Applying the 80-20 Rule to Pottery
00:00:39
Speaker
Let's get started. What is up, everybody? This is Nick Torres here. And on this episode of Shaping Your Pottery, I'm going to be talking about how to use the 80-20 rule to help you find your own unique voice with your pottery.
Nick's Pottery Journey
00:00:54
Speaker
So a while back when I was in, I was going to be a senior in high school. This was the summer where I had injured my knee and I couldn't do anything all summer. But during that summer, I did two things. One was watch a buttload of YouTube videos about pottery. And I just did that pretty much every single day. And the other thing was I read a lot of books. I read books about business and marketing and mindset. And I just did a lot of that stuff.
00:01:23
Speaker
during that time.
Understanding the 80-20 Principle
00:01:25
Speaker
And one of the books that I read was called the 80-20 Principle by Richard Koch. I'm blanking on the name a little bit, but it's called the 80-20 Principle or the 80-20 Rule. And basically what that states is so the 20 percent of things that you are doing will lead to the 80 percent of results.
Identifying Best-Selling Pieces
00:01:43
Speaker
And it's super, super true with our pottery. You see, I don't know about you, but I'm sure that most of you have
00:01:53
Speaker
One thing that you know sells really, really well. You know, it sells really well. It resonates with people really well. You know, every single time you go out to farmer's markets or you post it online, people love that thing that you are making. They love that thing that you are making. You're able to make sales with your pottery. And, but the problem is you are getting a little bit bored with making that one thing over and over again.
00:02:20
Speaker
But that's a good thing. That's really a good thing because now you know that people like that thing.
Balancing Production and Creativity
00:02:27
Speaker
And my advice to you is to keep making that one thing. Keep making that one thing because you know that it is selling well. You know that is what's gonna pay your bills. It's gonna help you keep doing pottery longer. So keep doing that thing. If it's not broke, why stop it? So keep doing that one thing or that two things that you know are selling really, really well.
00:02:51
Speaker
Keep doing those things. That is the 80% of time that you should be focusing your time on, is making those pots that you know sell well. Because you know they sell well, so why would you stop it? Why would you stop that cash flow from coming in? So keep doing those things that you know are selling really well. I know it's boring, but if you can get through that boring middle, then this is where your voice is truly gonna start coming up.
Optimizing Time for Success and Experimentation
00:03:21
Speaker
Because all too often, people get, they get going when they get something that is selling, they find their voice with one thing, but then they get bored of it. They get bored of them and then they look for that next shiny object that they wanna create. But I'm here to tell you that you need to keep making that one or two things that you know are selling really, really well. Where every single time you post online, every time you go to a farmer's market, it sells out just like that. So now,
00:03:50
Speaker
But why should you focus on that thing? Because now it's important to start focusing on the 80-20 rule. So 80% of the time, you're gonna be working on that one thing that you know sells really, really well.
00:04:02
Speaker
The other 20% of the time, you're gonna be focusing on experimenting. You're gonna be experimenting with things that you know that you want to start making with
Adjusting the 80-20 Balance
00:04:14
Speaker
your partner. This is where your voice can start coming to life during that 20% of time where you are experimenting. So 80% of the time you're focusing on that one to two things that you know are selling really well. The other 20% of the time you are focusing on experimenting and making your voice truly come to life.
00:04:33
Speaker
but it doesn't just have to be 80-20. So the equation could be different for everyone. So if you're somebody right now who truly does not enjoy what you are making, that is selling, that you know that other people are resonating, you just don't wanna do that anymore. So maybe instead of
00:04:54
Speaker
doing that 80% of the time, flip it around. So instead of doing that 80% of the time, you're doing that 20% of the time that you know what does well. And the 80% of the time, you are experimenting with your part. You are doing things to make a new voice come to life. But at the opposite, and you can also do
00:05:14
Speaker
where you will condense it. So instead of you doing 80% of the time, you're doing 60% of the time where you are focusing on the thing that you know so well and the other 40% of the time is the time for you to experiment. It could also be 70, 30 or 90, 10, whatever it is that is going to help you the most with this.
Transitioning Styles Smoothly
00:05:34
Speaker
That 20% of the time that you are experimenting
00:05:38
Speaker
That is where you're going to find a new voice, but don't stop your old voice right away, because if you stop it right away, then one, people are kind of going to get a little bit confused about what happened to the other stuff you were making. I like that stuff. I wanted one of those things. And, you know, you're going to get a bunch of messages. So it's good to keep doing those things that you know are selling well. So if you have to maybe get somebody else to help you with that so that it's a little bit easier on you. But don't just get rid of that right away.
00:06:08
Speaker
to make it a slow transition. So right now you're focusing on that 80% of the time, 80-20 of doing 80% of work that you know is selling well and you're doing 20% of the experiments. And eventually it's gonna go from 80-20 to 70-30 to 60-40 to 50-50 to 60-40 again. And it's just gonna flip flop.
00:06:32
Speaker
And then then you can completely get rid of that thing that you are doing. But keep doing that thing because you know it is selling well. And now you have other time to do you have more time to experiment with the other things. So, again, if you have something that you know sells well right now, keep doing that one or two things, but also make 20 percent of the time to experiment. I hope this brought you some value and I'll see you guys next time.
