Finding Your Unique Pottery Voice

What is up, Shaping Nation? This is Nick Torres here. And on this episode of Shaping Your Pottery, I'm going to be talking about when you should move on from your current voice and go try to find a new voice with your pottery.

Speaker
See, oftentimes I see potters going through, I guess, a stage of boredom and just not really liking the pottery that they are making, that they are truly making right now. They maybe liked it in the past, but they they've grown out of it, right? Their skills have evolved and they've grown out of what they are currently making.
00:01:12
Speaker
But they get scared to pursue anything further. And when you get scared to pursue anything further, then that's when you get stagnant. And when you become stagnant, that's when you're not growing anymore. Your voice isn't getting better. Your pottery isn't getting better. And that's when you become stagnant bored and eventually burnt out because you're just doing the same things over and over again.
00:01:36
Speaker
So I think the right time to start moving on from your current voice is when you are completely burnt out with what you are making. And you're getting into that period where you just don't want to really make the party that you're making anymore.
Moving From Stagnation to Personal Satisfaction

And if you are in that period right now,
00:01:59
Speaker
I'm telling you it's a good thing. It's a good thing because now you can find a new voice that is going to be even better than the one that you are currently making right now. And it's important to know this because if you are feeling burnt out with your pottery and you are feeling like this isn't your voice anymore, then that probably means it isn't your voice anymore. But what can you do to start finding a new voice
00:02:24
Speaker
but while still being able to sell your party. Because I'm sure a lot of you are trying to, if you are worried about trying to find a new voice, you're worried about if you can sell that new voice. And that's probably the scariest part about finding a new voice. If you could sell that new voice, if other people will like it. But you have to stop fighting against yourself a little bit. You have to stop being so stagnant. You have to try new things in order to really see if it will work. But if you are worried about
Transitioning Styles Without Losing Sales

Speaker
You know, if your new voice will be able to sell, here's what you can do. So instead of just dropping it all at once, right, where you just completely change your voice, you're like literally day and night, and the next one day you're making this, and the next day you're completely making a different thing, do it slowly, right? So let's say you have a batch of 100 pots that you are selling.
00:03:19
Speaker
Out of the 100 pots, you can have 80 of those pots that you know will sell well and 20 pots that you are experimenting with. You are experiencing your new voice with.
00:03:30
Speaker
And then you keep on upping it by 10. So from, you have another 100, batch of 100 pots that you're selling, 70 pots that you know are selling well, 30 pots that you are trying to express your voice with. And you keep on doing that until you have found your unique voice and you know the party that is selling well, and you know that the party that you like is what you like. Because that is the hardest part about finding the new voice.
Balancing Personal Satisfaction with Market Success

is you know that you are bored and you know you want to go find a new voice, but the hardest part is knowing if it will sell or not. That's probably the hardest part or if other people will like it as well.
00:04:15
Speaker
The first thing is you have to know that you don't, the most important thing is if you like it, if you like what you're making, then it's going to come off a lot better. I can't tell you how many people I've interviewed where they decided to change things up and they were still able to sell their pottery just by simply changing things up because they were doing what they wanted to do instead of making really for, I guess, the customer or just to make money.
00:04:40
Speaker
But you have to make that transition slowly so that you know for sure that what you are making will sell. And if you already know what it's selling, keep selling that until you find a new voice that you know will sell and make it a slow transition. Don't just do it all at once. Because if you do it all at once, that's when people are like, what happened to your other pottery? What happened to all the other stuff you're making? If you do a slow transition, it's going to be seamless. It's not going to be like,
00:05:09
Speaker
Oh, she changed up all of a sudden. But I promise you, if you change up what you are making, most people are probably like, yeah, I enjoy that too. I want you to be happy. I promise you, they're probably gonna do that. They're gonna say that to you, that I want you to make what you wanna make and I love your work no matter what. So if you are worried about when you should change your voice,
00:05:34
Speaker
The big factor is if you know that what you are currently making is no longer suiting you. It's no longer being something that you truly enjoy making and you are just in that little rut. You have to get out of that rut and you have to start making something new.

But make that transition seamless. Make it slow so that you're not just throwing everybody off guard.
