Tom Jolley: It's a glorified friendly, isn't it? Let's be honest. But GSPN officially launches this week. So Marcus, give us a rundown on how this is going to work.

officialgspn: Yeah. And we've got a fantasy one as well, which I'm wondering, Tom, maybe that's going to be your baby one day. you Jump over to the fantasy podcast.
Tom Jolley: I'll definitely be trying to jump over there once or twice because for those who know me and are personal, these listeners get to know me. I love a bit of family football. Who doesn't?

officialgspn: Thursday, I'm looking forward to this a lot. Crossover Thursday, where the teams that are playing each other at the weekend will fight it out amongst themselves online.
Tom Jolley: There's going to be some feisty debate, maybe some arguments. I think it's going to kick off in one or two of those chats. I'm looking yeah i'm looking at the Liverpool Everton guys. I'm looking at some of the North London guys, maybe even a Manchester Derby special as well.
Tom Jolley: I'm sure they could get a crossover on this weekend because of what's just happened. But this weekend did see the trilogy of the Manchester Derby at Wembley. 1 -1 aggregate, if you will, with both teams winning one respective FA Cup trophy against each other over the last two seasons.
Tom Jolley: The glorified friendly, as I like to call it, between both Manchester clubs started off Keiji with Eric Tenharg's side gaining most chances, altering i also in the general thought of any fan that solely looked at the statistics.
Tom Jolley: so I like to do that a little bit sometimes as we know my nickname on this podcast seems to have come from Mikey as the AI of football but we'll leave that aside for the moment.
officialgspn: Mmhmm.
Tom Jolley: and the statistics they were heavily in Manchester City's favour bar the shots and shots on target substitute Alejandro Garmacho fresh off of winning copper America in the summer netted to put the red devils ahead with just seven minutes to go however his Portuguese counterpart Monado Silva equalised with two out of three minutes to go if ah sorry two to go after just three minutes after entering the fray somewhere I'm always there and in true community shield style fashion penalties with a decider. I think three out of the last five have been ah decided on penalties. It seems to be the case in these preseason from these, but it was, ah sorry, but the red side of Manchester going ahead in the early parts of the shootout, it was just needing Jaden Sancho to net the penalties to set Manchester into the glorified friendly heavens. But he missed and he missed. I feel sorry for him because he missed in the exact same goal that he missed in the Euro 2020 Championships in the same side of Sabine, the deciding penalty.
Tom Jolley: but It led for them to them defeated by City. Johnny Evans missed a penalty flying it into Rose Ed. Akanji, the Swiss defender for City, netted the final penalty to crown Manchester City Community Shield champions for the 23 -24 season, while simultaneously reigniting the spark of club football ahead of the 23 -24 Premier League campaign. Only one Community Shield winner in the last 13 have gone on to win the league the following season.
Tom Jolley: Marcus, is this a good sign for the likes of Arsenal, Liverpool, City or United? Or is the Community Shield just a completely not -appointless match that happens to be played at Wembley?
officialgspn: Well, I mean, I don't want to soothe your your pain any more than than is necessary.
Tom Jolley: there is There is no pain. and There is genuinely no pain. Don't get me wrong, it's one of those games where I would be but absolutely buzzing giving it left, right and centre to any City fan because we beat them. But both teams weren't at full strength. It's a pre -season, it's a glorified pre -season friendly with a plate that you win. I'd have said this if we won in most respects, to be honest. But um no, so we I think we were the better team in parts, Manchester United, but Manchester City come out on top just like they tend to do in most parts of the season.
officialgspn: and And this is why I'm going to say it's not a good omen at all because yeah I've been watching Man United, I've been watching everyone in pre -season but particularly Man United because I think they've been particularly interesting in that they have played some really nice football, they have looked fresher than they've looked for a long time but have still not really put the ball in the back of the net, not won the stream of games and we saw Manchester United that looked really good.
Tom Jolley: me.
officialgspn: I mean any team that takes City to 90 minutes is is a good side but still couldn't get the job done and i want to talk to you more about about man united and and what's happening there at the moment but you know to answer your question about should other clubs be worried um yeah i think they should i think Manchester City is still proving not just that that they're a good side but now that they are winners and i think that is the big difference we saw in that game who's going to step up and who's going to be
officialgspn: ah but you know a champion who's going to put that ball in the back of the net and apparently shoot out. I do feel so sorry for the United players that missed. and you Who would have expected Johnny Evans to even be stepping up to take that penalty? Sancho, obviously you mentioned as well what happened with him and I feel really sorry for him because I think he's potentially got a chance to really reignite his career this season.
officialgspn: um under Tenharg in a new kind of shape, Man United ah team. So I think that was a really poor start for him and hopefully I really pray he he kind of bounces back. um But I wanted to ask you specifically with Manchester United, same for for a lot of teams.
Tom Jolley: specific
officialgspn: We talked about Arsenal and and kind of will they finally get over the line this season? and I noticed Tenharg gave a special shout out to Garnaccio and, gosh, and Martinez.
Tom Jolley: Lissandra Martinez, in the little speech you did in the pre -season camp for those both winning mentality, I guess you could say, and then both winning Copa America.
officialgspn: um
officialgspn: Yeah, and I think that's a huge thing. I think the club needs winners. It needs people that like know how to get things over the line. And actually, after Banana Silver's penalty miss, you know, he actually steps up and I'm thinking, oh, he's young, it's a penalty.
officialgspn: He's already scored a goal. He'd be forgiven if he missed it. And it was a quality penalty. And I thought, okay, this kid's got his head about him and it's a potential star amongst those ranks. He's already been kind of singled out at the beginning of preseason by Tenharg. So I am curious to hear from a Man United fan, obviously the Daily Man United is going to delve into this a bit more, I'm sure. Does Manchester United have the leadership? Does it have the winning mentality to go far this season?
Tom Jolley: We have had winners in our team, in our squad for the last few years. Johnny Evans, as you mentioned, he's a winner. He won the Premier League in 2013. Let's not forget about that. me Our whole squad won the FA Cup last year. Let's not forget about that as well. But I know you've got Casanova in there, haven't you? He's a leader. He's one of the older players. I think Bruno Fernandez is a leader. Don't get me wrong. He's not won many, many trophies in his career, but he's got a very high depth of experience throughout his career. and i think He's one of those players, I literally just before we start recording, I was looking looking at a Jamie Redknack clip from a couple of years ago, but speaking about Bruno Fernandez and how he said about, he's genuinely one of those players where he cares so much about the club. he There's rumors from certain sources, certain reliable sources that he's going to be signing a new contract this week till 2027, which is big, big news for any Manchester United fan out there. But I think we could do with one one or two more. I mean, we've seen the rumors. We'll get onto the transfers of two XIX players joining the ranks. That worries me a little bit.
Tom Jolley: on how the recruitments go in there. But overall, to answer your question, in quick, brief form, in the daily Manchester United podcast, we'll dive into it deeper, as you said. But I think it's a it's a very mixed answer, isn't it? Because we've got a very, very young squad this season, a little bit older than others in the league. But I think we've got quite an experienced squad for the average age we have. And there certainly isn't that dressing room. I mean, you look at like to Marcus Rashford, he's at a very, very sort of long The longevity in his career has seen him making his first team debut at the age of what, 16? I think we've got definitely a depth of experience in there. I think it's just finding those right people to try and utilise that. I think that's why we've seen some of the backroom staff additions that we have seen in pre -season.
officialgspn: Good, good, good answer, Tom. And I do think, you know, I am worried. I said and we we met and talked well before this season. And I said, 10 hogs staying is the best thing that could happen for Manchester United.
Tom Jolley: um As a Manchester United fan, I know this is probably a grapple podcast and I'm going to look back from the tangent, but I backed him all the way through. I always wanted him to stay at the club, but I was down. I was one of those very, in a few thousands Manchester United fans down and brighten away on the last day of the season, chanting his name for 90 minutes after the rumours of him getting sacked came out. And obviously he stayed at the club. I'm very happy he stayed at the club and I hope he kicks on with any losses back in. But Marcus, it's our time.

Tom Jolley: As the Global Sports Podcast now kicks off fully this week, it would only be right to give you some Premier League predictions before the Premier League kicks off on Friday. So Marcus, I would like to know some predictions. and I want these to be some saucy predictions as well. Your winners, over -performers, under -performers, your player of the season and your young player of the season.
officialgspn: Oh gosh, okay.
Tom Jolley: I think the best way to do this is go one for one on them. So we'll start off with the winners. I think this is finally the time Arsenal do it. I think there is no in -between of Arsenal winning the league this season, or them finishing sixth. There is no in -between. It will be one or the other. And I think the recruitment they've done this summer, I think... I won't lie, I think he was probably eyeing up the Barcelona job after the the departure of Javi.
Tom Jolley: and I think if he wins the league this season, it will be a perfect time for Tabauer and takeover from Hansi Flick should that all go down the pan. and But no, I think Arsenal do it. I think the defensive structure they've got last season was superb and I think they're attacking threats. Should they maybe add one more? I think they need in that number nine position. They should, they've got to do it, haven't they? This is the final to that, surely.
officialgspn: I mean, they've got to, will they? I have to disagree. I think, you know, you're talking about Arteta and Barcelona. I wonder if Arsenal had won the league. I'm not sure he would have stayed. I think he now has unfinished business because they're a quality side. They've played some gorgeous football. They deserve to be champions at some point. I don't think they're going going to do it this season. I think they've done a lot in in terms of investment. They've done some really good business. They've done some great business.
officialgspn: But again, you look at City and and um' I'm not going to be i'm certainly not a City fan. And I see one piece of business because that's a club that knows what it's doing.
Tom Jolley: Yeah.
officialgspn: It knows it's scored. It knows it can get the job done. Everybody fears them. They know how to win. They they will dig out wins.
Tom Jolley: Not to mention they've got the Premier League eagle eye of these financial regulations right on their tail, seeing the fact that most of the top 60 at the moment, and we'll get onto that a little bit later, but your winners Marcus Manchester City.
officialgspn: Manchester City and also, you know, talking about Arteta leaving, well, we think Pep's going to go. I think we it's, I think he'll go.
Tom Jolley: Yeah, it's got to be out in it. I think this is the final tie for him. It will be lovely from a neutral point of view to see a manager of his caliber bow out with five in a row. But for me, I really don't want to see it, but it wouldn't surprise me if it does happen. So if you're going for Manchester City and I'm going for Arsenal, it looks like it's going to be a repeat at the top of the table from last season. Your overperformance. I'll let you go first on this one because mine definitely will cause some stir.
officialgspn: So mine is a bit of a weird one because I did speak on this pod last week when we were doing a few preview episodes about this team going down, but I'm really excited to see Ipswich and what what they can do with with McKenna at the helm.
Tom Jolley: All schools this week said that he thinks they're going to finish top 12. So I don't know if you're going to think they're going to go that high, but I think a 15th, 16th, maybe a 17th will be a massive achievement for Keira McKenna's side.
officialgspn: Yeah, and and I think what's exciting having watched, you know, how they played last season, I think they'll bring that in. I think there's a lot of passion around the club. There's a lot of energy in this part of England about them. And I think clubs will underestimate them. I think that tends to happen with clubs that are newly promoted. And I think we will be pleasantly surprised to see it switch back where they belong in the Premier League.
Tom Jolley: Well, I'm going to go on the complete opposite end of the straw and I am, I guess you could say overly confident because of the state that other teams and other fans seem to think that Manchester United are at the moment, but I think Manchester United are going to finish in the top four. I think we've seen in pre -season a lot. I'm not saying we're going to win the league, we're not going to finish second. I don't think we're going to finish that. I think top four, maybe one of the cups again is a really good season for Manchester United.
Tom Jolley: I think there's this curse of the minute going round that if any team that loses the Community Shield usually wins the league, whenever GTA is released, Grand Theft Auto, the video game, Manchester United always win the league. The Lit coming into Manchester United, he's won the league at every single club in his first season. Could that happen? Look, that's all theoretical, isn't it? But I think top four would be a brilliant position for Everton, how to build on again within EOS. I think we've got a very young squad and I think we need to get up there challenging. We all know there's a little bit of a gap there, but I think top four at the minute is probably an open performance prediction, especially based on last season, and contradictory to the FA Cup victory. On the other end of the spectrum,
Tom Jolley: under -performers, I'm going to go with the obvious, 50 ,000 players in the first team squad, about 20, I mean they've got 24 -watt goalkeepers, I mean they've got nine goalkeepers in the first team squad.
officialgspn: Hahahaha!
Tom Jolley: I really need to tune into this Chelsea daily on the Global Sports Podcast Network because I need to know what they're thinking because I don't think anyone in world football knows what's going on at Stamford Bridge. That wouldn't surprise me if we see a repeat of I think it was 2017 -18 was it when Chelsea went and finished below the top 10 under Antonio Conte following their Premier League winners campaign after the year after Leicester. So yeah I just I think I think Maresco will be gone by January I think their first team squad is way too big. The recruitment is ridiculous. the sign in players who i mean They signed a player from Boca Juniors this week. He was born in 2007 who made three appearances for Boca Juniors. They paid 25 million euros for him. Who is done who is still with your scouts mate? Have you got Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall looking at the pitch? like It is ridiculous. I don't understand it, Marcus.
officialgspn: So so i I am going to um stick up for poor Jup Tej, who's covering Chelsea at the moment, which is why he's not with us today. um It's up and down the country, reporting on all kinds of games. um He was on on our podcast recently talking about, you know, I said what's going on there. And if you remember, he was like, you know what, I'm quietly confident you know, fans in general, the mood around Stanford Bridge for him to kind of speak for an entire fan base was, yeah, yeah, this is, you know, it's been a bit rough, but it's going to work out. It's going to be fine. I'm, I'm with you. I don't know what on earth is going on, but it's very close. You know, I trust his sources and he seems to think it's going to all work out. I, I'm going to say Newcastle United.
Tom Jolley: I do agree with that one. I think the top 4 -4 from last year will continue. The departure of Amanda Staley and her husband from the board may cause some trouble, there but there's been some rumours that Eddie House apparently signed a contract in secret to keep him at the club, but that's not been released to any Newcastle fans. I mean, Newcastle fans have replied to the rumour being very, very confused. Lee Carsley announces the England interim boss. wouldn't surprise me i mean It wouldn't surprise to me if he stays on permanently, but Eddie House, of course, we know, opened to the England job.
Tom Jolley: But Newcastle, they're a very strange club at the moment, aren't they? Their businesses have been okay, but again, it it's a little bit... it's it's one I'm sure the Geordie lads can cant reiterate this to me, but I'm a little bit confused again of what's going on at St James's Park.
officialgspn: Yeah and I think it's a shame because they they had the the new ownership and they got Eddie Howie and they started quicker than anyone ever imagined with good business, great results, great football and it was like this is some sort of dream paradise and it can only get better and better and better and a It kind of stalled and you know how being linked to the England boss job shows really that it's not about the manager.
officialgspn: Something's not quite clicking there and I think that will hang over their heads until that's sorted out completely.
Tom Jolley: Yeah.
officialgspn: um Incidentally, I mean completely not a subject for Premier League podcasts, but this idea that the next England boss must be English is already dwindling the pool. In my opinion, it's quite ridiculous and very kind of backwards, but um Eddie Howe would be a good fit and I think lots of people would welcome him into the job.
Tom Jolley: yeah
officialgspn: But yeah, Newcastle, I think Now at this point, since they're takeover, you're going to have to say, okay, right. So what's really going on? What are you going to achieve?
Tom Jolley: I think, I
officialgspn: And I don't think they're going to achieve much this season.
Tom Jolley: think for me, yeah yeah, for me, I think it's a case of they ran before they could walk.
officialgspn: And let's see what happens in 38 games time.
Tom Jolley: And I'm really worried about Newcastle and says that, will the fans start to turn on this ownership and this, these players, this squad, the manager, because everything happened too quickly. I feel like their expectations of getting top four in that first full season put their expectations through the roof.
Tom Jolley: And I think, I think if, The steady increase of them, maybe if they'd done last season the season, switched the last two seasons around, steady, steady progression. I think they but they their trajectory is going up and down like a yo -yo at the minute.
officialgspn: Yeah.
Tom Jolley: I don't think it's quite sustainable for the time being, but we'll leave Newcastle for now. The best play of the season, I think there's only two names you can really mention.
officialgspn: Oh.
Tom Jolley: in If we're going to go for Manchester City or Arsenal to win the title this season, the upcoming season, I think you can only go for the Norwegian robot in Erling Haaland. or the other Norwegian robot in a sense in a Martin Odegard.
officialgspn: Oh so I actually I'm gonna pick something really out of left field or very obvious actually because there's been a lot of chat you know he's nowhere near the Ballon d 'Or even though he's been consistently wonderful for club and country is is this the season where people finally can't kind of recognize and you know finally applaud what Roger is doing for Manchester City and what's happening there so
Tom Jolley: but It wouldn't surprise me, even and for me, it's been between him and Venus's junior for that Ballon d 'Or this year. Come, I think it's September, October, I want to say it gets announced. Wouldn't surprise me if the Spaniard picks up the trophy, no?
officialgspn: and No, I think, I mean, he's, I'm sure he's come out and said, oh, it wouldn't surprise him if he didn't because of the politics around the competition, which is quite, quite bold.
Tom Jolley: Well, yeah.
officialgspn: But I also kind of agree. um And I think, you know, as I said man you not Man City for the title. gough What a slip there. Not Man United.
officialgspn: Man City for the title.
Tom Jolley: came a hope upon night
officialgspn: Roger would be a massive massive part of that but also a little sneaky sneaky one under there. I think this season could be the resurgence of a prime de Bruyne.
officialgspn: I think there's something about
Tom Jolley: You think he's going to shut those Saudi links up and perform to his very best in his final season and could be his final season at the Etihad?
officialgspn: i can I think, you know, there's there's a freedom that comes with that age. And I think that what's been happening with the Belgium team is kind of behind us now. And that but chance of that generation doing something wonderful pressures off.
officialgspn: And I think he's such a wonderful footballer. It's easy it's easy to forget how good he is until you see him again. And you go, oh, OK, who can pick a pass like that? Who can play a shot like that?
officialgspn: um So I'm going to pick two city players for my sins as as the potential players of the season.
Tom Jolley: Surprise, surprise. Well, just like Michael Artero on every match day, I'm a little bit worried of the clock at the moment. Young player of the season. I've got to go for one of both from lunch each Manchester club.
Tom Jolley: Cobie Manning, I can't not.
officialgspn: Thank
Tom Jolley: I think he's been that good last season. It wouldn't surprise me. The thing I'm worried with him is he's going to play too much at such an age.
officialgspn: you.
Tom Jolley: And the other one being Oscar Bob. another Norwegian, funnily enough, but and I just think he ran the show in that in preseason, the whole preseason, including the Community Shield of Manchester City. He felt like he was being, a he felt like he'd find a new persona, this electrifying pace he's got, this skilled technical ability on the ball. And I think he could really kick on the season, especially with the fact that Phil Foden isn't going to be coming into the Manchester City fold until a a few weeks into the season.
officialgspn: You know what, those are both the choices I've already gone through before. And actually, I've slightly put Maynard ahead there because I think he's had a bit more Premier League experience. He had a great tournament when he did manage to get some minutes out on on the pitch for England, and he looks effortlessly in control. like you know Bob looked um fantastic in preseason, great in the Community Shield match the other day.
officialgspn: but I think Manning plays that little bit of freedom and confidence that gives him that edge. And as an England fan, you've got to hope that he's going to have a wonderful season.

The latest transfer news coming out of the Premier League is that Dominic Salanke to Spurs for 65 million quid. Don't get me wrong,
Tom Jolley: Salanke did have a brilliant season last year in an overperforming Bournemouth side, competing in their best ever top flight finish. But can he do it for a top six side and isn't 65 minutes for a Bournemouth striker? It shows the negotiating power for me that certain teams in the Premier League on the lower end have when dealing with those top six clubs because their budgets are so much in the public knowledge and public eye these days.
officialgspn: Yeah, I mean, to answer your question, 65 million. I think the that that is a lot of pressure price tag because actually I think Solanke has been incredibly, consistently incredible for Bournemouth.
officialgspn: Great season last season. And if he bags some goals that gets them Champions League football, no one is going to bat an eye lead at 65 million.
Tom Jolley: And I think he can do that. I think he is. Speaking of, Dominic's like his place. I think he is. Spurs is kind of that perfect fit for him in all the other toxic sides that he can go to. Didn't work out in for Liverpool. Didn't work out at Chelsea in his youthful days. Bournemouth worked really well. Think Spurs might be that next step in stone. Just go through a couple of the other transfers very, very quickly. Manchester United set to sign Mateusz Delet and Masrawi from Bayern Munich for fees of 45 million euros for the Dutch central defender. and €15 million euros for the Moroccan right -back. Missouri is set to replace come in and replace the departing right -back in Aaron Wambisaka, who is set to join West Ham United this week. That's all the major news from the Premier League for today, with Liverpool remaining as the only club in the EPL to have not spent a penny so far this transfer window. Will Arn Slott sign anyone?
