Introduction and Rewatch Schedule

We're talking Mandalorian movie trailers and we're doing it real quick. Aren't you a little short? Aren't you a little short? Aren't you a little short for a stormtrooper?
00:00:14
Speaker
Hey, welcome back to Short for a Stormtrooper, 15-minute Star Wars podcast. We have been in the middle of a rewatch slash watch for Phil for the first time of The Mandalorian while we are waiting for The Mandalorian and Grogu movie to come out. We had a little bit of scheduling problems, so we will be back to the rewatch next week.
00:00:36
Speaker
But I wanted to take this opportunity to talk about, still in the realm of The Mandalorian and Grogu movie, The realm of the trailers with an apostrophe, not an apostrophe, has a plural as the trailers. So let me break down what happened. You probably saw one or both trailers.

Super Bowl Ad and Fan Reactions

00:00:58
Speaker
we were expecting a new trailer for The Mandalorian and Grogu, kind of the official trailer to be released during the Super Bowl, which is kind of a commonplace that big movies that are going to come out in the spring or the summer will have their trailers revealed.
00:01:16
Speaker
And what we got instead was an advertisement. And you can look it up on YouTube if you haven't seen it. If you remember, we saw kind of a snow-covered scene and we saw some feet of some animals running over it. And it was very, very reminiscent of some of the old Budweiser commercials, especially the Budweiser Super Bowl commercials with the Clydesdale horses running in slow motion.
00:01:50
Speaker
But you took a look at it and you realized that those were actually Tauntaun paws. Well, of course, they pulled back and it turns out that it was kind of Tauntaun drawn carriage.
00:02:03
Speaker
Carrying the Mandalorian carrying Grogu. There was some voiceover that again sounded just like the old Budweiser Super Bowl ads Schmaltzy said something about the force, you know, it it was funny. I thought it was kind of amusing They were obviously doing a tribute slash parody of the old Super Bowl commercials and That is what they released. So there was no trailer.
00:02:35
Speaker
There was this small commercial. Well, as you can imagine, the fandom, not very happy about that.
00:02:46
Speaker
I saw so many posts out there in social media around Look at how bad Disney has gotten with Star Wars. Look at how far we have fallen. This is terrible. This is the end of the world. Star Wars is over. Blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. Well, again, Star Wars being the only fandom that loves to hate what it loves, that's what you're going to see.

Target Audience and Official Trailer Release

00:03:11
Speaker
Now, I thought what they were trying to do was to make sure that the general audience, that is a whole big percentage of America,
00:03:23
Speaker
And definitely a big percentage of the world knew there was a new Star Wars movie coming out. It was The Mandalorian and Grogu. It caught people's attention. It let them know that this movie was coming. And for that, it accomplished, I think, what it was supposed to do. We have to remember as fans that they aren't making this advertising for us, right?
00:03:49
Speaker
Either we are going to be so disgusted with what Disney has done to Star Wars, blah, blah, blah, blah. blah The Mandalorian season three sucked, blah, blah, blah, blah. blah That we're not going to go see it or we're going to boycott it or something stupid like that.
00:04:04
Speaker
Or we're just going to go see it, which is probably true of most people, even the ones that hate it. They're still going to go see it. The people that they needed to sway were not the fans or the people who are never going to see a Star Wars movie whatsoever. It's the more casual people who just probably weren't even aware that something was coming out. So it piqued their interest and it is going to launch the entire advertising campaign, which is what we finally got this last week.
00:04:35
Speaker
So finally, I was overjoyed to be looking at my phone in the morning. i think it was the first day of my new job, actually. And i saw the update from YouTube The Mandalorian and Grogu official trailer released now.
00:04:54
Speaker
So of course I went out and watched it. And let me tell you friends, I am so pumped for this movie after seeing that trailer. It doesn't mean that I don't have some reservations about it. I still have some questions.
00:05:09
Speaker
But I am very excited about the movie. So let's break down the trailer a little bit. And again, i imagine that you have already seen this. If not, go out and watch it on YouTube and then you can hear me kind of ah opine on it here. The first thing I want to mention is the music in the trailer was great. I have always loved...
00:05:29
Speaker
The Mandalorian music, I have loved what Ludwig Goranson has been able to do to make a style and a genre of music in a Star Wars film that didn't sound like a Star Wars film.
00:05:43
Speaker
but still was great on its own. And this trailer was super interesting in that it started with Luke's theme. You heard a reference to the you know original Star Wars theme, and then it transitioned, as we realized what it was, into the Mandalorian music, but a little bit more orchestral. Not quite the you know the mouth flute and the stringed instruments and stuff like that that you typically hear in a Mandalorian soundtrack. So the music was great. The initial shot, I just loved. That apocalypse now, ah the ships flying into the sunset, but instead of being helicopters, they were X-wings. It was absolutely beautiful. We saw this R2 unit, who at first I thought might be R2-D2, later found out that it's not.
00:06:33
Speaker
but going across the tarmac to the X-Wing, ah to the Razorcrest, and yes, the Mandalorian is back in a Razorcrest, that's just a great thing.

Trailer Highlights and Concerns

00:06:43
Speaker
We cut to the cockpit, and then we get the humor of Grogu. He's smashing the buttons, and Dad has to yell at him and say, don't touch the buttons. Then the trailer launches.
00:06:53
Speaker
We do see that new Razorcrest, which I love that it's got the same color scheme, that chrome and yellow as the N1 Naboo Starfighter.
00:07:04
Speaker
I do think in season three of The Mandalorian, it was a mistake for that to become his ship. After the original Mandalorian or the original Mandalorian, the original Razorcrest got destroyed. And so now I'm glad glad that he's back in another Razorcrest.
00:07:20
Speaker
That's really great. We saw him go to a planet with a city. At first, my thought was Coruscant. The vibe I'm picking up now is it's probably Nar Shaddaa.
00:07:31
Speaker
which is the kind of the main capital city of the hut empire, which makes sense for reasons we'll see in a few seconds. We see an Ardenian running a food store. That is the same race as Rio. The character Rio was in solo who was voiced by Jon Favreau. So that was great this time. Yes, you probably heard it right.
00:07:55
Speaker
Voiced by Martin Scorsese. So amazing. Martin Scorsese doing this voice. Then we start to get a breakdown of the villains. Now the villains that we see are a couple of huts and an imperial Warlord looks like on the snow planet. Here's where I start to get a little bit worried is as much as I love everything that has happened in Star Wars animation.
00:08:26
Speaker
I love Clone Wars. I think I love Rebels even more. I do feel like where the Mandalorian kind of started getting a little bit into trouble. as in terms of being a pop culture vehicle was when they started referring back to these characters from the animation, kind of the deep cut people that you had to follow. And, you know, you don't want your Star Wars to feel like homework, like you have to be up on everything Star Wars in order to enjoy a property. That's the trouble that Marvel ran into. I think they're remedying that. So I'm really hoping that in this movie, they're able to make these characters standalone. That people who aren't familiar with them, it'll be fine. They will just pick them up and assume that they are new characters. I do feel more confident in Jon Favreau's ability to pull that off than I have been in Dave Filoni's ability as a director.
00:09:25
Speaker
So just my editorial comment there. um What else did we see? We saw Sigourney Weaver. ah As the new Republic leader who is hiring Mando for a job, she hands him a Sabacc card with the silhouette of the target on there. It reminded me of those desert storm playing cards that we used to have the most valuable cards. targets as we were in Operation Desert Storm. We saw some scenes that were definitely set on a snow planet. And there's some conjecture that it might be Hoth, especially with that Super Bowl commercial. And it was definitely Tauntauns.
00:10:03
Speaker
Are Tauntauns native to Hoth or are Tauntauns more endemic of any snow planet in Star Wars? I don't know. We're going to find out. Maybe they're on Hoth.
00:10:13
Speaker
Maybe it's just another desert planet. Hey, we saw the first couple of shots in the trailer of um of The Force Awakens, and we assumed they were back on Tatooine, but no, it was Jakku.
00:10:24
Speaker
Well, who knows? We saw another character from Clone Wars Embo, the bounty hunter. And we saw another a character from Star Wars Rebels who is Zeb.
00:10:37
Speaker
So I think that's the whole laundry list so far of ones that we've seen before. Again, I'm hoping they can pull it off very well.

Nostalgia and Fan Delights

00:10:45
Speaker
I was overjoyed, and this was from the very first trailer.
00:10:48
Speaker
I love that there's more in Zelens, the little Babu Frick, hey, hey, characters. Those guys are great. And considering the Halcyon and the Star Wars Galactic Star Cruiser was created and first captained by an Anselin, I am all for it.
00:11:05
Speaker
One other little detail that I really, really loved is we see some monsters. We see some action with some monsters and the some fighting. It turns out that the monsters that they are fighting are the ones that we saw on the original hollow chest, the Djarik table in Star Wars in 1977. So we're finally seeing these things, not as hologram, but in real life, which I love.
00:11:32
Speaker
There was one really cool Easter egg when we first saw that creature and it's breaking out through a door. There is a sign above that door in Orabesh And I had to pause it to make it off and to read the Oribesh because it was very thin and kind of squishy. But what that said in Oribesh was Weathers, Apollo.
00:11:53
Speaker
So definitely a nod to Carl Weathers, the late, great Carl Weathers. And of course, the character that made him famous, Apollo Creed in Rocky. I just finished rewatching the episode, The Siege, which we'll talk about in a couple of weeks here.
00:12:12
Speaker
And it was so great to see Carl Weathers, who not only starred in that episode, but directed it as well. So we will miss Carl Weathers in the Star Wars universe. He was great.

Closing Remarks and Call to Action

00:12:23
Speaker
The last final detail that I will mention is Grogu in his speed pram, I'm going to call it. So the Mandalorian says, what are you waiting for?
00:12:35
Speaker
he force jumps into this pram and then takes off. at rocket speed and I think that that's just gonna be really fun. So, very much looking forward to this movie. I'm sure you are too.
00:12:48
Speaker
That's it for this week. We will be back with Ben and with Phil next week to get back into the rewatch. Until then, please like us, give us the big five star review. That's what helps the algorithm point us to more Star Wars fans and I really, really appreciate that.
00:13:05
Speaker
Or write a review for us, that helps us even more. Tell all your friends. We'll see you soon. May the force be with you until then. Bye-bye. Aren't you a little short for
