Sounders Highlights and Player Comebacks

00:00:00
Speaker
And Lindsay back to Leo Chiu. Rudia top of the box evades freshman Westwood 25 yards and whips the ball! Wonderful goal by Rui Diaz! Back into the lineup and that's what the Sounders have missed!
00:00:23
Speaker
What's going on, everybody? Welcome in to episode four of Lobbying Scorchers. This is Ari Lilianwall coming to you live from my basement. Got producer Noah here with me. Noah, say what's up to the people.
00:00:38
Speaker
I hope you all are doing well. Predictions. We made them. They somewhat came true. I think they actually did somewhat come true. Yeah, we're going to be doing some reaction to Seattle Sounders 3-3 draw in Charlotte last night. And it was chaos and anarchy, you know, for as uneventful as the 0-0 against Portland was.
00:01:02
Speaker
This game, it was definitely entertaining. And it's given me a lot to think about and talk about. So however sour the final result may have been for Seattle, this was definitely not a boring game. Definitely not a boring game. Bangers. Got a lot to get to. A lot of bangers. A lot of bangers in this game and a ton of bangers throughout MLS last night.
00:01:30
Speaker
I'm going to get to that later. But first, I'm just going to lay down what my rapid reaction was coming off 3-3 in Charlotte. First of all, this moves Seattle to 8-6 and 4, 28 points.
00:01:49
Speaker
Second in the West still second in the West despite everything that's been going on the last few weeks It kind of feels like no one else in the West wants to make a move even st. Louis played earlier today and they had a chance to create a little bit of distance between them in Seattle and they tied the LA Galaxy 1-1 at home, so An unfortunate draw for them too and the West is wide open and it's still still all in front of this team but
00:02:17
Speaker
We got to talk about this game. We got to talk about this game. This game was crazy. The attacking performance in this game was good. Very, very good. Sharp. Three goals, 1.4 XG, according to Opta, which is not an incredible number, but for a cross-conference road game across the country, that's solid. And they got three goals.
00:02:44
Speaker
Then that's all you can ask in a game like this, a road game where you have to travel across the country. And Seattle took their chances. So we're going to talk about that aspect of it first, because I think that's important. Christian rolled on back in the starting 11. Very good. It's amazing what happens when you put him back in the lineup. 11 minutes into the game, he scores a goal.
00:03:08
Speaker
Comes off the bench against Portland in his first appearance, creates the best chance of the game immediately, 11 minutes into his first start, scores a goal. Goal comes off a set piece, which has been a struggle for this team in recent weeks. And Christian enrolled on and Jackson Reagan executed that perfectly. It was really bad defending by Charlotte, and I'm going to talk about that.
00:03:30
Speaker
give Jackson Reagan and Christian Rolland credit for the execution on that play. Jackson Reagan's taken that free kick from well behind the midfield line, and he put that right on a dime. And that's a part of his game, that long passing. He's really good at that. I think that's partially why he got the starting job over Javier Iaga, who's also very good at that. But Jackson Reagan has that attribute too, and he's a little bit sounder in defense.
00:04:00
Speaker
The only reason that the poor marking by Charlotte mattered in that situation is because Jackson Reagan hit a perfect ball. Good touch by Christian to control it, player of his quality. You like his chances at finishing that every time. Good goal. And at that point, it's a deserved 1-0. So for the first 10 or so minutes of this game, Seattle looks like the home team.
00:04:22
Speaker
Goal comes off a set piece, but based on the control they had over the game and the chances they were generating early, that was a deserved 1-0 and it wasn't against the run of play. Raul Rui-Diaz, very good. Very, very good. Sharp. It's amazing what happens when you put him back in the lineup. Rui-Diaz had two chances in those opening 10 minutes that I was talking about, both of which were saved, but both of which are exactly the types of chances that he needs to be getting.
00:04:52
Speaker
His movement, combination play, very good, very sharp. Both of those chances are honestly normally ones that I expect him to finish. But the point is for this offense to operate at the level that it's capable of and that we saw it operate earlier in the season, he needs to be getting in those spots as much as possible. And if you give him enough of those looks, he's one of the most efficient finishers in the league. And we saw that in this game.
00:05:19
Speaker
Rui Diaz's first goal that made it 2-1. Come on now. Galazzo. Great finish.

Match Analysis and Tactical Breakdown

00:05:28
Speaker
The craziest thing about that shot is that not only is he way outside the box, but his momentum is taking him away from the goal. It doesn't even look like a dangerous situation. But that's how he gets you. That's how he gets you. Lows you into that false sense of security.
00:05:48
Speaker
There's still not many players in the league that you can name that that can hit that with the regularity that he does Charlotte Charlotte doesn't close them out They're giving him that space because they're thinking from that distance that far away from goal Even if he shoots it, it's an extremely low percentage shot Not for him fade away cash money ruthless ridiculous highlight one of the only guys in the league who can take that shot and it's actually a good look and
00:06:18
Speaker
His second goal, 70th minute. Very good, great team goal. That happened because Seattle had extended possession in the attacking third. They're putting Charlotte under pressure. Jau Paulo pumped in like five crosses in a row in that sequence. They all got recycled. On the play where they, on the sequence where they scored, Rui Diaz hits a switch to Christian. He gets it to JP in space. JP and Rui Diaz time that up perfectly. JP whips in the pinpoint ball to the far post.
00:06:48
Speaker
Charlotte doesn't mark him at the far post for whatever reason. But it's a great run, great movement in the box by Rui Diaz. And that one's as easy as it gets for him. He does not miss those very often. And if you're looking for a reason for optimism from this game, that's it right there. You know, maybe you're feeling a little bit down about the blown leads, dropping points.
00:07:12
Speaker
When Rudy Diaz is fit and informed, he's game changer. And he looked like himself in this game. He's fit, playing like that. His team will be able to get enough results to be in the mix for home playoff games. I got no doubt about that. It's just about keeping them on the field. That's it. It's about keeping them on the field. Seattle needed a game like this in attack. Had to have one like this. Then had a multi goal game in their last 11 MLS games.
00:07:39
Speaker
Not going to win very many games like that with how much they've been struggling on offense. Very encouraging to see them put together in attacking performance like this. I think it's fair to say that. So that's the good. Those are the positives. Very good attacking performance. Three goals in a cross-conference road game. That's good. That's good.
00:08:01
Speaker
We've got to talk about the defense because for as good as Seattle looked an attack in this game They should have won this game. They should have won this game and They didn't because they blew the lead three separate times had leads of 1 0 2 1 and 3 2 Couldn't hold it any of those three times So
00:08:22
Speaker
We have to talk about why that happened, unfortunately. So I'm just going to, I guess, break down the Charlotte goals now and everything went wrong there. There's a fair amount. Okay. Charlotte's first goal when they were down one zero.
00:08:37
Speaker
There's a lot of talk about this play. It's a pretty insane play by Carol Sudersky to keep that ball in bounds. I'll say that you got to give him credit. It's a ball over the top that looks like it's going over the end line for a goal kick. And he runs it down and it was an acrobatic play. He volleyed it to himself over Yamar to keep it in bounds and then managed to hit Jalen Lindsay.
00:09:02
Speaker
I thought that it was out of bounds when I saw it live, and I saw some takes on the timeline adamantly contending that it was out of bounds. What happened was Seattle's defenders all thought it was going out of bounds, so they didn't contest the play the way they needed to. You have to play through the whistle. Until you hear a whistle, you assume that ball is in play every time.
00:09:23
Speaker
You don't let up and wait for the call, put your hand up, look at the AR, Yeymar's got his hand up, he's looking for the call. And then there's no one marking Jaylen Lindsay at the far post either. Alex rolled on, misses the header, but Lindsay should have been marked right there. Seattle had four guys in the box to Charlotte's two who were standing in front of goal. So I don't really know or care who
00:09:47
Speaker
was supposed to be marking him. It's just got to be somebody. So great play by Sederky for sure. Give him credit. But that's also a defensive breakdown. But more importantly than that, that play happened because of what happened to the game state after Seattle scored.
00:10:07
Speaker
When you have a one goal lead on the road, which Seattle did three times in this game, you need to do two things. Number one, you got to be able to absorb pressure. The other team is going to be coming at you. They're playing at home. They need to equalize. So you need to be strong with your defending in the box. You need to win your headers. You need to be on it with your marking, all that stuff.
00:10:31
Speaker
More importantly, and this is what I think Seattle struggles with sometimes you need to be able to keep the ball. People say that possession is meaningless and a lot of the times that's true. It doesn't always tell you the full story. But in this situation up one goal on the road possession is critical.
00:10:51
Speaker
You have to be able to knock the ball around you have to be able to eat clock Do whatever you can to keep it from becoming a track meet when you're playing as the road team can't be in a track meet Can't be needlessly conceding possession when you have it
00:11:06
Speaker
After Seattle's first goal, they pretty much lost control of the game. The game state turned into Charlotte just putting Seattle under waves of pressure, getting out in transition, and Seattle couldn't keep the ball when they had it. And that doesn't mean that you go up a goal and you close up shop and don't try and score the second goal if you can. That's not what I'm saying. You just have to be smart about it. Pick your spots. And you just can't let the game be that open
00:11:35
Speaker
when you're up a goal on the road. When you have the opportunities, you have to keep the ball, calm it down. That game was too open for having a one goal lead. And that's why that goal happened. Second goal, Ashley Westwood.
00:11:52
Speaker
After Rui Diaz scored Seattle's second goal, the banger, the number one task they needed to do was get that match to halftime, 2-1. And they actually managed to do that. They got it to halftime at 2-1. But then they come out in the second half, and the game, it's like the 2005 Phoenix Suns, seven seconds or less, back and forth, up and down, everybody's Steph Curry out there.
00:12:17
Speaker
And in the 51st minute, just five minutes after the second half kicks off, at a time when Seattle needed to be slowing it down, Charlotte wins the ball, breaks out on a counter, entire defense is scrambling on its heels, and they give up the equalizer. It's a great finish by Westwood. Nothing Stephen Fry could have done to stop that shot. But that happened because they lost control of the game state.
00:12:43
Speaker
And that's what happened on all three goals, really. But you saw it on both these goals when they equalized from 1-0 to 1-1 and 2-1 to 2-2. They need to be able to just calm down in that situation. I think that's something that happens with this team sometimes is just that they get too pumped up. They're vibing. They're feeling themselves. They want to just let it rip and take it to the other team and rack up more goals. That's what you should do when you're playing at home. Sometimes,
00:13:11
Speaker
When you're on the road, you just need to chill, take a step back, knock the ball around, manage the game. It's not about bunkering. It's not about playing troll ball. It's about managing the game. Okay. Third goal. Same idea. When it's three, two in the 89th minute.
00:13:31
Speaker
You're going to be under pressure. It's a very common scenario in soccer where one team is holding a late lead absorbing, absorbing, absorbing. A lot of people question Schmetz's subs in this game, both the timing and the personnel. I mean, it's possible to say what would have happened if that had been timed differently or if he had shuffled it a little bit differently.
00:13:53
Speaker
That goal happened because Charlotte was frantically trying to get a late goal. Seattle wasn't able to keep the ball away from them for any meaningful portion of time. And then on that specific play, the line of confrontation from the midfield was too deep. That dude had all the space in the world to whip the ball in. And their guy hits a great header. You got to give him that one, too. That shot wasn't stoppable. But it's the same thing that I've been saying. With better game management,
00:14:23
Speaker
and higher line of confrontation, maybe you prevent that chance from even happening. So in the end, it's 3-3 road point, but it's another draw that kind of feels like a loss and everyone's all pissed off because you had to lead three times, couldn't hold it for any of them.
00:14:41
Speaker
unfortunate. But look, as far as the attacking side, feel free to be encouraged about that if you need if you need some source of optimism, I give you permission. They played well in attack. So that's something you can hang your hat on if you want.
00:15:02
Speaker
It's up to you how much stock you put in that. I saw at least one take that Charlotte FC vastly outplayed Seattle. I have no idea how you could watch that game and have that takeaway. But just to break it down, Charlotte FC was clowning in this game. As poor as Seattle was on defense and as poorly as they managed this game at times,
00:15:27
Speaker
Charlotte FC was worse because they had this game at home. First of all, they badly mismanaged the game state after kickoff, similar to how Seattle did at other points in the game. Like I said, Seattle looked like the home team for the first 10 minutes of the game until Christian scored.
00:15:44
Speaker
When you're the home team, you're the ones who need to be on the front foot and setting the tone. That's your number one task for the opening 10, 15 minutes of every single home game. Charlotte not only didn't do that, but they let Seattle do that and they got bammed on 10 minutes into the game. Their defense on the first goal that Christian scored was questionable. Jackson Reagan is so far away from goal when he takes that set piece. He's in his own end.
00:16:14
Speaker
For him to be able to split two defenders with that pass and Christian to be able to take the ball down without it being contested, that's like stealing. It's crazy to me that a pass from that spot in Seattle's end can make it into the box uncontested.
00:16:29
Speaker
on ruey Diaz's goal his first one i guarantee you that when they were grinding their film for this game their cultures told them if number nine gets the ball in exactly that area just close him down he can shoot from there he will shoot from there and if you don't contest the shot he can make it he'll make it at a
00:16:47
Speaker
a lot higher percentage than most. So someone needed to at least run at Rui Diaz there and try and jump in front of him. Maybe you block it. Maybe you get in his vision just enough and make some missed the shot. You got to at least try. You might still make it, but you have to at least try to close them out. You can't let them take it uncontested even from that spot on the field.
00:17:09
Speaker
And on the last goal, I mean, if you can't let Rui Diaz rip one uncontested from 20 yards out, you certainly can't leave him unmarked at the far post right in front of goal. He's going to cash that every time. So if I was a Charlotte fan, I'd be pretty tilted at how that game went, honestly, just as much as Seattle people are tilted about how it went.
00:17:32
Speaker
You're at home, you need a win. A home draw is not especially a good result for them at this point in the season. You concede three times and yeah, they showed some good character and Moxie to come back all three times. I'll give them that. But both of the first two times they equalized, they had all the momentum to try and go take the lead and put themselves into position to win. And instead they conceded both times and had to scramble to come back. So
00:17:57
Speaker
Overall it was definitely an entertaining game fun to watch was not boring But both these teams honestly mismanage it pretty severely I would say and as such Point of Peace was a fair result So those are just my quick hitter takes on the game next up
00:18:19
Speaker
LAFC, and I'm not going to spend too much time previewing you that. We're going to do a preview show on that next week. We're going to have our first ever guest planning on lining up my friend Mark Kastner from Sound Art Hard to come on here. And we're going to talk some big picture stuff about the team and the season and the LAFC game more specifically. And we also just famously did a whole episode on LAFC that we all enjoyed. We can't give them too much clout here. No.
00:18:46
Speaker
But I mean, the one thing I will say is that ordinarily LFC away is not a game that I would feel particularly great about. Them in the union have been the best home teams in the league the last couple of years. Usually that's a hold on for dear life and try to get out of there with a point type of situation. But we just talked about it on the CCL recap episode.
00:19:08
Speaker
LFC looks like they're about to go through it long grueling intense CCL run which they lost famously and now they have Ridiculous fixture congestion and you might be starting to see it happen I'm gonna wait to call it, but they lost 4-0 to the dynamo yesterday beautiful 4-0 to the Houston dynamo

Opportunities in the Western Conference

00:19:27
Speaker
Now, Houston's a tough place to play no matter what their team is like. We talked about that before. Oh, I mean, I see that and that that jumps off the page. That's a banning. That's a banning. The point is this is about as vulnerable as you could ever help to catch LFC. So we'll talk about that in more detail next week. But that matchup is suddenly a lot more intriguing for from a Seattle perspective than I think it ordinarily would be. I got to hit a couple of
00:19:56
Speaker
corrections from the messy episode. I've been trying to be good about listening to these back because it's a good way to figure out what works, what doesn't, and also just to check myself, make sure my intakes aren't wrong or anything, or I don't have wrong info. And listening back to the messy episode,
00:20:17
Speaker
I had a couple things wrong when I was talking about the MLS roster rules and you know, Noah said that I shouldn't admit it. But I got to take accountability. You know, I think it's important to be accurate. You got to be accurate. And if you mess something up, just correct it. So that's what I'm just going to do real quick.
00:20:36
Speaker
And it's all convoluted MLS roster rule stuff that people might not even know about or care about, but I want to be accurate. So the first one was just when I was talking about the U-22 initiative, I accidentally said that
00:20:53
Speaker
The U-22 signings have to be under 22. It's 22 and under, so that was just a misspeak, but U-22 players can be 22 and under. An easy mixup. Easy mixup, but I still wanted to correct it. Also, when I was talking about the homegrown rules,
00:21:11
Speaker
I said that Jordan Morris doesn't count against the salary cap. And when I was listening to that back, I realized I forgot that there was some convoluted rule change with that, where I had totally forgotten that they did this. But the way it works now is that
00:21:30
Speaker
They created senior roster slots and supplemental roster slots. So if you're a homegrown player, but you still take up a senior roster slot, which is one through 20, you do count against the salary cap. So Jordan Morris is a senior roster spot, so he does count against the cab now, even though he's homegrown.
00:21:51
Speaker
And then it's like roster spots 21 through 28 are the supplemental ones. And that's where you have like RBW, Obed, Atencio, Soda Kitty Hara, all those guys. Those are supplemental roster spots, homegrowns that don't count against a salary cap.
00:22:07
Speaker
The point I was making still stands, which is that homegrown players are a hack against the salary cap. But Jordan Morris technically as a player with a senior roster spot does count against the cap as a homegrown. I'm pretty sure that's right.
00:22:23
Speaker
If I still mess that up and you have a correction to the correction, feel free to hit me with it. I mean, I work for the league website and I still don't understand these goddamn rules. It's so hard to get these down. Believe it or not, they're made up.
00:22:44
Speaker
I should know all that stuff off the top of my head, but I'll be honest, I just don't. All right, I'm glad we got that out of the way. I'm going to hopefully keep the correction segment to a minimum, but if I listen back and I notice them, I'm always going to try and make sure that I got everything accurate.
00:23:05
Speaker
I think the only other thing I wanted to hit was just one other storyline from around match day 18 last night.

MLS Highlights and Corrections

00:23:16
Speaker
I mean, it's just all around great stuff. This this might have been the most bangers I've ever seen in one slate of matches. Every single goal in Charlotte Seattle was a good goal. They were all class goals. But I mean, I'll just go down the list.

Lucas Zelleray on, had the best of him. 60-yard bomb in second half stoppage time to walk it off against the fire. Ridiculous goal. If you haven't seen the highlight, go look that up. You see like one of those every year or two maybe where the guy notices the keeper is off his line and just drops a bomb on him.
00:24:54
Speaker
Zell Ryan did it to Spencer Richie. He was off his line and he got him with that one. Phenomenal goal. I think that's probably the one out of all of these that's going to win goal the match day, although they all have a case. Rudy Diaz has a case. I think he's going to be a nominee.
00:25:08
Speaker
Lorenzo Insinie hit one for Toronto FC against Nashville. Phenomenal strike. He lined one up from the left side, outside the box. Really nice curler. Galazzo. Franco Escobar got one for Houston against LA FC. Another one outside the box. He volleyed it. No chance for the goalkeeper. Sports center type 10 type of stuff. Miguel Trocco hit one for the Quakes against the Philly Union. Similar to that, outside the box banger.
00:25:36
Speaker
Lucio Acosta had a crazy one for FC Cincinnati. He hit a lobbed chip from a ridiculous angle. He's all the way on the left side of the box and he chipped the keeper from right inside the left side of the 18. That might have been the highest degree of difficulty on all of them. And then even earlier today, Nicholas Giacchini for St. Louis City had a sick one against the galaxy where he redirected across with the
00:26:00
Speaker
defender draped all over him he just stuck his leg out got a perfect lofted redirection maybe a little lucky but it looked really cool so just really awesome highlights shows what we were talking about on the last episode with the quality that you really see in this league great stuff so I think that's that's the main thing I wanted to highlight Noah did you have some some questions you wanted to dish to close it out here
00:26:26
Speaker
Absolutely. Well, first starting off, I need to know what your goal of the week is.
00:26:31
Speaker
I think it's gotta be zella ryan like yeah anytime there's a one from distance like that he's so far away and the fact that it was second half stoppage time to walk it off against the fire the fire just can't catch a break they they're famous for conceding late goals the chicago fire basically all their games are what seattle did against charlotte like it's like if they have a lead that's not even a one goal lead for the chicago fire is meaningless it doesn't matter like they're gonna give it up
00:27:01
Speaker
And they were tied in this instance, but gave up the game winner. They're just the king of giving up late goals. So the timing of it, but also just just a long range stunner like that, where they line it up all the way from midfield. Those are pretty rare. And so I think you got to give it to that one, both for the novelty of the highway and the timing of it.
00:27:24
Speaker
Yeah, I saw it was like 60 plus yards out third longest in MLS history. Yeah, pretty sick sick. I agree. I think that was mine. I also I mean, this is a simple statement, but Raoul is back. Yeah.
00:28:00
Speaker
Christian and Raoul haven't been starting this entire stretch where the team hasn't been scoring. The first game that they're both starting, they both score. Raoul scores twice and the team gets three goals. That's not a coincidence. That's not a coincidence. So yeah, Raoul is back and Christian is back, which is
00:28:04
Speaker
in a big way.
00:28:16
Speaker
equally important, I think for how this offense runs. But I mean, yeah, you saw what a difference those two guys make in this game that you go from not having a multi goal game for 11 games to you hang three on Charlotte and look very good on offense. So that's kind of how it works sometimes.
00:28:34
Speaker
You talked a little bit about, I mean, we've got, you know, sounders have got personnel back. Now it just comes down to tactics. Do you think that maybe in some kind of way it was like, sigh, we're starting Raoul and we're starting Raoul Bahn. Maybe the tactics kind of just were a little bit shaky or was that just simply like a, another thing you had referenced, which was,
00:28:59
Speaker
They just got excited. That's kind of what it feels like. I mean, don't you think that that's kind of been a thing with the Sounders for a while? Like, especially in road. It's like the team is like go, go, go all the time. And they've shown like in Champions League last year, they were absolutely lights out at that game management stuff that that I talked about on this episode.
00:29:26
Speaker
That's part of the reason they won Champions League is because they went on these really hard road trips to Mexico, and they put in professional performances. They managed the game when they had to. They were good in possession and keeping long spells of possession when they needed to. And it feels like sometimes in their MLS games, especially in this one, for the stretches of the game where they needed to shift their tactics in that way,
00:29:56
Speaker
They didn't do it, and it was still just 2005 Phoenix Suns. And that's just not the game state that you want when you're on the road and up a goal. You need to manage it, and they didn't do that in this game. Last but not least, I saw a lot of hate online that I thought it wasn't necessarily unfair, but it definitely wasn't completely fair and relevant.

There was just a lot of hate around Obed and his performance. It wasn't his best, obviously. But I don't know. What's your take on that?
00:30:26
Speaker
Yeah, well, I think it is fair to ask if it was the right call to start him in this game just because he had just been at the U20 World Cup. He hadn't been with the team for a few weeks. So throwing him, he just got back to the team, throwing him into starting an MLS match right there. I think a lot of people were questioning whether that was the right call.

Speaker
You know, he didn't have his best game, but like a lot of guys didn't have their best game on defense. So I definitely I definitely think it's fair to ask the question whether he should have been the one starting. And there's a good argument that attention should have gotten the start. But I certainly I don't I mean, I don't blame Obed individually for for the loss or for the for the draw.

I just think it was more about the collective on defense and not controlling the game than it was about any individual player. That's just how I see it.
