What is up, everybody? It's Nick Torres here. And in this episode of shaping your pottery, I'm going to be talking about how

Speaker
The book, The 22 Immutable Laws of Marketing, can help you discover your own unique voice with your potter. You see, while this book, The 22 Immutable Laws of Marketing, is a book about marketing, some of the concepts in there can actually help you discover your own voice and stand out from the crowd a little bit better. I learned about this book from reading Tim Ferriss' book, The Tools of Titans. And in this book, he recommends this book
00:01:13
Speaker
for anybody trying to learn about marketing. And he said, this is the only book that you should be using to learn about marketing. And this book is really, really easy to read. It's maybe about 100, 110 pages. You could easily read it in a day. It is super easy to read. But now let's discuss how these laws can actually help you discover your own

The Law of Leadership in Pottery

voice. More specifically,
00:01:39
Speaker
how the first two laws in this book can actually help you discover your voice. So you see the first law in this book is called the law of leadership which states it's better to be first than it is to be better. Now imagine you are making pottery and
00:02:01
Speaker
Everybody else is making virtually the same thing. They have pretty much the same type of style. They're making mugs, they're making bowls, whatever. They may have their own spin on it, but now imagine if you were first into a category, first into something that you are making, something that is unique to you, something that you came up with yourself.
00:02:26
Speaker
What do you think that would do to your pottery, to discovering your voice and to help you sell your pottery? Well, here's what I think. I think that if you were to be first into discovering something that you truly make and you make it look unique,

Creating New Categories in Pottery

00:02:44
Speaker
then I think you're gonna be able to start standing out from the crowd a lot better, a lot easier because you are being unique with your pottery and your voice can really show. Two, I think you're gonna be able to sell your pottery a lot easier as long as you're documenting your work in your pottery. The reason why I think this is because you are the first in that category into that niche
00:03:09
Speaker
And when you are the first, it's easier for people to recognize who the first person was to make it as long as you are documenting. So that's why I think the first law is really important for you. If you could try to be first in making something new, then you are going to go a lot better, go a lot further just by being first. So the second law,
00:03:36
Speaker
is the law of leadership which states it's better to be first sorry which states it's if you can't be first in a category set up a new category you can be first in so you see these two laws are basically kind of the same with one another the only difference is if you can't be first in a category that you're trying to make
00:04:03
Speaker
then try to something new that you can be first in create something that you can be first in. So let's say you are sculpting lamps. Let's say you are sculpting lamp vases. This is the shape of the lamp and you want your lamps to look really kind of have some movement in it. But you see a lot of other people already doing this now.
00:04:28
Speaker
What if instead of you are trying to make it look like everybody else, what if you added in some animals to your sculptures or maybe you create a whole new category completely different compared to everybody else and you are going to be able to stand out a lot better this way just by creating something new. It's better to be new than it is to be
00:04:58
Speaker
first almost really try something try to be first but create a new category for it if you could create your own category for your what you are making then you are going to go a lot further with your voice

Encouragement and Listener Interaction

00:05:15
Speaker
because you're gonna be the first in that category and it's gonna be new at the same time and other people are gonna start wanting to do this and you're gonna see a lot better opportunities come your way just by being either the first in a category or creating a new category itself which you could be first in. These opportunities are gonna start showing up a lot better because of these two laws. If you could be first or make a new category which you are first in.
00:05:45
Speaker
This really helps you start to distinguish yourself as a potter, as a business person, whatever it is you're trying to do, just by these two laws.
