Pros and Cons of Community Pottery Studios

00:00:43
Speaker
What is up, Shaping Nation? This is Nick Torres here. And on this episode of Shaping Your Pottery, I'm going to be talking about the pros and cons of having a home studio or joining a community studio. So to start out, let's start with the community studio. So the community studio pros are the first one is you have all the resources at your hand.
00:01:11
Speaker
Whenever you go to the community studio, you're more or less going to have lots of resources that you can use. Let's say you want to throw on the wheel. You can throw on the wheel. If you want to hand build, you can hand build because there's going to be resources for that. You're going to have resources to glaze. You're going to have resources to use to kiln. You're going to have some space to put your pottery
00:01:36
Speaker
You're going to be able to have all these different resources that you can use. And that is a really, really, really big pro to having to join a community studio. The second one second pro to joining a community studio.
00:01:52
Speaker
is you get to chat with other potters as well. Chatting with other potters is probably one of the best things that you can do to not only gain new ideas but also it's going to help you with your growth. It's going to help you speed up significantly more.
00:02:10
Speaker
And not only that, everybody's helping each other and you can just chat about pottery whenever you want. You know, if you have a question, go ask it. If you see somebody doing something that you like, try to model it. It doesn't matter. In that community space, everybody is making pottery, and that means it makes it so much easier to come up with new ideas, which brings me to my third pro.
00:02:33
Speaker
which is you can grow very, very quickly because you are around other potters that are making and they are also challenging themselves. They want to grow. You want to grow. You are also going to grow because you are just simply in that environment of people making and people are going to be helping each other. You're going to get new ideas. Like I said, you're going to grow very, very quickly. Your skills are going to grow a lot more. You're going to find your style a lot easier.
00:03:01
Speaker
And it's just an overall easier way to grow your pottery just by simply being in that environment. So to recap a little bit.
00:03:10
Speaker
The pros so far have been you have all the resources at your hand by joining Community Studio. You can chat with other potters and you can grow very, very quickly. The fourth pro to joining Community Studio is you can get help and what you are making. More or less, the instructors there or the people that are running it, they're going to know what your problem is. So let's say you have a crack on your handles that you make for your mug.
00:03:39
Speaker
ask the instructors or the people that are running the studio ask what why is this cracking? What do you think I should do to help me prevent this cracking? And more or less, they're probably going to know what what you are doing wrong, and they're probably to tell you as well because they've been through it themselves.
00:03:56
Speaker
And they're going to tell you and you're going to be able to find new ways to fix your problems or get your questions answered just by simply being in that community studio, which is a really, really big plus. That's also going to help you grow very, very quickly.
00:04:11
Speaker
So finally, the last pro is that it's very easy to get started. You know, you don't need any resources because all the resources are there at the community studio. It's very easy to get started. If you want to start throwing on the wheel, you can start throwing on the wheel very, very easily.
00:04:28
Speaker
If you want to start handboating, you can do that as well. You can also play around with glazes. It's very, very easy to get started by joining a community pottery studio. So to recap on the pros. So number one is how you have all the resources at your disposal. You have a kiln, glazes, wheels, handboating stuff, paint, whatever it is, you have all the resources at your disposal.
00:04:57
Speaker
Number two is that you can chat with other potters. This is very, very big because now you can come up with new ideas and you grow very, very quickly, which is our third pro is you can grow very, very quickly by being in a community studio, by being around other potters, being around all these different people that are making as well.
00:05:17
Speaker
The fourth pro is that you can get help on whatever it is that you are making. So if you're having if you have maybe a block, you can ask for help. And if you have a struggle, maybe you have like cracking, you can get help. And the fifth pro is that it is very, very easy to get started.

Pros and Cons of Home Pottery Studios

00:05:37
Speaker
So let's hop into the cons of a community studio. So the con is you have to pay for space, right? They're not. It is a business. So you have to pay for space. It's usually about maybe a hundred or a couple hundred a month to have a wheel and have everything at your disposal.
00:05:57
Speaker
The second con is, it is limited in space. You can't have the whole community pottery studio to yourself. You get a limited space because it has to be for everyone. You get limited space so if you make more than what you are actually making, you might have to pay more for that space. The third con is,
00:06:19
Speaker
You have to wait for the owners to fire the kiln. You can't just fire it whenever you want because it's not your kiln and other people have pottery as well that need to be fired. So you have to wait for the owners to fire the kiln. So sometimes it could take a little bit to get your pottery back and to glaze it to be fired again. So it could take a little bit of time to actually fire the kiln.
00:06:44
Speaker
And then the fourth con is you actually have to deal with people messing with your pots because, you know, there is limited space for what people are trying to make and they want to get their pots fired faster. So people may try to start moving pots around and they might nudge something and it might break what you made. And you do have to deal with all the different people that are walking in and out of that community pottery studio.
00:07:10
Speaker
It's just one of the cons you have to deal with. So the cons so far is that you have to pay for the space. There is limited space in the community space for being able to hold your pottery. You have to wait for the kill in the fire and you have to deal with other people messing with your pottery. The fifth con is you might have to drive a little ways to actually go out and do the community studio.
00:07:34
Speaker
It's just it's just what it is. It's a set space and you if you want all those resources, you're going to have to drive for it. That's just what it is. So let's get into the pros of owning a home studio. So pro number one is you can fire pottery whenever you want, which is a really, really big thing, because if you are making a lot of things all at once, you can really start testing things out very, very quickly, see if you like it or not.
00:08:03
Speaker
by firing, firing pretty much whenever you want. The second pro is you have the space all to yourself, right? You have more space for yourself. You can have as many things as you want in your space as long as it doesn't fill up too much. But pretty much you can make a lot more pots because you have your own space. The third fourth step
00:08:30
Speaker
Third step, sorry, is to work, is that you get to work at your own pace. You know, like there might be times in a community studio where it's like going on a holiday or you know, you might be going on a holiday or you can't go back to the community studio for a while. So you might have to be rushing on what you're making and you don't get to work at your own pace. With your home studio, you do get to work at your own pace. You can, if you want to wake up,
00:08:57
Speaker
and go make part right away, you can do that. If you want to make party late in the day, you can do that. Right with community studio, it has limited hours, so you can't really work at your own pace that much all the time.
00:09:10
Speaker
So the fourth thing, fourth pro is you don't have to worry about other people messing with your pottery. I know. I said earlier for the community that part of the reason why community works so well is because you could chat with other potters. But at the same time, if people start messing with your pottery, that's when it gets really annoying. So that's a really big pro to having your own space, your own home studio is you don't have to worry about other people.
00:09:38
Speaker
And then the sixth pro is that you don't have to drive anywhere, depending on where your pottery studio may be at. You probably won't have to drive maybe more than five minutes, maximum, probably. But for the most part, if it's a home studio, it's going to be at your home. You don't have to drive really anywhere. And you could just wake up, get some coffee and then just go right to work.
00:10:03
Speaker
And then it's also easier to mess up because if you mess up, you can always recycle later. So here's a recap on the pros. You can fire whenever you want. You have a space to yourself, which means more space for yourself. You can work at your own pace.
00:10:18
Speaker
And you don't have to worry about people messing with your pottery. You don't have to drive and easier to mess up. So now let's go into the cons of owning a home studio. So the cons is you have to pay for all the equipment yourself, and that can get pretty, pretty taxing. So let's say you have a kiln. It's going to be like a couple of thousand dollars. A wheel can be a couple of thousand dollars if it's brand new.
00:10:41
Speaker
And whatever else you need, it's gonna be kind of a lot. And you need space, which is a second con to owning your own home studios that you need space in order to make this work. It has to be in a really well-ventilated area, like your garage or basement. And some people don't have these things in their house. So it's very hard to get the space sometimes.
00:11:08
Speaker
which is the third con is that it can take a while to actually fully set up your home studio. Like you may have a wheel, but that may be it, but you don't have a kiln or anything because you don't have the space for it, which is a really big con is that you need the space in order to make this home studio work and you have to pay for all the equipment. The recap on the con is you have to pay for all the equipment. You need space and it can take time to set up.

Making the Right Choice: Personal Circumstances and Goals

00:11:34
Speaker
So those are both the pros and the cons to owning a home studio versus a community studio. There are many different things that you could do. Like my favorite for the community studio is that you can chat with other partners. That is huge and your growth is going to be so much faster compared to somebody that is going and has their own home studio.
00:11:54
Speaker
But at the end of the day, it's what matters and what works best for you at this moment. Right. You may be living in this place where you don't have a lot of space, so it might be a better idea to go out and join a community studio or maybe, you know, find somebody else that has a pottery pottery little little pottery studio.
00:12:14
Speaker
That might be better for you, but if you have the space and maybe the resources, the money, right, it might be better for you to start off your own home studio and you're thinking about going full time, it's probably better to go a home studio rather than to a community studio. That way you're not paying monthly for the community studio. I hope you guys enjoyed this episode and I'll see you guys in the next one.
