJobs Podcast: uh made it and if you were asleep at 1 a .m

Tom: Yeah. For real.

The SnowJobs Podcast: And you had no idea. The weather guys didn't call for it.

Tom: Mm hmm.

The SnowJobs Podcast: none of the weather said anything about it There were guys that happened to be up at 1am when it started snowing, letting their dog.

Tom: Oh yeah.

The SnowJobs Podcast: I let my dogs out.

Tom: Yeah.

The SnowJobs Podcast: At 1 .30 and it was a half an inch of snow. I'm like. Holy shit, it's stock. Like, where did this come from? We have to go out.

Tom: Yep.

The SnowJobs Podcast: We ended up getting three inches one night between 130 and... 4 .45, I think it stopped. But half the half the companies weren't even out. Nobody even knew about it.

Tom: hundred percent. Totally.

The SnowJobs Podcast: So, I mean, if you start like if that's me and I'm letting my dogs out now, I take a measurement and post a picture saying, hey, it just started snowing here. We got a half an inch already.

Tom: Yeah. okay

The SnowJobs Podcast: Doesn't that being everybody in the area's phone and wake them up?

Tom: Yes. Things everyone who's following you everyone in your area everyone who has a recon site in your area

The SnowJobs Podcast: So then it helps, you know, it helps save a bunch of guys' asses maybe.

Tom: And for us, it's it's the Clippers. Right? The Clippers will roll through.

RICK JAMES: Yep.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Sure.

Tom: it They're not even on the radar. Nope. But they cro they'll drop half.

RICK JAMES: Yeah. Clippers will kill you.

Tom: an inch inch and a half. Right?

The SnowJobs Podcast: Yeah.

RICK JAMES: Yep.

Tom: You're spot on.

The SnowJobs Podcast: So, I mean...

RICK JAMES: Yep.

The SnowJobs Podcast: and I said, I think that's helpful.

Tom: Edit.

RICK JAMES: or the frizzle and all that shit, so yeah.

Tom: Incredible. That's the goal. yeah The goal is to keep people in bed and let and and not make every single contractor go out and get that data. like i mean Get the data from your house. but you don't need to go drive a everybody doesn't need to be out driving a 15 20 mile radius Not everybody asked me doing that and the app had really

The SnowJobs Podcast: Sure.

RICK JAMES: Mhm.

Tom: The amount of people I know that it kept them at their own house during a storm. It was wild. It was just so everybody was so surprised by it.

RICK JAMES: How many of you guys...

The SnowJobs Podcast: That's big.

RICK JAMES: ah check DOT cameras. Can I check DOT cameras like crazy, you know?

Tom: Yeah. Yep. Yep.

RICK JAMES: So this is kind of um just another tool in the toolbox.

Tom: and

RICK JAMES: so

Tom: Exactly. Yep. yeah You'll get a push notification for snow starting.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Cool.

Tom: One inch trigger, two inch triggers. Snow ending. It's just... you know. it can leave you It can leave you at your own. residents if you're you're in it and then you get a network especially once a network builds around you

The SnowJobs Podcast: Sure.

Tom: and if you get uh your employees on the app too, then they're getting those push notifications and you're not always the bad guy.

RICK JAMES: Yep.

The SnowJobs Podcast: What if you like being the bad guy all the time?

RICK JAMES: Yeah.

Tom: Yeah. There.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Oh, shit.

RICK JAMES: Yeah.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Well, I think it's great, guys. i think I think you got a hit there, and I don't see any reason why it's not going to take off in a lot of different areas this winter.

Tom: Good, yeah.

Tom: Really appreciate that feedback.

RICK JAMES: yeah

Tom: Thank you.

The SnowJobs Podcast: No problem. So field command.

RICK JAMES: Wishing you the most success.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Yeah.

Tom: Thank you.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Field command is the app. All right. So go check out of the Apple store or the app store, whether you got Android or iPhone, it's available for both. and download it, and let's help this this app go nationwide.

The SnowJobs Podcast: I don't. I don't see any reason why it's going to hurt. It's free to try it. and and build a network in your area that can help you guys out.

RICK JAMES: inna

The SnowJobs Podcast: So I love it.

RICK JAMES: i'm go see if i can be I'm going to see if I can be banned by next Friday with snow totals.

Tom: There you go. yeah Get some thumbs down.

The SnowJobs Podcast: There you go ah

Tom: Let's do it.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Oh shit.

RICK JAMES: Yeah.

The SnowJobs Podcast: All right. You guys got anything else for us before we let you go?

Tom: That you do. Thank you. yeah Just appreciation. Thank you.

The SnowJobs Podcast: No problem at all. not Anything we can do, let us know.

RICK JAMES: Thanks guys.

Tom: Great being on.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Alright, cool.

Tom: have a good night

The SnowJobs Podcast: All right. so All right, guys, then we'll wrap it there. That's going to do it for episode 184 of the Snow Jaws podcast main show. As always, thanks to the guys for the time. As we said, check out the app on the App Store. Field Command is the name.

The SnowJobs Podcast: If you've got any questions, head over to their website, fieldcommandpro .com, and get a hold of them. All their contact information is on the website. That'll do it for us. Everybody have a. great week. Be safe out there.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Keep pushing.
