Welcome to the Italian football podcast. Next question. We've got two questions on the same topic. Leo Rizzo asks, who has been more of a flop sign so far? Douglas Luis or Matias Sula, and who has more chance of coming good? Igor lipova ahlio Lipovats asks, ciao ciao. I heard you guys were going to be talking about more about Douglas Luis in the Q and&A. I just wanted to ask if he reminds you a bit of Condogbia coming to Inter. Very similar vibes in it. Cheers and much love.

Innit. I love that he actually wrote Innit. You can see on the document, I did not write that. He wrote that. So, you know, extra gold star for Igor. It's a very Bedford word. It's a word very commonly used in Bedford, Innit, at the end of the sentence. Isn't that like a Cockney slang, Innit? Yeah, it's a bit of a southern England. It is southern England, but... Yeah, southern England thing, yeah. And London, but yeah, it's used in Bedford a lot.
00:01:00
Speaker
Yeah, Bedfordian English in it is a very core word in the dictionary of Bedfordian English. Bedford taking over the world. yeah taking What do you make of this? Let's start with the Douglas Louis Soule thing. um What do you make of that? Who's been the biggest one? I really don't know. Well, both of them have have had a pretty disastrous start.
00:01:28
Speaker
for for For Douglas Louise, it's been a big surprise. I thought he would do very well. I thought he'd be suited to the Thiago Montes style of play, the way that they keep the ball. He's very good in short spaces. He showed that at Aston Villa, very good at at kind of Tiger-ish, winning the ball, you know, seemed to have a strong mentality. I thought he'd be very, very good. I thought he would kind of, you know, and in preseason, he looked pretty decent as well. I thought he would he would start really strongly, but yeah, he's he's had a bad start. I mean, Motta didn't seem to trust him at the beginning. I think maybe that was, he came back late from preseason. He he wasn't fully fit. he Didn't have a proper preseason like everyone else. And, you know, Motta didn't,
00:02:16
Speaker
wanted to have those that had more pre-season at the beginning of the season. and that So that was a reason for his slow start. Then when he did come in, he performed really badly. Then he went through that nightmare stretch of of you know giving away the penalty, nearly giving away another penalty, and really just be being terrible. And then um it just goes from bad to worse. He then gets injured in the warm-up ahead of the Stuttgart game.
00:02:42
Speaker
And and you know you and and that was that was a big, big blow because Juventus were already completely decimated. and And yeah, it's it's been a really, really bad start. um As for Soule, I mean, for Soule, I was a bit more concerned, not because I don't think he's got talent. I think he's got big, big talent and we was one of the best dribblers in Serie A, the stats show it, ah how dangerous he was in terms of creat creating, scoring, dribbling for for a small team last season. and We saw that. My concerns were always, as I said from day one with the transfer market aroma, I didn't like the way that that
00:03:19
Speaker
team was constructed in terms of all the players they signed and the current players, the players they already had in terms of fitting the pieces altogether to create a workable cohesive team. That was my concern and how Soule would fit together with Paolo Di Bala because Paolo Di Bala has shown throughout his career that he can't really play with with wingers in a team that plays wingers. So already that was a ah concern for me and that's been obviously shown. And now Zurich has come in, he doesn't play wingers.
00:03:47
Speaker
um and Sue lays a bit buggered. So... If I'm answering the question of who i think who's been the biggest flop, I think they've been equally big flops so far. I don't think you can separate them, but if if I were to say who I think has more chance of coming good, um if the current managers stay as they are, I would probably say Douglas Louise, because I think that you know it's not that he's not playing a system that suits him, he's just not performing at the moment. Whereas with Soule, or Soule, he's not going to perform in in this system. They don't play wingers,
00:04:22
Speaker
he's not going to perform. So for Soule to flourish at Roma, he's gonna they're going to need to change to a probably a system playing with wingers and that might mean another coach. That's exactly it. i read and That's exactly what I was going to say. I think, this it' it's yes, they've both been flops but it's for two separate reasons. ah The Soule situation is insanity because going from Derossi to Ivan Yurich and then Yomaki signing of the summer being Matias Sule, as we said on Monday, when we discussed Roma, it's insanity. it they To me, that is
00:05:03
Speaker
but that That's an ownership issue. You've given your sporting director instructions to buy according to this coach, and then you sack that coach for reasons that we still don't quite understand, and then you bring in a coach that doesn't even remotely play anything similar to the previous coach, but you're stuck with a team, especially in the attacking phase, who have players adapted to the previous coach. It's just it's insanity. um There is no coherence at Roma, and I understand why Roma fans are so pissed off, and Roma media ro media are so annoyed,
00:05:32
Speaker
um I completely get it. I think they've completely mismanaged it. And with everything coming in, there's even you know questions on if they're going to be focused or not on Roma enough. um And and and it's it's just it's just it's it's it makes no sense to me um at all. And I wonder what they do with him. Douglas Luis, I've got to be honest,
00:05:53
Speaker
Um, I wonder if I cursed him when I called him David Luis in one of our earlier episodes when he joined. Um, but, um, seriously, it's, it's atrocious. He looks, he looks like a fish out of water. He looks so confused. I mean, Tiago motors has, but is Brazilians born in Brazil, if I'm not mistaken. So clearly they do speak the same language. What is going on? It's literally looks like they don't know how to communicate with one another. He looks so lost.
00:06:23
Speaker
um tactically in this, and I don't understand, he's a big, big signing. What was he, 60 million? 50 million, yeah. 50, I mean, you can't afford to fail. you know Italian clubs just cannot afford to fail signings of that magnitude.
00:06:37
Speaker
um And it looked to me, it just looks like a giant. They they prioritized him over Riccardo Calafuri, I mean. Which is just, I mean, that's a huge dud for Giuntoli. That's a huge L for him, as the kids say. and I'm not going to write him off yet, though. No, I'm not writing him off yet, I'm just saying so far. He showed some good, he showed some slight improvements in that game against Lezio, even if, you know, he got lucky, obviously, with that with not getting sent off. But but he, yeah, he he he Yeah, I think tactically there's more chance of him coming good than Soule in the current set. No, I do 100%, as long as Joric is there, Soule is dead. It's as simple as that. There's no future for Matthias Soule whilst Ivan Joric is there. And that's my opinion, because he doesn't play with wide wingers like that. He likes more kind of inverted wingers if he plays a 3-4-2-1. I agree with you, Douglas, at least I'm not writing him off yet. But so far he has been, like Igor wrote, more Condogbia than anything else.
00:07:36
Speaker
And that's a big problem because Juventus can't afford to have a player a marquee signing that big transfer fee. Huge wages. being that crap. They just can't afford afford that. And it's a problem. But i'm not um like I said, I'm not ready to write him up just he write him off just yet. um But it's it's it's a concern. It's definitely, it's no longer just a red light. It's an alarm bell going off. And they need to sort that out somehow. well How they do it will remains to be seen. But it it is an issue. There's no doubt about that.
